Two-mm thick A1050 pure aluminum plates were successfully joined by conventional and rapid cooling friction stir welding(FSW), respectively. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded joints were investigated by electron backscatter diffraction characterization, Vickers hardness measurements, and tensile testing. The results showed that liquid CO_(2) coolant significantly reduced the peak temperature and increased the cooling rate, so the rapidly cooled FSW joint exhibited fine grains with a large number of dislocations. The grain refinement mechanism of the FSW A1050 pure aluminum joint was primarily attributed to the combined effects of continuous dynamic recrystallization, grain subdivision, and geometric dynamic recrystallization. Compared with conventional FSW, the yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and fracture elongation of rapidly cooled FSW joint were significantly enhanced, and the welding efficiency was increased from 80% to 93%. The enhanced mechanical properties and improved synergy of strength and ductility were obtained due to the increased dislocation density and remarkable grain refinement. The wear of the tool can produce several WC particles retained in the joint, and the contribution of second phase strengthening to the enhanced strength should not be ignored. 展开更多

A novel double side friction stir Z shape lap-butt welding(DS-FSZW)process was proposed to achieve excellent mechanical properties of Al/Cu medium-thick dissimilar joints. The influence of welding parameters on weld microstructure and properties of DS-FSZW joint were systematically investigated. It indicated that defect-free medium-thick Al/Cu DS-FSZW joint could be achieved under an optimal welding parameter.DS-FSZW joint was prone to form void defects in the bottom of the second-pass weld. The recrystallization mechanisms at the top and middle of the weld nugget zone(WNZ)were continuous dynamic recrystallization(CDRX)and geometric dynamic recrystallization(GDRX).While the major recrystallization mechanism at the bottom of the WNZ was GDRX.DS-FSZW joint of the optimal welding condition with 850 r/min-400 mm/min was produced with a continuous thin and crack-free IMCs layer at the Al/Cu interface, and the maximum tensile strength of this joint is 160.57 MPa,which is equivalent to 65.54%of pure Cu base material. Moreover, the corrosion resistance of Al/Cu DS-FSZW joints also achieved its maximum value at the optimal welding parameter of 850 r/min-400 mm/min.It demonstrates that the DS-FSZW process can simultaneously produce medium-thick Al/Cu joints with excellent mechanical performance and corrosion resistance. 展开更多

Laser-arc hybrid welding of AZ31B magnesium alloy was carried out,the effects of welding parameters on weld formation, microstructure homogeneity and mechanical properties were investigated. The results showed that laser-arc hybrid welding was beneficial to improve the weld formation of magnesium alloy by inhibiting the defect of undercut and pores. The weld microstructure was mainly columnar grains neighboring the fusion line and equiaxed grains at the weld center. It was interesting that the grain size at the upper arc zone was smaller than that at the lower laser zone, with the difference mainly affected by laser power rather than welding current and welding speed. The welding parameters were optimized as laser power of 3.5 kW,welding current of 100 A and welding speed of 1.5 m/min.In this case, the weld was free of undercut and pores, and the tensile strength and elongation rate reached 252 MPa and 11.2%,respectively.Finally,the microstructure homogeneity was illustrated according to the heat distribution, and the evolution law of tensile properties was discussed basing on the weld formation and microstructure characteristics. 展开更多

The mechanical mismatch effect frequently occurs in the dissimilar materials welded joints, thus leading to plastic gradient at the interface between the weld and heat-affected zone(HAZ). In this work, the boron steel and Q235 steel were selected for laser tailor welding, which obtained boron/Q235 steel tailor-welded blanks(TWBs). The method of welding with synchronous thermal field(WSTF) was utilized to eliminate the mismatch effects in TWBs. The WSTF was employed to adjust cooling rates of welded joints, thereby intervening in the solidification behaviors and phase transition of the molten pool. Boron/Q235 steel was welded by laser under conventional and WSTF(300-600 ℃) conditions, respectively. The results show that the microstructure of weld and HAZ(boron) was adequately transitioned to ferrites and pearlites instead of abundant martensite by WSTF. Meanwhile, the discrepancy of microhardness and yield strength between various regions of welded joints was greatly reduced, and the overall plasticity of welded joints was enhanced by WSTF. It is indicated that WSTF can effectively contribute to reducing plastic gradient and achieving mechanical congruity in welded joints by restraining the generation of hardbrittle phase, which could significantly improve the formability of TWBs in subsequent hot stamping. 展开更多

