Objective:To understand the existing fish distribution and marketing systems,assess marketing costs and margins and identify constraints of fish marketing systems.Methods:Data were collected from three different marke...Objective:To understand the existing fish distribution and marketing systems,assess marketing costs and margins and identify constraints of fish marketing systems.Methods:Data were collected from three different markets by fishermen,commission agents,wholesalers,retailers,day laborers etc.through questionnaire interviews and participatory approach during June to September,2013.Results:Four types of marketing channel were identified from farmers to consumers in all the three fish markets through a number of intermediaries.The daily supply of total fish in Binodpur Market,Talaimari Market and Shaheb Market was estimated 0.8-1 ton,0.2-0.3 ton and 8-8.1 ton,respectively.Virtually,most of the fish(75%)is imported from outside;the local supply amount is only 25%.The total marketing cost of wholesalers and retailers of the three markets were$8.58 and$6.47 per day,respectively.The average marketing margin of the wholesalers and retailers of the three markets were$0.18 and$0.25 per kg respectively.Income of fisherman,wholesaler,retailer and day laborer was estimated at$350,$9.75,$6.48,and$1.69,respectively.Conclusions:Traders have broadly improved their food consumption,standards of living,purchasing power,choice and ability as an economic sector.展开更多
The small indigenous fish species(SIS)are harvested as ensemble of different fish species of varying size and shape.An appraisal of the abundance and biomass of fish species constituting such ensemble was carried out ...The small indigenous fish species(SIS)are harvested as ensemble of different fish species of varying size and shape.An appraisal of the abundance and biomass of fish species constituting such ensemble was carried out with samples collected from fish markets ofWest Bengal,India.The data revealed that at least 22 different fish species were present varying in numbers and species combinations.The abundance and biomass of the individual fish species was negatively correlated,indicating numerical dominance of small sized species.Logarithmic regression showed a good fit of the relative abundance(y)with the species richness(x)in the samples of SIS(y=55.72ln(x)e 77.27;r^(2)=0.940),while power regression was best fit for the relative biomass of individual fish(y)with the species richness(x)in the samples of SIS(y=24.58x^(-1.54);R^(2)=0.831).In overall both species specific and individual based biomass and abundance relationships were negatively correlated.In order to ascertain the harvest and marketability of the SIS in a judicious manner,monitoring of the fish assemblages in natural habitats is recommended.展开更多
Objective:To study the prevalence of Edwardsiella tarda(E.tarda)in finfish and shellfish of West Bengal and Bihar,India and their antibiogram.Methods:Fish samples were enriched overnight in Edwardsiella ictaluri broth...Objective:To study the prevalence of Edwardsiella tarda(E.tarda)in finfish and shellfish of West Bengal and Bihar,India and their antibiogram.Methods:Fish samples were enriched overnight in Edwardsiella ictaluri broth and plated onto Edwardsiella ictaluri agar.Typical colonies were identified conventionally and by VITEK 2 compact system.Antibiogram was done by agar disc diffusion assay.Results:Of the 118 fish samples screened,only 14.41%had E.tarda.The incidence was marginally high in wild fish(15.30%)than in cultured fish(13.26%).Maximum incidence was in intestine(12.98%)followed by gills(6.60%)and skin(2.38%).All E.tarda strains were sensitive to ciprofloxacin and exhibited varying degrees of resistance to other antibiotics.Multiple antibiotic resistance was seen in 84.00%–87.50%of the E.tarda strains.Majority of them had high minimal inhibitory concentration values(200μg/mL)for oxytetracycline and gentamycin.Conclusions:The results suggested that considerable proportions of commercially important finfish are carriers of multiple antibiotic resistance E.tarda.This calls for proper sanitary measures to eliminate this pathogen in fish and fishery products.展开更多
