This paper is concerned with a buckling analysis of an embedded nanoplate integrated with magnetoelectroelastic(MEE) layers based on a nonlocal magnetoelectroelasticity theory. A surrounding elastic medium is simulated by the Pasternak foundation that considers both shear and normal loads. The sandwich nanoplate(SNP) consists of a core that is made of metal and two MEE layers on the upper and lower surfaces of the core made of Ba Ti O3/Co Fe2 O4. The refined zigzag theory(RZT) is used to model the SNP subject to both external electric and magnetic potentials. Using an energy method and Hamilton’s principle, the governing motion equations are obtained, and then solved analytically. A detailed parametric study is conducted, concentrating on the combined effects of the small scale parameter, external electric and magnetic loads, thicknesses of MEE layers, mode numbers, and surrounding elastic medium. It is concluded that increasing the small scale parameter decreases the critical buckling loads. 展开更多

For the off-diagonal infinite dimensional Hamiltonian operators, which have at most countable eigenvalues, a necessary and sufficient condition of the eigenfunction systems to be complete in the sense of Cauchy principal value is presented by using the spectral symmetry and new orthogonal relationship of the operators. Moreover, the above result is extended to a more general case. At last, the completeness of eigenfunction systems for the operators arising from the isotropic plane magnetoelectroelastic solids is described to illustrate the effectiveness of the criterion. The whole results offer theoretical guarantee for separation of variables in Hamiltonian system for some mechanics equations. 展开更多

The state-vector equation of magnetoelectroelastic plates was derived from the proposed theorem by performing the variational operations. To lay a theoretical basis of the semi-analytical solution applied with the magnetoelectroelastic plates, the state-vector equation for the discrete element in plane was proposed through the use of the proposed principle. Finally, it is pointed out that the modified H-R mixed variational principle for pure elastic, single piezoelectric or single piezomagnetic bodies are the special cases of the present variational theorem. 展开更多

Then the completeness of the eigenfunction system is proved, which offers a theoretic guarantee of the feasibility of variable separation method based on a Hamiltonian system for isotropic plane magnetoelectroelastic solids. Based on the fundamental equations of magnetoelectroelastic material and the analytic theory, and using the Muskhelishvili-introduced well-known elastic techniques combined with the superposition principle, the closed form solution of the generalized stress field of the interaction between many parallel screw dislocations and a semi-infinite crack in an infinite magnetoelectroelastic solid is obtained, on the assumption that the surface of the crack is impermeable electrically and magnetically. Besides, the Peach-Koehler formula of n parallel screw dislocations is given. Numerical examples show that the generalized stress varies with the position of point z and is related to the material constants. The results indicate that the stress concentration occurs at the dislocation core and the tip of the crack. The result of interaction makes the system stay in a lower energy state. 展开更多

Two types of singularities are obtained: one is the oscillating singularity 1/2±iε, the other is the non-oscillating singularity 1/2±κ. The mechanical,electric and magnetic fields around an elliptical cylinder inclusion are formulated by complex potentials. Inside the inclusion,the strain,electric and magnetic fields are found to be uniform and vary with the shape of the ellipse. When the inclusion is reduced to a crack,along the interface,the strain,electric field strength and magnetic field strength equal the corresponding remote ones,which can be used as the boundary condition. Special cases,such as a rigid and permeable inclusion,a soft and impermeable inclusion,a line inclusion and a crack problem are discussed in detail. 展开更多

This paper discusses electromagnetic boundary conditions on crack faces in magneto- electroelastic materials, where piezoelectric, piezomagnetic and magnetoelectric effects are coupled. A notch of finite thickness in these materials is also addressed. Four idealized electromagnetic boundary conditions assumed for the crack-faces are separately investigated, i.e. (a) electrically and magnetically impermeable (crack-face), (b) electrically impermeable and magnetically permeable, (c) electrically permeable and magnetically impermeable, and (d) electrically and magnetically permeable. The influence of the notch thickness on important parameters, such as the field intensity factors, the energy release rate at the notch tips and the electromagnetic fields inside the notch, are studied and the results are obtained in closed-form. Results under different idealized electromagnetic boundary conditions on the crack-face are compared, and the applicability of these idealized assumptions is discussed. 展开更多

The crack surfaces are subjected to only radial shear impact loading. The Laplace and Hankel transform techniques are employed to reduce the problem to solving a Fredholm integral equation. The dynamic stress intensity factor is obtained and numerically calculated for different layer heights. And the corresponding static solution is given by simple analysis. It is seen that the dynamic stress intensity factor for cracks in a magnetoelectroelastic layer has the same expression as that in a purely elastic material. And the influences of layer height on both the dynamic and static stress intensity factors are insignificant as h/a 〉 2. 展开更多

