Depression, cognitive impairment, coping strategies, dyskinesia, gait disorders and complications of dopaminergic drugs are the variables that most affect health-related quality of life. The ecological model of human development focuses attention on both individual and social environmental factors as targets for health interventions. From this perspective, the aim of this cross-sectional survey was to evaluate the influence of gender, family size and perceived autonomy on health-related quality of life in Parkinson's disease patients in nOrtheastern Sicily, Italy. Ninety Parkinson's disease patients, attending the Movement Disorders Clinic at IRCCS Centro Neurolesi "Bonino-Pulejo" (Messina), were consecutively enrolled. The Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale motor subscale (UPDRS-Ⅲ) scores, the Parkinson Disease Questionnaire-39 Item scores (as a disease-specific measure of health-related quality of life), scores on the Short Form (36) Health Survey Questionnaire (as a generic measure), and answers to a brief checklist were recorded. A total of 85 Parkinson's disease patients (49% males and 51% females; mean age 70.8 ± 8.6 years mean UPDRS-Ⅲ 24.15 ± 6.55; mean disease duration 5.52 ± 4.65 years) completed the booklet of questionnaires. In the multivariate regression analysis, we included clinical and social variables as independent predictors of health-related quality of life. Our results suggest a potential compounding effect of ecological intrapersonal and interpersonal levels on health-related quality of life outcomes. Gender, self-evaluated autonomy and family size significantly impacted health-related quality of life. If quality of life is used as an indicator of treatment outcomes, an ecological perspective of the case history will be important to disclose relevant prognostic information and trigger personalized health care interventions.展开更多

The purpose of this study, conducted and completed before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, was to find correlations among psychiatric symptoms detected by a screening tool as the General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28) and the different domains of HRQOL measured with the SF-36 health survey (SF-36), in order to identify ICU survivors with Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) who need a specific psychiatric intervention to improve their HRQOL. Among 298 ICU survivors who stayed in the ICU for at least 72 hours, 48 patients were enrolled one year after discharge undergoing a clinical interview to assess their functional impairment (Barthel index), mental health (GHQ-28), and health-related quality of life (SF-36). 19% of those subjects had a GHQ-28 ≥ 5 and were identified as “psychiatric cases”, and they were older and experienced a greater impairment in HRQOL. Anxiety, insomnia, and depressive symptoms seemed to be particularly involved in the impairment of HRQOL. A negative correlation between GHQ-28 total scores and subscales and SF-36 subscales was found. Our findings highlighted that psychological distress in ICU survivors may negatively impact physical health recovery and quality of life;conversely, physical impairment and functional disability may trigger the onset of psychiatric symptoms after discharge. The present study is firstly to investigate the correlations between HRQOL and psychological distress in ICU survivors through the GHQ-28, and then affirms the need to carry out follow-up checks for psychiatric symptoms in ICU survivors.展开更多

The original 52-items Scale showed a high overall internal consistency. Four of the six subscales were associated with good values of the Cronbach’s α coefficient, whereas two subscales had lower values. Hence corrected item-total correlation was calculated and 26 items that decreased the scale’s reliability were deleted. The remaining 26 items were first subjected to Principal Component Analysis that suggested a conceptually meaningful five-factor model. This result was further supported by the first-order confirmatory factor analysis, in which all the factor loadings were statistically significant. The internal consistency and the composite reliability for the reduced version of the Scale and its subscales have shown a good reliability for the measurement models. The multidimensionality of the scale was also confirmed by a second-order factor model.展开更多

Forward and backward translations were performed, evaluating the semantic and conceptual equivalencies. Parents with infants younger than two-years-old were recruited and interviewed using think-aloud and probing techniques. Participants completed the questionnaire while speaking aloud about what came to their mind, what they thought each question meant, and how they reached each answer. <strong>Results:</strong> Seven mothers and three fathers participated. The median age was 33.4 (28 - 43) years. Four had infants younger than six-months-old. All infants were healthy. Parents’ perceptions of their infants’ HRQOL varied across their ages. Some parents with infants younger than six months experienced difficulty discussing “emotional functioning” and “cognitive functioning” because their infants were too young to articulate the actions mentioned in the items. In those cases, the parents responded, “never a problem”. Seventy-five percent of parents recalled their infants’ daily “physical functioning”, while only 58% recalled “physical symptoms”. Some parents’ perceptions and judgment formation were compromised by their own perceptions. For example, they answered “often a problem” when the items were problematic to themselves instead of to their child. However, many distinguished their infants’ HRQOL from their own perceptions, indicating they understood the intention of the questionnaire. <strong>Conclusion:</strong> Parents’ formed judgement may compromise by their own perceptions. The result of this study will be helpful in improving healthcare communication and interpreting parents’ judgments of their infants’ HRQOL in future studies.展开更多

