Concrete is considered to be a two-phase composite made up of micro-cracks and solid parts which consist of coarse aggregate particles and a cement mortar matrix. The cement mortar matrix is assumed to be elastic, homogeneous and isotropic. Based on the Moil-Tanaka concept of average stress and the Eshelby equivalent inclusion theory, a dynamic constitutive model is developed to simulate the impact responses of concrete. The impact compression experiments of concrete and cement mortar are also carried out. Experimental results show that concrete and cement mortar are rate-dependent. Under the same impact velocity, the load-carrying capacity of concrete is higher than that of cement mortar. Whereas, the maximum strain of concrete is lower than that of cement mortar. Regardless of whether it is concrete or cement mortar, with the increase in the impact velocity, the fragment size of specimens after experiment decreases.展开更多

This paper reports a numerical investigation to address the responses of jointed rock masses subjected to impact loading. It also focuses on the static and dynamic properties of an intact rock derived from a series of laboratory tests on meta-sandstone samples from a quarry in Nova Scotia, Canada. A distinct element code(PFC2D) was used to generate a bonded particle model(BPM) to simulate both the static and dynamic properties of the intact rock. The calibrated BPM was then used to construct large-scale jointed rock mass samples by incorporating discrete joint networks of multiple joint intensities into the intact rock matrix represented by the BPM. Finally, the impact-induced damage inflicted by a rigid projectile particle on the jointed rock mass samples was determined through the use of the numerical model. The simulation results show that joints play an important role in the impactinduced rock mass damage where higher joint intensity results in more damage to the rock mass. This is mainly attributed to variations of stress wave propagation in jointed rock masses as compared to intact rock devoid of joints.展开更多

The impact energy of a striker was applied on the fixed aluminum foam having a thickness of 25 mm while increasing its impact by 2 J at each strike from 6 J to 16 J. The results show that the impact energies from 6 J to 12 J could not penetrate aluminum foam. However, the aluminum foam applied with the impact energy of 12 J incurred severe damages on its lower part. Finally, the aluminum foam applied with the impact energy of 14 J was penetrated. The striker having the impact energy of 6 J could penetrate aluminum foam around 10 mm. At this moment, aluminum foam could absorb the impact energy of around 9 J. When the impact energy of 14 J was applied on the aluminum foam, the aluminum foam was penetrated and it absorbed the impact energy of around 17.2 J. It is possible to create the safer structure against impact using the results of this work. The simulation results for the verification of the experimental results imply that the results for all the experiments in this work are reliable. It is possible to predict the structural safety of the aluminum foam for an impact if the impact behavior of aluminum foam performed in this work is utilized.展开更多

However, the same lightweight combined with low stiffness make membranes prone to vibration under dynamic loads, and in some cases the vibration may lead to structural failure. Herein, the undamped nonlinear vibration response of pretension rectangular orthotropic membrane structures subjected to impact loading is studied by analytical and numerical methods. The analytical solution is obtained by solving the governing equations by the Bubnov-Galerkin method and the Lindstedt-Poincare perturbation method. Numerical analysis has also been carried out based on the same theoretical model. The analytical and numerical results have been compared and analyzed, and the influence of various model parameters on membrane vibration discussed. The results obtained herein provide some theoretical basis for the vibration control and dynamic design of orthotropic membrane components and structures.展开更多

The fracture experiment was a three-point bending beam subjected to different impact loads monitored using the reflected caustics method. The mechanical parameters for fracture of the three-poim bending beam specimen under impact load are analyzed. The mechanism of crack propagation is discussed. Experimental results show that the dynamic stress intensity factor increases before crack initiation. When the dynamic stress intensity factor reaches its maximum value the crack starts to develop. After crack initiation the dynamic stress intensity factor decreases rapidly and oscillates. As the impact rate increases the cracks initiate earlier, the maximum value of crack growth velocity becomes smaller and the values of dynamic stress intensity factor also vary less during crack propagation. The results provide a theoretical basis for the study of rock dynamic fracture.展开更多

Progressive collapse analysis is essential for an economic and safe design of building structures against progressive collapse to blast and impact loads. Because of the catastrophic nature of progressive collapse and the potentially high cost of constructing or retrofitting buildings to resist it, it is imperative that the progressive collapse analysis methods be reliable. For engineers, their methodology to carry out progressive collapse evaluation need not only be accurate and concise, but also be easily used and works fast. Thus, many researchers have been spending lots of effort in developing reliable, efficient and straightforward progressive collapse analysis methods recently. In the present paper, current progressive collapse analysis methods available in the literature are reviewed. Their suitability, applicability and reliability are discussed. Our recent proposed new method for progressive collapse analysis of reinforced concrete frames under blast loads is also introduced.展开更多

