Integrating GPT into the Journalism and Communication Industries:The Technological Logic,Ecosystem Reconstruction,and Ethical Chal enges

Generative AI,represented by GPT(Generative Pre-trained Transformer),is now leading the technological revolution and is reconstructing the journalism and communication industries'ecosystems because of its powerful generative capacity and diverse range of outputs.While GPT is busy revolutionizing and innovating the production of news content,working patterns,and operation modes,it has also given rise to ethical concerns in regard to news authenticity,data security,humanistic values,and other related aspects.Therefore,it is imperative to initiate strategies and approaches,such as establishing a mechanism for verifying information authenticity,enhancing data security and privacy regulations,and instituting an ethical supervision and governance framework for AI,in order to facilitate the systematic advancement of AI-based news production while reinstating public trust.

The Impact of Street Interviews on Chinese EFL Undergraduates’Intercultural Communicative Competence

The study adopts Byram’s Intercultural Communicative Competence(ICC)model as the theoretical framework,and structured interviews were conducted to explore the impact of street interviews on the participants’ICC.Analysis results revealed street interviews help students acquire knowledge in intercultural attitudes,intercultural knowledge,skills of discovery and interaction,and critical cultural awareness,aligning with the four components of Byram’s ICC model.Meanwhile,they have positive perceptions of street interviews.Therefore,street interviews have a positive effect on the development of participants’ICC.

The Science Communication in Context of New Media-- The Case of Science Journalism

This article emphasizes the importance of science communication in context of new media. A brief summary is offered of some particular posture of scientific journalism from within new media. With the above background, four priorities for future science communication in context of new media are introduced： （1） a brief description about the actual status of science communication within the new media and mass communication process in general; （2） a solid theoretical and conceptual frame for scientific journalism within new media context; （3） a description of some possible forms of public for scientific journalism; （4） a brief analysis upon the possible set of negative effects of scientific journalism in new media and globalization context, and a need for a larger perspective in any attempt to understand the phenomenon of science communication within new media and mass communication processes.

National Lists of Scholarly Publication Channels: An Overview and Recommendations for Their Construction and Maintenance

Purpose: This paper presents an overview of different kinds of lists of scholarly publication channels and of experiences related to the construction and maintenance of national lists supporting performance-based research funding systems. It also contributes with a set of recommendations for the construction and maintenance of national lists of journals and book publishers.Design/methodology/approach: The study is based on analysis of previously published studies, policy papers, and reported experiences related to the construction and use of lists of scholarly publication channels. Findings: Several countries have systems for research funding and/or evaluation, that involve the use of national lists of scholarly publication channels(mainly journals and publishers). Typically, such lists are selective(do not include all scholarly or non-scholarly channels) and differentiated(distinguish between channels of different levels and quality). At the same time, most lists are embedded in a system that encompasses multiple or all disciplines. This raises the question how such lists can be organized and maintained to ensure that all relevant disciplines and all types of research are adequately represented. Research limitation: The conclusions and recommendations of the study are based on the authors' interpretation of a complex and sometimes controversial process with many different stakeholders involved.Practical implications: The recommendations and the related background information provided in this paper enable mutual learning that may feed into improvements in the construction and maintenance of national and other lists of scholarly publication channels in any geographical context. This may foster a development of responsible evaluation practices.Originality/value: This paper presents the first general overview and typology of different kinds of publication channel lists, provides insights on expert-based versus metrics-based evaluation, and formulates a set of recommendations for the responsible construction and maintenance of publication channel lists.

New Media and the Changes in the Communication Paradigm

With the emergence of the new digital platforms, a diversified number of approaches and providers cannot damage too much a rather crowded info sphere. What may come as a general challenge is the ＂performance＂ amateurs who have the devices, the will but not the skills to become reliable communicators. Good training and an expanded concern for the accuracy of messages should distinguish between fact and fiction, and between information and opinion. The smart phone, the iPod, the lap top, or the tablet has expanded the means of communication. They have also diversified the types of messages circulated. The traditional main stream media outlets are facing a mounting competition from the social networks populated with the folk journalists, albeit, and non-professionals. Basic training of all those willing to come into the communication ring and regulations may concern not only the professionals but also the amateurs, and it may be ways to get over what seems to be a deadlock.

Extensive Reading and Writing Reader＇s Response Journal： The Very Way to Improve Students＇ English Proficiency

This paper figures out the problems the Chinese students often meet with when they try to obtain the English language ability. In order to assist my students crack down on such problems, I take up the approach of giving them opportunities to play the active roles in English reading activity and requiring them to write reading response journals and to have frequent discussions in the reading class. The approach aims at improving the students＇ ability and getting them to be trained and improved effectively in the language skills concerned. The approach has come out with remarkable achievements. My understanding is that the process of learning a foreign language is a process indeed of accumulation, including both the language and culture knowledge. The accumulation can be gained by means of reading a lot, thus improving the students＇ language competence, enlarging their cultural and language field of vision on the western world. We teachers play the function of bridge leading the students to succeed in mastering and applying English as a practical tool in their life and work to come. This paper introduces what I have been trying to assist my students in solving their problems through my teaching practice during the past years.

