The main purpose of this paper is to respond to the questions what is mind and consciousness and where this resides. The answers are based on the frontline Informational Model of Human Body and Living Structures(IMHBLS),which shows that mind and consciousness can be described by the activity of the Informational System of the Human Body and Living Structures(ISHBLS),consisting of seven informational components, each of them with specific activity and functions,inter-correlated to support the immaterial/informational manifestation of the body expressed by mind and consciousness. The basic concept of matter-related and virtual information results as a consequence of the operability of the physics, chemistry, biologic,or mathematics laws, which actually act as informational operators, such processes are informationally driven and manifested finally as a“media-like functions”of mind and consciousness,on the“screen/display”of prefrontal cortex. The mind is therefore described as the capacity of every individual to access the data field of own life experience, where the thought acts as an informational operator, which can activate the required information from internal/external reality.Consciousness is the result of the info-representation of the explored reality, accumulated by the momentary connection, and compared/combined with the life experience, serving as judgment reference/criteria.The question is discussed in relation with the localization of consciousness, showing that this resides in the brain,as a result of the activity of ISHBLS.The discussion on the experimental evidences concerning the minimal basic components necessary and sufficient to sustain consciousness, compared with the results of the informational model, indicates the cortico-thalamus axis,in a full agreement each other. One of the basic findings is that the activation of consciousness is operated in two steps, one consisting in a feed-forward reception and another in feedback perception for recognition of the info-significance,which is fully supported by the recently reported experimental results. The phenomena of intuition, inspiration, premonition,“deja vue”,retrocausality, and intentionality are discussed. This model unifies the eastern and western concepts/models on consciousness and mind, explaining the energetic Yung/Yin Chinese model by YES/NO-informational Bit-type behavior, the Plato’s ideas/forms by“information”concept as a participating component of reality,Aristotle’s materialist view with matter structuration(assisted by information),and archaic model of the seven“chakras”at human,as vital informational centers connected with the body. 展开更多

The large scale universe is full of mystery;the dark matter and dark energy amount to respective 23%and 73%of the total energy of the universe, whereas the rest 4%of the total energy is attributed to the normal material world which can be comprehended by the present science. In the nano-scale quantum world, the EPR(Einstein,Podolsky, and Rosen)paradox and Bells formalism and its experimental tests demonstrated that there is an intrinsic nonlocality present in the quantum world through quantum entanglement which is against the relativity that the information communication between two quanta cannot exceed the speed of light.Even more seriously is the philosophical problem why a deterministic Schrodinger equation describes a particle resulting in a probability interpretation of the particle. In the medium size of the universe, the human brain is mysterious;the human all have consciousness that is the subjective awareness of the inner and outer world which is hard to comprehend in physics;some paranormal phenomena due to the action of the consciousness like finger reading, remote viewing, psychokinesis are even harder to understand. In order to explain these large, medium, and small scale bewildering phenomena in the universe,I proposed two hypotheses in 2014(Lee,2014):(1)The real universe is a complex universe consisting of 8 dimensional(8D)space-time.In addition to our familiar 4D real space-time(Yang),there exists another 4D imaginary space-time(Yin)full of consciousness and information websites which are part of the dark matter.(2)When an object is in a quantum state, the imaginary part of its complex wavefunction(or quantum field)represents the consciousness of the object;the content of the consciousness is determined by the space-time geometry of the real part of the complex wavefunction(quantum mind). This hypothesis provides a scientific basis for pan-psychism that everything has a soul but so long as it enters into the quantum state. 展开更多

The relationship between psychology and philosophy is a long-standing one.Although psychology today looks different from pre-1879 psychology,it still has much in common. One of these commonalities is the concept of mind.A group of psychologists like Freud and Maslow have studied the serious role of the mind in guiding our lives.Inspired by the philosophy and theory of subjectivist philosophers,Freud was able to give structure and function to the human mind. Therefore, the philosophy of mind and its relationship to psychology need to be studied.Today, artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, and information processing are among the most widely used sciences that have given meaning and meaning to human life, all of which operate in the realm of the human mind.Cognitive scientists have proven that the mind, especially in today’s world,in addition to being,as always,a place of knowledge, thought, and problem solving,it has become a place for war and the victory of governments and states. In a way, colonial governments exploit the poor and developing societies by controlling the minds and nervous systems of the poor.In this article,an attempt has been made to study the concept of mind and its relationship with psychology and philosophy. The problem of body and mind,Gestalt psychology, cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence, and information processing are among the items that have been studied descriptively. 展开更多

