A New Gateway to Target Language Improvement for College Translation Majors: A Case Study

Tandem-based learning is a way of collaborative learning with which two different language users communicate in theirtarget language. It implies that the both learners play a role as a teacher and learner. Through sufficient cooperative duration andexposure to their target language learning, their interest and motivation of translation majors were noticeably inspired. This programis sure to be very effective for foreign language learning, if the two principles are followed: principle of reciprocity and self-initia-tive.

Reading Developmental Trends in Early Years： The Influence of Word Identification Skills and Target Langauge Oral Ability to Comprehension

Language, reading, and reading-related tasks were administered to 148 children from lower primary （Standard 1, 2, and 3） in Kenyan schools. The aim was to investigate the literacy developmental trends across the years and establish which of the two variables, word identification skills or target language oral proficiency influenced reading comprehension performance. The results indicated that word identification skills independently influenced reading comprehension performance in both standard 2 and standard 3 classes, but target language oral skills did not. Further, the analysis of invented spelling task performance revealed evidence of transfer of alphabetic coding skills of first language to English orthography. The spelling errors reflected letter-sound patterns not found in English orthography. Analysis of the miscues in the spelling task revealed that children rely on first language phonological processes to spell target language unfamiliar words as long the languages have a common alphabetic system.

The Influence of Anglicism on French Language——Enrichment or Danger

The phenomenon of Anglicism is one of the hot linguistic topics which exists in almost every language in the world,especially in the French language.We look back to the history of English and French,and introduce the definition and classification of Anglicism.Considering the predominant place of the UK and the USA in many fields,the English language undoubtedly becomes Lingua franca in recent years.In certain high-tech domains,there are some irreplaceable words or the words which can't be translated properly in the target language.In order to introduce relative concepts,we have to ask the original language for help.That's how the Anglicism appears.And since then,the Anglicism has grown rapidly.By analyzing the history of the two languages,the origin of Anglicism and its development,we try to find out whether the phenomenon of Anglicism causes positive or negative effects for the French language.

Interlanguage Phonological System of L1 Cantonese Learners of English

This paper aims to study the unique interlanguage phonological system of the L1 Cantonese learners of English in GuangdongProvince, including the roles of the differences between native language and target language, language transfer and other constraints dur-ing the interlanguage formation process. An experiment has been designed to test the pronunciation of targeted consonants of the voca-tional college students, who are English majors with Cantonese as native language but are also exposed to Mandarin for a long time. Re-sults show that the sounds that do not exist in native language are easily pronounced incorrectly. The phonological system the subjectsdevelop to substitute the targeted consonants is quite different from that of the L1 Cantonese learners from Hong Kong and is also variedfrom that of the L1 Mandarin learners from other province of China's Mainland. It confirms that the L1 Cantonese learners of English inGuangdong Province do have a unique phonological system in their interlanguage and that special attention should be paid by teachersduring the teaching of English pronunciation.

Application of Nida＇s theory of functional equivalence in trademark translation

Through the introduction of Nida＇s translation principles that should be obeyed in trademark translation, the theory, characteristics of trademark and some essay discussed that the theory of dynamic equivalence （functional equivalence） was applied in trademark translation through the literal translation, transliteration and combination of the both. The essay also pointed out that the theory of functional equivalence was an important theory for trademark translation.

Cultural Discrepancies Multiply Difficulties in Translating

Translators always face dilemmas while translating source text into target text. Whether the language form is more important than the real underlying meaning is constantly a controversial issue in translation. In practice, to keep the target text in the same genre and form as the source text and accurately render the original meaning from the author is highly difficult, especially in literature translation. Therefore, previous research regarding difficulties in translating various languages in diverse cultures are to be reviewed, followed by a more specific context in which literature translations from Chinese to English and English to Chinese are analyzed. Difficulties exposed in these translations are dealt with by experienced translators who employ various strategies. How effective these translations are in transmitting the original source language in both form and other functions are then evaluated. Moreover, the impacts that culture have on translation are further discussed. It comes to conclude that translators may apply effective methods to minimize the gap between source language and target language, despite being unable to exactly render the meaning and form of the source text, especially when over one source language is involved.

An Investigation of Chinese Undergraduates’Ability to Translate Chinese Cultural Items into English and Predictors of Such Ability

College English teaching in China has long focused on importing cultures of English countries while neglecting to enhance students’English competence in home culture.The present research aims to investigate Chinese non-English major undergraduates’competence in translating Chinese cultural items into English and the significant predictors of such competence.With a test and a questionnaire as research instruments,this study was conducted to assess 82 undergraduates’ability to translate three different levels of Chinese culture-specific items into English and explored the factors which might have affected the students’home culture translation ability.The results show that the participants did well in translating the surface layer cultural items,but their performance in sub-surface and deep layer culture translation tasks was far from being satisfactory.It was also found that students had positive attitudes towards Chinese culture and were willing to learn to express Chinese culture in English,but their English learning motivation in general was not strong enough,and they were not given much input on Chinese culture in their English class.Students’Chinese cultural knowledge and their awareness of the importance of learning Chinese culture in English were found to be the two significant factors that can predict their performance in the translation tasks.These findings have implications for the teaching of culture and cross-cultural communications in EFL classes.

The Role of L1 in L2 Vocabulary Teaching and Learning for Chinese Learners of English

This paper examines the function of mother tongue in second or foreign language teaching and learning, focusing on the case of Chinese learners of English. The use of L1 in L2 vocabulary teaching is studied by summarizing relevant theories and by analyzing an example of how Chinese teachers introduce new words to students. The influence of L1 in L2 vocabulary learning is explored through studying three major negative transfers of Chinese learners of English with abundant common and typical examples.Seven implications for L2 teachers are listed as the result of my study.

COMPREHENSION OF L2 IDIOMS BY CHINESE EFL LEARNERS——EFFECTS OF IDIOM TYPE AND PROFICIENCY LEVEL

The study investigates: (1) how different idiom types, classified on the basis of a cross-linguistic comparison of Chinese and English idioms in terms of conceptual basis, affect English idiom comprehension as revealed from both the general performance and the on-line processing strategies adopted by Chinese EFL learners at different proficiency levels, and (2) to what extent can the observed learner behavior be accounted for within the theoretical framework of idiom comprehension. The study has provided empirical evidence for the configuration hypothesis of idiom comprehension.