In symplectic geometry space, which consists of original variables, displacements, electric potential and magnetic potential, and their duality variables, lengthways stress, electric displacement and magnetic induction, the effective methods of separation of variables and symplectic eigenfunction expansion were applied to solve the problem. Then all the eigen-solutions and the eigen-solutions in Jordan form on eigenvalue zero can be given, and their specific physical significations were shown clearly. This theoretical work discovers four new dispersive shear-horizontal (SH) waves propagating in the transversely isotropic piezoelectromagnetic plate of class 6 mm. In this work, the following mechanical, electrical, and magnetic boundary conditions at both the upper and lower free surfaces of the piezoelectromagnetic plate are utilized: the mechanically free surface, continuity of both the electrical and magnetic potentials, and continuity of both the electrical and magnetic inductions. The solutions for the new SH-wave velocities (dispersion relations) are found in explicit forms and then graphically studied. The graphical investigation has soundly illuminated several interesting peculiarities that were also discussed. The piezoelectromagnetic materials, also known as the magnetoelectroelastic media, are famous as smart materials because the electrical subsystem of the materials can interact with the magnetic subsystem via the mechanical subsystem, and vice versa. Therefore, it is very important to know the wave characteristics of such (composite) materials because of possible constitution of new technical devices with a high level of integration. It is obvious that the plate waves can be preferable for further miniaturization of the technical devices and used for the nondestructive testing and evaluation of thin piezoelectromagnetic films. 展开更多

Dramatic Influence of the Magnetoelectric Effect on the Existence of the New SH-SAWs Propagating in Magnetoelectroelastic Composites

This comparative study acquaints the reader with some properties of the eighth and tenth new shear-horizontal surface acoustic waves (SH-SAWs) propagating along the free surface of the magnetoelectroelastic (6 mm) medium. These new nondispersive SH-SAWs cannot exist when the electromagnetic constant α is equal to zero. The piezoelectromagnetic SH bulk acoustic wave and the surface Bleustein-Gulyaev-Melkumyan (BGM) wave are also chosen for comparison. The main problem of this report is the demonstration of the fact that the new waves can propagate slower than the BGM wave. This problem can be very important due to the fact that among the other known SH-SAWs the BGM wave can propagate significantly slower than the corresponding SH bulk acoustic wave. Two new SH-SAWs are analytically and graphically studied in dependence on the electromagnetic constant α. For the graphical study, two (6 mm) composites are used: BaTiO3– CoFe2O4 and PZT-5H–Terfenol-D. For the second composite it is solidly demonstrated that for small values of α, the eighth new SH-SAW cannot exist and its velocity starts with zero at some small threshold value of α rapidly reaching the BGM-wave velocity. This means that a weak magnetoelectric effect can dramatically slow down the speed of either new SH-SAW. As a result, the studied new SH-SAWs can be suitable for creation of new technical devices to sense the magnetoelectric effect. For the analytical study, extreme and inflexion points were evaluated in the velocities’ dependencies on the value of the electromagnetic constant α. 展开更多

The functionally graded material is assumed to be exponential in the thickness direc- tion of the plate. The final governing equations are reduced to an eigensystem by expressing the extended displacements in terms of two-dimensional Fourier series. Using the propagator matrix method, the exact solutions of the magnetic, electric and mechanical fields of sandwich nanoplates with couple-stress effect and under the surface loads are derived. Numerical examples for two functionally graded sandwich plates made of piezoelectric BaTiO3 and magnetostrictive CoFe2O4 materials are presented to demonstrate the effect of the functional gradient factor and material length-scale parameter on the induced fields. The exact solutions presented in this work can also serve as benchmarks to various numerical methods for analyzing the size-dependent features in layered systems. 展开更多

The open part of the crack is assumed to be magnetically impermeable and electrically permeable. The Dirichlet-Riemann boundary value problem is formulated and solved analytically. Stress, magnetic induction and electrical displacement intensity factors as well as energy release rate are thus found in analytical forms. Analytical expressions for the contact zone length have been derived. Some numerical results are presented and compared with those based on the other crack surface conditions. It is shown clearly that the location and magnitude of the applied loads could significantly affect the contact zone length, the stress intensity factor and the energy release rate. 展开更多

A novel extended traction boundary element-free method is proposed to analyze the crack problems of two-dimensional infinite magnetoelectroelastic solid.An extended traction boundary integral equation only involving Cauchy singularity is firstly derived.Then,the extended dislocation densities on the crack surface are expressed as the combination of a characteristic term and unknown weight functions,and the radial point interpolation method is adopted to approximate the unknown weight functions.The numerical scheme of the extended traction boundary element-free method is further established,and an effective numerical procedure is used to evaluate the Cauchy singular integrals.Finally,the stress intensity factor,electric displacement intensity factor and magnetic induction intensity factor are computed for some selected crack problems that contain straight,curved and branched cracks,and good numerical results are obtained.At the same time,the fracture properties of these crack problems are discussed. 展开更多
