In this paper, we studied the relationship between soil quality and soil microbial properties such as soil microbial biomass and soil enzyme activities in order to illustrate the function of soil microbial properties as bio-indicators of soil health. In this study, microbial biomass C and N contents (Cmic & Nmic), soil enzyme activities, and soil fertility with different fertilizer regimes were carried out based on a 15-year long-term fertilizer experiment in Drab Fluvo-aquic soil in Changping County, Beijing, China. At this site, 7 different treatments were established in 1991. They were in a wheat-maize rotation receiving either no fertilizer (CK), mineral fertilizers (NPK), mineral fertilizers with wheat straw incorporated (NPKW), mineral fertilizers with incremental wheat straw incorporated (NPKW+), mineral fertilizers plus swine manure (NPKM), mineral fertilizers plus incremental swine manure (NPKM+) or mineral fertilizers with maize straw incorporated (NPKS). In different fertilization treatments Cmic changed from 96.49 to 500.12 mg kg^-1, and Nmic changed from 35.89 to 101.82 mg kg^-1. Compared with CK, the other treatments increased Cmic & Nmic, Cmic/Corg (organic C) ratios, Cmic/Nmic, urease activity, soil organic matter (SOM), soil total nitrogen (STN), and soil total phosphorus (STP). All these properties in treatment with fertilizers input NPKM+ were the highest. Meantime, long-term combined application of mineral fertilizers with organic manure or crop straw could significantly decrease the soil pH in Fluvo-aquic soil (the pH around 8.00 in this experimental soil). Some of soil microbial properties (Cmic/Nmic, urease activity) were positively correlated with soil nutrients. Cmic/Nmic was significantly correlated with SOM and STN contents. The correlation between catalase activity and soil nutrients was not significant. In addition, except of catalase activity, the soil pH in this experiment was negatively correlated with soil microbial properties. In conclusion, soil microbial properties reflect changes of soil quality and thus can be used as bio-indicators of soil health.展开更多

The soil microorganisms play a crucial role in soil structure and functioning. They are responsible for soil formation, ecosystem biogeochemistry, cycling of nutrients and degradation of plant residues and xenobiotics. Certain agricultural treatments, such as fertilizers and pesticides applications, crop rotation, or soil amendment addition, influence the composition, abundance and function of bacteria and fungi in the soil ecosystems. Some of these practices have rather negative effects;others can help soil microorganisms by creating a friendlier habitat or providing nutrients. The changes in microbial community structure cannot be fully captured with traditional methods that are limited only to culturable organisms, which represent less than 1% of the whole population. The use of new molecular techniques such as metagenomics offers the possibility to better understand how agriculture affects soil microbiota. Therefore, the main goal of this review is to discuss how common farming practices influence microbial activity in the soil, with a special focus on pesticides, fertilizers, heavy metals and crop rotation. Furthermore, potential practices to mitigate the negative effects of some treatments are suggested and treatments that can beneficially influence soil microbiota are pointed out. Finally, application of metagenomics technique in agriculture and perspectives of developing efficient molecular tools in order to assess soil condition in the context of microbial activities are underlined.展开更多

The aim of this study was to investigate chronological change in MR-ADL among chronic dialysis patients in need of long-term care and the effect of admission to long-term care facilities on their MR-ADL. Methods: Data were analyzed from a long-term care eligibility assessment survey conducted in late March 2009 of 1000 individuals residing in Niigata City, Japan who were approved to receive long-term care. Then data from those individuals who had undergone the assessment survey ≥4 times over a period of ≥4 years were statistically evaluated. To reveal change in MR-ADL, this study performed a three-way analysis of variance with mean survey scores from assessment categories 2 - 5 containing questions related to MR-ADL as the independent variable and the number of eligibility assessment surveys (within-subjects factor), facility admission, and dialysis therapy (between-subjects factors) as dependent variables. Results: We observed the effect of facility admission in individuals aged >70 years for categories 2 - 5, and observed the effect of the number of assessment surveys taken only in women ≥80 years for categories 2 and 5. Regarding the effect of dialysis therapy, female dialysis patients aged ≥80 years and in need of long-term care scored significantly higher on survey items for transferring, grooming, toileting, eating, and instrumental activities of daily living, all of which are indicators of a moderate decline in ADL. Conclusions: Because dialysis is often initiated in women aged around 80 years, ADL in this group of individuals can be improved by the initiation and proper provision of dialysis.展开更多

