Purpose: This paper intends to explore a quantitative method for investigating the characteristics of information diffusion through social media like weblogs and microblogs.By using the social network analysis methods...Purpose: This paper intends to explore a quantitative method for investigating the characteristics of information diffusion through social media like weblogs and microblogs.By using the social network analysis methods,we attempt to analyze the different characteristics of information diffusion in weblogs and microblogs as well as the possible reasons of these differences.Design/methodology/approach: Using the social network analysis methods,this paper carries out an empirical study by taking the Chinese weblogs and microblogs in the field of Library and Information Science(LIS) as the research sample and employing measures such as network density,core/peripheral structure and centrality.Findings: Firstly,both bloggers and microbloggers maintain weak ties,and both of their social networks display a small-world effect. Secondly,compared with weblog users,microblog users are more interconnected,more equal and more capable of developing relationships with people outside their own social networks. Thirdly,the microblogging social network is more conducive to information diffusion than the blogging network,because of their differences in functions and the information flow mechanism. Finally,the communication mode emerged with microblogging,with the characteristics of micro-content,multi-channel information dissemination,dense and decentralized social network and content aggregation,will be one of the trends in the development of the information exchange platform in the future.Research limitations: The sample size needs to be increased so that samples are more representative. Errors may exist during the data collection. Moreover,the individual-level characteristics of the samples as well as the types of information exchanged need to be further studied.Practical implications: This preliminary study explores the characteristics of information diffusion in the network environment and verifies the feasibility of conducting a quantitative analysis of information diffusion through social media. In addition,it provides insight into the characteristics of information diffusion in weblogs and microblogs and the possible reasons of these differences.Originality/value: We have analyzed the characteristics of information diffusion in weblogs and microblogs by using the social network analysis methods. Then, some rules of e-mail communication network evolution are found. Second, the model of e-mail information propagation is described, and e-mail communication network evolution model based on user information propagation is proposed. Lastly, the simulation proves the correctness of the distribution characteristic of degree and strength of the model proposed and then verifies that the model proposed is closer to the real situation of e-mail communication network through parameter comparison. By mining the four aspects of density, accessibility, centrality, block model, the results demonstrated that QQ social network and WeChat social network existed the phenomenon of small world, leaders and subgroups, and the key nodes of QQ human network were more than WeChat network. Through using the key nodes, it can push the precise and efficient information and improve the accuracy of information transmission and impact among network members.展开更多

This paper intends to analyze the interdisciplinary and intradisciplinary knowledge communication patterns based on friends-list links in the blog community at Sciencenet.cn by using hyperlink analysis and social network analysis. The major findings are: 1) More bloggers have an academic background in management science and life science; 2) there are some core actors in co-inlink network and co-outlink network, who take the lead in engaging with knowledge exchange activities and produce a great influence on interdisciplinary communication; 3) interactive relationships commonly exist between a blogger and those on his/her friends list, and the most linked-to blogs usually play a key role in generating interactive communication; 4) management science has the highest co-inlink count with life science or information science and it has the highest co-outlink count with life science or mathematical and physical science; 5) management science and life science have the greatest impact on information science and the interdisciplinary knowledge communication will also produce relatively significant influence on the development of information science discipline. The propagation of information in online social networks plays a critical role in modern life,and thus has been studied broadly.Researchers have proposed a series of propagation models,generally,which use a single tra...The propagation of information in online social networks plays a critical role in modern life,and thus has been studied broadly.Researchers have proposed a series of propagation models,generally,which use a single transition probability or consider factors such as content and time to describe the way how a user activates her/his neighbors.However,the research on the mechanism how social ties between users play roles in propagation process is still limited.Specifically,comprehensive summary of factors which affect user’s decision whether to share neighbor’s content was lacked in existing works,so that the existing models failed to clearly describe the process a user be activated by a neighbor.To this end,in this paper,we analyze the close correspondence between social tie in propagation process and communication channel,thus we propose to exploit the communication channel to describe the information propagation process between users,and design a social tie channel(STC)model.The model can naturally incorporate many factors affecting the information propagation through edges such as content topic and user preference,and thus can effectively capture the user behavior and relationship characteristics which indicate the property of a social tie.Extensive experiments conducted on two real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our model on content sharing prediction between users.展开更多
