An acoustic dipole radiation model for magnetoacoustic tomography with magnetic induction (MAT-MI) is pro- posed, based on the analyses of one-dimensional tissue vibration, three-dimensional acoustic dipole radiation and acoustic waveform detection with a planar piston transducer. The collected waveforms provide information about the conductiv- ity boundaries in various vibration intensities and phases due to the acoustic dipole radiation pattern. Combined with the simplified back projection algorithm, the conductivity configuration of the measured layer in terms of shape and size can be reconstructed with obvious border stripes. The numerical simulation is performed for a two-layer cylindrical phantom model and it is also verified by the experimental results of MAT-MI for a tissue-like sample phantom. The proposed model suggests a potential application of conductivity differentiation and provides a universal basis for the further study of conductivity reconstruction for MAT-MI. 展开更多

Magnetic induction tomography(MIT) is one of the newest industrial process imaging techniques.Main industrial applications of the MIT imaging are in high conductive flow imaging. However, recently it has been shown that the MIT may be useful for low conductive process imaging. This paper presents a cost effective hardware design for MIT in industrial applications, called Bath-MKI industrial MIT system. The system comprises 8 inductor coils and has the possibility of expansion to 16 coils. The excitation signals and the measured voltages are generated and measured using a LabView based system. Two 16 by 1 multiplexers are used to select between the coils.Measurements, excitation and multiplexing are all controlled by a National Instrument(NI) USB based DAQ:USB-6259 and a signal generator.Using the same electronics, the prototype is tested with two different coil arrays;one is a small scale ferrite core coil and one larger scale air cored coil.Experimental image reconstruction results are shown using both small scale and large scale coil arrays. 展开更多

Based on the acoustic radiation theory of a dipole source, the influence of the transducer reception pattern is studied for magnetoacoustic tomography with magnetic induction(MAT-MI). Numerical studies are conducted to simulate acoustic pressures, waveforms, and reconstructed images with unidirectional, omnidirectional, and strong directional transducers. With the analyses of equivalent and projection sources, the influences of the model dimension and the layer effect are qualitatively analyzed to evaluate the performance of MAT-MI. Three-dimensional simulation studies show that the strong directional transducer with a large radius can reduce the influences of equivalent sources, projection sources, and the layer effect effectively, resulting in enhanced pressure and improved image contrast, which is beneficial for boundary pressure extraction in conductivity reconstruction. The reconstructed conductivity contrast images present the conductivity boundaries as stripes with different contrasts and polarities, representing the values and directions of the conductivity changes of the scanned layer. The favorable results provide solid evidence for transducer selection and suggest potential practical applications of MAT-MI in biomedical imaging. 展开更多

Magneto–acoustic tomography with magnetic induction(MAT-MI) is a multiphysics coupled imaging technique that is combined with electrical impedance tomography and ultrasound imaging. In order to study the influence of adding magnetic nanoparticles as a contrast agent for MAT-MI on its physical process, firstly, we analyze and compare the electromagnetic and acoustical properties of MAT-MI theoretically before and after adding magnetic nanoparticles, and then construct a two-dimensional(2 D) planar model. Under the guidance of space-time separation theory, we determine the reasonable simulation conditions and solve the electromagnetic field and sound field physical processes in the two modes by using the finite element method. The magnetic flux density, sound pressure distribution, and related one-dimensional(1 D), 2 D, and three-dimensional(3 D) images are obtained. Finally, we make a qualitative and quantitative analysis based on the theoretical and simulation results. The research results show that the peak time of the time item separated from the sound source has a corresponding relationship with the peak time of the sound pressure signal. At this moment, MAMPTMI produces larger sound pressure signals, and the sound pressure distribution of the MAMPT-MI is more uniform, which facilitates the detection and completion of sound source reconstruction. The research results may lay the foundation for the MAT-MI of magnetically responsive nanoparticle in subsequent experiments and even clinical applications. 展开更多