Methods: The study used a descriptive cross-sectional design. A total of 146 nurses working in 6 long-term care facilities in South Korea self-reported their perception of EBP implementation, barriers to research utilization, and job satisfaction. Results: The level of job satisfaction was higher in nurses who were single, older, more experienced, and had a higher income. Lower perceived barriers to research utilization were associated with greater job satisfaction. However, there was no significant relationship between a level of EBP implementation and job satisfaction. Factors influencing job satisfaction included lower barriers to the organization and communication domains of research utilization, being unmarried and older. Conclusion: Decreasing barriers to research utilization may improve the job satisfaction of nurses working in long-term care facilities.展开更多

LW consists of 6herbs including Dihuang[prepared root of Rehmannia glutinosa(Gaertn) DC], Shanyao(rhizome of Dioscorea polystachya Turcz), Shanzhuyu(fruit of Cornus officinalis Siebold Zucc), Mudanpi(root bark of Paeonia × suffruticosa Andrews),Zexie(rhizome of Alisma plantago-aquatica L) and Fuling(scleorotia of Wolfiporia extensa(Peck) Ginns)LW-active fraction combination(LW-AFC) is extracted from LW, it is effective for the treatment of kidney yin deficiency in many animal models. There are 3 fractions in LW-AFC, a polysaccharide fraction(LWB-B), a glycoside fraction(LWD-b) and an oligosaccharide fraction(CA-30). Our previous results indicate that LW-AFC has similar pharmacological effects to LW, modulating the balance of the NIM network. LW-AFC has positive effects in many animal models of kidney deficiency or disturbance of the NIM network. LW-AFC could improve the cognitive ability in Alzheimer′s disease(AD) animal models(APP/PS1, SAMP8), where modulating immune function and balancing the NIM network may play an important role in its cognition improving effects. Our study also showed that LW-AFC had protective effects on stress-induced disturbances of the NIM network. However, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive and need further investigation. OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the effects of LW-AFC and the active fractions(polysaccharide, LWB-B;glycoside, LWD-b;oligosaccharide,CA-30) on corticosterone(Cort)-induced long-term potentiation(LTP) impairment in vivo. METHODS LTP was used to evaluate the synaptic plasticity. LW-AFC was orally administered for seven days. The active fractions were given by either chronic administration(ig, ip, 7 d) or single administration(icv, ig, ip). Cort was injected subcutaneously 1 h before the high-frequency stimulation(HFS) to induce LTP impairment. Moreover, in order to research on the possible effective pathways, an antibiotic cocktail and an immunosuppressant were also used. RESULTS Chronic administration(ig) of LW-AFC and its three active fractions could ameliorate Cort-induced LTP impairment. Single administration(icv, ig, ip) of any of the active fractions had no effect on Cort-induced LTP impairment, while chronic administration(ig, ip) of LWB-B or LWD-b showed positive effects against Cort. Interestingly, CA-30 only showed protective effects via ig administration, and there was little effect when CA-30 was administered ip In addition, when the intestinal microbiota was disrupted by application of the antibiotic cocktail, CA-30 showed little protective effects against Cort. The effects of LW-AFC were also abolished when the immune function was inhibited. In the hippocampal tissue, Cort treatment increased corticosterone and glutamate, and LW-AFC could inhibit the Cort-induced elevation of corticosterone and glutamate;there was little change in D-serine in Cort-treated animals, but LW-AFC could increase the D-serine levels. CONCLUSION LW-AFC and its three active fractions could ameliorate Cort-induced LTP impairment. Their protective effects are unlikely by a direct way, and immune modulation might be the common pathway. CA-30 could protect LTP from impairment via modulating the intestinal microbiota. Decreasing corticosterone and glutamate and increasing D-serine in the Cort-treated animals’ hippocampal tissue might be one of the mechanisms for the neural protective effects of LW-AFC. Further study is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms.展开更多

This method is based on four years' worth of data collected in Beijing. Observation data of Rs and Qp from 2005-2008 are used to investigate the temporal variability of Qp and its dependence on the clearness index and solar zenith angle. A simple and effcient all-weather empirically derived reconstruction model is proposed to reconstruct Qp from Rs. This reconstruction method is found to estimate instantaneous Qp with high accuracy. The annual mean of the daily values of Qp during the period 1958-2005 period is 25.06 mol m-2 d-1. The magnitude of the long-term trend for the annual averaged Qp is presented (-0.19 mol m-2 yr-1 from 1958-1997 and -0.12 mol m-2 yr-1 from 1958-2005). The trend in Qp exhibits sharp decreases in the spring and summer and more gentle decreases in the autumn and winter.展开更多

