Belief Propagation List Decoding for Polar Codes:Performance Analysis and Software Implementation on GPU

Belief propagation(BP)decoding outputs soft information and can be naturally used in iterative receivers.BP list(BPL)decoding provides comparable error-correction performance to the successive cancellation list(SCL)decoding.In this paper,we firstly introduce an enhanced code construction scheme for BPL decoding to improve its errorcorrection capability.Then,a GPU-based BPL decoder with adoption of the new code construction is presented.Finally,the proposed BPL decoder is tested on NVIDIA RTX3070 and GTX1060.Experimental results show that the presented BPL decoder with early termination criterion achieves above 1 Gbps throughput on RTX3070 for the code(1024,512)with 32 lists under good channel conditions.

List-Serial Pipelined Hardware Architecture for SCL Decoding of Polar Codes

For polar codes,the performance of successive cancellation list(SCL)decoding is capable of approaching that of maximum likelihood decoding.However,the existing hardware architectures for the SCL decoding suffer from high hardware complexity due to calculating L decoding paths simultaneously,which are unfriendly to the devices with limited logical resources,such as field programmable gate arrays(FPGAs).In this paper,we propose a list-serial pipelined hardware architecture with low complexity for the SCL decoding,where the serial calculation and the pipelined operation are elegantly combined to strike a balance between the complexity and the latency.Moreover,we employ only one successive cancellation(SC)decoder core without L×L crossbars,and reduce the number of inputs of the metric sorter from 2L to L+2.Finally,the FPGA implementations show that the hardware resource consumption is significantly reduced with negligible decoding performance loss.

Improved Segmented Belief Propagation List Decoding for Polar Codes with Bit-Flipping

Belief propagation list(BPL) decoding for polar codes has attracted more attention due to its inherent parallel nature. However, a large gap still exists with CRC-aided SCL(CA-SCL) decoding.In this work, an improved segmented belief propagation list decoding based on bit flipping(SBPL-BF) is proposed. On the one hand, the proposed algorithm makes use of the cooperative characteristic in BPL decoding such that the codeword is decoded in different BP decoders. Based on this characteristic, the unreliable bits for flipping could be split into multiple subblocks and could be flipped in different decoders simultaneously. On the other hand, a more flexible and effective processing strategy for the priori information of the unfrozen bits that do not need to be flipped is designed to improve the decoding convergence. In addition, this is the first proposal in BPL decoding which jointly optimizes the bit flipping of the information bits and the code bits. In particular, for bit flipping of the code bits, a H-matrix aided bit-flipping algorithm is designed to enhance the accuracy in identifying erroneous code bits. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm significantly improves the errorcorrection performance of BPL decoding for medium and long codes. It is more than 0.25 d B better than the state-of-the-art BPL decoding at a block error rate(BLER) of 10^(-5), and outperforms CA-SCL decoding in the low signal-to-noise(SNR) region for(1024, 0.5)polar codes.

Patient Safety in the Use of Mechanical Restraints: Regulatory Compliance among Hospitals in the City of Buenos Aires and Proposal for Its Improvement

Introduction: Mechanical or physical restraint is an exceptional therapeutic resource to immobilize a subject and thus guarantee the safety of the patient and/or third parties in the face of high-risk behaviors, but it entails multiple crossings (bioethical, philosophical, medical, psychological, legal). Framed in the so-called “safety culture” developed by the WHO, based on the Protocol for its implementation of the CABA and attentive to its frequent use in CABA by different hospital services (medical clinic, geriatrics, intensive care and medical guards) we consider it necessary its study in terms of compliance with the risks it entails and its management. Objectives: Identify regulatory compliance with the GCABA Mechanical restraint (MR) Protocol from a patient safety perspective, as well as describe the clinical and medicolegal aspects, and propose the usefulness of a tool for its management and control. Methodology: Observational, descriptive, transversal and prospective work through the analysis of Clinical Records with indication of MR using a rubric-type form. 177 cases were analyzed between September-November 2023 from three hospitals of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, statistical parameters were applied and graphs were made. Results: Only 12.99% complied with the Protocol. In the mental health specialized hospital compliance was almost 5 times greater than in the general one, and in the emergency services compliance was 12 times greater than in Inpatient services. We found that the start or end time of MR was not recorded and only 43% described the causes/justifications for the indication (mostly in Emergency and Specialized hospitals), with the MR average time being shorter in Emergency. Conclusions: Only 1.3 out of 10 patients reliably completed the Protocol and it was mostly in the mental health specialized hospital and the emergency services. The results show non-compliance behavior in the application and management of the risk that the use of mechanical restraints entails, being causes for criminal litigation. We consider that the checklists are useful to complete the Protocol and thus provide security to patients and professionals.

