On Cultivation of Autonomous Learning Competence in College English Listening Teaching

One of the important aspects of new education curriculum reform in China is to promote students＇ learning style, that is, to change from the center of the teachers ＂giving-receiving＂ education gradually to the center of students ＂autonomic learning＂. Although it is a common view that autonomous learning will efficiently improve the ability of learners, it remains blank in the area of listening teaching. This paper makes a brief introduction on autonomous learning and makes concrete analysis of the definitions of autonomous learning. It also analyzes the factors affecting English listening and the problems in listening teaching in colleges and proposes effective measures and suggestions. This paper attempts to validate the effectiveness of autonomous learning in college English teaching, which can serve as guidance for both teachers and students.

Considerations on College English Listening Teaching in China

Listening teaching is an important part of English teaching in China. However, there are some problems existing in practical listening teaching and textbooks： test-centered teaching and no theories and principles provided by textbooks. In fact, what we are doing in the listening teaching is to test rather than to teach, to foster passive receivers rather than active learners, to teach blindly without theoretical guidance. This article intends to analyze these problems from a theoretical perspective and puts forward some suggestions to solve the present problems.

An Empirical Study of Applying English Films and TV Programs to English-Listening Teaching

This is a study of the feasibility and effects of teaching listening with films and TV programs. The research is a part of the English Learning Program directed by ZHANG Zhen, which is sponsored by Academic Affairs Office of Leshan Normal University. The researcher of the program sought for theretical bases from Krashen＇s Input Hypothesis, the Motivation Theory, the Context Theory, and the Communicative Language Teaching Theory. Then the author introduced a pilot study conducted by utilizing films or TV programs to teach listening from September 2010 till now. The statistic results from the experiment suggest that there is indeed some correlations between teaching listening with films or TV programs and a learner＇s listening comprehension in general in language achievement tests at certain stages. The scores of the students from the experimental group are improved after two years of teaching with the new methods. Analyses and discussions have been done based on a questionnaire and an interview. The results showed that both the teachers and the students had positive attitudes towards teaching listening with films or TV programs. Most of them view this method as an effective way in ELT （English language teaching）, because it provides more opportunities for contextual practice, lower their anxiety; it can also help to motivate them, stimulate their active participation and increase their activities as well. Therefore, this method can be used to cultivate students＇ communicative competence. Consequently, we can draw the conclusion that this method has some advantages over teaching listening with the pre-taped materials in New College English. It may play an important role in ELT, especially in listening teaching. Based on the statistic analyses and the survey, some activities and techniques are provided for the teacher on how to teach listening with films or TV programs. The roles that an English teacher plays in this method are illustrated at the end of the thesis.

Metacognitive Strategy and College English Listening Teaching

Metacognitive strategy, as one of the branches of learning strategy, can help students to consciously plan, monitor and evaluate their language learning, thus facilitate it. As a matter of fact, listeuing has long been regarded as an important linguistic skill to be developed in college English teaching. However, there are still some misunderstandings which exist among teachers and students. With the development of second language acquisition and listening comprehension, it becomes clear that listening is an active process in which the listener negotiates meanings in a conscious way. Therefore, if teachers can train students in metacognitive strategies in college English listening teaching, students can consciously plan, monitor and evaluate the entire listening process and become an active listener, thus improve their listening proficiency.

Teaching Listening in a Communicative Classroom

In China, teaching English listening in a traditional way has caused many problems which have been noticed and studied by experts. Reforms of CET4 and CET6 appeal to teachers to change listening teaching. With its advantages, it is believed that Communicative Language Teaching （CLT） will effectively solve the problems.

A Discussion of Foreign Language Listening Problems and Their Causes among Intermediate EFL learners in Chinese universities

Listening has been considered as the most important language skill by many researchers but in Chinese context it has been overlooked for years.The Foreign Language(FL)listening problems gradually reveal when students attend to the Listening Course in universities or colleges.This paper at first illustrates the importance of listening in foreign language learning and provides a discussion on the top-down and bottom-up processes with the analysis of Anderson's three-model of language comprehension[9]as well as the factors affecting listening comprehension in Foreign Language in general,aiming at the illustration of the necessity on one of the bottom-up processes-the Spoken Word Recognition(SWR).The analysis of two issued official guiding documents for Chinese university students and the current situation of English listening teaching in Chinese universities are followed,providing a general background on English listening teaching in Chinese context.Three possible foreign language listening problems and their causes are proposed,followed by the pedagogical suggestions to EFL learners who are improving their listening skills and instructors who are advancing their teaching procedures.

Application of Scaffolding Instructional Models to English Listening Comprehension

The paper tries to research Scaffolding Instructional Model in listening English teaching. There will be the theoretical research of Scaffolding Instructional Model and then the findings confirmed by the questionnaire. The subjects in the experiment is a group of 80 students randomly selected from the Grade Three at a senior high school in Yili. The questionnaire I presents that the students are on the close level of English listening. They are divided into Experimental Group and Control Group. The Scaffolding Instructional Model will be used on the Experimental Group and Control Group will take the traditional teaching method. After four weeks two groups will attend the listening post-test and questionnaire II. According to the analysis of experimental data, the Experimental Group would get better listening comprehension grades than the Control Group.

In English language teaching, learning strategies are essential for improving students＇ learning efficiency as well as cultivate students＇ ability of self-regulated learning; and metacognitive strategy is of such strategies, which has attracted many language teachers＇ attention. However, not many research have focus on listening teaching on the level of senior high school in China's Mainland. This research is to fill in this gap with an introduction to listening strategies in metacognitive strategies and a sample of listening class design.