This study aimed to evaluate the quality of healthcare services in Japan’s long-term care facilities and identify the structural and process indicators associated with the facilities’ outcome indicators. Methods: This retrospective study assessed changes in residents’ abilities to participate in physical activities, their cognitive function, and their vulnerability to injuries. From 2012 to 2013, we collected information on the healthcare services at 1067 long-term care facilities registered with Japan’s Welfare, Health and Medical Care Information Network in the Welfare and Medical Service Agency. We examined 12 structural indicators, 26 process indicators, and 7 outcome indicators. We used multivariate linear regression models adjusted to analyze relationships between outcome indicators and structural or process indicators. Results: Residents’ activity and cognitive function indicators either improved by 80% - 90% or were maintained for one year. The Geriatric Functional Independence Measures, the Barthel Index, and holding conferences related to care were all considered activities of daily living. Three adverse events—tumbles and falls, behavioral problems, and aimless wandering or leaving the facility without permission—were factors that restricted residents’ behavior and number of residents per care staff member. Conclusions: Maintaining or improving levels of independence and cognition in daily living requires a care process system that enables ongoing monitoring of residents’ activities of daily living and cognitive functioning. Ensuring the safety of residents and improving the quality of care in long-term care facilities without securing adequate care staff are not possible.展开更多

Nowadays, Communicative Language Teaching(CLT) has become a very popular teaching approach in China. CLT pays a lot attention to the social and functional elements in language daily use.
文摘For a constantly growing human population, healthy and productive soil is critical for sustainable delivery of agricultural products. Finally, application of metagenomics technique in agriculture and perspectives of developing efficient molecular tools in order to assess soil condition in the context of microbial activities are underlined.
文摘Background: In the near future in Japan, chronic dialysis patients will likely face a situation where the aging and the lengthening of hemodialysis treatment periods will adversely affect the mobility-related activities of daily living (MR-ADL). Conclusions: Because dialysis is often initiated in women aged around 80 years, ADL in this group of individuals can be improved by the initiation and proper provision of dialysis.
文摘Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between evidence-based practice (EBP) and job satisfaction among nurses working in long-term care facilities. Conclusion: Decreasing barriers to research utilization may improve the job satisfaction of nurses working in long-term care facilities.

文摘Liuwei Dihuang decoction(LW), a classic formula in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), has been used for nearly one thousand years for various diseases with characteristic features of kidney yin deficiency. Further study is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms.

文摘To investigate the effects of long-term fertilization systems on soil microbial community structure, labile organic carbon and nitrogen and enzyme activity in yellow sand paddy field and upland,a field experiment was conducted at the experimental station of Dongyang Institute of Maize Research in Zhejiang Province,China in 2009.The experiment consisted of six treatments with three replicates, and they were arranged in a completely randomized design, including no fertilization in paddy field (PCK),conventional fertilization in paddy field (PCF),formulated fertilization by soil testing in paddy field (PSTF),formulated fertilization by soil testing with organic manure in paddy field (PSTF+OF),conventional fertilization on upland (DCF),and formulated fertilization by soil testing with organic manure on upland (DSTF+OF).Soil nutrients, enzyme activity, microbial biomass and community structure were determined in 2015.The results showed that compared with no fertilization in paddy field (PCK),fertilization increased soil phosphorus and potassium content, and decreased pH value. No fertilization in paddy field (PCK) had no significant effect on soil culturable microorganisms in paddy field and upland, but formulated fertilization by soil testing with organic manure on upland (DSTF+OF) significantly increased the number of fungi.Formula fertilization by soil testing with organic manure (PSTF+OF) also significantly increased soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen in paddy field and upland. Moreover, fertilization had no significant effect on soil cellulase activity, but formula fertilization by soil testing with organic manure (PSTF+OF) significantly increased soil dehydrogenase and catalase activity.Therefore,long-term application of chemical fertilizer with organic fertilizer can effectively improve soil fertility.

