This work constructed a machine learning(ML)model to predict the atmospheric corrosion rate of low-alloy steels(LAS).The material properties of LAS,environmental factors, and exposure time were used as the input, while the corrosion rate as the output.6 dif-ferent ML algorithms were used to construct the proposed model.Through optimization and filtering, the eXtreme gradient boosting(XG-Boost)model exhibited good corrosion rate prediction accuracy. The features of material properties were then transformed into atomic and physical features using the proposed property transformation approach, and the dominant descriptors that affected the corrosion rate were filtered using the recursive feature elimination(RFE)as well as XGBoost methods. The established ML models exhibited better predic-tion performance and generalization ability via property transformation descriptors. In addition, the SHapley additive exPlanations(SHAP)method was applied to analyze the relationship between the descriptors and corrosion rate. The results showed that the property transformation model could effectively help with analyzing the corrosion behavior, thereby significantly improving the generalization ability of corrosion rate prediction models. 展开更多

The atmospheric corrosion monitoring(ACM)technique has been widely employed to track the real-time corrosion behavior of metal materials. However, limited studies have applied ACM to the corrosion protection properties of organic coatings. This study compared a bare epoxy coating with one containing zinc phosphate corrosion inhibitors, both applied on ACM sensors,to observe their corrosion protection properties over time.Coatings with artificial damage via scratches were exposed to immersion and alternating dry and wet environments, which allowed for monitoring galvanic corrosion currents in real-time.Throughout the corrosion tests, the ACM currents of the zinc phosphate/epoxy coating were considerably lower than those of the blank epoxy coating. The trend in ACM current variations closely matched the results obtained from regular electrochemical tests and surface analysis. This alignment highlights the potential of the ACM technique in evaluating the corrosion protection capabilities of organic coatings.Compared with the blank epoxy coating, the zinc phosphate/epoxy coating showed much-decreased ACM current values that confirmed the effective inhibition of zinc phosphate against steel corrosion beneath the damaged coating. 展开更多

Traditional 3Ni weathering steel cannot completely meet the requirements for offshore engineering development, resulting in the design of novel 3Ni steel with the addition of microalloy elements such as Mn or Nb for strength enhancement becoming a trend. The stress-assisted corrosion behavior of a novel designed high-strength 3Ni steel was investigated in the current study using the corrosion big data method. The information on the corrosion process was recorded using the galvanic corrosion current monitoring method. The gradi-ent boosting decision tree(GBDT)machine learning method was used to mine the corrosion mechanism, and the importance of the struc-ture factor was investigated.Field exposure tests were conducted to verify the calculated results using the GBDT method. Results indic-ated that the GBDT method can be effectively used to study the influence of structural factors on the corrosion process of 3Ni steel.Dif-ferent mechanisms for the addition of Mn and Cu to the stress-assisted corrosion of 3Ni steel suggested that Mn and Cu have no obvious effect on the corrosion rate of non-stressed 3Ni steel during the early stage of corrosion. When the corrosion reached a stable state, the in-crease in Mn element content increased the corrosion rate of 3Ni steel, while Cu reduced this rate.In the presence of stress, the increase in Mn element content and Cu addition can inhibit the corrosion process. The corrosion law of outdoor-exposed 3Ni steel is consistent with the law based on corrosion big data technology, verifying the reliability of the big data evaluation method and data prediction model selection. 展开更多

Pitting corrosion is harmful during bridge construction, which will lead to uneven roughness of steel surfaces and reduce the thickness of steel.Hence, the effect of pitting corrosion on the mechanical properties of cold-formed thin-walled steel stub columns is studied, and the empirical formulas are established through regression fitting to predict the ultimate load of web and flange under pitting corrosion. In detail, the failure modes and load-displacement curves of specimens with different locations, area ratios, and depths are obtained through a large number of non-linear finite element analysis. As for the specimens with pitting corrosion on the web,all the specimens are subject to local buckling failure, and the failure mode will not change with pitting corrosion, but the failure location will change with pitting corrosion location;the size, location, and area ratio of pitting corrosion have little influence on the ultimate load of cold-formed thin-walled steel short columns, but the loss rate of pitting corrosion section area has a greater impact on the ultimate bearing capacity. As for the specimen with flange pitting corrosion, the location and area ratio of pitting corrosion have less influence on the ultimate load of cold-formed thin-walled steel short columns, and the section area loss rate has greater influence on the ultimate bearing capacity;the impact of web pitting corrosion on the ultimate load is greater than that of flange pitting corrosion under the same condition of pitting corrosion section area. The prediction formulas of limit load which are suitable for pitting corrosion of web and flange are established, which can provide a reference for performance evaluation of corroded cold-formed thin-walled steel. 展开更多