We have developed a new three dimensional (3-D) conductivity imaging approach and have used it to detect human brain conductivity changes corresponding to acute cerebral stroke. The proposed Magnetic Resonance Electrical Impedance Tomography (MREIT) approach is based on the J-Substitution algorithm and is expanded to imaging 3-D subject conductivity distribution changes. Computer simulation studies have been conducted to evaluate the present MREIT imaging approach. Simulations of both types of cerebral stroke, hemorrhagic stroke and ischemic stroke, were performed on a four-sphere head model. Simulation results showed that the correlation coefficient (CC) and relative error (RE) between target and estimated conductivity distributions were 0.9245±0.0068 and 8.9997%±0.0084%, for hemorrhagic stroke, and 0.6748±0.0197 and 8.8986%±0.0089%, for ischemic stroke, when the SNR (signal-to-noise radio) of added GWN (Gaussian White Noise) was 40. The convergence characteristic was also evaluated according to the changes of CC and RE with different iteration numbers. The CC increases and RE decreases monotonously with the increasing number of iterations. The present simulation results show the feasibility of the proposed 3-D MREIT approach in hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke detection and suggest that the method may become a useful alternative in clinical diagnosis of acute cerebral stroke in humans. 展开更多

As a kind of multi-physics imaging approach integrating the advantages of electrical impedance tomography and ul- trasound imaging with the improved spatial resolution and image contrast, magneto-acoustic tomography with magnetic induction (MAT-MI) is demonstrated to have the capability of electrical impedance contrast imaging for biological tissues with conductivity differences. By being detected with a strong directional transducer, abrupt pressure change is proved to be generated by the gradient of the induced Lorentz force along the force direction at conductivity boundary. A simplified boundary normal pressure (BNP)-based conductivity reconstruction algorithm is proposed and the formula for conductivity distribution inside the object with the clear physical meaning of pressure derivative, is derived. Numerical simulations of acoustic pressure and conductivity reconstruction are conducted based on a 2-layer eccentric cylindrical phantom model using Hilbert transform. The reconstructed two-dimensional conductivity images accord well with the model, thus success- fully making up the deficiency of only imaging conductivity boundary in traditional MAT-MI. The proposed method is also demonstrated to have a spatial resolution of one wavelength. This study provides a new method of reconstructing accurate electrical conductivity and suggests the potential applications of MAT-MI in imaging biological tissues with conductivity difference. 展开更多

Imaging has a central role in the context of focal therapy(FT)for prostate cancer(PCa).Prostate-specific membrane antigen(PSMA)positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging(PET/MRI)is a novel imaging modality that combines the morpho-functional information of MRI with the molecular characterization of PET.Some papers reported the potential advantages of PSMA PET/MRI in different clinical scenarios.Limited evidence on PSMA PET/MRI is available in the setting of FT.PSMA PET/MRI can be an effective imaging modality for detecting primary PCa and seems to provide accurate local staging of primary PCa.PSMA PET/MRI also shows high performance for restaging and detecting tumor recurrence. The higher soft-tissue contrast and the reduction of ionizing radiation are the main advantages reported in the literature compared to PET/computed tomography.PSMA PET/MRI could represent a turning point in the management of patients with PCa in the context of FT.Further studies are needed to confirm its applications in this specific clinical setting. 展开更多

BACKGROUND: The various origins of obstructive jaundice make the diagnosis of the disease difficult. This study was undertaken to evaluate the role of 18F-FDG PET/CT in differentiating malignant from benign origins of obstructive jaundice and to quantify the added value of 18F-FDG PET/CT over conventional imaging(enhanced CT and/or MRI).METHODS: Eighty-five patients with obstructive jaundice who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT within 2 weeks after enhanced CT and/or MRI were reviewed retrospectively. All 18F-FDG PET/CT images were independently evaluated by 2 nuclear medicine physicians who were unaware of other imaging data; differences were resolved by consensus of the physicians. All conventional imaging interpretations, according to the medical records, were reviewed by 2 radiologists to determine the potential value. Final diagnoses were based on histological or surgical findings.RESULTS: Sixty-six patients were diagnosed with malignancies, and 19 patients with benign lesions. The maximum standardized uptake values for malignant and benign lesions causing biliary obstruction were 8.2±4.4 and 4.0±5.0, respectively(P〈0.05). The sensitivity, specificity, and overall accuracy for differentiating malignant from benign origins with 18F-FDG PET/CT were 86.4%(57/66), 73.7%(14/19), and 83.5%(71/85), respectively. 18F-FDG PET/CT in conjunction with conventional imaging changed the sensitivity, specificity, and overall accuracy of conventional imaging alone from 75.8%(50/66) to 95.5%(63/66)(P〈0.05), 68.4%(13/19) to 57.9%(11/19)(P〉0.05), and 74.1%(63/85) to 87.1%(74/85)(P〈0.05), respectively.CONCLUSIONS: 18F-FDG PET/CT is of great value in differentiating malignant from benign origins of obstructive jaundice and is a useful adjuvant to conventional imaging. 18F-FDG PET/CT should be recommended for further etiological clarification. 展开更多

