The dunite is very fresh with a mineral assemblage of olivine (〉95%) + chromite (1%-4%) + diopside (〈1%). Two types of olivine are found in thin sections: one (Fo = 94) is coarse-grained, elongated with development of kink bands, wavy extinction and irregular margins; and the other (Fo = 96) is fine-grained and poly-angied. Some of the olivine grains contain minor Ca, Cr and Ni. Besides the exsolutions in olivine, three micron-size inclusions are also discovered. Analyzed through energy dispersive system (EDS) with unitary analytical method, the average compositions of the inclusions are: Na20, 3.12%-3.84%; MgO, 19.51%-23.79%; Al2O3, 9.33%-11.31%; SiO2, 44.89%-46.29%; CaO, 11.46%-12.90%; Cr2O3, 0.74%-2.29%; FeO, 4.26%- 5.27%, which is quite similar to those of amphibole. Diopside is anhedral f'dling between olivines, or as micro-inclusions oriented in olivines. Chromite appears euhedral distributed between olivines, sometimes with apparent compositional zone. From core to rim of the chromite, Fe content increases and Cr decreases; and A! and Mg drop greatly on the rim. There is always incomplete magnetite zone around the chromite. Compared with the nodular chromite in the same section, the euhedral chromite has higher Fe3O4 and lower MgCr2O4 and MgAI2O4 end member contents, which means it formed under higher oxygen fugacity environment. With a geothermometer estimation, the equilibrium crystalline temperature is 820℃-960℃ for olivine and nodular chromite, 630℃-770℃ for olivine and euhedral chromite, and 350℃-550℃ for olivine and exsoluted magnetite, showing that the exsolutions occurred late at low temperature. Thus we propose that previously depleted mantle harzburgite reacted with the melt containing Na, Al and Ca, and produced an olivine solid solution added with Na^+, Al^3+, Ca^2+, Fe^3+, Cr^3+. With temperature decreasing, the olivine solid solution decomposed; and Fe^3+, Cr^3+ diffused into magnetite and Ca^2+ and Na^+ into clinopyroxene, both of which formed intergrowth textures. A few Fe^3+ and Cr^3+ entered interstitial chromite. Through later tectonism, the peridotite recrystallized and formed deformational coarse grained olivine, fine grained and poly-angled olivine, and euhedral grained chromite. Due to the fast cooling rate of the rock or rapid tectonic emplacement, the exsolution textures in olivine and compositional zones of chromite are preserved.展开更多

The results indicated that the dissolution rate-controlling steps are chemical reaction for olivine and internal diffusion for serpentine. The most influential factor on the dissolution of Mg^2+ from olivine and serpentine was temperature, followed by p H and particle size. A novel method of bioleaching at elevated pH was used in the bioleaching of Jinchuan ore. The results showed that elevated pH could significantly reduce the dissolution of Mg^2+ and acid consumption along with slightly influencing the leaching efficiencies of nickel and cobalt. A model was used to explain the leaching behaviors of high-magnesium nickel sulfide ore in different bioleaching systems. The model suggested that olivine will be depleted eventually, whereas serpentine will remain because of the difference in the rate-controlling steps. Bioleaching at elevated pH is a suitable method for treating high-magnesium nickel sulfide ores.展开更多

They include lamellae of clinopyroxene and clinopyroxene-magnetite intergrowth in the Gaositai and Yellow Hill Alaskan-type complexes, clinopyroxene-magnetite intergrowth in the Klzildag ophiolite, and chromite lamellae in the Hongshishan mafic-ultramafic intrusive complex. These lamellae commonly occur as needle- or rod-like features and are oriented in olivine grains. The host olivine grains have Fo contents of 92.5-92.6 in the Gaositai complex, 86.5-90.1 in the Yellow Hill complex, 93.2-93.4 in the Klzlldag ophiolite and 86.9-88.3 in the Hongshishan complex. Clinopyroxene in the rod-like intergrowth exsolved in olivine grains in the Gaositai and Yellow Hill is diopside with similar major element compositions of CaO (23.6-24.3wt%), SiO2 (52.2-54.0wt%), A1203 (0.67-2.15wt%), Cr203 (0.10-0.42wt%) and Na20 (0.14-0.26wt%). It falls into the compositional field of hydrothermal clinopyroxene and its origin is thus probably related to reaction between dunite and fluids. The enrichment of the fluids in Ca2+, Fe3+, Cr3+ and Na+, resulted in elevated concentrations of these cations in olivine solid solutions via the reaction. With decreasing temperature, the olivine solid solutions altered to an intergrowth of magnetite and clinopyroxene. The Fe3+ and Cr3+ preferentially partitioned into magnetite, while Ca2+ and Na+ entered clinopyroxene. Since the studied Alaskan-type complexes and ophiolite formed in a subduction environment, the fluids were probably released from the subducted slab. In contrast, the exsolved chromite in olivine grains from the Hongshishan complex that formed in post-orogenic extension setting can be related to olivine equilibrated with Cr-bearing liquid. Similarly, these lamellae have all been observed in serpentine surrounding olivine grains, indicating genetic relations with serpentinization.展开更多