In this study, the combined effects of ship collision and wave loads are considered to establish motion differential equations for a multi-body VLFS. A time domain calculation method is proposed to calculate the connector load of the VLFS in waves. The Longuet-Higgins model is employed to simulate the stochastic wave load. Fluid force and hydrodynamic coefficient are obtained with DNV Sesam software. The motion differential equation is calculated by applying the time domain method when the frequency domain hydrodynamic coefficient is converted into the memory function of the motion differential equation of the time domain. As a result of the combined action of wave and impact loads, high-frequency oscillation is observed in the time history curve of the connector load. At wave directions of 0° and 75°, the regularities of the time history curves of the connector loads in different directions are similar and the connector loads of C1 and C2 in the X direction are the largest. The oscillation load is observed in the connector in the Y direction at a wave direction of 75° and not at 0° This paper presents a time domain calculation method of connector load to provide a certain reference function for the future development of Chinese VLFS展开更多

TE (the time that the end of impact force) and TF (the time that members are broken) are two key times in the failure process. Characteristics of dynamic responses at the two key times are shown in order to make the failure mechanism clear. Then three steps of energy transfer are summarized, i.e. energy applying, energy loss and energy transfer, energy consump-tion. Based on the three steps, energy transfer process for the failure reticulated dome under once impact is introduced. Energy transmissibility and local loss ratio are put forward firstly to obtain EL F(the energy left in the main reticulated dome) from the initial kinetic energy of impactor. More-over, the distribution of failure modes is decided by EL F which leads to the maximum dynamic re-sponse of the reticulated dome, but not by the initial impact kinetic energy of impactor.展开更多

Based on the experimental results, the stress-strain curves are analyzed and the effects of confi ning pressure and strain rates on the dynamic compressive strength, peak strain and failure mode are summarized. The results show that:(1) The characteristics of two rocks in the ascent stage of the stressstrain curve are basically the same, but in the descent stage, the rocks gradually show plastic deformation characteristics as the confi ning pressure increases.(2) The dynamic compressive strength and peak strain of two rocks increase as the strain rate increases and the confi ning pressure effects are obvious.(3) Due to the effect of confi ning pressure, the normal stress on the damage surface of the rock increases correspondingly, the bearing capacity of the crack friction exceeds the material cohesion and the slippage of the fractured rock is controlled, which all lead to the compression and shear failure mode of rock. The theoretical analysis and experimental methods to study the dynamic failure mode and other related characteristics of rock are useful in developing standards for engineering practice.展开更多

It is possible to predict the structural safety of the aluminum foam for an impact if the impact behavior of aluminum foam performed in this work is utilized.

文摘Cemented tailings backfill(CTB)structures are important components of underground mine stopes. It is important to investigate the characteristics and dynamic behavior of CTB materials because they are susceptible to disturbance by dynamic loading, such as excavation and blasting. In this study, the authors present the results of a series of Split-Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB)single and cyclic impact loading tests on CTB specimens to investigate the long-term dynamic mechanical properties of CTB.The stress-strain relationship, dynamic strength, and dynamic failure characteristics of CTB specimens are analyzed and discussed to provide valuable conclusions that will improve our knowledge of CTB long-term mechanical behavior and characteristics. For instance, the dynamic peak stress under cyclic impact loading is approximately twice that under single impact loading, and the CTB specimens are less prone to fracture when cyclically loaded. These findings and conclusions can provide a new set of references for the stability analysis of CTB materials and help guide mine designers in reducing the amount of binding agents and the associated mining cost.