Various mucin-producing neoplasms originate in different abdominal and pelvic organs.Mucinous neoplasms differ from non-mucinous neoplasms because of the differences in clinical outcome and imaging appearance.Mucinous carcinoma,in which at least 50%of the tumor is composed of large pools of extracellular mucin and columns of malignant cells,is associated with a worse prognosis.Signet ring cell carcinoma is characterized by large intracytoplasmic mucin vacuoles that expand in the malignant cells with the nucleus displaced to the periphery. Its prognosis is also generally poor.In contrast, intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the bile duct and pancreas, which is characterized by proliferation of ductal epithelium and variable mucin production, has a better prognosis than other malignancies in the pancreaticobiliary tree.Imaging modalities play a critical role in differentiating mucinous from non-mucinous neoplasms.Due to high water content, mucin has a similar appearance to water on ultrasound(US) ,computed tomography(CT) ,and magnetic resonance imaging, except when thick and proteinaceous, and then it tends to be hypoechoic with fine internal echoes or have complex echogenicity on US,hyperdense on CT,and hyperintense on T1and hypointense on T2-weighted images, compared to water. Therefore, knowledge of characteristic mucin imaging features is helpful to diagnose various mucinproducing neoplastic conditions and to facilitate appropriate treatment. 展开更多

Objective: To prospectively compare the discriminative capacity of dynamic contrast enhanced-magnetic resonance imaging(DCE-MRI) with that of^18F-fluorodeoxyglucose(^18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography(PET/CT) in the differentiation of malignant and benign solitary pulmonary nodules(SPNs).Methods: Forty-nine patients with SPNs were included in this prospective study. Thirty-two of the patients had malignant SPNs, while the other 17 had benign SPNs. All these patients underwent DCE-MRI and ^18F-FDG PET/CT examinations. The quantitative MRI pharmacokinetic parameters, including the trans-endothelial transfer constant(K^trans), redistribution rate constant(Kep), and fractional volume(Ve), were calculated using the Extended-Tofts Linear two-compartment model. The ^18F-FDG PET/CT parameter, maximum standardized uptake value(SUV(max)), was also measured. Spearman's correlations were calculated between the MRI pharmacokinetic parameters and the SUV(max) of each SPN. These parameters were statistically compared between the malignant and benign nodules. Receiver operating characteristic(ROC) analyses were used to compare the diagnostic capability between the DCE-MRI and ^18F-FDG PET/CT indexes. Results: Positive correlations were found between K^trans and SUV(max), and between K(ep) and SUV(max)(P〈0.05).There were significant differences between the malignant and benign nodules in terms of the K^trans, K(ep) and SUV(max) values(P〈0.05). The areas under the ROC curve(AUC) of K^trans) K(ep) and SUV(max) between the malignant and benign nodules were 0.909, 0.838 and 0.759, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity in differentiating malignant from benign SPNs were 90.6% and 82.4% for K^trans; 87.5% and 76.5% for K(ep); and 75.0% and 70.6%for SUV(max), respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of K^trans and K(ep) were higher than those of SUV(max), but there was no significant difference between them(P〉0.05).Conclusions: DCE-MRI can be used to differentiate between benign and malignant SPNs and has the advantage of being radiation free. 展开更多

Magnetoacoustic tomography with magnetic induction(MAT-MI),as a new kind of in-vivo imaging method, has potential application value in interstitial fluid research. In this paper,we propose the application of MAT-MI with liquid metal serving as a tracer of the interstitial structure to study its fluid behavior, and use it to implement the positional imaging of the spatial distribution of liquid metal.Owing to the particularity of liquid metal magnetoacoustic pressure(MAP)signals,we propose an envelope analysis method to extract the rising edge of the amplitude envelope of the detected waveform as effective position data. And for the first time,we propose the method of superpositing pixel matrix to achieve the position imaging of liquid metal. Finally, the positional imaging of the liquid metal sample embedded in the gel is achieved to have relatively accurate results. This study provides a method of effectively extracting data and implementing the position imaging for liquid metal in the interstitial structure in the frame of MAT-MI. 展开更多