Using these exposures as training sites, this study used a method of combining two spectral indices (950 nm/750 nm and 2000 nm/1500 nm), one maturity index (Is/FeO), and four chemical content indices (FeO, Mg, Al, Ca), through a decision tree classifier, to map olivine-rich units on the west lunar surface based on mosaicked Clementine image (500 m pixel size). Most classified olivine exposures are found inside craters or on their rays, suggesting that olivine exposures are directly associated with the impact processes. The results have been validated in several selected sites, though further validations with data from the newest missions are strongly needed.展开更多

The bulk of this material is currently being sold as a slag conditioner at a rela- tively low price; hence, alternative uses of the process dust are now being sought. Information regarding the chemical composition of the material as a function of particle size facilitates product modifications through exclusion or mixing of individual size fractions. This paper demonstrates how such information can be obtained from air classification experiments when these are combined with chemical analysis of the produced size fractions. The classification and subsequent analysis of the olivine process dust revealed that the finer size fractions had high loss on ignition (LOI) values and were relatively low in MgO when compared with the bulk analysis. Removal of the finer fractions re- sulted in a remaining coarse product of significantly higher quality. The coarse material could be used as a raw material for further processing; it could be recycled or it could constitute a new product in itself.展开更多

Further, high-alumina hematite pellets show very high reduction degradation index(RDI) during low temperature(500-650 ℃) reduction due to their volume expansion and lattice distortion. Noamundi(India) hematite ore contains very high Al2O3(2.3%) with adverse ratio of alumina to silica(~2) for which, it shows very high RDI. In this work, the acid pellets prepared from Noamundi ore fines of optimum Blaine fineness show good cold crushing strength(CCS). However, it shows very high RDI(77%). In order to reduce RDI, Mg O in form of two different gangue-containing fluxes, such as pyroxenite and olivine in varying quantities has been added. The optimum requirement and performance of these fluxes has been examined and compared. Both pyroxenite and olivine fluxed pellets show significant lowering of RDI(26% and 23%, respectively) and improvement of other properties, viz CCS, swelling indices etc with good reducibility(70%-77%). Finally, a good quality acidic hematite pellet was developed from high-alumina ore without using any lime which is very important charge material in combination of basic sinter in blast furnace.展开更多

That process is the reaction of CO2 and water with rocks, a process known as weathering. It is a logical choice to see if we can use the same process to remove also the vastly higher CO2 emissions caused by burning in a few hundred years the fossil fuels that have taken hundreds of millions of years for their formation. Many people claim that the rate of weathering of olivine is too slow to counter climate change, but they base this on experimental data in sterile laboratories, under exclusion of biotic and other environmental factors. As many conditions determine the weathering rate at each specific location, these laboratory conditions are irrelevant for the real world. Weathering models based on these laboratory data are off by orders of magnitude. Weathering experiments that use conditions closer to nature [1] show already much higher weathering rates. In this note I provide some data on the weathering of olivine in nature, which make clear that the weathering of olivine is fast enough to play an important role in the cycle of CO2 capture and its safe and sustainable storage as carbonate rocks. The CO2 released by volcanism has always been captured by the weathering of rocks since the origin of the Earth. Without this mechanism the Earth would be a lifeless planet with a CO2 atmosphere in the order of 100 bar, as our neighbor planet Venus demonstrates.展开更多

The tectonic evolution occurred through intraplate volcanism and erupted through fissure systems along the Dead Sea, transforming the fault during Miocene to Pleistocene period. Three stages of eruption of MB have been recorded during Pleistocene from 6 to 0.6 Ma. The petrographic analyses data show that the MB rocks are composed of plagioclase, olivine, pyroxene, and magnetite, including secondary minerals calcite, iddingsite, serpentine, and zeolite. Furthermore, the MB rocks have narrow ranges of major and trace element concentrations, and are of under saturated silica type and belong to sodic alkaline magma series. The geochemical characteristics of MB indicate that MB was derived from a slightly fractionated magma as reflected by its high MgO (6.3 - 11.7 ppm) concentration with Mg number from 0.41 to 0.61, low silica content (40.83 - 47.55 wt%), and high Cr and Ni concentrations (115 - 475 and 105 - 553 ppm, respectively). This basalt exhibited low degree of partial melting (10%) for garnet peridotite mantle source. The model mineral fractionation showed that the MB could be fractionated to clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, olivine, and plagioclase.展开更多