Contribution of the Open Access Modality to the Impact of Hybrid Journals Controlling by Field and Time Effects

Purpose:Researchers are more likely to read and cite papers to which they have access than those that they cannot obtain.Thus,the objective of this work is to analyze the contribution of the Open Access(OA)modality to the impact of hybrid journals.Design/methodology/approach:The“research articles”in the year 2017 from 200 hybrid journals in four subject areas,and the citations received by such articles in the period 2017-2020 in the Scopus database,were analyzed.The hybrid OA papers were compared with the paywalled ones.The journals were randomly selected from those with share of OA papers higher than some minimal value.More than 60 thousand research articles were analyzed in the sample,of which 24%under the OA modality.Findings:We obtain at journal level that cites per article in both hybrid modalities(OA and paywalled)strongly correlate.However,there is no correlation between the OA prevalence and cites per article.There is OA citation advantage in 80%of hybrid journals.Moreover,the OA citation advantage is consistent across fields and held in time.We obtain an OA citation advantage of 50%in average,and higher than 37%in half of the hybrid journals.Finally,the OA citation advantage is higher in Humanities than in Science and Social Science.Research limitations:Some of the citation advantage is likely due to more access allows more people to read and hence cite articles they otherwise would not.However,causation is difficult to establish and there are many possible bias.Several factors can affect the observed differences in citation rates.Funder mandates can be one of them.Funders are likely to have OA requirement,and well-funded studies are more likely to receive more citations than poorly funded studies.Another discussed factor is the selection bias postulate,which suggests that authors choose only their most impactful studies to be open access.Practical implications:For hybrid journals,the open access modality is positive,in the sense that it provides a greater number of potential readers.This in turn translates into a greater number of citations and an improvement in the position of the journal in the rankings by impact factor.For researchers it is also positive because it increases the potential number of readers and citations received.Originality/value:Our study refines previous results by comparing documents more similar to each other.Although it does not examine the cause of the observed citation advantage,we find that it exists in a very large sample.

Socio-pragmatic Failure of Chinese Non-English Majors in Intercultural Communication

Chinese non-English majors often make many socio-pragmatic mistakes due to their ignorance of English-Chinese cultural backgrounds and pragmatic customs, which exerts a negative impact on their intercultural communications. This paper studies the social pragmatic failure that non-English majors usually make in requests, compliments, apologies, etc., aiming to explore the causes of social pragmatic failure from the aspects of economic background, thinking mode, negative pragmatic transfer, and so on. In addition, a series of corresponding methods are also suggested to reduce social pragmatic failures for non-English majors, so that they can improve their intercultural communication abilities.

New Technologies Democratize TV Programs： NosOtros and the Citizen Participation of a Glocal Content

This paper will present a television program based on glocal （global ＋ local） culture and sustainability concepts, such as local production, social support and cultural diversity, done with virtual and social networks. The result is NosOtros1. Its name is a play of words between Nos-we in Portuguese and Otros--other in Spanish. The purpose is to practice a journalistic and cultural production process which would understand local specificities and global themes. NosOtros used professional networks in journalism to compose a cultural, democratic, and balanced program, understood and accepted across all of Latin America. NrsOtros was recorded in four countries in 2007, co-produced by local journalists, using professional networks and new media technologies such as Voice over Internet Protocol （VolP） and peer-to-peer programs.

To what extent should grammar be taught for the students of English majors in China？

The purpose of this paper is to show the importance of grammar teaching for the students of English majors in China and to provide an integrated teaching method for the teachers of English in China and colleagues in similar situations outside of China, through the analysis of the nature and role of grammar, of the importance of form depending upon the students＇ and instructional variables, and of using texts communicatively, in English teaching.

Improving college non-English majors＇ nonverbal communication competence

Under the widespread view that verbal competence is essential in foreign language acquisition. nonverbal communication has not been given sufficient attention and importance in foreign language teaching in China. In most cases in intercultural interaction, people focus on verbal cues while neglecting those nonverbal messages produced by the bodies and the environment. Such neglect often results in misunderstandings and conflicts because nonverbal communication reveals basic cultural traits from which people are able to gather clues about underlying attitudes and values. So the study of nonverbal communication is an important component to the study of intercultural communication. It deserves due attention in foreign language acquisition. Grounded on the model of cultural learning put forward by Hanvey, the study puts forward a set of feasible suggestions on how to improve intercultural nonverbal communication competence of college non-English majors.

A Probe Into CLT Pedagogical Implications for English Majors in China's Mainland： A Holistic Educational Paradigm

Notwithstanding the tremendous progress of foreign language teaching （FLT） and foreign language education （FLE） in China's Mainland, there still remain large-scale margins as reflective argumentation on the issue of methodology, pedagogy, and educational paradigm to probe into. Among each respective margin concerning this FLT and FLE, this paper deepens the aspects of methodological approach of communicative language teaching （CLT） and holistic educational paradigm. Furthermore, this paper elaborates the current dominant teaching status and makes discussion on the topic of harmony between English teaching and using, taking Basic English course for English majors in China's Mainland as the case study.