AIM: To identify a practical approach for preoperative decision-making in patients with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) of the pancreas. METHODS: Between March 1999 and November 2006, the clinical characteristics, pathological data and computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging (CT/MRI) of 54 IPMNs cases were retrieved and analyzed. The relationships between the above data and decision-making for pancreatic resection were analyzed using SPSS 13.0 software. Univariate analysis of risk factors for malignant or invasive IPMNs was performed with regard to the following variables: carcinoembryonic antigen, carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) and the characteristics from CT/MRI images. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis for pancreatic resection was performed using significant factors from the univariate analysis. RESULTS: CT/MRI images, including main and mixed duct IPMNs, tumor size > 30 mm or a solid component appearance in the lesion, and preoperative serum CA19-9 > 37 U/mL had good predictive value for determining pancreatic resection (P < 0.05), but with limitations. Combining the above factors (CT/MRI images and CA19-9) improved the accuracy and sensitivity for determining pancreatic resection in IPMNs. Using ROC analysis, the area under the curve reached 0.893 (P<0.01, 95%CI: 0.763-1.023), with a sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of 95.2%, 83.3%, 95.2% and 83.3%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Combining preoperative CT/MRI images and CA19-9 level may provide useful information for surgical decision-making in IPMNs. 展开更多

To improve stability and performance of the signal source and sweeping detection,as well as to extract abundant and reliable signal, the direct digital synthesis technology was employed to design the generator of the source which formed sweeping frequencies of sine wave output from 1 to 20 MHz.The planar spiral coil was con-nected as an amplitude modulation circuit. The same coil adopted differential architecture for signal detection and extraction. The MC1595 was utilized to compose a phase detector in which difference of phases varies with the change of frequencies.A low pass filter was designed to filter the carry waves of the sweeping source.Thereby the system gained abundant data and its stability was improved.Further, the spatial resolution of the system was enhanced. All of the above favors the use of software in the magnetic focused conductivity tomography system(MFCT)to reconstruct the image of conductivity within the human body. 展开更多

Sonography revealed a hypoechoic mass surrounded the axillary artery and brachial artery. No obvious capsule was demonstrated.CT showed a soft-tissue mass with some calcifications and peripheral ring-like enhancement. The MRI indicated a mass with mainly intermediate signal intensity on T1-weighted imagine and intermediate signal intensity on T2-weighted imagine. The diagnosis was confirmed by histopathologic examination after surgery. There are some correlations of these imaging features with its histopathologic characters. 展开更多

Despite great efforts in experimental and clinical research, the prognosis of pancreatic cancer (PC) has not changed significantly for decades. Detection of pre-invasive lesions or early-stage PC with small resectable cancers in asymptomatic individuals remains one of the most promising approaches to substantially improve the overall outcome of PC. Therefore, screening programs have been proposed to identify curable lesions especially in individuals with a familial or genetic predisposition for PC. In this regard, Canto et al recently contributed an important article comparing computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and endoscopic ultrasound for the screening of 216 asymptomatic high-risk individuals (HRI). Pancreatic lesions were detected in 92 of 216 asymptomatic HRI (42.6%). The high diagnostic yield in this study raises several questions that need to be answered of which two will be discussed in detail in this commentary: First: which imaging test should be performed? Second and most importantly: what are we doing with incidentally detected pancreatic lesions? Which ones can be observed and which ones need to be resected? 展开更多

Considering the development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) under ultrahigh magnetic field (〉3 T), the exploration of novel contrast agents (CAs) for ultrahigh field MRI is urgently needed. Herein, we report polyethyleneimine (PEI)-coated TbF3 nanoparticles (NPs), which were synthesized by a facile solvothermal method, as potential dual-mode CAs for ultrahigh field MRI and X-ray computed tomography (CT). Owing to their strong paramagnetism, the TbF3 NPs showed excellent transverse relaxivity (395.77 mM-l.s-1) and negligible longitudinal relaxivity under an ultrahigh magnetic field (7 T) with a great potential as a T2-weighted MRI contrast agent. Furthermore, by comparison with the clinically used CT CAs (iohexol), the TbF3 NPs showed superior X-ray attenuation ability. The practical application for T2-weighted MRI and CT imaging was demonstrated with an animal model. Moreover, cell cytotoxicity and in vivo toxicity assessments implied the low toxicity of TbF3 NPs. In summary the above results indicate that TbF3 NPs are promising candidates for ultrahigh field MRI and CT dual-mode imaging. 展开更多
