Effect of chromium on hot corrosion behavior of arc-sprayed NiCr coatings

In this article,NiCr coatings with chromium content of 13%,27%and 41%were prepared by arc spraying.They were exposed in molten salts(NaCl-Na_(2)SO_(4))at 800℃for 200 hours.The effect of chromium content on the hot corrosion behavior of the coatings was in-vestigated.X-ray diffraction(XRD)and scanning electron microscope with energy dispersion spectrum(SEM-EDS)were used to analyze the phase compositions,morphologies and chemical compositions of the coatings.The results show that NiCr13 coating exhibited the worst hot corrosion resistance due to the low chromium content,which resulted in NiO being the major reaction product.It should be noted that the hot corrosion resistance of NiCr27 coating was better than that of NiCr41 coating.The basic fluxing of Cr_(2)O_(3) lowered its protection during the hot corrosion process and led to the formation of porous Cr_(2)O_(3) on the NiCr41 coating.The molten salts accelerated the oxidation reac-tion resulting in thicker and porous oxide scales formed on the surfaces of coatings. 展开更多

The cyclic oxidation at 800 ℃ and hot corrosion in molten 75% Na2SO4+25% NaC1 at 800 ℃ of the three different chromizing coatings were investigated. The effects of Al_2O_3 or Y_2O_3 on the cyclic oxidation and hot corrosion behavior of the chromizing coatings were discussed. The metastableβtitanium alloy TB8(Ti-12.76Mo-2.13Nb-2.73A1-0.16Si)was used as the original material,and the secondary processing method combining equal channel angular pressing(ECAP)and heat treatment was adopted.With the help of optical microscope(OM),scanning electron microscope(SEM)and X-ray diffractometer(XRD),the corrosion behavior of TB8 titanium alloy after different secondary processing(800℃/850℃solid solution-520℃aging,ECAP-800℃/850℃solid solution-520℃aging,and800℃/850℃solid solution-ECAP-520℃aging)was studied.The experimental results show that the hot corrosion products of the six samples are similar,mainly Na_(2)Si_(2)O_(5),MoS_(2),TiCl_(2),Ti(SO_(4))_(2),and TiS.Due to the grains of the TB8 titanium alloy treated by 850℃solid solution-ECAP-520℃aging are obviously refined,the surface structure is the most smooth and dense,forming a continuous Al2O3protective film,and the surface defects are the least after corrosion.Its corrosion layer thickness is the lowest(102.3μm),only 36.5%-81.4%of that of other secondary processing titanium alloys.In addition,the corrosion kinetics curves of the six materials all follow parabolic laws,and the minimum corrosion weight gain of the samples after 850℃solutionECAP-520℃aging treatment is 0.7507 mg·mm^(-2),showing better hot corrosion resistance. 展开更多

The hot corrosion behaviors of as-cast and preoxidized Ni-xCr-6.8Al based alloys in the mixture of Na2SO4+25% NaCl at 873 K were studied. The results show that the mass loss of Ni-xCr-6.8Al based alloys decreases with the increase of Cr content. Preoxidation improves the resistance to corrosion regardless of the concentration of Cr. The kinetics of as-cast Ni-12Cr-6.8Al and Ni-16Cr-6.8Al based alloys fits the parabolic law well, while that of the as-cast Ni-20Cr-6.8Al based alloy fits the power law. The kinetics of all the preoxidized samples obey the logarithmic law. The mechanism of the as-cast alloys can be well explained by the acid-base melting model. The behavior of the preoxidized alloys is found to be mainly determined by the properties of the oxide layer formed during the preoxidation to a large extend. 展开更多

The hot corrosion behavior of a Ni?20Cr?18W (mass fraction, %) superalloy in the mixture of 75%Na 2 SO 4?25%NaCl melts at 700 and 800 °C was studied. The results demonstrate that the alloy suffers from serious hot corrosion attack in the mixture molten salt. Meanwhile, the degradation of the substrate accelerates with increasing the corrosion temperature. The corrosion layer has an obvious duplex microstructure, and the Cr-depletion zone is detected obviously nearby the inner corrosion layer. The main corrosion products at 700 and 800 °C are almost the same and mainly include NiO, Cr2O3and Ni3S2, but a trace amount of NiCrO2 is detected at 800 °C for 20 h. The hot corrosion mechanism and formation mechanism of corrosion scales of the Ni?20Cr?18W superalloy in the molten salt are proposed. 展开更多

