The concentration size distributions and composition of marine aerosols over the Kuroshio area are analyzed. Neutron activation analysis is used to determine the elemental composition of the aerosols. The authors also discuss some characteristics of marine aerosols relating to long-range transport of crustal and anthropogenic elements from the continent to the remote ocean. Analytical results indicate that elements Al, Fe, Sc and Sb over this area are obviously influenced by the continent of Asia, and the size distributions are changed after long-range transport. The concentration of large particles increase. The concentrations of the elements C1 and Na are closely related to ocean conditions; the source of the elements Cl and Na is mainly the ocean. Besides coal combustion, the ocean is also a very important source for the element Se. The amount of Se is related to the distribution of marine life.展开更多

This paper deals with the study on the seasonal variation of the marine aerosols with the meteorological parameters, the differences and the relations between the marine and continental aerosols. The results show that the marine aerosol concentrations and size distribution over the East China Sea have distinct seasonal change characteristics, which may be attributed to the East Asian atmospheric circulation. The size distribution is discussed by using a three-parameter size distribution model.展开更多

For examining the modification, the marine aerosol particles are collected at an island, East China Sea. Comparison of elemental composition of the marine aerosols with that of the samples collected at a coastal site, e.g. in Shanghai, was made. The results of chemical analysis show that the loss of chlorine component in aerosol particles is one of the main characteristics in the course of diffusion of marine aerosols into the coastal continent. Sulphur is a dominant component for fine particles in both marine and coastal aerosols. The relation of particle number concentration and particle size distribution to the meteorological conditions was discussed briefly. These results can be used as a reference in the estimation of equivalent refractive index of the aerosols for radiation transfer.展开更多

The concentration of water soluble ions (Na^+, NH4^+, Ca^2+, Cl^-, MSA , SO4^2- and so on) are analyzed. By correlation analysis, the ions can be divided into three groups : ( 1 ) Na^+ , Mg^2+, K^+, Ca^2+, Cl^-, SO4^2-, mainly from sea salt; (2) NH4^+, NO3^-, markedly from coastal regions of the continents ; (3) Acetate, MSA, C2O4^2-, from other sources. Marine aerosols are the dominant origin, Cl^- and Na^+ are the most dominant anion and cation, respectively and these two ions ( Na^+ +Cl^- ) account for 55. 6% of the total aerosol loading. The mean equivalence ratio of NH4^+/SO4^2- is 0.45, we suggest that ammonium and sulfate exist mainly as NH4HSO4. The concentration of NO3- shows three different patterns on the route of expedition: Japan Sea with median value of 15.2 neq · m^ -3 ; Sea of Okhostk and Bering Sea of 1.8 neq ·m ^-3 and Arctic Ocean of 0.4 neq · m^-3 Bering Sea is a high MSA area. Through the comparison of the concentration of main water soluble ions between the First and Second Chinese National Arctic Research Expedition, the variation matches each other.展开更多

All the samples were analyzed for SO42-, NO3-, Cl-, Na+ , NH4+, using ion chromatography. The results indicate that the concentration of sulfate in marine aerosols over the Xiamen waters appears to be of seasonal variation, in an order of winter > spring > autumn > summer. The mean sulfate concentration lor the total marine aerosol samples over the Xiamen waters is 9. 37 μg/m3, respectively 0. 89 and 8. 48 μg/m3 for the seasalt and non-sea-salt sulfate. The distribution of sulfate shows a bimodal form with a peak in the coarse particle range which is derived from the sea-salt sulfate, and a peak in the fine particle range which is derived from the non-sea-salt sulfate. The total deposition of sulfate to the Xiamen waters is estimated to be 4. 68g/m2 · a, with dry and wet depositions being approximately 2.19 and 2. 49g/m2 · a respectively.展开更多

In these areas, air masses are influenced by pollution outflows from the Asian continent. The size and elemental composition of dry deposited particles were investigated using a scanning electron microscope. Number-size distributions of these particles were approximately lognormal. Under clear conditions, the mode size was about 5.0 μm, with a mean diameter of 6.9 μm. Under cloudy and foggy conditions, the mean diameters were 5.7 and 6.0 μm, respectively, but the mode sizes were vague. Non-mixed mineral particles, sea salt, and mixed mineral-sea salt particles were the major particle types. Correspondingly, Al and Si were the most frequently detected elements. Frequencies of K-, Ca-, and S-containing particles were highest under foggy conditions, while the frequency of Na-containing particles was lowest. These results indicate that fog favored sulfate production on the particles and led to the deposited mineral particles more abundant in secondary salt, suggesting the importance to consider the dependence of the comoosition of deoosited mineral narticles on weather as well as narticle size.展开更多

During the Chinese Comprehensive Ocean Experiment in November 2012, size and mass spectra of individual atmospheric particles in the size range from 0.2 to 2.0 μm were measured on board by a single particle aerosol mass spectrometer (SPAMS). The average hourly particle number (PN) was around 4560 + 3240 in the South Yellow Sea (SYS), 2900 ± 3970 in the North Yellow Sea (NYS), and 1700 ± 2220 in the Bohai Sea (BS). PN in NYS and BS varied greatly over 3 orders of magnitude, while that in SYS varied shghtly. The size distributions were fitted with two log-normal modes. Accumulation mode dominated in NYS and BS, especially during episodic periods. Coarse mode particles played an important role in SYS. Particles were dassifled using an adaptive resonance theory based neural network algorithm (ART-2a). Six particle types were identified with secondary-containing, aged sea-salt, soot-like, biomass burning, fresh sea-salt, and lead-containing particles accounting for 32%, 21%, 18%, 16%, 4%, and 3% of total PN, respectively. Aerosols in BS were relatively enriched in particles from anthropogenic sources compared to SYS, probably due to emissions from more developed upwind regions and indicating stronger influence of continental outflow on marine environment. Variation of source types depended mainly on origins of transported air masses. This study examined rapid changes in PN, size distribution and source types of fine particles in marine atmospheres. It also demonstrated the effectiveness of hi,h-time-resolution source apportionment by ART-2a.展开更多

On the basis of the comparative research, the long-range transport processes of aerosol particles are discussed.展开更多