The high entropy alloys(HEAs)are the newly developed high-performance materials that have gained significant importance in defence, nuclear and aerospace sector due to their superior mechanical properties, heat resistance, high temperature strength and corrosion resistance. These alloys are manufactured by the equal mixing or larger proportions of five or more alloying elements.HEAs exhibit superior mechanical performance compared to traditional engineering alloys because of the extensive alloying composition and higher entropy of mixing.Solid state welding(SSW)techniques such as friction stir welding(FSW),rotary friction welding(RFW),diffusion bonding(DB)and explosive welding(EW)have been efficiently deployed for improving the microstructural integrity and mechanical properties of welded HEA joints. The HEA interlayers revealed greater potential in supressing the formation of deleterious intermetallic phases and maximizing the mechanical properties of HEAs joints. The similar and dissimilar joining of HEAs has been manifested to be viable for HEA systems which further expands their industrial applications. Thus, the main objective of this review paper is to present a critical review of current state of research, challenges and opportunities and main directions in SSW of HEAs mainly CoCrFeNiMn and Al_xCoCrFeNi alloys. The state of the art of problems, progress and future outlook in SSW of HEAs are critically reviewed by considering the formation of phases, microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of HEAs joints. 展开更多

In the realm of military and defence applications, exposure to radiation significantly challenges the performance and reliability of solder alloys and joints in electronic systems. This comprehensive review examines radiation-induced effects on solder alloys and solder joints in terms of microstructure and mechanical properties. In this paper, we evaluate the existing literature, including experimental studies and fundamental theory, to provide a comprehensive overview of the behavior of solder materials under radiation. A review of the literature highlights key mechanisms that contribute to radiation-induced changes in the microstructure, such as the formation of intermetallic compounds, grain growth,micro-voids and micro-cracks. Radiation is explored as a factor influencing solder alloy hardness, strength, fatigue and ductility. Moreover, the review addresses the challenges and limitations inherent in studying the effects of radiation on solder materials and offers recommendations for future research. It is crucial to understand radiation-induced effects on solder performance to design robust and radiationresistant electronic systems. A review of radiation effects on solder materials and their applications in electronics serves as a valuable resource for researchers, engineers, and practitioners in that field. 展开更多

To improve the microstructure and properties of the electron beam welded joints, the vacuum or furnace whole post weld heat treatment (FWPWHT) usually should be done on it. The electron beam local post weld heat treatment (EBLPWHT) is a rather new heat treatment procedure that provides the advantages of high precision, flexibility and efficiency, energy saving and higher productivity. In this paper, the microstructure, mechanical properties, fracture toughness and fatigue properties of electron beam welded joints of 30CrMnSiNi2A steel in as-welded (AW) and EBLPWHT conditions have been investigated respectively. The results show that the microstructures of different zones of joints in as-welded condition are changed by EBLPWHT procedure, in which the welds from coarse needle martensite into lath-shaped martensite; the main structures of heat affected zones (HAZ) from lath-shaped martensite into lower bainite. The properties of welded joints can be improved by the EBLPWHT in some extent, especially the fracture toughness of the welds and the fatigue crack resistance of welded joints can be sufficiently improved. However, more appropriate heat treatment parameters of the EBLPWHT have to be studied in order to increase the mechanical properties of base metal near by the HAZ. 展开更多

Aging treatment and various heat input conditions and mechanical properties of TIG welded 606I-T6 alloy joints were adopted to investigate the microstructural evolution by microstructural observations, microhardness tests, and tensile tests. With an increase in heat input, the width of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) increases and grains in the fusion zone (FZ) coarsen. Moreover, the hardness of the HAZ decreases, whereas that of the FZ decreases initially and then increases with an increase in heat input. Low heat input results in the low ultimate tensile strength of the welded joints due to the presence of partial penetrations and pores in the welded joints. After a simple artificial aging treatment at 175℃ for 8 h, the microstructure of the welded joints changes slightly. The mechanical properties of the welded joints enhance significantly after the aging process as few precipitates distribute in the welded seam. 展开更多

The microstructure evolution and high-temperature mechanical properties of laser beam welded TC4/TA15 dissimilar titanium alloy joints under different welding parameters were studied. The results show that the weld fusion zone of TC4/TA15 dissimilar welded joints consists of coarsenedβcolumnar crystals that contain mainly acicularα’martensite. The heat affected zone is composed of the initialαphase and the transformedβstructure, and the width of heat affected zone on the TA15 side is narrower than that on the TC4 side. With increasing temperature, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the TC4/TA15 dissimilar welded joints decrease and the highest plastic deformation is obtained at 800°C.The tensile strength of the dissimilar joints with different welding parameters and base material satisfies the following relation(from high to low):TA15 base material>dissimilar joints>TC4 base material. The microhardness of a cross-section of the TC4/TA15 dissimilar joints reaches a maximum at the centre of the weld and is reduced globally after heat treatment, but the microhardness distribution is not changed. An elevated temperature tensile fracture of the dissimilar joints is located on the side of the TC4 base material.Necking occurs during the tensile tests and the fracture characteristics are typical when ductility is present in the material. 展开更多