文摘Prolonged activation of adenosine A1 receptor likely leads to damage of dopaminergic neurons and subsequent development of neurodegenerative diseases. However, the pathogenesis underlying long-term adenosine A1 receptor activation-induced neurodegeneration remains unclear. In this study, rats were intraperitoneally injected with 5 mg/kg of the adenosine A1 receptor agonist N6-cyclopentyladenosine(CPA)for five weeks. The mobility of rats was evaluated by forced swimming test, while their cognitive capabilities were evaluated by Y-maze test.Expression of sortilin,α-synuclein,p-JUN,and c-JUN proteins in the substantia nigra were detected by western blot analysis. In addition, immunofluorescence staining of sortilin andα-synuclein was performed to detect expression in the substantia nigra. The results showed that, compared with adenosine A1 receptor antagonist 8-cyclopentyl-1,3-dipropylxanthine(5 mg/kg)+CPA co-treated rats, motor and memory abilities were reduced, surface expression of sortin andα-synuclein in dopaminergic neurons was reduced, and total sortilin and totalα-synuclein were increased in CPA-treated rats.MN9D cells were incubated with 500 nM CPA alone or in combination with 10μM SP600125(JNK inhibitor)for 48 hours.Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis of sortilin andα-synuclein mRNA levels in MN9D cells revealed upregulated sortilin expression in MN9D cells cultured with CPA alone, but the combination of CPA and SP600125 could inhibit this expression.Predictions made using Jasper,PROMO,and Alibaba online databases identified a highly conserved sequence in the sortilin promoter that was predicted to bind JUN in both humans and rodents.A luciferase reporter assay of sortilin promoter plasmid-transfected HEK293T cells confirmed this prediction. After sortilin expression was inhibited by sh-SORT1,expression of p-JUN and c-JUN was detected by western blot analysis.Long-term adenosine A1 receptor activation levels upregulatedα-synuclein expression at the post-transcriptional level by affecting sortilin expression. The online tool Raptor-X-Binding and Discovery Studio 4.5 prediction software predicted that sortilin can bind toα-synuclein.Co-immunoprecipitation revealed an interaction between sortilin andα-synuclein in MN9D cells. Our findings indicate that suppression of prolonged adenosine A1 receptor activation potently inhibited sortilin expression andα-synuclein accumulation, and dramatically improved host cognition and kineticism. This study was approved by the University Committee of Animal Care and Supply at the University of Saskatchewan(approval No.AUP#20070090)in March 2007 and the Animals Ethics Committee of University of South China(approval No.LL0387-USC)in June 2017.

文摘A long-term dataset of photosynthetically active radiation (Qp) is reconstructed from a broadband global solar radiation (Rs) dataset through an all-weather reconstruction model. The trend in Qp exhibits sharp decreases in the spring and summer and more gentle decreases in the autumn and winter.
文摘Objective: Currently, standards for evaluating long-term care facilities do not exist in Japan. Ensuring the safety of residents and improving the quality of care in long-term care facilities without securing adequate care staff are not possible.
文摘OBJECTIVE LW-AFC is extracted from the classical traditional Chinese medicinal prescription-Liuwei Dihuang Decoction.Previous studies have showed that LW-AFC could improve learning&memory ability in amny animal models. In this study,we focused on evaluating the effect of several main active components fromLW-AFC(B-B;loganin,LOG;morroniside,MOR;paeoniflorin,PF and stachyose,STA)on LTP.METHODS In vivo recording of LTP was used in this study to evaluate the effects of LW-AFC and it′s active components on coticorsterone(Cort)induced LTP impairment.RESULTS The results showed that LW-AFC could ameliorate Cort-induced LTP impairment. The effect of LW-AFC was abolished when the immune function was inhibited.Single administration(ig,ip,icv)of any of the components had no effect on Cort-induced LTP impairment.Consecutively intragastric administration or intraperitoneal injections(chronic administration)of B-B,LOG,MOR or PF for 7 d showed protective effect on Cort-induced LTP impairment.Intragastric administration of STA for 7 d protected LTP from impairment induced by Cort, while there was little improving effect when STA was administrated via intraperitoneal injection. In addition, when the intestinal microbiota was disrupted by applying the antibiotic cocktail,STA showed little protective effect against Cort.CONCLUSION In conclusion,LW-AFC and it′s components showed positive effects against cort induced LTP impairment,it seems that all displayed protective effects via indirectly, immune modulation might be the common pathway for all components;the exact pathways are different in each component,B-B,LOG,MOR and PF could be absorbed into the bloods tream and then modulate the peripheral immune function, while STA could not be absorbed and modulates the immune function via modulating intestinal microbiota.Further studies are needed to invesgate the underlying mechanisms and the synergetic effects of all components.
