Corrosion-resistant and biocompatible films were fabricated on AZ91D Mg alloy substrates by varying their roughness levels using met-allographic preparation and subsequent hydrothermal procedures.The coated films comprised a mixed structure of Mg(OH)_(2)and Mg-Al layered double hydroxides(LDH)and exhibited excellent compactness.Coating film thickness increased with decreasing surface roughness.Corrosion resistance was evaluated using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.Metallographic pretreat-ment influenced the chemical activity of the Mg alloy surface and helped modulate the dissolution rate of the Mg_(17)Al_(12)phase during the hydrothermal procedure.With decreasing roughness of the Mg substrate,the Al^(3+)concentration gradually increased,accelerating the in-situ formation of the Mg(OH)_(2)/LDH composite coating and improving its crystallinity.A thick and dense Mg(OH)_(2)/LDH coating was synthesized on the Mg substrate with the least roughness,substantially improving the corrosion resistance of the AZ91D alloy.The lowest corrosion current density((5.73±2.75)×10^(−8)A·cm^(−2))was achieved,which was approximately three orders of magnitude less than that of bare AZ91D.Moreover,the coating demonstrated biocompatibility with no evident cytotoxicity,cellular damage,and hemolytic phenomena.This study provides an effective method for preparing coatings on Mg alloy surfaces with excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. 展开更多

Shearing dislocation is a common failure type for rock–backfill interfaces because of backfill sedimentation and rock strata movement in backfill mining goaf.This paper designed a test method for rock–backfill shearing dislocation.Using digital image techno-logy and three-dimensional(3D)laser morphology scanning techniques,a set of 3D models with rough joint surfaces was established.Further,the mechanical behavior of rock–backfill shearing dislocation was investigated using a direct shear test.The effects of interface roughness on the shear–displacement curve and failure characteristics of rock–backfill specimens were considered.The 3D fractal dimen-sion,profile line joint roughness coefficient(JRC),profile line two-dimensional fractal dimension,and the surface curvature of the frac-tures were obtained.The correlation characterization of surface roughness was then analyzed,and the shear strength could be measured and calculated using JRC.The results showed the following:there were three failure threshold value points in rock–backfill shearing dis-location:30%–50%displacement before the peak,70%–90%displacement before the peak,and 100%displacement before the peak to post-peak,which could be a sign for rock–backfill shearing dislocation failure.The surface JRC could be used to judge the rock–backfill shearing dislocation failure,including post-peak sliding,uniform variations,and gradient change,corresponding to rock–backfill disloca-tion failure on the field site.The research reveals the damage mechanism for rock–backfill complexes based on the free joint surface,fills the gap of existing shearing theoretical systems for isomerism complexes,and provides a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of possible disasters in backfill mining. 展开更多

The focus of this research was on the equivalent particle roughness height correction required to account for the presence of ice when determining the performances of wind turbines.In particular,two icing processes(frost ice and clear ice)were examined by combining the FENSAP-ICE and FLUENT analysis tools.The ice type on the blade surfaces was predicted by using a multi-time step method.Accordingly,the influence of variations in icing shape and ice surface roughness on the aerodynamic performance of blades during frost ice formation or clear ice formation was investigated.The results indicate that differences in blade surface roughness and heat flux lead to disparities in both ice formation rate and shape between frost ice and clear ice.Clear ice has a greater impact on aerodynamics compared to frost ice,while frost ice is significantly influenced by the roughness of its icy surface. 展开更多

Textured surfaces with certain micro/nano structures have been proven to possess some advanced functions,such as reducing friction,improving wear and increasing wettability.Accurate prediction of micro/nano surface textures is of great significance for the design,fabrication and application of functional textured surfaces.In this paper,based on the kinematic analysis of cutter teeth,the discretization of ultrasonic machining process,transformation method of coordinate systems and the cubic spline data interpolation,an integrated theoretical model was established to characterize the distribution and geometric features of micro textures on the surfaces machined by different types of ultrasonic vibration-assisted milling(UVAM).Based on the theoretical model,the effect of key process parameters(vibration directions,vibration dimensions,cutting parameters and vibration parameters)on tool trajectories and microtextured surface morphology in UVAM is investigated.Besides,the effect of phase difference on the elliptical shape in 2D/3D ultrasonic elliptical vibration-assisted milling(UEVAM)was analyzed.Compared to conventional numerical models,the method of the cubic spline data interpolation is applied to the simulation of microtextured surface morphology in UVAM,which is more suitable for characterizing the morphological features of microtextured surfaces than traditional methods due to the presence of numerous micro textures.The prediction of surface roughness indicates that the magnitude of ultrasonic amplitude in z-direction should be strictly limited in 1D rotary UVAM,2D and 3D UEVAM due to the unfavorable effect of axial ultrasonic vibration on the surface quality.This study can provide theoretical guidance for the design and fabrication of microtextured surfaces in UVAM. 展开更多