The objective of this study is to test the zinc coating of the steel plate. A literature review was conducted to identify the zinc coating techniques, and the companies that can provide different coating service was identified. A salt fog chamber was built that was in compliance with the ANSI B117 code, and the steel plates that were coated by the identified companies were tested using the salt fog chamber. The results indicated that the coating technique that had the best performance in preventing corrosion was the Greenkote plates with passivation. The galvanized option had the roughest coating layer, and it was the most reactive in the salt water solution. This makes it non-ideal for the dynamic rail environment because the increased friction of the plate could damage the supports, especially during extreme temperatures that would cause the rail to expand or contract. Greenkote with Phosphate and ArmorGalv also provided increased corrosion prevention with a smooth, strong finish, but it had more rust on the surface area than the Greenkote with ELU passivation. The ArmorGalv sample had more rust on the surface area than the Greenkote samples. This may not be a weakness in the ArmorGalv process;rather, it likely was the result of this particular sample not having the added protection of a colored coating. 展开更多

A significant portion of the sum spent by asset managers in maintaining steel bridge assets is dedicated to corrosion management of aging steel bridges, particularly very old ones.Managing corrosion of such bridges poses unique challenges owing to the inherent complexities associated with design, material, fabrication and construction.Steel bridges have come a long way from being constructed of cast iron and wrought iron in the early days to modern day low carbon high strength steel bridges.During inception of steel bridges in Australia, wrought iron was used extensively in deck structure whereas piers were generally constructed of cast iron. Some of these piers have been found to be suffering from graphitisation.Even though CP(cathodic protection)has been proven to enhance the life of steel and reinforced concrete structures by preventing any further corrosion, there is little evidence to validate its success in preventing graphitisation of cast iron piers.Early steel bridges in NSW(New South Wales)were constructed with a complex geometry involving riveted cellular box girders, later simplified to riveted trusses. For any rehabilitation work to begin, the challenges start at the investigation stage.Due to cellular box type construction, thorough inspection and examination of inside of the boxes is generally not feasible even with the use of the available state-of-the-art investigation techniques. Some of the steel bridges in service in NSW are more than 120 years old.Any rehabilitation effort for such bridges faces challenges in terms of design methods to be used, availability of compatible material, selection of an appropriate method of joining e.g.welding or bolting, selection of a compatible protective coating, accessibility for the work to be carried out, etc. This paper describes common forms of corrosion observed on bridges. It demonstrates the difficulties in maintaining old bridges using two case studies. 展开更多

Pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion behaviors of high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels (HNSS) were investigated by electrochemical and immersion testing methods in chloride solution, respectively. The chemical constitution and composition in the depth of passive films formed on HNSS were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS). HNSS has excellent pitting and crevice corrosion resistance compared to 316L stainless steel. With increasing the nitrogen content in steels, pitting potentials and critical pitting temperature (CPT) increase, and the maximum, average pit depths and average weight loss decrease. The CPT of HNSS is correlated with the alloying element content through the measure of alloying for resistance to corrosion (MARC). The MARC can be expressed as an equation of CPT=2.55MARC-29. XPS results show that HNSS exhibiting excellent corrosion resistance is attributed to the enrichment of nitrogen on the surface of passive films, which forms ammonium ions increasing the local pH value and facilitating repassivation, and the synergistic effects of molybdenum and nitrogen. 展开更多

The effects of chromium on the corrosion and the electrochemical behaviors of ultra high strength steels were studied by the salt spray test and electrochemical methods. The results show that ultra high strength steels remain martensite structures and have anodic dissolution characteristic with an increase of chromium content. There is no typical passive region on the polarization curves of an ultra high strength stainless steel, AerMet 100 steel, and 300M steel. However, chromium improves the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel remarkably. It has the slowest corrosion rate in the salt spray test, one order of magnitude less than that of AerMet 100 and 300M steels. With the increase of chromium content, the polarization resistance becomes larger, the corrosion potential shifts towards the positive direction with a value of 545 mV, and the corrosion current density decreases in electrochemical measures in 3.5wt% NaCl solutions. Because of the higher content of chromium, the ultra high strength stainless steel has a better corrosion resistance than AerMet 100 and 300M steels. 展开更多

But a few reports are concerned with these two antibacterial agents for preparation of antibacterial stainless steel (SS). The antibacterial properties and corrosion resistance of AISI 420 stainless steel implanted by silver and copper ions were investigated. Due to the cooperative antibacterial effect of silver and copper ions, the Ag/Cu implanted SS showed excellent antibacterial activities against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) at a total implantation dose of 2~ 1017 ions/cm2. Electrochemical polarization curves revealed that the corrosion resistance of Ag/Cu implanted SS was slightly enhanced as compared with that of un-implanted SS, The implanted layer was characterized by X-ray photoelec- tron spectroscopy (XPS). Core level XPS spectra indicate that the implanted silver and copper ions exist in metallic state in the implanted layer. 展开更多

