To study the anti-explosion protection effect of polyurea coating on reinforced concrete box girder, two segmental girder specimens were made at a scale of 1:3,numbered as G(without polyurea coating)and PCG(with polyurea coating). The failure characteristics and dynamic responses of the specimens were compared through conducting explosion tests. The reliability of the numerical simulation using LS-DYNA software was verified by the test results. The effects of different scaled distances, reinforcement ratios, concrete strengths, coating thicknesses and ranges of polyurea were studied. The results show that the polyurea coating can effectively enhance the anti-explosion performance of the girder. The top plate of middle chamber in specimen G forms an elliptical penetrating hole, while that in specimen PCG only shows a very slight local dent. The peak vertical displacement and residual displacement of PCG decrease by 74.8% and 73.7%,respectively,compared with those of specimen G.For the TNT explosion with small equivalent, the polyurea coating has a more significant protective effect on reducing the size of fracture. With the increase of TNT equivalent, the protective effect of polyurea on reducing girder displacement becomes more significant. The optimal reinforcement ratio, concrete strength, thickness and range of polyurea coating were also drawn. 展开更多

The mechanical properties and failure mechanism of lightweight aggregate concrete(LWAC)is a hot topic in the engineering field, and the relationship between its microstructure and macroscopic mechanical properties is also a frontier research topic in the academic field. In this study, the image processing technology is used to establish a micro-structure model of lightweight aggregate concrete.Through the information extraction and processing of the section image of actual light aggregate concrete specimens, the mesostructural model of light aggregate concrete with real aggregate characteristics is established. The numerical simulation of uniaxial tensile test, uniaxial compression test and three-point bending test of lightweight aggregate concrete are carried out using a new finite element method-the base force element method respectively.Firstly, the image processing technology is used to produce beam specimens, uniaxial compression specimens and uniaxial tensile specimens of light aggregate concrete, which can better simulate the aggregate shape and random distribution of real light aggregate concrete.Secondly, the three-point bending test is numerically simulated.Thirdly, the uniaxial compression specimen generated by image processing technology is numerically simulated.Fourth, the uniaxial tensile specimen generated by image processing technology is numerically simulated. The mechanical behavior and damage mode of the specimen during loading were analyzed. The results of numerical simulation are compared and analyzed with those of relevant experiments. The feasibility and correctness of the micromodel established in this study for analyzing the micromechanics of lightweight aggregate concrete materials are verified.Image processing technology has a broad application prospect in the field of concrete mesoscopic damage analysis. 展开更多

The internal temperature of cast-in-place concrete bridges undergoes strong variations during the construction as a result of environmental factors. In order to determine precisely such variations, the present study relies on the finite element method, used to model the bridge box girder section and simulate the internal temperature distribution during construction. The numerical results display good agreement with measured temperature values. It is shown that when the external temperature is higher, and the internal and external temperature difference is relatively small, the deviation of the fitting line from existing specifications(Chinese specification,American specification,New Zealand specification)is relatively large and vice versa. 展开更多

In order to study the residual stress distribution law of welded joints of arch ribs of large-span steel pipe concrete arch bridges, numerical simulation of temperature, stress and strain fields based on ABAQUS for welded joints of arch-ribbed steel tubes using 7-,8-and 9-layer welds is carried out and its accuracy is demonstrated. The steel pipe welding temperature changes, residual stress distribution, different processes residual stress changes in the law,the prediction of post-weld residual stress distribution and deformation are studied in this paper. The results show that the temperature field values and test results are more consistent with the accuracy of numerical simulation of welding, the welding process is mainly in the form of heat transfer;Residual high stresses are predominantly distributed in the Fusion zone(FZ)and Heat-affected zone(HAZ),with residual stress levels tending to decrease from the center of the weld along the axial path, the maximum stress appears in the FZ and HAZ junction; The number of welding layers has an effect on the residual stress distribution, the number of welding layers increases, the residual stress tends to decrease, while the FZ and HAZ high stress area range shrinks;Increasing the number of plies will increase the amount of residual distortion. 展开更多

Based on the damage constitutive model for concrete, the Weibull distribution function was used to characterize the random distribution of the mechanical properties of materials by finely subdividing concrete slab elements, and a concrete random mesoscopic damage model was established. The seismic response of a 100-m high concrete face rockfill dam(CFRD), subjected to ground motion with different intensities, was simulated with the three-dimensional finite element method(FEM), with emphasis on exploration of damage and the cracking process of concrete slabs during earthquakes as well as analysis of dynamic damage and cracking characteristics during strong earthquakes. The calculated results show that the number of damaged and cracking elements on concrete slabs grows with the duration of earthquakes. With increasing earthquake intensity, the damaged zone and cracking zone on concrete slabs grow wider. During a 7.0-magnitude earthquake, the stress level of concrete slabs is low for the CFRD, and there is almost no damage or slight damage to the slabs. While during a 9.0-magnitude strong earthquake, the percentages of damaged elements and macrocracking elements continuously ascend with the duration of the earthquake, peaking at approximately 26% and 5% at the end of the earthquake, respectively. The concrete random mesoscopic damage model can depict the entire process of sprouting, growing, connecting, and expanding of cracks on a concrete slab during earthquakes. 展开更多