A Ni-7Cr-4Al(mass fraction, %) nanocomposite was fabricated by co-electrodeposition of Ni with Cr(40 nm) and Al(100 nm) nanoparticles from a nickel sulfate bath, and its oxidation at 800 °C in air and hot corrosion under molten 75% Na2SO4 + 25% Na Cl salts(mass fraction) at 750 °C were investigated. For comparison, Ni-11 Cr nanocomposite and Ni-film were also investigated in order to elucidate the effect of Cr nanoparticles. The results indicate that Cr and Al nanoparticles are dispersed in the electrodeposited nanocrystalline Ni grains(in size range of 20-60 nm). Ni-7Cr-4Al nanocomposite exhibits a dramatically increased oxidation resistance compared with Ni-11 Cr nanocomposite and Ni-film due to the fast formation of alumina scale, which also improves its hot corrosion resistance under molten 75% Na2SO4 + 25% Na Cl salts. 展开更多

Based on the experimental results in the previous paper, the mechanism of the hot corrosion behavior of alloy system Ni-16Cr-gAl-2W- 1Mo-4Co-(0~4)Ti-f(0 ~ 4)Ta-(0~4)Nb (in at%) is investigated. In the Ti and Nb-rich corners, hot corrosion is controlled by the basic fluxing mechanism, and a dense and protective surface scale is formed which results in the better hot corrosion resistance for the alloys in these regions. While in the Ta-rich comer,the basic and acidic mechanisms function alternatively, which results in the catastrophic corrosion by forming the porous and non-protective scale, so the alloys in this region show poor hot corrosion resistance. In addition, the concept of 'effective chromium content' seemed to give a correct prediction of the hot corrosion resistance of such alloy systems. 展开更多

The effect of laser-treatment on hot corrosion resistance was also examined.It was shown that CoNiCrAlTaSiY coating had superior properties in resistance to hot corrosion due to the readiness of the formation of a protective Cr2O3 scale on the coating surface.A model for the mechanism of hot corrosion of this coating has been suggested. Hot corrosion resistance of this coating was significantly increased by the laser treatment simply because the surface of the as sprayed coating was densified by the high power laser beam. 展开更多

Hot-dip galvanized(HDG)steel sheets were treated for 30 s?24 h by the rare earth aqueous solution containing 20 g/L Ce(NO3)3·6H2O,and the growth behavior and corrosion resistance of the rare earth film were investigated by SEM,EDS,AES and NSS.The results reveal that the rare earth film becomes thick while the mass gain of the samples does not distinctly change due to the zinc dissolution with the increase of treatment time.The film grows up more quickly and is apt to cracking in the vicinity of zinc grain boundaries,and eventually the film partly warps and flakes off with increasing film thickness.The NSS results show that the corrosion resistance of the film is dominated by both the film thickness and the cracks.With increasing treatment time,the corrosion resistance of the film increases within 1 h due to the increased film thickness and decreases after 1 h because the cracking and flaking off gradually become dominant factor. 展开更多

The hot corrosion resistance and mechanism of three arc spraying coatings (SL30, 45CT and FeCrAl) have been studied. The result showed that coating SL30 and 45CT have a better protection ability against hot corrosion. The corrosion behavior of hot dip galvanized steel pretrvated with bis-[triethoxysilylpropyl] tetrasulfide (BTESPT) modified with alumina particles was studied. The corrosion resistance of the passiving films was evaluated by Tafel polarization curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The films formed on the galvanized steel substrate were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. The surface morphology of the treated hot dip galvanized steel samples was observed by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope. The results show that the pretrvatments on the basis of silane films modified with nanoalumina particles have reduced both anodic and cathodic current densities, and increased total impedance in the measured frequency, consequently, improving corrosion protection for hot dip galvanized steel during immersion in NaCl solutions compared to chromate films and silane films. 展开更多

Biodegradable Mg-based implants are widely used in clinical applications because they exhibit mechanical properties comparable to those of human bone and require no revision surgery for their removal.Among Mg-based alloys,Mg–Zn–Ca–(Mn)alloys have been extensively investigated for medical applications because the constituent elements of these alloys,Mg,Zn,Ca,and Mn,are present in human tissues as nutrient elements.In this study,we investigated the effect of the hot extrusion temperature on the microstructure,mechanical properties,and biodegradation rate of Mg–Zn–Ca–(Mn)alloys.The results showed that the addition of Mn and a decrease in the extrusion temperature resulted in grain refinement followed by an increase in the strength and a decrease in the elongation at fracture of the alloys.The alloys showed different mechanical properties along the directions parallel and perpendicular to the extrusion direction.The corrosion test of the alloys in the Hanks’solution revealed that the addition of Mn significantly reduced the corrosion rate of the alloys.The Mg–2 wt%Zn–0.7 wt%Ca–1 wt%Mn alloy hot-extruded at 300℃ with an ultimate tensile strength of 278MPa,an yield strength of 229MPa,an elongation at fracture of 10%,and a corrosion rate of 0.3 mm/year was found to be suitable for orthopedic implants. 展开更多