METHODS:The present study included 108 diabetic retinopathy (DR) patients:54 with PDR and 54 with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR). Each healthy control group (n =54) sociodemographically matched to DR groups was established respectively. The quality of life, anxiety and depression symptoms were evaluated and analyzed on preoperative and postoperative month 1 using SF-36, DSQL and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). · RESULTS:DR patients described impaired HRQL (Health Related Quality of life, SF -36) in 6 out of 8 subscales, including ‘Body Health’, ‘Body RoleFunction’,‘General Health’,‘Society Function’,‘Emotion Role Function’and‘Mental Health’. Compared with controls, DR patients (NPDR and PDR) suffered from statistically significantly impaired HRQL (SF-36 Summary score) (P【 0.05). By surgical intervention, the anxiety and depression score were significantly reduced, while the health and quality of life (SF-36 Summary scores and DSQL scores) was improved in patients with PDR (P 【0.05). CONCLUSION:DR patients were affected in mentation and quality of life. Surgery interventions can improve SF-36, DSQL, anxiety and depression in PDR patients.展开更多

OBJECTIVE: To survey and analyze 11 influential factors for quality of life in adults with epilepsy by using quality of life epilepsy-31 scale. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Department of Neurology, First Hospital Affiliated to Jinan University; Department of Neurology, First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical College. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 107 adults with epilepsy for longer than one year were selected from Department of Neurology, First Hospital Affiliated to Jinan University between March 2004 and December 2006. The included patients met the Classification and Diagnostic Criteria of Epileptic Attack published by International Anti-Epilepsy League in 1981, and they provided informed consent. METHODS: General states, including course, attack frequency, marriage status, educational level, occupational types, economic status, attack types, drug types, and drug amount, were recorded. There were seven aspects in the Quality of Life Epilepsy-31 scale, including attack worry, life satisfaction, emotion, vigor/tiredness, drug influence, cognitive function, and social function. The scores positively correlated with the quality of life. Possible influential factors for quality of life were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and multivariate regression analysis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Course, attack frequency, marriage status, educational level, occupational types, economic status, attack types, drug types, drug amount, age, and sex. RESULTS: A total of 107 epileptic patients were included in the final analysis. Influential factors for quality of life in epileptic adults included attack frequency, educational level, economic status, attack types, drug amount, age, and course of disease (P 〈 0.05). Among them, attack frequency negatively correlated with attack worry, life satisfaction, emotion, vigor/tiredness, cognitive function, social function, and total scores (P 〈 0.05); economic status positively correlated with emotion, social function, life satisfaction, and total scores (P 〈 0.05); educational level positively correlated with attack worry, cognitive function, and total scores (P 〈 0.05); course of disease negatively correlated with social function (P 〈 0.05); and age negatively correlated with life satisfaction (P 〈 0.05). Scores from partial seizures in cognitive function and drug influence were significantly higher than scores of general seizures (P 〈 0.05), and scores of single drug treatment compared to life satisfaction were also significantly higher than scores of multi-drug treatments (P 〈 0.05). CONCLUSION: Attack frequency, attack type, economic status, educational level, drug amount, age, and course of disease are influence factors for quality of life in epileptic adults.展开更多

The present study is firstly to investigate the correlations between HRQOL and psychological distress in ICU survivors through the GHQ-28, and then affirms the need to carry out follow-up checks for psychiatric symptoms in ICU survivors.
文摘The present study examines the factorial structure and assesses the psychometric properties of the adapted multidimensional Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II Scale, considering a sample of Italian university students who participated to an online survey. The multidimensionality of the scale was also confirmed by a second-order factor model.
文摘<strong>Purpose:</strong> We explored parents’ perceptions and judgment formation processes concerning their infants’ health-related quality of life (HRQOL). <strong>Method:</strong> The PedsQLTM Infant Scales—an instrument specifically designed for infants aged 1 - 24 months—were translated into Japanese. The result of this study will be helpful in improving healthcare communication and interpreting parents’ judgments of their infants’ HRQOL in future studies.

文摘AIM:To evaluate the SF-36, Diabetes Specificity Quality of Life Scale (DSQL) and anxiety and depression symptoms and investigate its changes in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) by vitrectomy interventions. Surgery interventions can improve SF-36, DSQL, anxiety and depression in PDR patients.