Evaluation of Need and Distribution of National Essential Medicines List in Village Clinics:A Cross-sectional Study Based on the Perspective of Village Doctors in China

This study aimed to evaluate the satisfaction of village doctors to essential medicines list (EML) and accessibility of essential medicines (EMs) distribution to improve the implementation of EML in village clinics.A total of 422 village doctors from five counties in three provinces of China were surveyed by questionnaires.Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the main factors associated with village doctors' evaluation of EML.The results showed that village doctors had a negative evaluation in satisfaction level of EML to village-based care and accessibility of EM distribution.The government should adjust EML regularly based on the actual health status of local villagers in China and focus on adding appropriate drugs that meet the needs of villagers with chronic disease.The local government should also attach importance to the distribution of EMs and maintain their supply in village clinics.

Overview and detectability of the genetic modifications in ornamental plants

The market of ornamental plants is extremely competitive,and for many species genetic engineering can be used to introduce original traits of high commercial interest.However,very few genetically modified(GM)ornamental varieties have reached the market so far.Indeed,the authorization process required for such plants has a strong impact on the profitability of the development of such products.Considering the numerous scientific studies using genetic modification on ornamental species of interest,a lot of transformed material has been produced,could be of commercial interest and could therefore be unintentionally released on the market.The unintentional use of GM petunia in breeding programs has indeed recently been observed.This review lists scientific publications using GM ornamental plants and tries to identify whether these plants could be detected by molecular biology tools commonly used by control laboratories.

National Lists of Scholarly Publication Channels: An Overview and Recommendations for Their Construction and Maintenance

Purpose: This paper presents an overview of different kinds of lists of scholarly publication channels and of experiences related to the construction and maintenance of national lists supporting performance-based research funding systems. It also contributes with a set of recommendations for the construction and maintenance of national lists of journals and book publishers.Design/methodology/approach: The study is based on analysis of previously published studies, policy papers, and reported experiences related to the construction and use of lists of scholarly publication channels. Findings: Several countries have systems for research funding and/or evaluation, that involve the use of national lists of scholarly publication channels(mainly journals and publishers). Typically, such lists are selective(do not include all scholarly or non-scholarly channels) and differentiated(distinguish between channels of different levels and quality). At the same time, most lists are embedded in a system that encompasses multiple or all disciplines. This raises the question how such lists can be organized and maintained to ensure that all relevant disciplines and all types of research are adequately represented. Research limitation: The conclusions and recommendations of the study are based on the authors' interpretation of a complex and sometimes controversial process with many different stakeholders involved.Practical implications: The recommendations and the related background information provided in this paper enable mutual learning that may feed into improvements in the construction and maintenance of national and other lists of scholarly publication channels in any geographical context. This may foster a development of responsible evaluation practices.Originality/value: This paper presents the first general overview and typology of different kinds of publication channel lists, provides insights on expert-based versus metrics-based evaluation, and formulates a set of recommendations for the responsible construction and maintenance of publication channel lists.

Performance Evaluation of China's Agricultural Listed Companies Based on DEA Model

In order to evaluate the performance of China's agricultural listed companies,we analyze the overall efficiency,pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency of China's agricultural listed companies on the basis of input-output data concerning 34 agricultural listed companies,using BCC model in data envelopment analysis ( DEA) model. Then we analyze input-output redundancy situation using the slack variable derived from the model. The results show that the overall efficiency of China's agricultural listed companies is good,and the gap in efficiency between sub-industries is small; there is significant difference in performance between listed companies engaged in the same sub-industry,and the reason for invalid DEA in companies within the industry is complex; total assets and asset-liability ratio are high,and the effective output is not fully realized. Finally corresponding recommendations are put forward for promoting the performance of agricultural listed companies as follows: strengthening brand awareness; promoting the level of production technology; adjusting the input structure; transforming the agricultural growth mode.

