Linguistic landscape and its impacts on place-making in mountain destination:A case of Mogan Mountain Town of Huzhou City,China

The place and placeness are believed to be a crucial perspective for comprehending the transformative dynamics of tourist destinations in the context of globalization and the rapid development of the tourism industry.As the material carrier of language,linguistic landscape is an intermediary for people to endow emotions and personalities into the place,becoming an effective path for exploring the place-making in a certain area.Mogan Mountain is a famous national tourist resort,which is located in Mogan Mountain Town,Deqing County,Huzhou City,China.This is a good case area for studying the relationship between linguistic landscape and placemaking in tourist destinations.There are two theories that form the theoretical foundation of the study,namely the place and the geosemiotics.Firstly,the results showed the overall style of the linguistic landscape.Multilingual labelling(52.7%),official signs(55.3%),and standardized Chinese characters predominantly shaped the linguistic landscape,with English and other languages being complementary.Secondly,from the perspective of three dimensions of the geosemiotics framework,such as inscription,language preference,and placement position,we conduct a comprehensive semiotic analysis of the linguistic landscape,which encompasses diverse facets such as fonts,materials,shifts in state,text vectors,and symmetrical arrangements.Finally,we explore the influence of linguistic landscapes on the place-making of Mogan Mountain through the dimensions of location,locale,and sense of place.The information on linguistic landscapes indicates the geographical location.These linguistic landscapes play an important role in constructing the language order,nostalgic atmosphere,exotic atmosphere,and elegant and tasteful lifestyle of the public space in Mogan Mountain.Readers of linguistic landscapes,including tourists and residents,generate and identify with the unique sense of place in Mogan Mountain.These linguistic landscapes construct the destination placeness of Mogan Mountain that combines both foreign and nostalgic styles,and the integration of Chinese and Western cultures.It will help promote the image positioning of tourism destinations and have practical guiding significance for the tourism planning,landscape-making,language management,and other aspects of tourism destinations.

Investigation and Analysis of the Linguistic Landscape in High-end Consumer Business District in Guangzhou——Taking TaiKoo Hui as an Example

Linguistic landscape has become an emerging research topic in sociolinguistics due to the development of urban linguistic landscape.Based on the development of linguistic landscape in TaiKoo Hui,its diverse characteristics are analyzed,and the language signs,usage,and codes are summarized.It is found that there is poor transmission effect of multilingual landscape information and improper use of linguistic landscape in TaiKoo Hui.This paper concludes that the linguistic landscape of Taikoo Hui can be optimized from two aspects to enhance its attractiveness and competitiveness,including improving the informational function of foreign language signs and regulating the use of linguistic landscape.

Contrastive Study of Public Sign Translation and Linguistic Landscape from the National Strategy Perspective

Study on public sign translation and linguistic landscape has become the most practical way of serving the national strategy of language service by the Chinese linguistic scholars.Contrasts of their definitions,functions,research scope and perspectives,and research content are made and approaches to coordinating the two research fields are proposed.It is pointed out that the two concepts are neither the same nor contradictive.Linguistic landscape study can only be enriched and better serve the national strategy if the research fruits of public sign translation are absorbed.

Translocalization and Social Rescaling:Case Studies of Linguistic Landscapes in Guangzhou

Languages and linguistic resources transport from one locality to another,adapting to the norms,customs,and regulations of a new locality.This process involves translocalization.Translocalization emphasizes the movement of linguistic resources against the backdrop of globalization and the combination or reframing of resources from different localities.This research explores the extent to which translocalization is reflected by the linguistic landscapes of three distinct commercial areas in Guangzhou,China.It goes on to discuss how translocalization works together with social rescaling to incur the movement of linguistic resources and to result in distinct linguistic landscapes of the three commercial areas.It concludes that some languages or linguistic resources,such as English,pinyin and traditional Chinese writing,are transported to local contexts for the purpose of rescaling,whereas other languages or dialects,like Cantonese,might gradually lose their function of rescaling and retain its function in indexing local identity and solidarity.This study calls for more attention to the local resources and contexts in linguistic landscape studies.It argues for the indexical function of linguistic resources in social rescaling and city planning.

Mapping the Linguistic Landscape of Historic Tourist Attractions:A Case Study of South Luogu Alley in Beijing

The linguistic landscape of traditional historic tourist attractions has undergone heterogeneous changes under the impact of globalization and tourism development.Guided by the linguistic landscape construction principle and meaning combination analysis,taking the linguistic landscape of South Luogu Al ey in Beijing as the research object,its unique presentation and formation mechanism are analyzed and explicated in this paper.In the first part,we describe the elements of tradition and modernity presented in both private and official linguistic landscape.In the second part,we explain these characteristics,and the results show that:traditional elements dominated with each presents unique characteristics while modern elements especially English have been extensively employed than ever before,functioning as the information disseminator and prestige symbol.Finally,certain degrees of problems need to be meticulously considered so as to foster the renewal progress of the historic tourist attractions.

Multilingual Practices and Multiple Contestations in the Linguistic Landscape of Selected Towns in Oromia:A geosemiotic perspective

This study analyzed a linguistic landscape,which is a relatively recent development in sociolinguistic research committed to the investigation of the visual manifestations of the relationships observed between language or semiosis and society in the public space.There has been less attention on the semiotic interpretations in the public environments despite the ubiquitous nature of such signs in Ethiopia.This study intends to fill this gap through Semiotic Landscape research.By means of mixed methods,qualitative and quantitative,it aims to discover the contestations in the Linguistic Landscape(LL,henceforth)of selected urban environments in Oromia.The study employed a theoretical concept of geosemiotics from social semiotics as an analytical tool.Visual data consisting of 1275 photographs of signs were collected from the main streets of Adama,Jimma and Sebeta towns from different domains of sign using bodies.Besides,data were collected through in-depth interviews with major LL actors,selected based on purposive sampling technique.The analysis demonstrated that some top-down and most of bottom-up signs showed varieties of multilingual practices,contestations,identity constructions and other related social concerns.The absence of a clear policy on language use on signs at both federal and regional levels has resulted in contestations.

A Review of Linguistic Landscape Studies in China

Linguistic landscape,as an emerging discipline in the sociolinguistics,has gained the extensive attention of the scholars in China and also made great achievements.Linguistic landscape is not a kind of simple,static language usage,but symbolizes the multilingual usage,the implementation of language policy and the culture degree of this city.This paper provides a comprehensive overview of its research object,topics,methods,theoretical frame and perspectives and also points out some problems in the research.In the end,the paper gives some suggestion about the further study.

Translation of Metro Station Names in Guangzhou and Foshan from the Perspective of Symbolic Function of Translation Landscape

Guangzhou and Foshan enjoy relatively mature metro network.However,some names of metro stations are over-transliterated in Pinyin.Such a translation method is used in translating general names,nouns of locality and some names of tourist destinations.With translation landscape and linguistic landscape theories,the reasons and impacts of over-transliteration in Guangzhou and Foshan metro will be discussed from the perspective of symbolic function.English names of Metro stations in other cities serve as a reference so as to appropriate solutions.