These xenoliths are pyrope lherzolite and pyrope dunite based upon compositions of coexisting minerals. Unlike the pyrope lherzolite, which contained pyrope with moderate calcium (Ca)-component content (about 15 mol%), the dunite contained subcalcic chromium (Cr)-pyrope with low Ca-component content (less than 10 mol%). All investigated minerals contained dominating hydrocarbons and their derivatives represented by aliphatic (paraffins, olefins), cyclic (naphthenes, arenes), oxygenated (alcohols, ethers), and heterocyclic (dioxanes, furans) hydrocarbons;nitrogenated, chlorinated, and sulfonated compounds;carbon dioxide (CO2);and water (H2O). The relative concentration (rel%) of total hydrocarbon was 79.7 rel% for diamonds, 69.1 rel% for garnet, and 92.6 rel% for olivine, with a general amount of components ranging from 161 to 206. New data on volatiles in diamonds, associated garnet, and olivine suggest the presence of a wide spectrum of hydrocarbons along with nitrogen (N2), CO2, and H2O in some upper mantle areas.展开更多

In our study, clays were observed in natural olivine samples, which were used for laboratory experiments in a supercritical CO_2 system at 140C and15 MPa. Initial olivine samples were crushed into two sizes which were large grains of w850-1000 mm and powder particles of w75-150 mm, with the durations of 400 and 1000 h for the powder and grains, respectively. The results showed amorphous silica was newly formed and this passivating layer could mitigate the water-rock interaction to some extent, but it would not play a long-term prohibited effect on secondary mineral carbonate formation as it is a Fe(III) free silica coating. More interestingly, the secondary carbonates were observed to form near the surface sites where locates more clays. Our findings provide insights into the reaction mechanisms of olivine-scCO_2-water interaction process in natural ultrabasic rocks.展开更多

Here we investigated olivine ionic conductivity at 4 GPa, as a function of temperature, crystallographic orientation, and oxygen fugacity, corresponding to the topmost asthenospheric conditions. The results demonstrate that the ionic conductivity is insensitive to f_(O2) under relatively reduced conditions(f_(O2) below Re-ReO_(2) buffer), whereas it has a clear f_(O2)-dependence under relatively oxidized conditions(f_(O2) around the magnetite-hematite buffer). The ionic conduction in olivine may contribute significantly to the conductivity anomaly in the topmost asthenosphere especially at relatively oxidized conditions.展开更多

Combining accurate sound velocity data under different P–T conditions with density and heat capacity data at ambient pressure, the density, adiabatic bulk modulus, shear modulus, and most importantly, thermal expansion and heat capacity, of San Carlos are extracted to 14 GPa by a numerical procedure using classic thermodynamic relationships. These data are in agreement with published findings. 文摘The replacement of Li by Na in an analogue battery to the commercial Li-ion one appears a sustainable strategy to overcome the several concerns triggered by the increased demand for the electrochemical energy storage. However, the apparently simple change of the alkali metal represents a challenging step which requires notable and dedicated studies. Therefore,we investigate herein the features of a NaFe_(0.6)Mn_(0.4)PO_(4)(NFMP)cathode with triphylite structure achieved from the conversion of a LiFe_(0.6)Mn_(0.4)PO_(4)(LFMP)olivine for application in Na-ion battery. The work initially characterizes the structure, morphology and performances in sodium cell of NFMP,achieving a maximum capacity exceeding 100 mAh g^(−1)at a temperature of 55℃,adequate rate capability, and suitable retention confirmed by ex-situ measurements.Subsequently, the study compares in parallel key parameters of the NFMP and LFMP such as Na^(+)/Li^(+)ions diffusion, interfacial characteristics, and reaction mechanism in Na/Li cells using various electrochemical techniques. The data reveal that relatively limited modifications of NFMP chemistry, structure and morphology compared to LFMP greatly impact the reaction mechanism, kinetics and electrochemical features. These changes are ascribed to the different physical and chemical features of the two compounds, the slower mobility of Na^(+)with respect to Li^(+),and a more resistive electrode/electrolyte interphase of sodium compared with lithium.Relevantly, the study reveals analogue trends of the charge transfer resistance and the ion diffusion coefficient in NFMP and LFMP during the electrochemical process in half-cell.Hence,the NFMP achieved herein is suggested as a possible candidate for application in a low-cost,efficient,and environmentally friendly Na-ion battery.