Pipe cooling is an effective method of mass concrete temperature control, but its accurate and convenient numerical simulation is still a cumbersome problem. An improved embedded model, considering the water temperature variation along the pipe, was proposed for simulating the temperature field of early-age concrete structures containing cooling pipes. The improved model was verified with an engineering example. Then, the p-version self-adaption algorithm for the improved embedded model was deduced, and the initial values and boundary conditions were examined. Comparison of some numerical samples shows that the proposed model can provide satisfying precision and a higher efficiency. The analysis efficiency can be doubled at the same precision, even for a large-scale element. The p-version algorithm can fit grids of different sizes for the temperature field simulation. The convenience of the proposed algorithm lies in the possibility of locating more pipe segments in one element without the need of so regular a shape as in the explicit model. 展开更多

The numerical simulation on explosion in concrete and soil is performed by using the three-dimension finite element code LS-DYNA, into which a continuum damage model which can well describe the fracture of concrete is implemented. As a consequence, wave propagation and attenuation in concrete and on soil-concrete interface are obtained respectively. Moreover, the damage regions of concrete at different thicknesses of soil (TOS) and depths of charge (DOC) are procured. The existent soil reduces damage region of concrete. A meso-scale truss network model was developed to predict chloride diffusion in concrete. The model regards concrete as a three-phase composite of mortar matrix, coarse aggregates, and the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between the mortar matrix and the aggregates. The diffusion coefficient of chloride in the mortar and the ITZ can be analytically determined with only the water-to-cement ratio and volume fraction of fine aggregates. Fick's second law of diffusion was used as the governing equation for chloride diffusion in a homogenous medium (e.g., mortar); it was discretized and applied to the truss network model. The solution procedure of the truss network model based on the diffusion law and the meso-scale composite structure of concrete is outlined. Additionally, the dependence of the diffusion coefficient of chloride in the mortar and the ITZ on exposure duration and temperature is taken into account to illustrate their effect on chloride diffusion coefficient. The numerical results show that the exposure duration and environmental temperature play important roles in the diffusion rate of chloride ions in concrete. It is also concluded that the meso-scale truss network model can be applied to chloride transport analysis of damaged (or cracked) concrete. 展开更多

In this study,a peridynamic fiber-reinforced concrete model is developed based on the bond-based peridynamic model with rotation effect(BBPDR).The fibers are modelled by a semi-discrete method and distributed with random locations and angles in the concrete specimen, since the fiber content is low,and its scale is smaller than the concrete matrix. The interactions between fibers and concrete matrix are investigated by the improvement of the bond’s strength and stiffness. Also, the frictional effect between the fibers and the concrete matrix is considered, which is divided into static friction and slip friction. To validate the proposed model, several examples are simulated, including the tensile test and the three-point bending beam test. And the numerical results of the proposed model are compared with the experiments and other numerical models. The comparisons show that the proposed model is capable of simulating the fracture behavior of the fiber-reinforced concrete. After adding the fibers, the tensile strength, bending strength, and toughness of the fiber-reinforced concrete specimens are improved.Besides, the fibers distribution has an impact on the crack path, especially in the three-point bending beam test. 展开更多

In this study, for the purpose of improving the efficiency and accuracy of numerical simulation of massive concrete, the symmetric successive over relaxation-preconditioned conjugate gradient method (SSOR-PCGM) with an improved iteration format was derived and applied to solution of large sparse symmetric positive definite linear equations in the computational process of the finite element analysis. A three-dimensional simulation program for massive concrete was developed based on SSOR-PCGM with an improved iteration format. Then, the programs based on the direct method and SSOR-PCGM with an improved iteration format were used for computation of the Guandi roller compacted concrete (RCC) gravity dam and an elastic cube under free expansion. The comparison and analysis of the computational results show that SSOR-PCGM with the improved iteration format occupies much less physical memory and can solve larger-scale problems with much less computing time and flexible control of accuracy. 展开更多

In order to numerically simulate the failure process of rock and concrete under uniaxial tension,an improved method of selecting the mechanical properties of materials was presented for the random mechanic parameter model based on the mesoscopic damage mechanics. The product of strength and elastic modulus of mesoscale representative volume element was considered to be one of the mechanical property parameters of materials and assumed to conform to specified probability distributions to reflect the heterogeneity of mechanical property in materials. With the improved property parameter selection method,a numerical program was developed and the simulation of the failure process of the rock and concrete specimens under static tensile loading condition was carried out.The failure process and complete stress-strain curves of a class of rock and concrete in stable fracture propagation manner under uniaxial tension were obtained. The simulated macroscopic mechanical behavior was compared with the available laboratory experimental observation, and a reasonable agreement was obtained.Verification shows that the improved parameter selection method is suitable for mesoscopic numerical simulation in the failure process of rock and concrete. 展开更多