Asphalt mixture pavement reheating is one of the important steps in hot in-place recycling(HIR).To improve the heating speed of asphalt pavement in HIR,based on the numerical analysis model of asphalt mixture heating process,a new multi-layer low-temperature heating method(MLHM)was proposed.Considering input heat flux,the thermal capacity and thermal resistance of asphalt mixture,the heat transfer model was established based on energy conservation law.By heating the asphalt mixture in layers,it changes the situation that the heat energy can only be input from the upper surface of the asphalt mixture pavement.Through the simulation of the heating method of asphalt mixture in the existing technology,the result shows that the existing heating methods lead to serious aging or charring of the asphalt mixture.By MLHM,the upper and the bottom of the asphalt mixture are heated at the same time,and the heating temperature is lower than other heat methods,which not only reduces the heating thickness and increases the heating area of the asphalt mixture pavement,but also improves the heating speed,saves the energy resource and ensures the heating quality.Especially,by MLHM,the heating uniformity is better and speed is faster. 展开更多

An improvement in the corrosion resistance of alloys at elevated temperature is a factor for their potential use in gas turbines. In this study, Co Ni Cr Al Y has been coated on the L605 alloy using air plasma spray(APS) and high-velocity oxygen fuel(HVOF) coating techniques to enhance its corrosion resistance. Hot corrosion studies were conducted on uncoated and coated samples in a molten salt environment at 850°C under cyclic conditions. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to determine the corrosion kinetics. The samples were subjected to scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction for further investigation. In coated samples, the formation of Al2O3 and Cr2O3 in the coating acts as a diffusion barrier that could resists the inward movement of the corrosive species present in the molten salt. Coated samples showed very less spallation, lower weight gain, less porosity, and internal oxidation as compared to uncoated sample.HVOF-coated sample showed greater corrosion resistance and inferred that this is the best technique under these conditions. 展开更多

To shield TiAl alloy from hot corrosion attack,a compact protective coating was fabricated by the combination of aluminizing,anodization and pre-oxidation.The hot corrosion behavior of the coated-TiAl specimen was investigated in the mixture salt consisting of 75 wt.%Na2SO4 and 25 wt.%NaCl at 700°C.Results indicated that the anodization and pre-oxidation were beneficial to the generation of Al2O3 layer,which could act as a diffusion barrier to prevent the molten salts and oxygen from diffusing into the alloy during exposure to a hot corrosion environment while the aluminizing coating could provide sufficient aluminum source to support the continuous formation of Al2O3 layer.Moreover,the internal stress of the coating was reduced due to the formation of a gradient coating consisting of TiAl3 and TiAl2. 展开更多

The effects of rare earth ytterbium(Yb)addition and hot extrusion on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of as-cast ADC12 were studied by optical microscopy(OM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS)and X-ray diffraction(XRD).The experimental results demonstrate that both the Si phase andβ-Al5FeSi phase in the alloy with 0.9 wt%Yb have been remarkably refined,and the Al3Yb intermetallic compound has also been obtained.The Si,β-Al5FeSi,and rare earth phases are further refined in the alloy at 0.9 wt%Yb and hot extrusion.The results of the immersion corrosion tests and electrochemical experiments show that the corrosion current density(8.56μA/cm2)of the alloy with 0.9 wt%Yb addition and hot extrusion is 50.6%lower than the untreated alloy(17.33μA/cm2),and the polarization resistance(9252Ω·cm2)was 71.3%higher than the untreated alloy(2654Ω·cm2).The corrosion in the cathode phase in the micro-battery was refined to varying degrees attributable to the addition of Yb and hot extrusion,where the cathode reaction in the corrosion process caused a decrease of the corrosion rate. 展开更多

In order to improve the hot corrosion resistance of DZ125 alloy,Ce-Y modified aluminum coatings were prepared on DZ125 alloy by pack cementation process at 950°C for 2 h.The microstructure,phase constitution and formation mechanism of the coatings were investigated.The hot corrosion behaviors of DZ125 alloy and the coatings in molten salt environment of 25%K2SO4+75%Na2SO4(mass fraction)at 900°C were studied.Results show that the obtained Al-Ce-Y coatings were mainly composed of Al3Ni2,Al3Ni and Cr7Ni3,with a thickness of about 120μm.After hot corrosion test,DZ125 alloy suffered catastrophic hot corrosion and serious internal oxidation and internal sulfidation arose.Two layers of corrosion products formed on surfaces of DZ125 alloy,including the outer layer consisting of Cr2O3 and NiCr2O4,and the inner layer of Al2O3,Ni3S2 and Ni-base solid solution.After being coated with Al-Ce-Y coating,the hot corrosion resistance of DZ125 alloy is improved notably,due to the formation of a dense scale mainly consisting of Al-rich Al2O3 in the coating layer. 展开更多
