The paper proposes an Indoor Localization System(ILS)which uses only one fixed Base Station(BS)with simple non-reconfigurable antennas. The proposed algorithm measures Received Signal Strength(RSS)and maps it to the location in the room by estimating signal strength of a direct line of sight(LOS)signal and signal of the first order reflection from the wall. The algorithm is evaluated through both simulations and empirical measurements in a furnished open space office, sampling 21 different locations in the room.It is demonstrated the system can identify user’s real-time location with a maximum estimation error below 0.7 m for 80%confidence Cumulative Distribution Function(CDF)user level, demonstrating the ability to accurately estimate the receiver’s location within the room. The system is intended as a cost-efficient indoor localization technique, offering simplicity and easy integration with existing wireless communication systems.Unlike comparable single base station localization techniques, the proposed system does not require beam scanning, offering stable communication capacity while performing the localization process. 展开更多

The problem of linear parameter varying (LPV) system identification is considered based on the locally weighted technique which provides estimation of the LPV model parameters at each distinct data time point by giving large weights to measurements that are "close" to the current time point and small weights to measurements "far" from the current time point. Issues such as choice of distance function, weighting function and bandwidth selection are discussed. The developed method is easy to implement and simulation results illustrate its efficiency. 展开更多

Electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning electrochemical microscopy have been used for in situ monitoring of localized corrosion processes of different Duplex stainless steels (DSS) in acidic chloride solutions. The techniques allow imaging of local dissolution events with micrometer resolution, as opposed to conventional electrochemical techniques, which only give an overall view of the corrosion behavior. In addition, combined scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy and magnetic force microscopy were used for mapping the Volta potential variation over the surface of DSSs. A significant difference in Volta potential between the austenite and ferrite phases suggests galvanic interaction between the phases. A compositional gradient appears within 2 micrometers across the phase boundary, as seen with scanning Auger microscopy (SAM). In all, the studies suggest that higher alloyed DSS exhibit a more homogeneous dissolution behavior than lower alloyed DSS, due to higher and more similar corrosion resistance of the two phases, and enhanced resistance of the ferrite/austenite phase boundary regions. 展开更多

The concept of health monitoring is a key aspect of the field of medicine that has been practiced for a long time. A commonly used diagnostic and health monitoring practice is pulse diagnosis, which can be traced back approximately five thousand years in the recorded history of China. With advances in the development of modern technology, the concept of health monitoring of a variety of engineering structures in several applications has begun to attract widespread attention. Of particular interest in this study is the health monitoring of civil structures. It seem natural, and even beneficial, that these two health-monitoring methods, one as applies to the human body and the other to civil structures, should be analyzed and compared. In this paper, the basic concepts and theories of the two monitoring methods are first discussed. Similarities are then summarized and commented upon. It is hoped that this correlation analysis may help provide structural engineers with some insights into the intrinsic concept of using pulse diagnosis in human health monitoring, which may of be some benefit in the development of modern structural health monitoring methods. 展开更多

BACKGROUND A snapping wrist is a rare symptom that results from the sudden impingement of one anatomic structure against another, subsequently causing a sudden movement only during wrist movement.CASE SUMMARY A 30-year-old woman with a history of right wrist contusion reported right wrist snapping after overuse. The snapping became symptomatic after moving heavy objects. The pain persisted even when she received 1 mo of conservative treatment.Physical examination showed painful wrist snapping during wrist radioulnar motion and thumb abduction-adduction.Radiography demonstrated bone overgrowth over the radial styloid process.Sonography disclosed a tendon jumping over a bony prominence in the first compartment during wrist motion.Magnetic resonance imaging revealed no anomalous tendon nor tumorlike lesion.Under the wide-awake local anesthesia no tourniquet(WALANT)technique, the lesion was identified in the first extensor compartment. The patient received stepwise extensor retinaculum release, synovectomy, and bone spur removal.By 6th week, the patient was completely free of pain and unable to snap her wrist. She started working 7 wk after the surgery. One year after the surgery, the wrist snap was not recurrent.CONCLUSION Careful physical examination and dynamic sonography may confirm the diagnosis of a snapping wrist. With the WALANT technique, the lesion could be identified under direct vision, and we could take stepwise interventions according to intraoperative presentations. 展开更多
