The objective of this study is to test the zinc coating of the steel plate. A literature review was conducted to identify the zinc coating techniques, and the companies that can provide different coating service was identified. A salt fog chamber was built that was in compliance with the ANSI B117 code, and the steel plates that were coated by the identified companies were tested using the salt fog chamber. The results indicated that the coating technique that had the best performance in preventing corrosion was the Greenkote plates with passivation. The galvanized option had the roughest coating layer, and it was the most reactive in the salt water solution. This makes it non-ideal for the dynamic rail environment because the increased friction of the plate could damage the supports, especially during extreme temperatures that would cause the rail to expand or contract. Greenkote with Phosphate and ArmorGalv also provided increased corrosion prevention with a smooth, strong finish, but it had more rust on the surface area than the Greenkote with ELU passivation. The ArmorGalv sample had more rust on the surface area than the Greenkote samples. This may not be a weakness in the ArmorGalv process;rather, it likely was the result of this particular sample not having the added protection of a colored coating.展开更多

The chemical constitution and composition in the depth of passive films formed on HNSS were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS). HNSS has excellent pitting and crevice corrosion resistance compared to 316L stainless steel. With increasing the nitrogen content in steels, pitting potentials and critical pitting temperature (CPT) increase, and the maximum, average pit depths and average weight loss decrease. The CPT of HNSS is correlated with the alloying element content through the measure of alloying for resistance to corrosion (MARC). The MARC can be expressed as an equation of CPT=2.55MARC-29. XPS results show that HNSS exhibiting excellent corrosion resistance is attributed to the enrichment of nitrogen on the surface of passive films, which forms ammonium ions increasing the local pH value and facilitating repassivation, and the synergistic effects of molybdenum and nitrogen.展开更多

The results show that ultra high strength steels remain martensite structures and have anodic dissolution characteristic with an increase of chromium content. There is no typical passive region on the polarization curves of an ultra high strength stainless steel, AerMet 100 steel, and 300M steel. However, chromium improves the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel remarkably. It has the slowest corrosion rate in the salt spray test, one order of magnitude less than that of AerMet 100 and 300M steels. With the increase of chromium content, the polarization resistance becomes larger, the corrosion potential shifts towards the positive direction with a value of 545 mV, and the corrosion current density decreases in electrochemical measures in 3.5wt% NaCl solutions. Because of the higher content of chromium, the ultra high strength stainless steel has a better corrosion resistance than AerMet 100 and 300M steels.展开更多

But a few reports are concerned with these two antibacterial agents for preparation of antibacterial stainless steel (SS). The antibacterial properties and corrosion resistance of AISI 420 stainless steel implanted by silver and copper ions were investigated. Due to the cooperative antibacterial effect of silver and copper ions, the Ag/Cu implanted SS showed excellent antibacterial activities against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) at a total implantation dose of 2~ 1017 ions/cm2. Electrochemical polarization curves revealed that the corrosion resistance of Ag/Cu implanted SS was slightly enhanced as compared with that of un-implanted SS, The implanted layer was characterized by X-ray photoelec- tron spectroscopy (XPS). Core level XPS spectra indicate that the implanted silver and copper ions exist in metallic state in the implanted layer.展开更多

Nitride additives and deoxidizer were packed into the stainless steel pipes, and then the stainless steel pipes were welded on the surface of an electrode with low nitrogen content to prepare a compound electrode. Using Si3N4 as a nitrogen alloying source, the silicon contents in the ingots were prone to be out of the specification range, the electric current fluctuated greatly and the surface qualities of the ingots were poor. The surface qualities of the ingots were improved with FeCrN as a nitrogen alloying source. The sound and compact macrostructure ingot with the maximum nitrogen content of 1.21wt% can be obtained. The 18Cr18Mn2Mo0.9N high nitrogen austenitic stainless steel exhibits high strength and good ductility at room temperature. The steel shows typical ductile-brittle transition behavior and excellent pitting corrosion resistance properties.展开更多