Purpose–This study aims to investigate the acoustic roughness of rails on China’s high-speed railways,with a focus on short-wavelength irregularities(less than 80 cm),which are known to significantly contribute to noise.The goal is to develop a specific acoustic roughness spectrum tailored for China’s high-speed railway system,as no such spectrum currently exists.Design/methodology/approach–A long-term tracking study was conducted on major railway lines in China,monitoring rail roughness throughout the initial operational period and the rails’service life.Data preprocessing techniques such as peak removal and curvature correction were applied for acoustic adjustments.A spatial-wavelength domain transformation was performed,providing the distribution patterns and statistical characteristics of acoustic roughness on China’s high-speed rails.Based on these analyses,a model for constructing the acoustic roughness spectrum was developed.Findings–The study found that the acoustic roughness of China’s high-speed railway rails follows aχ2 distribution with six degrees of freedom.For wavelengths greater than 8 cm,the acoustic roughness spectrum remains below the ISO specified limits.In the wavelength range of 3.2 cm to 6.3 cm,the roughness is comparable to or within the limits specified by ISO 3095:2005 and ISO 3095:2013.However,for wavelengths shorter than 2.5 cm,the roughness exceeds ISO limits.Originality/value–This research fills the gap in the lack of a specific acoustic roughness spectrum for China’s high-speed railways.By establishing a tailored spectrum based on long-term data analysis,the findings provide valuable insights for noise control and rail maintenance in the context of China’s high-speed rail system. 展开更多

In order to understand the mechanical properties and the fracture surface roughness characteristics of thermally damaged granite under dynamic splitting,dynamic Brazilian splitting tests were conducted on granite samples after thermal treatment at 25,200,400,and 600℃.Results show that the dynamic peak splitting strength of thermally damaged granite samples increases with increasing strain rate,showing obvious strain‐rate sensitivity.With increasing temperature,thermally induced cracks in granite transform from intergranular cracks to intragranular cracks,and to a transgranular crack network.Thermally induced damages reduce the dynamic peak splitting strength and the maximum absorbed energy while increasing the peak radial strain.The fracture mode of the thermally damaged granite under dynamic loads is mode Ⅱ splitting failure.By using the axial roughness index Z2 a,the distribution ranges of the wedge‐shaped failure zones and the tensile failure zones in the fracture surfaces under dynamic Brazilian splitting can be effectively identified.The radial roughness index Z_(2)^(r)is sensitive to the strain rate and temperature.It shows a linear correlation with the peak splitting strength and the maximum absorbed energy and a linear negative correlation with the peak radial strain.Z_(2)^(r)can be used to quantitatively estimate the dynamic parameters based on the models proposed. 展开更多

Boulder spacing in mountain rivers and near-wake flow zones within the boulder array is very useful for fish habitat and growth of aquatic organisms.The present study aims to investigate how the boulder array and spacing influence the near-bed flow structures in a gravel-bed stream.Boulders are staggered over a gravel-bed stream with three different inter-boulder spacing namely(a)large(b)medium and(c)small spacing.An acoustic Doppler velocimeter was used for flow measurements in a rectangular channel and the results were compared with those acquired from numerical simulation.The time-averaged velocity profiles at the near-wake flow zones of boulders experience maximum flow retardation which is an outcome of the boulder-induced form roughness.The ratio of velocity differences associated to form and skin roughness and its positive magnitude reveals the dominance of form roughness closest to the boulders.Form roughness computed is 1.75 to 2 times higher than the skin roughness at the near-wake flow region.In particular,the collective immobile boulders placed at different inter-boulder spacings developed high and low bed shear stresses closest to the boulders.The low bed shear stresses characterised by a secondary peak developed at the trough location of the boulders is attributed to the skin shear stress.Further,the spatial averaging of time-averaged flow quantities gives additional impetus to present an improved illustration of fluid shear stresses.The formation of form-induced shear stress is estimated to be 17%to 23%of doubleaveraged Reynolds shear stress and partially compensates for the damping of time-averaged Reynolds shear stress in the interfacial sub-layer.The quadrant analysis of spatial velocity fluctuations depicts that the form-induced shear stresses are dominant in the interfacial sub-layer and have no significance above the gravel-bed surface. 展开更多

An ensemble learning method to retrieve sea ice roughness from Sentinel-1 SAR images

