Three key issues for providing knowledge services are how to improve the access of unstructured and scattered information for the non-specialist users, how to provide adequate information to knowledge workers and how to provide the information requiring highly focused and related information. Cyber-Brain has been designed as a platform that combines approaches based on knowledge engineering and language engineering to gather knowledge from various sources and to provide the effective knowledge service. Based on specially designed ontology for practical service scenarios, it can aggregate knowledge from Internet, digital archives, expert, and other resources for providing one-stop-shop knowledge services. The domain specific and task oriented ontology also enables advanced search and allows the system ensures that knowledge service could improve the user benefit. Users are presented with the necessary information closely related to their information need and thus of potential high interest. This paper presents several service scenarios for different end-users and reviews ontology engineering and its life cycle for supporting AOS (Agricultural Ontology Services) Vocbench which is the heart of knowledge services in agriculture domain.展开更多

With the arrival of the information age, research activities focused on the practice and approaches of knowledge services are on a marked increase as evidenced in the publications of social sciences. According to a so...With the arrival of the information age, research activities focused on the practice and approaches of knowledge services are on a marked increase as evidenced in the publications of social sciences. According to a social network analysis on knowledge service related literature, it reveals that information and knowledge workers often fail to take such an important element as the functional role of an emotive engagement into consideration in their study of knowledge services. It has increasingly become an issue of high profile with the rapid development of digital libraries and their web-based knowledge services in China and anywhere else in the world. In order to have a clearer understanding about issues involved in knowledge servicing so as to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of digital libraries in their knowledge service performance, the author has conducted surveys for seven times on the online information seeking behavior of graduate students at the Chinese Academy of Sciences with such research methods as questionnaires, interviews and natural observations during September 2006-June 2009. The research result has showed the emotive element has an important role in the user's information seeking behavior and in knowledge services practice. Therefore, knowledge services rendered may be more effective by adding the emotiveness-oriented communication element into such practice. This paper recommends that such an emotiveness-oriented communication approach should be carefully studied and factored into libraries' knowledge services practice.展开更多

The platform integrates heterogeneous information sources by means of a multi-dimensional integration index. It enables users to find technology knowledge from patents by employing the semantic Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ).Findings: This paper constructs an integrated amino acids industry database, which offers a general service oriented to the public, and a technical innovation knowledge base, which offers a value-added service oriented to enterprises.Research limitations: The technical innovation knowledge base only includes parts of amino acids technology knowledge, making it suitable to meet certain specific needs.Practical implications: Semantic annotation of technical innovation knowledge from patents requires manual work by domain experts.Originality/value: The amino acids industry knowledge service platform offers not only an integrated search service for amino acids industry information, but also a deep tech mining service for technical innovation knowledge of amino acids. Purpose: This paper documents an exploration of an innovative approach to the sharing of documents and information among the members of the National Alliance of Academies of Sciences (NAAS) in China, based on the p...Purpose: This paper documents an exploration of an innovative approach to the sharing of documents and information among the members of the National Alliance of Academies of Sciences (NAAS) in China, based on the practice initiated by the National Science Library of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NSLC).Design/methodology/approach: Through interviews and user surveys, we analyzed the general information demands of users from provincial academies of sciences (PASs) and problems of their document and information service teams. Based on our findings, we designed targeted services to help Alliance members support their document resources, information services for science and technology (S&T) decisions, and their knowledge transfer achievements. Furthermore, we offered training courses for provincial service teams, researchers, and administrators, to improve their information skills. These activities represent a new collaborative model for professional library consortia.Findings: To date, our service has been extended to all Alliance members, covering 19 provinces in China, and the NSLC service covers all aspects of knowledge services of Alliance members, from basic document delivery services to subject information analyses.Research limitations: Different PASs have different understandings of the role of the document and information services in the process of scientific research. These differences limit information service sharing of the NSLC with the PASs, and affect the service performance. For the sake of convenience, the original survey was conducted in only three provinces, which may not fully reflect the information needs of users in each Alliance institution. In addition, quantitative and qualitative analyses have been limited by the coverage of the sample.Practical implications: Document and information sharing has not only taken advantage of the NSLC knowledge service system and cooperation model, it has also enhanced the range of services of the NAAS in China.Originality/value: Based on knowledge service enhancements, the NAAS in China has formed a new kind of library consortium, which has broken the traditional library alliance model that was based mainly on the sharing of resources and services.展开更多

