The cyclic strain rates were chosen as 1.0 x 10(-2), 1.33 x 10(-3) and 0.33 x 10(-3) s(-1). The octahedral slip systems were confirmed to be activated on all the specimens. The experimental result shows that the fatigue behavior depends an the crystallographic orientation and cyclic strain rate. Except [0 0 1] orientation specimens, it is found from the scanning electron microscopy(SEM) examination that there are typical fatigue striations on the fracture surfaces. These fatigue striations are made up of cracks. The width of the fatigue striations depends on the crystallographic orientation and varies with the total strain range. A simple linear relationship exists between the width and total shear strain range modified by an orientation and strain rate parameter. The nonconformity to the Schmid law of tensile/compressive flaw stress and plastic behavior existed at 95 degrees C, and an orientation and strain rate modified Lall-Chin-Pope ( LCP) model was derived for the nonconformity. The influence of crysrallographic orientation and cyclic strain rate on the LCF behavior can be predicted satisfactorily by the model. In terms of an orientation and strain rate modified total strain range, a model for fatigue life was proposed and used successfully to correlate the fatigue lives studied.展开更多

Several problems, such as the relations of the cycle times to the depth and tip radius of the notch, loading frequency, loading range and the parameters of fracture design for medium carbon steel on condition of extra-low axial fatigue loading were discussed based on the experiments. Experimental results indicated that the tension-pressure fatigue loading mode was suitable for extra-low cyclic fatigue fracture design of medium carbon steel and it resulted in low energy consumption, fracture surface with high quality, low cycle times, and high efficiency. The appropriate parameters were as follows: loading frequency 3-5 Hz, notch tip radius r = (0.2-0.3) mm, opening angle α = 60°, and notch depth t = (0.14-0.17)D.展开更多

Experimental parameters included axial compression ratio, loading sequences, and strength of concrete and steel. The seismic performance of CFT columns and failure modes were analyzed. The test results show that different axial load ratios and loading sequences have effects on the load carrying capacity, ductility and energy dissipation capacity of CFT columns, as well as the failure modes of the CFT columns. The failure pattern can be categorized into two types: local buckling failure of steel tube in compression zone, and low cycle fatigue tearing rupture failure of steel tube. The seismic behavior was evaluated through the energy index obtained from each cycle.展开更多

These poles typically feature handholes near their bases, providing access to electrical wiring for installation and maintenance. While essential for functionality, these handholes introduce a vulnerability to the overall structure, making them a potential failure point. Although prior research and analyses on aluminum light poles have been conducted, the behavior of smaller diameter poles containing handholes remains unexplored. Recognizing this need, a research team at the University of Akron undertook a comprehensive experimental program involving aluminum light poles with handholes containing welded inserts in order to gain a better understanding of their fatigue life, mechanical behavior, and failure mechanisms. The research involved testing seven large-scale aluminum light poles each 8-inch diameter, with two separate handholes. These handholes included a reinforcement that was welded to the poles. Finite Element Analysis (FEA), statistical analysis, and comparison analysis with their large counterparts (10-inch diameter) were used to augment the experimental results. The results revealed two distinct failure modes: progressive crack propagation leading to ultimate failure, and rupture of the pole near the weld initiation/termination site around the handhole. The comparison analysis indicated that the 8-inch diameter specimens exhibited an average fatigue life exceeding that of their 10-inch counterparts by an average of 30.7%. The experimental results were plotted alongside the fatigue detail classifications outlined in the Aluminum Design Manual (ADM), enhancing understanding of the fatigue detail category of the respective poles/handholes.展开更多

The fatigue data showed that the material experienced cyclic softening followed by cyclic hardening before the final fracture failure. The microscopic observations demonstrated that the cracks were almost perpendicular to the loading direction with some zigzags and the cracks progressed along both small angle grain boundaries and large angle grain boundaries. Although the cracks were mainly propagated along large angle grain boundaries, the value of grain boundary angle was not the primary factor to determine the crack propagation direction. The local residual strain from the rolling process was released due to the crack propagation and there was more strain relaxation at regions closer to the cracks.展开更多