Evaluation of urban underground space resources using a negative list method: Taking Xi'an City as an example in China

Utilization of urban underground space has become a vital approach to alleviate the strain on urban land resources,and to optimize the structure and pattem of the city.It is also very important to improve the city environment,build livable city and increase the capacity of the city.Based on the analysis of existing evaluation methods and their problems,a method for evaluating underground space resources based on a negative list of adverse factors affecting underground space development is proposed,to be primarily used in urban planning stages.A list of the adverse factors is established,including limiting factors,constraining factors and influencing factors.Taking Xi'an as an example,using a geographical information system platform,a negative list of adverse factors for the underground space resources in Xi'an City are evaluated,and preventive measures are proposed.Natural resources,exploitable resources,and the potential growth of exploitable underground space resources are evaluated.Underground space assessment in the different development stages of the city,collaborative utilization and safety evaluation for multiple subsurface resources,environmental impact and assessment,as well as evaluation methods based on big data and intelligent optimization algorithms are all discussed with the aim of serving city planning and construction.

Contemporary characteristics and outcomes of adults with familial dilated cardiomyopathy listed for heart transplantation

BACKGROUND Familial dilated cardiomyopathy(FDCM) account for 20%-30% of non-ischemic cardiomyopathies(NICM). Previous published data showed that some patients with FDCM tend to have rapidly progressive disease; however, five-year mortality was not significantly different in the familial and non-familial forms of NICM with optimal medical therapy.AIM To better define the characteristics and clinical outcomes of FDCM patients listed for heart transplantation(HT).METHODS We queried the United Network for Organ Sharing Registry to identify FDCM patients listed for HT between January 2008 and September 2015 and compared them to NICM and ischemic cardiomyopathy(ICM) patients. We included all patients ≥ 18 years old and we separated patients to three groups: FDCM, NICM and ICM. Chi-square test was used to compare between categorical variables, the t-test was used to compare between continues variables, and Cox-proportional hazards model was used to perform time-dependent survival analyses.RESULTS Of the 24809 adults listed for HT, we identified 677 patients(2.7%) with the diagnosis of FDCM. Compared to patients with NICM and ICM, FDCM patients were younger(FDCM 43.9 ± 13.5 vs NICM 50.9 ± 12.3, P < 0.001, vs ICM 58.5 ±8.1, P < 0.001), more frequently listed as status 2(FDCM 35.2% vs NICM 26.5%, P< 0.001), with significantly lower left ventricular assist device(LVAD) utilization(FDCM 18.4% vs NICM 25.1%, P < 0.001; vs ICM 25.6%, P < 0.001), but higher use of total artificial heart(FDCM 1.3% vs NICM 0.6%, P = 0.039; vs ICM 0.4%, P =0.002). Additionally, patients with FDCM were less frequently delisted for clinical deterioration or death and more likely to be transplanted compared to those with NICM [hazard ratio(HR): 0.617, 95% confidence interval(CI): 0.47-0.81; HR: 1.25,95%CI: 1.14-1.37, respectively], and ICM(HR: 0.5, 95%CI: 0.38-0.66; HR: 1.18,95%CI: 1.08-1.3, respectively). There was more frequent rejection among patients with FDCM(FDCM 11.4% vs NICM 9.8%, P = 0.28; vs ICM 8.4%, P = 0.034). One,three, and five post-transplant survival of patients with FDCM(91%, 88% and80%) was similar to those with NICM(91%, 84%, 79%, P = 0.225), but superior to those with ICM(89%, 82%, 75%, P = 0.008), respectively.CONCLUSION End-stage FDCM patients are more likely to be transplanted, more likely to have early rejection, and have similar or higher survival than patients with other cardiomyopathies.