Sea ice surface roughness(SIR)affects the energy transfer between the atmosphere and the ocean,and it is also an important indicator for sea ice characteristics.To obtain a small-scale SIR with high spatial resolution,a novel method is proposed to retrieve SIR from Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar(SAR)images,utilizing an ensemble learning method.Firstly,the two-dimensional continuous wavelet transform is applied to obtain the spatial information of sea ice,including the scale and direction of ice patterns.Secondly,a model is developed using the Adaboost Regression model to establish a relationship among SIR,radar backscatter and the spatial information of sea ice.The proposed method is validated by using the SIR retrieved from SAR images and comparing it to the measurements obtained by the Airborne Topographic Mapper(ATM)in the summer Beaufort Sea.The determination of coefficient,mean absolute error,root-mean-square error and mean absolute percentage error of the testing data are 0.91,1.71 cm,2.82 cm,and 36.37%,respectively,which are reasonable.Moreover,K-fold cross-validation and learning curves are analyzed,which also demonstrate the method’s applicability in retrieving SIR from SAR images. 展开更多

Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5 bulk metallic glass (BMG) rods were abraded to different surface roughnesses using different types of waterproof abrasive papers and sometimes polishing pastes, and the compressive deformation behavior was examined. The results show that the yield strength of the BMG is hardly affected while the compressive plasticity increases from 2.3% to 4.5% with decreasing the surface roughness. Observation of the fractured samples under a scanning electron microscope indicates that the rise in plasticity is accompanied with an increase in shear band density. The results suggest that it is necessary to reduce the surface roughness of BMGs for achieving a large plasticity. 展开更多

Ti/TiN/Zr/ZrN multilayer coatings were deposited on Cr_17Ni_2 steel substrates with different surface roughnesses by vacuum cathodic arc deposition method. Microstructure, micro-hardness, adhesion strength and cross-sectional morphology of the obtained multilayer coatings were investigated. The results show that the Vickers hardness of Ti/TiN/Zr/ZrN multilayer coating, with a film thickness of 11.37 μm, is 29.36 GPa. The erosion and salt spray resistance performance of Cr_17Ni_2 steel substrates can be evidently improved by Ti/TiN/Zr/ZrN multilayer coating. The surface roughness of Cr_17Ni_2 steel substrates plays an important role in determining the mechanical and erosion performances of Ti/TiN/Zr/ZrN multilayer coatings. Overall, a low value of the surface roughness of substrates corresponds to an improved performance of erosion and salt spray resistance of multilayer coatings. The optimized performance of Ti/TiN/Zr/ZrN multilayer coatings can be achieved provided that the surface roughness of Cr_17Ni_2 steel substrates is lower than 0.4μm. 展开更多

The surface roughness of IF sheet steel is proportional to effective strain, grain size and inversely proportional to sheet thickness; the larger grain reduces the formability by accelerating the surface roughening rate and enhance formability by raising the workhardening rate, while the latter effect plays the dominate role. In order to describe pavement roughness more intuitively and effectively, a method of pavement roughness simulation, i.e., the stochastic sinusoidal wave, is introduced. The method is based on the primary idea that pavement roughness is denoted as the sum of numerous sines or cosines with stochastic phases, and uses the discrete spectrum to approach the target stochastic process. It is a discrete numerical method used to simulate pavement roughness. According to a given pavement power spectral density (PSD) coefficient, under the condition that the character of displacement frequency based on the time domain model is in accordance with the given pavement surface spectrum, the pavement roughness is optimized to stochastic equivalent vibrations by computer simulation, and the curves that describe pavement roughness under each grade are obtained. The results show that the stochastic sinusoidal wave is suitable for simulation of measured pavement surface spectra based on the time domain model. The method of the stochastic sinusoidal wave is important to the research on vehicle ride comfort due to its rigorous mathematical derivation, extensive application range and intuitive simulation curve. Finally, a roughness index defined as the nominal roughness index (NRI) is introduced, and it has correlation with the PSD coefficient. 展开更多

The evolution of 3-D disturbance T-S wave is studied in the spatial processes, and the effects of form and distribution structure of local roughness on the growth rate of the 3-D disturbance wave and the flow stability are discussed. Numerical results show that the growth of the disturbance wave and the form of vortices are accelerated by the 3-D local roughness. The modification of basic flow owing to the evolvement of the finite amplitude disturbance wave and the existence of spanwise velocity induced by the 3-D local roughness affects the stability of boundary layer. Propagation direction and phase of the disturbance wave shift obviously for the 3-D local roughness of the wall. The flow stability characteristics change if the form of the 2-D local roughness varies. 展开更多