The conventional methods of determining tensile strength and fatigue life through ASTM or equivalent standard specimen have their limitations due to size requirements of test specimen. Automated Ball Indentation (ABI) is a semi-invasive technique that is useful for determining the material properties. A tungsten carbide ball of diameter 1.57 mm is used to load the test specimen and the force vs. displacement response is used to estimate material properties. Methods have been formulated in the past to predict the fatigue life of the specimen by correlating Cyclic Indentation and Low Cycle fatigue data. In this work, investigation of the role of plastic dissipation energy in failure and its correlation for the two processes by Finite Element simulations in ABAQUS is attempted. Results such as force vs. displacement response, residual depth and plastic diameter with Haggag’s [1] formulation and experimental results are validated first. Then, the plastic dissipation energy density, which is a comparable parameter, is plotted for both Cyclic Indentation and Low Cycle Fatigue. A reasonably good correlation is obtained which also validates the failure life predicted from knee-point approach. Dependence of the pile-up profile of variables such as method of loading and the friction between the contacting bodies is also discussed.展开更多

The effect of titanium content and titanium alloying methods on LCF behavior is analyzed with plastic strain energy density. The results show that all alloys exhibit the cyclic hardening behavior. Raising Ti content can obviously increase the cyclic hardening ability. But the effect of Ti alloying method isn't distinct. Whether for the EA356 alloys or for MA356 alloys, the alloys with low titanium content have longer low-cycle fatigue life than that of the alloys with high titanium content. This is because that the alloys with low titanium content can consume higher cyclic plastic strain energy during cyclic deformation compared with alloys with high titanium content.展开更多

Microstructure consisting of fine lamella-like primary α phase and transformed β matrix was obtained by double annealed treatment, and inhomogeneous grain boundaryαphase was detected. Fatigue fracture surfaces and longitudinal sections of LCF specimens were examined by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Results indicate that more than one crack initiation site can be detected on the LCF fracture surface. The fracture morphology of the secondary crack initiation site is different from that of the primary crack initiation site. When the crack grows along the grain boundaryαphase, continuous grain boundaryαphase leads to a straight propagating manner while discontinuous grain boundaryαphase gives rise to flexural propagating mode.展开更多

Dependence of the pile-up profile of variables such as method of loading and the friction between the contacting bodies is also discussed.
文摘The low-cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior of two kinds of A356 alloys produced by different titanium alloying methods was investigated and compared. This is because that the alloys with low titanium content can consume higher cyclic plastic strain energy during cyclic deformation compared with alloys with high titanium content.

文摘Gravity die casting(GC) and squeeze casting(SC) T4-treated Al-7.0Zn-2.5Mg-2.1Cu alloys were employed to investigate the microstructures, mechanical properties and low cycle fatigue(LCF) behavior. The results show that mechanical properties of SC specimens are significantly better than those of GC specimens due to less cast defects and smaller secondary dendrite arm spacing(SDAS).Excellent fatigue properties are obtained for the SC alloy compared with the GC alloy.GC and SC alloys both exhibit cyclic stabilization at low total strain amplitudes(less than 0.4%) and cyclic hardening at higher total strain amplitudes. The degree of cyclic hardening of SC samples is greater than that of GC samples.Fatigue cracks of GC samples dominantly initiate from shrinkage porosities and are easy to propagate along them, while the crack initiation sites for SC samples are slip bands, eutectic phases and inclusions at or near the free surface.

文摘Low cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior of laser melting deposited (LMD) TC18 titanium alloy was studied at room temperature. When the crack grows along the grain boundaryαphase, continuous grain boundaryαphase leads to a straight propagating manner while discontinuous grain boundaryαphase gives rise to flexural propagating mode.
文摘Based on the failure model of building structural steels under earthquake loading, the low cycle fatigue test at constant strain, the stochastical fatigue test under real earthquake load spectrum and the structural fatigue test are carried out. The experimental results show that microalloying of V Ti and Nb can improve the anti-seismic propersties of steel bars. In the high strain and shori life range, both the static strength and ductility of steels are very important to increasing the low cycle fatigue resistance of steels.
