The technology for phase detection of liquid crystal optical device is a difficult research in current domestic and overseas. The technology for phase detection of liquid crystal optical device is a difficult research in current domestic and overseas. However, for the existing liquid crystal optical device, aiming at the poor anti-vibration capability and poor versatile of phase detection, the complexity of phase retrieval algorithm, we propose a new phase measurement principle and experimental methods of liquid crystal optical device. It is a phase measurement method based on the combination of phase- shifting interferometer and phase conjugation technology. The deflection characteristics of the liquid crystal device means the device can implement phase modulation to only one direction of polarized light while is completely transparent to orthogonal polarized light. We put forward the phase shift of the orthogonal polarization phase shift interferometer method, using phase shifting interference as well as the combination of phase conjugate means to achieve its phase measurement. So we can retrieves devices modulation phase simply and efficiently combines with phase- shifting interferometer technology. 展开更多

We propose a liquid crystal planar doublet as the information carrier, and new holograms generated by the new coupled phases when the relative displacements of the different liquid crystal layers change. The designed geometrical phases are generated by an optimized iterative restoration algorithm, and each holographic image formed by these phases is readable. This scheme achieves an increase in the capacity of the stored secret information and provides more misdirection, which is expected to have potential value in optical steganography and storage. 展开更多

A polarization-independent nonmechanical laser beam steering scheme is proposed to realize continuous two-dimensional(2 D) scanning with high efficiency, where the core components are two polarization-dependent devices, which are called liquid crystal optical phased arrays(LC-OPAs). These two one-dimensional(1D) devices are orthogonally cascaded to work on the state of azimuthal and elevation steering, respectively. Properties of polarization independence as well as 2D beam steering are mathematically and experimentally verified with a good agreement. Based on the experimental setup, linearly polarized beams with different polarization angles are steered with high accuracy. The measured angular deviations are less than 5 μrad, which is on the same order of the accuracy of the measurement system. This polarization-independent 2 D laser beam steering scheme has potential application for nonmechanical laser communication, lidar, and other LC-based systems. 展开更多

Critical concentrations of lyotropic liquid crystalline ethylcellulose in more than ten solvents were determined using both Abbe refractometer and polarized microscopy. Critical concentration C-crit of forming Liquid crystal phase decreased with increasing solubility parameter delta of solvent until approaching the delta of polymer. Although the alcohols used as solvents had the same variation rule, the critical concentration values of their solutions were much higher, due to their excessive large hydrogen bond component of delta. The experiments of using mixed solvents which showed good linear relation between C-crit and delta also proved this rule. A technique of Transmission Optical Analysis was first used to estimate the concentration dependence of critical phase transition temperature T-crit of EC, and a T-C phase diagram could be drawn. 展开更多

Adaptive optics(AO) systems are widespread and considered as an essential part of any large aperture telescope for obtaining a high resolution imaging at present.To enlarge the imaging field of view(FOV),multi-laser guide stars(LGSs) are currently being investigated and used for the large aperture optical telescopes.LGS measurement is necessary and pivotal to obtain the cumulative phase distortion along a target in the multi-LGSs AO system.We propose a high precision phase reconstruction algorithm to estimate the phase for a target with an uncertain turbulence profile based on the interpolation.By comparing with the conventional average method,the proposed method reduces the root mean square(RMS) error from 130 nm to 85 nm with a 30% reduction for narrow FOV.We confirm that such phase reconstruction algorithm is validated for both narrow field AO and wide field AO. 展开更多

This paper presents a systematic investigation and demonstration of a K-band circularly polarized liquidcrystal-based phased array(LCPA),including the design,over-the-air(OTA)in-array calibration,and experimental validation.The LCPA contains 16 phase-shifting radiating channels,each consisting of a circularly polarized stacked patch antenna and a liquid-crystal-based phase shifter(LCPS)based on a loaded differential line structure.Thanks to its slow-wave properties,the LCPS exhibits a maximum phase-shifting range of more than 360°with a figure of merit of 78.3(°)·dB^(-1)based on a liquid crystal layer with a thickness of only 5μm.Furthermore,an automatic OTA calibration based on a state ergodic method is proposed,which enables the extraction of the phase-voltage curve of every individual LCPA channel.The proposed LCPA is manufactured and characterized with a total profile of only 1.76 mm,experimentally demonstrating a scanned circularly polarized beam from-40°to+40°with a measured peak gain of 12.5 dBic and a scanning loss of less than 2.5 dB.The bandwidth of the LCPA,which satisfies the require-ments of port reflection(|S_(11)|)<-15 dB,an axial ratio(AR)<3 dB,beam squinting<3°,and a gain variation<2.2 dB,spans from 25.5 to 26.0 GHz.The total efficiency is about 34%,which represents a new state of the art.The use of the demonstrated low-profile LCPA to support circularly polarized scanning beams,along with the systematic design and calibration methodology,holds potential promise for a variety of millimeter-wave applications. 展开更多

Multi-conjugation adaptive optics(MCAOs) have been investigated and used in the large aperture optical telescopes for high-resolution imaging with large field of view(FOV).The atmospheric tomographic phase reconstruction and projection of three-dimensional turbulence volume onto wavefront correctors,such as deformable mirrors(DMs) or liquid crystal wavefront correctors(LCWCs),is a very important step in the data processing of an MCAO's controller.In this paper,a method according to the wavefront reconstruction performance of MCAO is presented to evaluate the optimized configuration of multi laser guide stars(LGSs) and the reasonable conjugation heights of LCWCs.Analytical formulations are derived for the different configurations and are used to generate optimized parameters for MCAO.Several examples are given to demonstrate our LGSs configuration optimization method.Compared with traditional methods,our method has minimum wavefront tomographic error,which will be helpful to get higher imaging resolution at large FOV in MCAO. 展开更多

The initial distortion phase is determined by measuring the reflective interference, and modulation of device is compensated by using our system.