Findings: The system can help to refine descriptions, knowledge organization, and the semantic linking of various kinds of information resources closely related to science and technology. Such resources include domain literature, institutions, scientists, projects, and more. This paper describes a novel approach to build a domain-specific knowledge service with the data retrieved from Hidden Web. Ontology serves to model the domain knowledge. Queries forms of different Web sites are translated into machine-understandable format, defined knowledge concepts, so that they can be accessed automatically. Also knowledge data are extracted from Web pages and organized in ontology format knowledge. Purpose:Centralized on the construction of a personalized knowledge environment that can better meet the need of Chinese agricultural researchers,this paper presents the practice conducted by the National Agricultural...Purpose:Centralized on the construction of a personalized knowledge environment that can better meet the need of Chinese agricultural researchers,this paper presents the practice conducted by the National Agricultural Library(NAL)of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences(CAAS)in the digital research environment.Based on the analysis of information needs of Chinese agricultural researchers,CAAS constructed digital research environments for its researchers at different levels,by means of providing more professional knowledge services for targeted researcher users.Design/methodology/approach:On the basis of the construction of public service platform—National Agriculture Information System of the Library of CAAS(i.e.NAL),local resources were integrated with public open resources by using key technologies,such as Web 2.0,knowledge navigation,linked data and intelligent retrieval,to construct an institutional personalized digital repository for CAAS researchers.Findings:By using the construction tool CAASPKE,knowledge environment platforms have been constructed for 10 CAAS institutes,taking roughly 33%of CAAS institutes.In addition,16 discipline information environment platforms have been set up for CAAS research teams,and 5 professional digital libraries for provincial agricultural academies,which spread in Beijing,Shanxi,Sichuan,and the Xinjiang and Tibet Autonomous Regions.Research limitations:User’s local collections ought to be integrated with IR resources of the CAAS platform constantly.Due to the lack of overall knowledge resources,functions of the platform have not been fully explored,so the effect need be evaluated with the time being.Practical implications:The construction of research knowledge environment in CAAS has not only contributed to the development of its personalized knowledge service system,but also made the functions of libraries transformed into the information service system.In this case,CAAS libraries are now playing more and more important roles in the innovation process of Chinese agricultural researchers.Originality/value:The innovative practice is the first endeavor that ever implemented in the agricultural information service area across China’s mainland.The construction tool developed for the knowledge environment of personalization could customize resources flexibly according to the need of different CAAS users,and it can organize the knowledge resources of CAAS institutes effectively.展开更多

Efficient patent analysis builds R&D knowledge, reduces new product development tim...Engineering and research teams often develop new products and technologies by referring to inventions described in patent databases. Efficient patent analysis builds R&D knowledge, reduces new product development time, increases market success, and reduces potential patent infringement. Thus, it is beneficial to automatically and systematically extract information from patent documents in order to improve knowledge sharing and collaboration among R&D team members. In this research, patents are summarized using a combined ontology based and TF-IDF concept clustering approach. The ontology captures the general knowledge and core meaning of patents in a given domain. Then, the proposed methodology extracts, clusters, and integrates the content of a patent to derive a summary and a cluster tree diagram of key terms. Patents from the International Patent Classification (IPC) codes B25C, B25D, B25F (categories for power hand tools) and B24B, C09G and H011 (categories for chemical mechanical polishing) are used as case studies to evaluate the compression ratio, retention ratio, and classification accuracy of the summarization results. The evaluation uses statistics to represent the summary generation and its compression ratio, the ontology based keyword extraction retention ratio, and the summary classification accuracy. The results show that the ontology based approach yields about the same compression ratio as previous non-ontology based research but yields on average an 11% improvement for the retention ratio and a 14% improvement for classification accuracy.展开更多
Knowledge Sharing and Service is one effective way to eliminate knowledge poverty and promote social development.Existing knowledge sharing and service is mainly provided in some organizations or specific social group...Knowledge Sharing and Service is one effective way to eliminate knowledge poverty and promote social development.Existing knowledge sharing and service is mainly provided in some organizations or specific social groups.Besides,a knowledge sharing and service system about geography,natural resources and ecology has not been reported.We proposed a public welfare professional knowledge-sharing and service platform for all members of society in geography,natural resources and ecology.The construction of a knowledge-sharing and service platform is based on five aspects of work:analysis of user requirements,setting standards and drafting policies,aggregating knowledge resources,the technical realization and the maintenance of service.Knowledge resources can be aggregated by using a"two-step"strategy.A knowledge-sharing and service system can be implemented by using"four-tier"structures that are comprised of resources,resource access,application and service,based on the Hadoop-distributed cluster architecture.It has been proven that adhering to the idea of co-building and co-sharing,and using the mechanism of"payment is equal to benefit"can effectively promote the gathering of knowledge resources,and arouse the enthusiasm of all members of society to participate in knowledge sharing and service,to achieve the objective of narrowing the knowledge gap between social groups.展开更多