A series of high nitrogen austenitic stainless steels were successfully developed with a pressurized electroslag remelting furnace. Nitride additives and deoxidizer were packed into the stainless steel pipes, and then the stainless steel pipes were welded on the surface of an electrode with low nitrogen content to prepare a compound electrode. Using Si3N4 as a nitrogen alloying source, the silicon contents in the ingots were prone to be out of the specification range, the electric current fluctuated greatly and the surface qualities of the ingots were poor. The surface qualities of the ingots were improved with FeCrN as a nitrogen alloying source. The sound and compact macrostructure ingot with the maximum nitrogen content of 1.21wt% can be obtained. The 18Cr18Mn2Mo0.9N high nitrogen austenitic stainless steel exhibits high strength and good ductility at room temperature. The steel shows typical ductile-brittle transition behavior and excellent pitting corrosion resistance properties. 展开更多

The influence of Cr on the initial corrosion behavior of low-alloy steels exposed to a CO2–O2–H2S–SO2 wet–dry corrosion environment was investigated using weight-loss measurements, scanning electron microscopy, N2 adsorption tests, X-ray diffraction analysis, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results show that the corrosion rate increases with increasing Cr content in samples subjected to corrosion for 21 d. However, the rust grain size decreases, its specific surface area increases, and it becomes more compact and denser with increasing Cr content, which indicates the enhanced protectivity of the rust. The results of charge transfer resistance(Rct) calculations indicate that higher Cr contents can accelerate the corrosion during the first 7 d and promote the formation of the enhanced protective inner rust after 14 d; the formed protective inner rust is responsible for the greater corrosion resistance during long-term exposure. 展开更多

Duplex stainless steels(DSSs)used in subsea structures and desalination industries require high corrosion and erosion resistance as well as excellent mechanical properties. The newly introduced cast duplex grade ASTM A8907 A has a unique composition and is expected to have a much better resistance to corrosion and erosion compared with the super-duplex grades 5 A and 6 A.This work is a comparative study of the mechanical properties, corrosion, and erosion-corrosion resistance of super-duplex grades 5 A and 6 A and the hyper-duplex grade 7 A.The three DSSs exhibited equiaxial austenite islands in the ferrite matrix and balanced phase ratios. The hardness of the grade 7 A was nearly 15%higher than those of the super-duplex grades, which is attributed to the effect of the higher contents of W and Mn in 7 A.The impact toughness of grade 7 A was found to be lower than those of the super-duplex grades due to the carbide precipitation resulting from the partial substitution of Mo with W.The oxide layer strengthening effect of rare earth elements and the higher pitting resistance equivalent number(PREN)of grade7 A resulted in higher corrosion resistance. The harder and more passive grade 7 A showed a 35%lower material loss during erosion-corrosion. 展开更多

Copper has long been utilized as a disinfectant for bacteria, but its impact on microbial communities attached to the steel surface in seawater remains unknown. In the present study,3 mooring chain steels of different copper contents are subjected to a 3-month marine field exposure, and the corrosion rate increases in the order of BR5 steel(without copper)<BR5 CuH steel(0.8%copper)<BR5 CuL steel(0.4%copper).The microbial community results show that copper introduction does not result in an obvious change in microbial quantity, but it alters the diversity, richness, and structure of microbial communities due to the variation in copper-resistance of different species.BR5 CuH steel holds microbial communities with the highest percentage of some well-known corrosive microbes including sulfate-reducing bacteria, sulfuroxidizing bacteria, and iron-oxidizing bacteria, but possesses the lowest community diversity/richness owing to the toxicity of copper. The microbial community diversity/richness is stimulated by the low-copper content of BR5 CuL steel, and this steel also carries an intermediate proportion of such corrosive bacteria. Both well-known corrosive bacteria and microbial community diversity/richness seem to be involved in the corrosion acceleration of copper-bearing mooring chain steels. 展开更多

A typical hot concentrated alkaline corrosion environment exists in alumina metallurgical industry, so that steel materials with outstanding alkaline corrosion resistance are strongly demanded for its processing equipment. In this paper, the corrosion resistance of two kinds of martensitic cast steels containing chromium in static 303g/L NaOH alkaline solution at 85℃ was studied through polarization and potential-time curves, corrosion weight loss and corrosion morphology analysis. Experimental results showed that protection effect by passive film of cast steel containing Cr was temporary. The low carbon steel without Cr content also exhibited chemical passivity in the same solution. The corrosion mode of the tested Cr-containing cast steel was composed of active dissolving corrosion and caustic embrittlement cracking. Dissolving corrosion was the primary mechanism for the induced weight loss, while severe caustic embrittlement cracking was secondary. With the increase of chromium content in the cast steel, the tendency of the caustic embrittlement cracking decreased, while the active dissolving corrosion increased. 展开更多