The microstructure and mechanical properties of laser beam welded dissimilar joints in TC4 and TA15 titanium alloyswere investigated. The results showed that the coarse columnar grains containing a large amount of acicular α and martensite α′ werepresent in the fusion zone (FZ), some residual α phases and martensite structure were formed in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) onTC4 side, and bulk equiaxed α phase of the HAZ was on TA15 side. An asymmetrical microhardness profile across the dissimilarjoint was observed with the highest microhardness in the FZ and the lowest microhardness in TA15 BM. The orders of yield strengthand ultimate tensile strength were as follows: TC4 BM > TC4/TC4 similar joint > TA15 BM > TA15/TA15 similar joint > TC4/TA15dissimilar joint, and increased while hardening capacity and strain hardening exponent decreased with increasing strain rate from1×10?4 s?1 to 1×10?2 s?1. The microstructure and mechanical properties of dissimilar pinless friction stir spot welded joint of2A12aluminum alloy and TC4titanium alloy were evaluated. The results show that the joint of Al/Ti dissimilar alloys can be successfully attained through pinless friction stir spot welding(FSSW).The joint can be divided into three zones(SZ,TMAZ and HAZ).The microstructure of joint in Al alloy side changes significantly but it basically has no change in Ti alloy side.At the same rotation speed, the maximum load of welded joints gradually rises with the increase in dwell time.At the same dwell time, the maximum load of the welded joint increases with the increase of the rotational speed. In addition, optimal parameters were obtained in this work, and they are rotation speed of1500r/min,plunge speed of30mm/min,plunge depth of0.3mm and dwell time of15s.The fracture mode of welded joints is interfacial shear fracture. The microhardness of the joint on the Al side distributes in a typical“W”type and is symmetry along the weld center, but the distribution of the microhardness on the Ti side has no obvious change. 展开更多

Then, the post-weld heat treatment was performed on the welded T-joints. The weld microstructure under different aging temperature and time was investigated by transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical properties were examined by hardness test and tensile test. The results showed that the micro-hardness was sensitive to heat treatment temperature and time. Increasing temperature was beneficial to the shortening of peak aging time. There were a large number of dislocations and few precipitates in the welded joints. With the increase of post-weld heat treatment temperature and time, the density of dislocation decreased. Meanwhile, the strengthening phase precipitated and grew up gradually. When the post-weld heat treatment temperature increased up to 200℃, large Q' phases were observed. And they were responsible for the peak value of the micro-hardness in the welded joints. 展开更多

A plasma arc welding( PAW)-tungsten inert gas( TIG) hybrid welding process is proposed. And this paper investigated the microstructure and properties of pure nickel N6 joints by PAW-TIG hybrid welding. Compared with the conventional PAW method, the characteristic of PAW-TIG welding process is that there is no interaction between the two arcs. The addition of TIG can enhance the intrinsic high-efficiency peculiarity and the stability of the keyhole status of PAW. The joints made using PAW and PAW-TIG,respectively,were subjected to microstructural evaluations and tensile testing so as to analyze the effect of TIG arc energy on the microstructure and mechanical properties of these joints. The results of this investigation indicate that significant grain coarsening was observed in the weld metal( WM) and heat affected zone( HAZ)and it is found that the extent of grain coarsening increased with the addition of TIG arc. And the microstructure in hybrid joint, with wider weld width and the smooth surface,is coarser than in PAW joint. Furthermore, the microhardness and ultimate tensile strength( UTS) of hybrid joint is slightly lower than that of PAW joint. The fractograph observation shows that the fracturing mechanism of PAW joints ductile, while the hybrid welding joints exists as brittle-ductile fracture mode. The outcome of this work shows that in the condition of same deposited rate,TIG arc post-weld heat treatment can improve the welding efficiency and welding speed. The proposed PAW-TIG hybrid welding process is demonstrated to be suitable for welding nickel and its alloys in industry application. 展开更多

In friction stir welding(FSW), pin profile has more influence on material flow especially in welding of dissimilar materials with different yield strengths. In the dissimilar welding of aluminium and copper, the material flow behaviour is complex to understand and thus a study is needed to reveal the mechanism of flow behaviour and the resultant mechanical properties. Three pin profiles, whorl pin profile(WPP), plain taper pin profile(PTP) and taper treaded pin profile(TTP) were chosen. The effects of pin profile on the microstructure, microhardness and tensile properties were studied. Optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and EDS analysis were used to characterize the microstructural features. Among the three pin profiles, PTP profile results in defect-free stir zone and maximum joint properties of yield strength of 101 MPa, tensile strength of 116 MPa and joint efficiency of 68% compared with the other pin profiles. However, the microhardness plots are more or less identical for all the pin profiles but follows fluctuating trend. This is attributed to the heterogeneous distribution of hard Cu particle. The superior joint properties are mainly attributed to the defect-free stir zone formation and dispersion strengthening. 展开更多