The result shows that with the increase of road surface roughness, the tyre adhesion ability declines, and the automotive braking distance increases. Moreover, the reliability of the nonlinear time varying tyre model in reflecting the influence of the road surface roughness is validated. The sea surface roughnessn in the North-west Pacific Ocean is derived successfully using wind speed data estimated by the TOPEX satellite altimeter. From the results we find that: (1) the mean sea surface roughness in winter is greater than in summer; (2) compared with other sea areas, the sea surface roughness in the sea area east of Japan ( N30°- 40°, E135°- 150°) is larger than in other sea areas; (3) sea surface roughness in the South China Sea changes more greatly than that in the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea and East China Sea. 展开更多

The simulation process of grinding wheels and ground surface roughness is discussed, and the computation program system of numerical simulation is compiled with Visual C++ programming language. The choice of grinding wheels, the forecast of ground surface quality and some simulation results can be realized by interactively inputting grinding parameters. The paper applies virtual reality technology to grinding process,makes the model of virtual grinding wheel and simulates the grinding process. The roughness of ground surface is showed in three-dimensional images, and therefore the grinding technology is studied. Computer simulation can not only be used as a shortcut to analyze and research the grinding process, but also increase the research scope and content. The virtual reality technology used in the paper is an advanced visualized simulation with interaction. The surface roughness Ra on simulated ground workpiece can be calculated by the arithmetic average of contour warp absolute value in sampling length of simulated ground workpiece. The parameters of virtual wheel and simulated grinding process can be changed by interaction input, so the simulated results in the desired grinding condition are gained. The effect of each parameter to ground surface can be analyzed by comparing the grinding results in different condition. 展开更多

As an important parameter in the soil erosion model, soil surface roughness(SSR) is used to quantitatively describe the micro-relief on agricultural land. SSR has been extensively studied both experimentally and theoretically; however, no studies have focused on understanding SSR on the Loess Plateau of China. This study investigated changes in SSR for three different tillage practices on the Loess Plateau of China and the effects of SSR on runoff and erosion yield during simulated rainfall. The tillage practices used were zero tillage(ZT), shallow hoeing(SH) and contour ploughing(CP). Two rainfall intensities were applied, and three stages of water erosion processes(splash erosion(I), sheet erosion(II) and rill erosion(III)) were analyzed for each rainfall intensity. The chain method was used to measure changes in SSR both initially and after each stage of rainfall. A splash board was used to measure the splash erosion at stage I. Runoff and sediment data were collected continuously at 2-min intervals during rainfall erosion stages II and III. We found that SSR of the tilled surfaces ranged from 1.0% to 21.9% under the three tillage practices, and the order of the initial SSR for the three treatments was ZT〈SH〈CP. For the ZT treatment, SSR increased slightly from stage I to III, whereas for the SH and CP treatments, SSR decreased by 44.5% and 61.5% after the three water erosion stages, respectively, and the greatest reduction in SSR occurred in stage I. Regression analysis showed that the changes in SSR with increasing cumulative rainfall could be described by a power function(R2〉0.49) for the ZT, SH and CP treatments. The runoff initiation time was longer in the SH and CP treatments than in the ZT treatment. There were no significant differences in the total runoff yields among the ZT, SH and CP treatments. Surface roughness and shape play an important role on the behavior of particles in various processes such as flotation. In this re- search, the influence of different grinding methods on the surface roughness and shape characteristics of quartz particles as well as the effect of these parameters on the flotation of the particles was investigated. The surface roughness of the particles was determined by measuring their specific surface area via the gas adsorption method. The shape characteristics of the particles were measured and calculated by images obtained by scanning electron microscopy via an image analysis system. The flotation kinetics was determined using a laboratory flotation cell. The results showed that the particles of rod mill products have higher roughness and elongation ratio and lower roundness than the parti- cles of ball mill products. The flotation kinetics constant of the particles increased with their surface roughness increasing. Particles with higher elongation and lower roundness indicated higher floatability. In addition, the influence of the surface roughness on the flotation kinet- ics was greater than that of shape parameters. 展开更多

Aerodynamic roughness length (Z0m) is a key factor in surface flux estimations with remote sensing algorithms and/or land surface models. This paper calculates ZOrn over several land surfaces, with 3 years of experimental data from Xiaotangshan. The results show that Z0m is direction-dependent, mainly due to the heterogeneity of the size and spatial distribution of the roughness elements inside the source area along different wind directions. Furthermore, a heuristic parameterization of the aerodynamic roughness length for heterogeneous surfaces is proposed. Individual Z0m over each surface component (patch) is calculated firstly with the characteristic parameters of the roughness elements (vegetation height, leaf area index, etc.), then Z0m over the whole experimental field is aggregated, using the footprint weighting method. 展开更多