文摘Orthotropic membrane components and structures are widely used in building structures, instruments and meters, electronic engineering, space and aeronautics, etc., because of their light weights. The results obtained herein provide some theoretical basis for the vibration control and dynamic design of orthotropic membrane components and structures.
文摘The transient response of an unlimited cylindrical cavity buried in the infinite elastic soil subjected to an anti-plane impact load along the cavern axis direction was studied.Using Laplace transform combining with contour integral of the Laplace inverse transform specifically, the general analytical expressions of the soil displacement and stress are obtained in the time domain, respectively. And the numerical solutions of the problem computed by analytical expressions are presented. In the time domain, the dynamic responses of the infinite elastic soil are analyzed, and the calculation results are compared with those from numerical inversion proposed by Durbin and the static results. One observes good agreement between analytical and numerical inversion results, lending the further support to the method presented. Finally, some valuable shear wave propagation laws are gained: the displacement of the soil remains zero before the wave arrival, and after the shear wave arrival, the stress and the displacement at this point increase abruptly, then reduce and tend to the static value gradually at last. The wave attenuates along the radial, therefore the farther the wave is from the source, the smaller the stress and the displacement are,and the stress and the displacement are just functions of the radial distance from the axis.

文摘We studied the dynamic fracture mechanical behavior of rock under different impact rates. The results provide a theoretical basis for the study of rock dynamic fracture.

文摘Progressive collapse of building structures under blast and impact loads has attracted great attention all over the world. Our recent proposed new method for progressive collapse analysis of reinforced concrete frames under blast loads is also introduced.

文摘Loads generated after an air crash, ship collision, and other accidents may destroy very large floating structures (VLFSs) and create additional connector loads. The oscillation load is observed in the connector in the Y direction at a wave direction of 75° and not at 0° This paper presents a time domain calculation method of connector load to provide a certain reference function for the future development of Chinese VLFS

文摘Crack dynamic propagation and arrest behaviors have received extensive attention over the years. However, there still remain many questions,e.g.under what conditions will a running crack come to arrest? In this paper, drop weight impact(DWI)tests were conducted to investigate crack arrest mechanism using single cleavage triangle(SCT)rock specimens.Green sandstone was selected to prepare the SCT specimens.Dynamic stress intensity factors(DSIFs)were calculated by ABAQUS code, and the critical DSIFs were determined by crack propagation speeds and fracture time measured by crack propagation gauges(CPGs).The test results show that the critical DSIF at propagation decreases with crack propagation speed.Numerical simulation for SCT specimens under different loading waves was performed using AUTODYN code. The reflected compressive wave from the incident and transmitted plates can induce crack arrests during propagation, and the number of arrest times increases with the wave length. In order to eliminate the effect of the incident and transmitted plates, models consisting of only one SCT specimen without incident and transmitted plates were established, and the same trapezoid-shaped loading wave was applied to the SCT specimen. The results show that for the SCT specimen with transmitted boundary(analogous to an infinite plate),the trapezoid-shaped loading wave cannot induce crack arrest anymore. The numerical results can well describe the occurrence of crack arrest in the experiments.

文摘No failure, moderate failure, severe failure, and slight failure are the four failure modes generalized observed in the dynamic response of the single-layer reticulated dome under vertical impact load on apex. More-over, the distribution of failure modes is decided by EL F which leads to the maximum dynamic re-sponse of the reticulated dome, but not by the initial impact kinetic energy of impactor.

文摘Split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB)tests were conducted on pre-rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy at 150–350℃ with strain rates of 2150s-1,3430s^(-1) and 4160s-1.The mechanical response, microstructural evolution and accommodation mechanism of the pre-rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy under high-speed impact loading were investigated. The twin and shear band are prevailing at low temperature, and the coexistence of twins and recrystallized grains is the dominant microstructure at medium temperature, while at high temperature, dynamic recrystallization(DRX)is almost complete. The increment of temperature reduces the critical condition difference between twinning and DRX,and the recrystallized temperature decreases with increasing strain rate. The mechanical response is related to the competition among the shear band strengthen, the twin strengthen and the fine grain strengthen and determined by the prevailing grain structure. The fine grain strengthen could compensate soften caused by the temperature increase and the reduction of twin and shear band.During high-speed deformation, different twin variants, introduced by pre-rolling,induce different deformation mechanism to accommodate plastic deformation and are in favor for non-basal slip.At low temperature, the high-speed deformation is achieved by twinning, dislocation slip and the following deformation shear band at different deformation stages. At high temperature, the high-speed deformation is realized by twinning and dislocation slip of early deformation stage, transition shear band of medium deformation stage and DRX of final deformation stage.

文摘In order to investigate the dynamic mechanical properties of amphibolite and sericite-quartz schist under confi ning pressure, two rocks are subjected to impact loadings with different strain rates and confi ning pressures by using split Hopkinson pressure bar equipment with a confi ning pressure device. The theoretical analysis and experimental methods to study the dynamic failure mode and other related characteristics of rock are useful in developing standards for engineering practice.
