Medical English,as a specialized form of English,has attracted considerable attention due to its unique linguistic features.Grammaticalization and lexicalization represent critical mechanisms in the evolution of language and are essential for understanding and mastering medical English.This study,drawing on the MEDLINE corpus,investigates the characteristics of grammaticalization and lexicalization in medical English from the perspective of cognitive linguistics,aiming to unveil its underlying cognitive foundations.The findings suggest that the processes of grammaticalization and lexicalization in medical English reflect cognitive mechanisms such as categorization,inferential processing,and pragmatic strategies.These insights provide novel approaches and methodologies for the teaching of medical English. 展开更多

To conform to the college English teaching reform from English for General Purposes (EGP) to English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in the vital transfer era, the Foreign Language Department of Second Military Medical Un... To conform to the college English teaching reform from English for General Purposes (EGP) to English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in the vital transfer era, the Foreign Language Department of Second Military Medical University (SMMU) launched an English for Medical Academic Purpose (EMAP) curriculum with English Forum on Medical Humanities (EFMH), a project-based teaching practice. Based on Rogers' learner-centered humanistic teaching approach which emphasizes students' involvement and experiences in learning, EFMH puts students and their practice in a central place. After four-year exploration and operation, the Forum has developed from a small-scaled embryo into an internationalized, standardized and professionalized event, having produced fruitful outcomes. It is expected that the success of EFMH will provide inspiring experiences and enlightenments for higher medical education in terms of academic English teaching and teachers' responsibilities to foster high-quality medical students. 展开更多

The content of the paper was determined by a need identified based on author's professional experience as an EMP instructor designing and delivering the content-based language lessons--language preparation for Doctoral Degree Applicants in medicine. The author believes that in English class teachers should adopt a student-centered approach, have some knowledge of the special subjects and choose appropriate materials that fit all medical students. This approach has achieved satisfactory result in helping students know about the latest breakthroughs in biomedical fields, communicate with colleagues of other countries and contribute to foreign medical journals. 展开更多

Based on typical characteristics of the flipped class, college students' addiction for smartphones and the appropriateness and convenience of We Chat, it is implemented with the help of We Chat. It can be divided into three steps to implement: pre-class, in-class and post-class. However, to a certain extent, this kind of teaching mode is limited by students' self-consciousness, enthusiasm, language foundation,self-learning ability and teachers' guidance. In the past decades,a number of researchers have tried hard to identify the move-step structure of different sections in research articles(RAs)from various disciplines.However,there is a very few amount of previous studies conducted on the move-step structure of the Introduction section of English medical science research articles(MSRAs)written by Chinese researchers published in international journals.In order to fill this gap,the present study aims to identify the moves,steps,and their structure of the Introduction section of English MSRAs written by Chinese researchers at Zunyi Medical University(ZMU)published in international journals.To create the target corpus of the present study,30 Introductions were purposively selected from 25 international medical science journals,which were published from 2007 to 2015.It is worth noting that all the authors are restricted to Chinese researchers only and at least one author must come from ZMU.The framework of Kanoksilapatham’s(2005)was adopted for the move-step analysis in the present study.The results demonstrated that these Introduction sections were generally written with three moves following the selected framework.In addition,there were two new steps that occurred in the Introduction section of these English MSRAs.In conclusion,the findings of the present study might provide a guideline for the research who plan to write English MSRAs for international articles more effectively.Moreover,the findings may provide valuable information for academic writing textbook designers as well. 展开更多
