It supplies a broad stage for the development of urban citizens' linguistic competence, which in turn constitutes the basis and motive force of the new-style urbanization and plays a pivotal role in its construction. Proceeding from linguistic competence is an effective measure for dealing with some of the thorny problems arising in the course of new-style urbanization, while new-style urbanization offers an opportunity for the improvement of urban citizens' linguistic competence.展开更多

There are quite a lot of approaches to make it, if properly applied. This paper intends to present one approach --- the whole language teaching approach in college English teaching. By applying this approach, the emphasis should be laid on the use of language rather than knowledge learning. Also, this paper will present in detail the application of this approach in teaching New Horizon College English.展开更多

The paper tries to analyze the difficulties encountered by the L2 learners in the process of acquiring listening skills and competence in an attempt to find out how these problems are related to classroom teaching, and their implications for pedagogical classroom practice.展开更多

It features empirical and theoretical studies on cognitive approaches to language, using a variety of methodological approaches, from behavioral measures to neuroimaging. The topics discussed are varied, ranging from language comprehension and acquisition to the language-emotion interactions, reflecting marked broadening of the research agenda in this field. We invite yet more integrated research to move the field forward.展开更多

The author argues for the assumption that students' pragmatic competence varies consistently with their linguistic competence in most cases, but their high pragmatic competence seems to presuppose high linguistic competence. This paper also looks into how high-level learners differ from low-level learners in developing their pragmatic competence. The purpose of this study is to guide pedagogical attention to both pragmatic knowledge and linguistic knowledge in English teaching.展开更多

The use of the application, called Versant English Test, is examined in the context of a country where English is not the first language of communication, in order to determine whether or not English as the first language of the country in which the test is taken could have a bearing on the test result. As suggested by Chun(2006), this study compares the results achieved by test takers in a non-English speaking environment with those obtained by different test takers in an English speaking environment. To be able to decide whether the Versant is more prone to setting-related bias than other English proficiency tests, the Versant test scores are correlated with the TOEFL scores of the test-takers in a non-English speaking setting and the correlation coefficient is then compared with that achieved in an English-speaking environment. The results suggest that the correlation between the Versant and TOEFL in a non-English-speaking environment is not significantly different from that obtained in an English-speaking environment.展开更多