In addition, the ionic strength effect on the adsorption was also investigated, but it owns little effect on the adsorption process of copper due to the formation of inner sphere adsorption of copper on olivine. The experimental data show that olivine has a high acid buffer capacity and is an effective adsorbent for copper.

文摘To inhibit the dissolution of Mg^2+ during the bioleaching process of high-magnesium nickel sulfide ore, the effect of major bioleaching factors on the dissolution of Mg^2+ from olivine and serpentine was investigated and kinetics studies were carried out. Bioleaching at elevated pH is a suitable method for treating high-magnesium nickel sulfide ores.

文摘Exsolution microstructures in olivine grains from dunite units in a few selected tectonic environments are reported here. Similarly, these lamellae have all been observed in serpentine surrounding olivine grains, indicating genetic relations with serpentinization.

文摘Olivine exposures at the central peak of Copernicus crater of the Earth's Moon have been confirmed by telescope observations and Clementine spectra data. The results have been validated in several selected sites, though further validations with data from the newest missions are strongly needed.
文摘As a result of the production of dry olivine sand products at A/S Olivin's production plant at Aheim in western Norway, an annual quantity of some 20000-30000 t of process dust is produced. The coarse material could be used as a raw material for further processing; it could be recycled or it could constitute a new product in itself.
文摘Pelletization of hematite ore requires high fineness and very high induration temperature(~1325 ℃) owing to its poor diffusion bonding unlike magnetite ore. Finally, a good quality acidic hematite pellet was developed from high-alumina ore without using any lime which is very important charge material in combination of basic sinter in blast furnace.
文摘One natural process has since the origin of the Earth removed almost all the CO2 that was ever produced by volcanism. Without this mechanism the Earth would be a lifeless planet with a CO2 atmosphere in the order of 100 bar, as our neighbor planet Venus demonstrates.

文摘We report the petrology and oxygen isotopic composition, using a Cameca Nano SIMS 50L ion microprobe,of a plagioclase-olivine inclusion,C#1,found in the Ningqiang carbonaceous chondrite. In addition to major phases(plagioclase, spinel and olivine),C#1 is also surrounded by a pyroxene rim(64 vol%Ca-rich and 36 vol%Ca-poor pyroxenes). On a three-isotope oxygen diagram,δ^(17)O vs.δ^(18)O,the compositions of individual minerals analyzed in C#1 fall along the carbonaceous chondrite anhydrous mineral line(CCAM),and oxygen isotopic compositions in C#1 show significant variability in δ^(18)O and δ^(17)O.The oxygen isotopic compositions of the pyroxene rim minerals are similar to those of the other host minerals, which suggests that the rim likely formed from the same melting process as the host. The rim is considered to have formed as a result of interaction between an ^(16)O-poor gas and a melt. Some spinel grains are typically ^(16)O-rich and likely of relict origin, which is similar to ^(16)O-rich Ca-,Al-rich inclusions, which are probably a precursor of C#1.The inclusion then likely melted in an ^(16)O-poor region where chondrules form, accompanied by oxygen isotope exchange with an ^(16)O-poor gas. Some anorthite, pyroxene and spinel might have undergone fluid-assisted thermal metamorphism on the Ningqiang chondrite parent body. The oxygen isotope data and evolution of the C#1 plagioclase-olivine inclusion are similar with those of Al-chondrules in chondrites.