文摘BACKGROUND Although total or subtotal colectomy for slow-transit constipation(STC)has been proven to be a definite treatment, the associated defecation function and quality of life(QOL)are rarely studied.AIM To evaluate the effectiveness of surgery for STC regarding defecation function and QOL.METHODS From March 2013 to September 2017,30 patients undergoing surgery for STC in our department were analyzed.Preoperative,intra-operative,and postoperative 3-mo,6-mo,1-year,and 2-year follow-up details were recorded.Defecation function was assessed by bowel movements, abdominal pain, bloating, straining, laxative, enema use, diarrhea, and the Wexner constipation and incontinence scales.QOL was evaluated using the gastrointestinal QOL index and the 36-item short form survey.RESULTS The majority of patients(93.1%,27/29)stated that they benefited from the operation at the 2-year follow-up.At each time point of the follow-up,the number of bowel movements per week significantly increased compared with that of the preoperative conditions(P<0.05).Similarly,compared with the preoperative values,a marked decline was observed in bloating, straining, laxative, and enema use at each time point of the follow-up(P<0.05).Postoperative diarrhea could be controlled effectively and notably improved at the 2-year follow-up.The Wexner incontinence scores at 6-mo,1-year,and 2-year were notably lower than those at the 3-mo follow-up(P<0.05).Compared with those of the preoperative findings, the Wexner constipation scores significantly decreased following surgery(P<0.05).Thus,it was reasonable to find that the gastrointestinal QOL index scores clearly increase(P<0.05)and that the 36-item short form survey results displayed considerable improvements in six spheres(role physical, role emotional, physical pain, vitality, mental health, and general health)following surgery.CONCLUSION Total or subtotal colectomy for STC is not only effective in alleviating constipation-related symptoms but also in enhancing patients’QOL.
文摘BACKGROUND: Research focused on the quality of life of epileptic patients began only very recently in China; in particular, most research has focused on children, but less on epileptic adults. CONCLUSION: Attack frequency, attack type, economic status, educational level, drug amount, age, and course of disease are influence factors for quality of life in epileptic adults.

文摘Objective Improvement in the quality of life is reflected in the narrowing of the gap between healthadjusted life expectancy(HALE)and life expectancy(LE).The effect of megacity expansion on narrowing the gap is rarely reported. This study aimed to disclose this potential relationship. Methods Annual life tables were constructed from identified death records and population counts from multiple administrative sources in Guangzhou,China, from 2010 to 2020.Joinpoint regression was used to evaluate the temporal trend.Generalized principal component analysis and multilevel models were applied to examine the county-level association between the gap and social determinants. Results Although LE and HALE in megacities are increasing steadily, their gap is widening.Socioeconomic and health services are guaranteed to narrow this gap.Increasing personal wealth,a growing number of newborns and healthy immigrants, high urbanization, and healthy aging have helped in narrowing this gap. Conclusion In megacities, parallel LE and HALE growth should be highly considered to narrow their gap.Multiple social determinants need to be integrated as a whole to formulate public health plans.
文摘Background:There has been no a specific scale to measure quality of life (QOL) for prostate cancer patients receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) to date. This study aimed to develop and initially validate the scale to evaluate QOL for prostate cancer patients receiving ADT.Methods:The scale was developed following international recommendations. Moreover, the items were all generated through literature review and referenced questionnaires. After being reviewed by expert panelists, the revised scale was formed and then completed by a convenience sample of 200 prostate cancer patients from our hospital.Explore factor analysis (EFA) was applied to test the construct validity, then split-half reliability,Cronbach&#39;s alpha, and test-retest reliability were applied to assess the reliability and stability of the scale. Results:The revised scale contained 22 items and a total of 200 participants had completed the scale. One hundred participants were randomly selected from the total 200 participants to perform EFA with varimax rotation on the revised scale, and &quot;hot flashes&quot; item was deleted for low factor loading. We selected only 3 items from each factor, then, the final scale was formed with 18-items.We selected another 100 participants to perform the EFA again on the final scale. It was demonstrated that the structure with 6 factors explained 72.5% of total variance and factor loading value was above 0.40 in all items of the factors. Moreover, the split-half reliability coefficient,Cronbach&#39;s alpha, and test-retest reliability coefficient were calculated to be 0.74,0.63,and 0.89,respectively,exhibiting good reliability on the whole. Conclusions:The scale was identified to be a valid and reliable instrument to measure QOL for prostate cancer patients receiving ADT.Moreover, further research is needed to overcome the potential drawbacks.
