However, there have been no studies to date that consulted the seniors themselves regarding these services. Thus, this study was conducted to investigate the age-friendliness of outpatient clinic’s services provided in PHCSS from perspective of elderly service recipients. Methods: Three focus groups were designed. The focus groups included receivers of care (senior patients and caregivers for senior patients) and healthcare providers (physicians, nurses, administrators and medical record officers). The discussed topics in the focus groups were based on WHO’s recommended three domains of improvement for an age-friendly Primary Health Care (PHC): Information, education and training, community-based health care management systems, and the physical environment.展开更多

Increasing life expectancy leads to an increase in the number of elderly people in Indonesia. Increasing the number of elderly population, on the one hand, is encouraging but on the other hand, it creates complex problems. Problems that are often faced by the elderly over time occur due to a process of decline that has an impact on changes in the structure and function of organs including the brain. These conditions have an impact on decreasing brain cell function which results in impaired cognitive function in the elderly. The aging affecting cognitive impairment will cause the elderly to have impairment in carrying out daily activities so that they will depend on others and eventually, their quality of life decreases. One of the efforts to resolve such issue is by maintaining and improving cognitive ability through brain stimulation. Optimum brain stimulation is combining physical, mental, social and spiritual stimulation into one activity. This research aims at finding out the “Effects of Brain Stimulation in Group Activities on the Cognitive Function Improvement of the Elderly People in the Community Health Center of Bojonagara Area in Bandung Municipality”. Quasi-experimental design is used in this research with Pre Post test control group design approach. Samples used are 36 people for intervention group and 36 people for control group. The sample is taken using purposive sampling technique. The intervention of brain stimulation is provided 3 times a week for 7 weeks. Brain stimulation is provided through brain gym, relaxation and dhikr. Data are analyzed using Wilcoxon and Mann Whitney. The research result indicates the effects of brain stimulation in group activity on cognitive function of the elderly people (p value 0.001). Therefore, it is suggested that the head of the community health center and the lead of elderly health programs apply brain stimulation as structured activity for elderly intelligent health in the working area of the Community Health Center.展开更多

The situation is also added that the elderly usually suffer from a variety of physiological disorders that are chronic, and biological aspect, psychological aspect, socio economic aspect will experience setback. The empowerment of elderly group is an effort to give power or strength so that elderly have independence, especially in aspects of intellectual ability, and aspects Physical, the empowerment of the elderly is done by improving ability through education. This study aims to analyze the influence of empowerment of the elderly group through health education on the independence of Activitiey Daily Living (ADL). The research design used quasi-experiment with the approach of pre post test group design without comparison (control), while the data analysis used t-test. The results of the study before being carried out empowerment through health education on the independence of the average value of independence were 9.9506 (SD 4.66074) and the result after being carried out empowerment through health education became 13.2716 (SD.4.61523) Research Results showed statistically significant influence on empowering the elderly group through health education to independence of the ADL with a p-value of 0.04. Based on this, it is recommended that empowerment for the elderly should be determined in Posbindu activities. The effect of empowering the elderly group through more effective health education can influence the level of independence by providing a guidebook (module) which is equipped with interesting pictures about the procedures for fulfilling the needs of daily activities, finished providing educational guidebooks. The guidebook is given to the elderly group can be read repeatedly so that it affects the elderly memory in a longer period of time.展开更多

This study aims to clarify age and gender-related differences in their physical functions. Participants included 167 elderly individuals (males, 78;mean age, 76.5 years;SD = 6.0 years;females, 89;mean age, 75.5 years;SD = 4.5 years) who participated in a 1-year regular exercise therapy twice a week. The following eight physical function tests were selected: grip strength, 10-m obstacle walking time, one-legged balance with eyes open, sit-ups, sitting trunk flexion, 6-min walk, stepping by sitting position, and a timed up & go (TUG). Two-way analysis of variance was used to examine mean differences by gender and age: young elderly group (aged 65 - 74 years) and old elderly group (aged ≥ 75 years). In the grip strength, sit-ups, 6-min walk, 10-m obstacle walking time, stepping by sitting position, and sitting trunk flexion tests, males were superior in the former four tests, and females were superior in the latter two tests. The young elderly group was superior in all tests except for sit-ups compared with the old elderly group. The balance during one-legged with eyes open test was superior in males compared with females in the young elderly group, but decreased in males in the old elderly group. In conclusion, physical functions of the elderly during maintenance period are different between genders. Muscle strength, muscle endurance, whole-body endurance, and walking ability are superior in males, whereas flexibility and agility are superior in females. The old elderly group was inferior in all the elements of physical function except muscle endurance.展开更多

We interviewed 21 dementia carers qualified working at group homes in Prefecture A about the practical contents of and their thoughts on “care that respects individuality”. The data obtained from the interviews were analyzed using the modified grounded theory approach (M-GTA). As a result, 14 concepts regarding the contents of “care that respects individuality” provided to elderly people with dementia living in group homes as perceived by dementia carers qualified were generated in the following 4 categories: “placing emphasis on the individual”, “respecting feelings”, “eliciting strengths”, and “close mutual relationship”.展开更多