文摘To understand the influence of fluid CO2 on ultramafic rock-hosted seafloor hydrothermal systems on the early Earth,we monitored the reaction between San Carlos olivine and a CO2-rich NaCl fluid at 300 C and 500 bars.During the experiments, the total carbonic acid concentration(∑XO2) in the fluid decreased from approximately 65 to 9 mmol/kg.Carbonate minerals, magnesite, and subordinate amount of dolomite were formed via the water-rock interaction. The H2 concentration in the fluid reached approximately 39 mmol/kg within 2736 h,which is relatively lower than the concentration generated by the reaction between olivine and a CO2-free NaCl solution at the same temperature. As seen in previous hydrothermal experiments using komatiite, ferrous iron incorporation into Mg-bearing carbonate minerals likely limited iron oxidation in the fluids and the resulting H2 generation during the olivine alteration.Considering carbonate mineralogy over the temperature range of natural hydrothermal fields,H2 generation is likely suppressed at temperatures below approximately 300℃ due to the formation of the Mg-bearing carbonates.Nevertheless,H_2 concentration in fluid at 300℃ could be still high due to the temperature dependency of magnetite stability in ultramafic systems. Moreover, the Mg-bearing carbonates may play a key role in the ocean-atmosphere system on the early Earth.Recent studies suggest that the subduction of carbonated ultramafic rocks may transport surface CO2 species into the deep mantle. This process may have reduced the huge initial amount of CO2 on the surface of the early Earth. Our approximate calculations demonstrate that the subduction of the Mg-bearing carbonates formed in komatiite likely played a crucial role as one of the CO2 carriers from the surface to the deep mantle, even in hot subduction zones.
文摘The Zarqa-Ma’in basalt (MB) occurs near a plateau basalt (wadi fills) covering about 15 km2 of Makawir, Ataruz, and Hammat um Hasana cone areas in central Jordan. The model mineral fractionation showed that the MB could be fractionated to clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, olivine, and plagioclase.

文摘Volatile components in diamonds, associated garnet (pyrope), and olivine from two extremely rare xenoliths of diamondiferous peridotites recovered from the Udachnaya kimberlite pipe in Yakutia, Russia, were analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) using a Focus DSQ II Series Single Quadrupole GC–MS (Thermo Scientific, USA). New data on volatiles in diamonds, associated garnet, and olivine suggest the presence of a wide spectrum of hydrocarbons along with nitrogen (N2), CO2, and H2O in some upper mantle areas.

文摘CO_2 mineral sequestration(in ultrabasic or basaltic rocks) has been considered as a promising long-term and stable approach to reduce CO_2 in the atmosphere and would counteract the effect of global warming.Meanwhile, clays are widely found in ultrabasic reservoirs. Our findings provide insights into the reaction mechanisms of olivine-scCO_2-water interaction process in natural ultrabasic rocks.

文摘The oxygen fugacity(f_(O2)) may affect the ionic conductivity of olivine under upper mantle conditions because Mg vacancies can be produced in the crystal structure by the oxidization of iron from Fe^(2+) to Fe3+. The ionic conduction in olivine may contribute significantly to the conductivity anomaly in the topmost asthenosphere especially at relatively oxidized conditions.
文摘The high-MgO ultramafic volcanic rocks in the NW Ad Dhala province are classified as meimechite according to the IUGS classification scheme. This province represents the southeastern outcrops of the Yemen Volcanic Group(YVG),which constitutes part of the AfroArabian continental large igneous province(LIP) and located within the boundary of the Afar mantle plume. In this study,we present the chemical compositions of olivine and Cr-spinel in meimechite rocks from Bagah Village in NW Ad Dhala province, aiming to characterize the genesis and partial melting conditions and to estimate the crystallization temperatures of these high-MgO rocks.Olivine crystals are characterized by high forsterite, ranges from Mg-rich core(up to Fo_(89.69)) to relatively Fe-rich rim(down to Fo_(78.57)),high CaO,MgO and MnO whereas Cr-spinel crystals have high TiO_(2) and Cr# values ranging from 0.49 to 0.63 which indicate that they are crystallized from primary magma and are typical of volcanic olivine and Crspinel that formed in intraplate tectonic setting.Olivine and Cr-spinel compositional data and primary melt composition(MgO ~ 23 wt.%) are compatible with the derivation of studied meimechite rocks from peridotite mantle source by small degrees of partial melting under conditions of high temperature and pressure at great depths, mostly within the garnet stability field. Also, these data provide a compelling indicator for the important role of upwelling Afar mantle plume in the genesis of these high-MgO ultramafic volcanic rocks. Finally, based on the different olivine-liquid equilibrium methods and Al-in-olivine thermometer approach the estimated crystallization temperature ranges from 1450 to 1490℃,and mantle potential temperature(Tp) ranges from 1617 to 1677℃,at high pressure(3-4.8 GPa).These high temperatures substantiate the existence of the Afar thermal mantle plume and its important role in the genesis of the studied meimechite rocks.

文摘In this study, the thermal expansion and heat capacity of San Carlos olivine under high temperature and high pressure are reported. To estimate the temperature gradient in the upper mantle, we also report the fitting equations of thermal expansion and heat capacity of San Carlos olivine as a function of both temperature and pressure to the P–T condition of the 410 km discontinuity, which provide the thermodynamic properties with increasing depth in the Earth's interior.