文摘Purpose:Centralized on the construction of a personalized knowledge environment that can better meet the need of Chinese agricultural researchers,this paper presents the practice conducted by the National Agricultural Library(NAL)of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences(CAAS)in the digital research environment.Based on the analysis of information needs of Chinese agricultural researchers,CAAS constructed digital research environments for its researchers at different levels,by means of providing more professional knowledge services for targeted researcher users.Design/methodology/approach:On the basis of the construction of public service platform—National Agriculture Information System of the Library of CAAS(i.e.NAL),local resources were integrated with public open resources by using key technologies,such as Web 2.0,knowledge navigation,linked data and intelligent retrieval,to construct an institutional personalized digital repository for CAAS researchers.Findings:By using the construction tool CAASPKE,knowledge environment platforms have been constructed for 10 CAAS institutes,taking roughly 33%of CAAS institutes.In addition,16 discipline information environment platforms have been set up for CAAS research teams,and 5 professional digital libraries for provincial agricultural academies,which spread in Beijing,Shanxi,Sichuan,and the Xinjiang and Tibet Autonomous Regions.Research limitations:User’s local collections ought to be integrated with IR resources of the CAAS platform constantly.Due to the lack of overall knowledge resources,functions of the platform have not been fully explored,so the effect need be evaluated with the time being.Practical implications:The construction of research knowledge environment in CAAS has not only contributed to the development of its personalized knowledge service system,but also made the functions of libraries transformed into the information service system.In this case,CAAS libraries are now playing more and more important roles in the innovation process of Chinese agricultural researchers.Originality/value:The innovative practice is the first endeavor that ever implemented in the agricultural information service area across China’s mainland.The construction tool developed for the knowledge environment of personalization could customize resources flexibly according to the need of different CAAS users,and it can organize the knowledge resources of CAAS institutes effectively.

文摘Engineering and research teams often develop new products and technologies by referring to inventions described in patent databases. Efficient patent analysis builds R&D knowledge, reduces new product development time, increases market success, and reduces potential patent infringement. Thus, it is beneficial to automatically and systematically extract information from patent documents in order to improve knowledge sharing and collaboration among R&D team members. In this research, patents are summarized using a combined ontology based and TF-IDF concept clustering approach. The ontology captures the general knowledge and core meaning of patents in a given domain. Then, the proposed methodology extracts, clusters, and integrates the content of a patent to derive a summary and a cluster tree diagram of key terms. Patents from the International Patent Classification (IPC) codes B25C, B25D, B25F (categories for power hand tools) and B24B, C09G and H011 (categories for chemical mechanical polishing) are used as case studies to evaluate the compression ratio, retention ratio, and classification accuracy of the summarization results. The evaluation uses statistics to represent the summary generation and its compression ratio, the ontology based keyword extraction retention ratio, and the summary classification accuracy. The results show that the ontology based approach yields about the same compression ratio as previous non-ontology based research but yields on average an 11% improvement for the retention ratio and a 14% improvement for classification accuracy.

文摘Knowledge Sharing and Service is one effective way to eliminate knowledge poverty and promote social development.Existing knowledge sharing and service is mainly provided in some organizations or specific social groups.Besides,a knowledge sharing and service system about geography,natural resources and ecology has not been reported.We proposed a public welfare professional knowledge-sharing and service platform for all members of society in geography,natural resources and ecology.The construction of a knowledge-sharing and service platform is based on five aspects of work:analysis of user requirements,setting standards and drafting policies,aggregating knowledge resources,the technical realization and the maintenance of service.Knowledge resources can be aggregated by using a"two-step"strategy.A knowledge-sharing and service system can be implemented by using"four-tier"structures that are comprised of resources,resource access,application and service,based on the Hadoop-distributed cluster architecture.It has been proven that adhering to the idea of co-building and co-sharing,and using the mechanism of"payment is equal to benefit"can effectively promote the gathering of knowledge resources,and arouse the enthusiasm of all members of society to participate in knowledge sharing and service,to achieve the objective of narrowing the knowledge gap between social groups.

文摘Management information system(MiS),a human-computer system that deeply integrates next-generation information technology and management services,has become the nerve center of society and organizations.With the development of next-generation information technology,Mis has gradually entered the smart period.However,research on smart managementinformation systems(SMIS)is still limited,lacking systematic summarization of its conceptual definition,evolution,research hotspots,and typical applications.Therefore,this paper defines the conceptual characteristics of SMIS,provides an overview of the evolution of SMIS,examines research focus areas using bibliometric methods,and elaborates on typical application practices of sMis in fields such as health care,elderly care,manufacturing,and transportation.Furthermore,we discuss the future development directions of SMIS in four key areas:smart interaction,smart decisionmaking,efficient resource allocation,and flexible system architecture.These discussions provide guidance and a foundation for the theoretical development and practical application of SMIS.