The results show that the corrosion rate increases with increasing Cr content in samples subjected to corrosion for 21 d. However, the rust grain size decreases, its specific surface area increases, and it becomes more compact and denser with increasing Cr content, which indicates the enhanced protectivity of the rust. The results of charge transfer resistance(Rct) calculations indicate that higher Cr contents can accelerate the corrosion during the first 7 d and promote the formation of the enhanced protective inner rust after 14 d; the formed protective inner rust is responsible for the greater corrosion resistance during long-term exposure.展开更多

In this paper, the corrosion resistance of two kinds of martensitic cast steels containing chromium in static 303g/L NaOH alkaline solution at 85℃ was studied through polarization and potential-time curves, corrosion weight loss and corrosion morphology analysis. Experimental results showed that protection effect by passive film of cast steel containing Cr was temporary. The low carbon steel without Cr content also exhibited chemical passivity in the same solution. The corrosion mode of the tested Cr-containing cast steel was composed of active dissolving corrosion and caustic embrittlement cracking. Dissolving corrosion was the primary mechanism for the induced weight loss, while severe caustic embrittlement cracking was secondary. With the increase of chromium content in the cast steel, the tendency of the caustic embrittlement cracking decreased, while the active dissolving corrosion increased.展开更多

文摘A series of high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels were successfully developed with a pressurized electroslag remelting furnace. The steel shows typical ductile-brittle transition behavior and excellent pitting corrosion resistance properties.

文摘The cathodic reaction mechanisms in CO2 corrosion of low-Cr steels were investigated by potentiodynamic polarization and galvanostatic measurements.Distinct but different dominant cathodic reactions were observed at different p H levels. At the higher p H level(p H>~5),H2 CO3 reduction was the dominant cathodic reaction. The reaction was under activation control. At the lower pH level(pH<~3.5),H+reduction became the dominant one and the reaction was under diffusion control. In the intermediate area, there was a transition region leading from one cathodic reaction to another. The measured electrochemical impedance spectrum corresponded to the proposed cathodic reaction mechanisms.
文摘Based on theoretical analysis about local strain, strain rate and dissolving rate at crack tip, the corrosion fatigue crack growth rate of steels ZG20SiMn and SM50B-Zc in fresh water and 3.5% NaCl solution were measured experimentally, and the PH and electrode potential within crack were also measured continuously along with crack propagating. It showed that the increase of crack growth rate, caused by both decreasing frequency and raising stress ratio, was mainly accelerated by hydrogen embrittlement.
文摘Atmospheric corrosion of 304 and 316 stainless steels was studied by field exposure test, in which rain water was collected and analyzed by atomic absorption spectroscope (AAS). Emphasis was put on the dissolution of chromium and nickel from the stainless steels by atmospheric corrosion and rain runoff. AAS analyses shows that the amounts of yearly chromium and nickel dissolution were less than 150ng/cm 2 and 50ng/cm 2 respectively for both 304 and 316 stainless steels. XPS analysis reveals the marked Cr enrichment on the 316 stainless steel after one year field exposure. SEM shows the morphology of corrosion pits on the steel surfaces.
文摘Base metals of domestic pipeline steels were used to study the effect of Mn on corrosion properties of SSCC(Sulfide Stress Corrosion Cracking), and welds were carried out to study the effect of MnS on corrosion properties of HIC (Hydrogen Induced Cracking) both in solutions with wet hydrogen sulfide(H_2S). They were respectively conducted by referring to the standards of SSCC and HIC. Testing results revealed that with the increase of content Mn, the resistance of SSCC will be decreased, from the point of metallurgic view, and it is Mn element not C element to lead to the testing results of SSCC. Meanwhile, even under the condition without inclusions MnS, HIC in welds still occurred. That is to say, MnS is not necessary for HIC, the presence of local banded structures in which Mn and P are inclined to aggregate cause to the phenomena of HIC.
文摘The influence of Cr on the initial corrosion behavior of low-alloy steels exposed to a CO2–O2–H2S–SO2 wet–dry corrosion environment was investigated using weight-loss measurements, scanning electron microscopy, N2 adsorption tests, X-ray diffraction analysis, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show that the corrosion rate increases with increasing Cr content in samples subjected to corrosion for 21 d. However, the rust grain size decreases, its specific surface area increases, and it becomes more compact and denser with increasing Cr content, which indicates the enhanced protectivity of the rust. The results of charge transfer resistance(Rct) calculations indicate that higher Cr contents can accelerate the corrosion during the first 7 d and promote the formation of the enhanced protective inner rust after 14 d; the formed protective inner rust is responsible for the greater corrosion resistance during long-term exposure.
文摘Duplex stainless steels(DSSs)used in subsea structures and desalination industries require high corrosion and erosion resistance as well as excellent mechanical properties. The newly introduced cast duplex grade ASTM A8907 A has a unique composition and is expected to have a much better resistance to corrosion and erosion compared with the super-duplex grades 5 A and 6 A.This work is a comparative study of the mechanical properties, corrosion, and erosion-corrosion resistance of super-duplex grades 5 A and 6 A and the hyper-duplex grade 7 A.The three DSSs exhibited equiaxial austenite islands in the ferrite matrix and balanced phase ratios. The hardness of the grade 7 A was nearly 15%higher than those of the super-duplex grades, which is attributed to the effect of the higher contents of W and Mn in 7 A.The impact toughness of grade 7 A was found to be lower than those of the super-duplex grades due to the carbide precipitation resulting from the partial substitution of Mo with W.The oxide layer strengthening effect of rare earth elements and the higher pitting resistance equivalent number(PREN)of grade7 A resulted in higher corrosion resistance. The harder and more passive grade 7 A showed a 35%lower material loss during erosion-corrosion.