In order to investigate the fatigue performance of French high modulus asphalt concrete and the correlation between Burger's parameters and fatigue life, the virtual model of asphalt mixture trapezoidal specimen in the two-point bending fatigue test was constructed in discrement element software PFC3D. The initial stiffness and the maximum stress when the specimen reached fatigue were calculated. Through the comparison between virtual and single field fatigue test curves, the credibility of simulation in DEMwas verified. Then, the impacts of top controlled displacement and Burger's parameters( E_1,E_2,η_1,η_2) on the fatigue life of the specimen were explored. The simulation results indicate that the maximum stress increases with the increase in the top controlled displacement. With the increase of E_1 and the decrease of E_2 in Burger's model, the modulus of the asphalt binder increases, and the fatigue performance of the asphalt mixture enhances. η_1 and η_2 have limited influence on fatigue life compared with E_1 and E_2. 展开更多

In order to investigate and research the fatigue cracking of prestressed concrete fatigue properties and loading and stiffness degeneration process, cyclic loading tests were carried out on six prestressed concrete beams and the stiffness degradation under fatigue was investigated. A simulation model of stiffness degradation is proposed based on the stiffness analysis of the fatigue-damaged section. The elastic modulus of damaged concrete and the effective residual area of steel were introduced as well as an adjusted three-stage concrete fatigue damage evolution model. The strip method was used to analyze concrete damage due to changing stress along the depth of the beam section. The simulation and test results were compared and a method of predicting fatigue deflection was presented based on the simulation model. The predicted results were compared with that of the neural network method. It is in good agreement for the simulation results with the test results. It is only less than5% error for the simulation model which can reveal the two-stage degradation of prestressed concrete beams under cyclic loading. It is more precise for the simulation prediction method under proper conditions. 展开更多

This study presents a numerical multi-scale simulation framework which is extended to accommodate hybrid simulation (numerical-experimental integration). The framework is enhanced with a standardized data exchange format and connected to a generalized controller interface program which facilitates communication with various types of laboratory equipment and testing configurations. A small-scale experimental program was conducted using a six degree-of-freedom hydraulic testing equipment to verify the proposed framework and provide additional data for small-scale testing of shear- critical reinforced concrete structures. The specimens were tested in a multi-axial hybrid simulation manner under a reversed cyclic loading condition simulating earthquake forces. The physical models were 1/3.23-scale representations of a beam and two columns. A mixed-type modelling technique was employed to analyze the remainder of the structures. The hybrid simulation results were compared against those obtained from a large-scale test and finite element analyses. The study found that if precautions are taken in preparing model materials and if the shear-related mechanisms are accurately considered in the numerical model, small-scale hybrid simulations can adequately simulate the behaviour of shear-critical structures. Although the findings of the study are promising, to draw general conclusions additional test data are required. 展开更多

Isolation belt constructed between the blast point and the construction is one of the useful design schemes for blast resistance. The nonlinear procedure ANSYS/LSDYNA970 is used to simulate the contact detonation and the isolation belt of blast resistance filled with the air or water respectively. Temperature field and its variation with time are necessary for analyzing the thermo-mechanical performance of mass concrete structures at their early ages. This paper carries out a temperature field simulation analysis for an original segment of a real box girder bridge with the finite element software ANSYS. Two representative exothermic rate models are used to describe the heat- releasing process caused by the cement hydration in concrete. The exothermic rate model that conforms to reality more closely is recognized by comparing the simulation results with the data gathered from the optical fiber temperature sensors pre-embedded in the original segment. The air temperature and wind velocity that constitute thermal boundary conditions are determined in the light of the local meteorological department and correlative research achievements of recent years. Moreover, the consideration for the steel formwork acting as a barrier to heat loss is also proved to be beneficial to improve the simulation effect. 展开更多

In this study, the compressive, split tensile, and flexural strengths of concrete with nano-CaCO_(3) only were compared with those of concrete with nano-CaCO_(3) and basalt fibers through field experiments, and the underlying mechanisms were analyzed by the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) techniques. On the mesoscale,a damage model of concrete was established based on the continuum progressive damage theory, which was used to investigate the influence of different lengths and contents of fibers on the mechanical properties of concrete. Then, the experimental and numerical simulation results were compared and analyzed to verify the feasibility of model. The results show that nano-CaCO_(3) can enhance the compressive strength of the concrete, with an optimal content of 2.0%.Adding basalt fibers into the nano-CaCO_(3) reinforced concrete may further enhance the compressive, split tensile, and flexural strengths of the concrete;however, the higher content of basalt fiber can not lead to higher performance of concrete. The optimal length and content of fiber are 6 mm and 0.20%,respectively.The SEM result shows that the aggregation of basalt fibers is detrimental to the mechanical properties of concrete. The numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results. 展开更多