文摘The atmospheric corrosion behavior of new-type weathering steels(WSs)was comparatively studied, and the effects of Nb and Sb during corrosion were clarified in detail through field exposure and characterization. The results showed that the addition of Nb and Sb played positive roles in corrosion resistance, but there was a clear difference between these two elements.Nb addition slightly improved the rust property of conventional WS but could not inhibit the electrochemical process. In contrast,Sb addition significantly improved the corrosion resistance from the aspects of electrochemistry and rust layer.Compared with only 0.06wt%Nb,the combination of 0.05wt%Sb and 0.06wt%Nb could better optimize the rust structure, accelerate the formation of a high proportion of dense and protectiveα-FeOOH,repel the invasion of Cl^(−),and retard the localized acidification at the bottom of the pit.

文摘Copper has long been utilized as a disinfectant for bacteria, but its impact on microbial communities attached to the steel surface in seawater remains unknown. In the present study,3 mooring chain steels of different copper contents are subjected to a 3-month marine field exposure, and the corrosion rate increases in the order of BR5 steel(without copper)<BR5 CuH steel(0.8%copper)<BR5 CuL steel(0.4%copper).The microbial community results show that copper introduction does not result in an obvious change in microbial quantity, but it alters the diversity, richness, and structure of microbial communities due to the variation in copper-resistance of different species.BR5 CuH steel holds microbial communities with the highest percentage of some well-known corrosive microbes including sulfate-reducing bacteria, sulfuroxidizing bacteria, and iron-oxidizing bacteria, but possesses the lowest community diversity/richness owing to the toxicity of copper. The microbial community diversity/richness is stimulated by the low-copper content of BR5 CuL steel, and this steel also carries an intermediate proportion of such corrosive bacteria. Both well-known corrosive bacteria and microbial community diversity/richness seem to be involved in the corrosion acceleration of copper-bearing mooring chain steels.

文摘A typical hot concentrated alkaline corrosion environment exists in alumina metallurgical industry, so that steel materials with outstanding alkaline corrosion resistance are strongly demanded for its processing equipment. With the increase of chromium content in the cast steel, the tendency of the caustic embrittlement cracking decreased, while the active dissolving corrosion increased.