The evolution and development of Searle’s philosophy of mind can be divided into two important stages,i.e.the origin and beginning stage between 1960sand 1970s,the formation and development stage since 1980s.Searle’s Speech Act Theory started the research on philosophy of mind, which is considered as the origin of his philosophy of mind. The Theories of Intentionality and Chinese Room Argument are the most important and most influential academic findings in his research in the field of philosophy of mind, which lay a solid theoretical foundation for the formation and development of his theories of philosophy of mind.Searle’s philosophy of mind finds wide prospect in the research field, which provides a new direction to understand the world and probe into mind, proposes a new perspective and methodology for the study of language, and promotes the new development of the study of language. 展开更多

A prestigious conference claimed recently a revolution in neuroscience to understand consciousness. In this paper it is shown that this revolution already came, revealing the determinant role of information for human and living structures, both for their structuration and behavior, explaining consciousness at human as the result of the activity of the Informational System of Human and Living Structures. For this,it is emphasized and discussed the informational structure of the eukaryotic cell, the basic/representative composing unit of the multicellular body of human, animals, and plants, showing that the composition and functions of the informational system are basically similar with that of human. To reveal the driving role of informational mechanisms in human and subhuman organisms,it is introduced the concept of matter-related information, showing that information can be hidden/“embodied”or released/“disembodied”in or from the elemental micro/macro components of the body, during the multiple chain/cascade interactions including transduction processes. It is shown that such interactions are initiated from two main categories of informational sources:implicit(genetic)and explicit(external/internal)sources,the first category leading to structuration of the body and the second the reactive behavior.Consciousness in human and subhuman organisms, expressed by two corresponding informational relations,is the result of the release of information by the mind, acting as an informational operator/device,the development degree of mind and consciousness depending on the complexity degree and adaptation. An analogy of this Informational Model of Human and Living Structures(IMHLS)with the ancient model of chakras is highlighted, showing that these models support each other, applied with beneficial effects in Reiki technique and music-based cognitive multi-task therapy for neuro-rehabilitation. 展开更多

Our conscious day-to-day self is often described as the “tip of the iceberg” of a much greater cognitive system. The edge of the water divides the phenomenal self from the sub/unconscious underlying it. Similar to an iceberg, the unconscious activity below the water vastly outweighs the conscious activity above it. What exactly lies beneath the surface of this murky water is a tantalizing topic of research and theory. The current research predominantly focuses on the physiology of the brain and the default mode network has been identified as an intrinsic mode of functioning. It is well known that autonomic nervous system sympathovagal balance orchestrated by the central autonomic network is strongly associated with modulation of cardiac, respiratory rate and other visceral physiological activity. In this article, we use existing research and a novel theory to tie together the default mode network, the autonomic nervous system, and non-neural physiology to describe a hypothesis on a greater biological system from which intrinsic brain activity may be founded. This hypothesis is that intrinsic brain activity and connectivities are significantly founded on activity of the body. We review how cardiorespiratory and other rhythms and electrical activity of the body may modulate and even underlie fundamental activity of the human brain and ultimately the mind. A more holistic biological system that could interface the brain and body via mechanisms such as neurovascular coupling would more accurately describe the nature of neural systems. Greater knowledge on the association and interface of brain and body via isomorphic physiologic counterparts to mind may carry profound implications in understanding intrinsic activity of the brain, consciousness, mind, and mental illness. 展开更多

This paper proposes that conscious, explicit memory, implicit memory, and instincts constitute the four-component mind for the mental origins of psychotherapy and personality. The mental origin of the personality theories including the big five personality traits, the MBTI, the social style model, the Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, and the Schwartz’s theory of basic human values is from the unconscious instincts (the six social and three mental protective instincts). The three mental protective instincts that contain the three instinctive countermeasures against the three adversities are hyperactivity countermeasure against danger, phobia countermeasure against unfamiliarity-uncertainty, and comforter countermeasure against hardship. Each countermeasure is regulated (moderated) by a regulator to minimize overactive countermeasure as physical regulator to minimize overactive immunity in physical immune system. Severe adversities and ineffective regulators over-activate protective countermeasures to generate overactive countermeasures as overactive hyperactivity, overactive phobia, and overactive comforter, corresponding to dramatic-impulsive cluster, anxious-fearful cluster, and odd-eccentric cluster, respectively for personality-mental disorders in the DSM-5. Such disordered behavioral habits are stored in unconscious implicit memory which generates disordered thought patterns in pre-conscious explicit memory. For psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) normalizes disordered thought patterns in explicit memory to normalize disordered behavioral habit memory in implicit memory through the repetitive training in normalizing thought patterns, feelings, and behaviors. For psychotherapy, mindfulness meditation strengthens conscious attention (working memory) to normalize disordered behavioral habit memory through the repetitive training in directing conscious attention to the breath or body. In conclusion, the mental origin of personality-mental disorders is from the overactive mental protective instincts. The mental origin of psychotherapy is from therapeutic implicit memory and conscious attention for CBT and mindfulness meditation, respectively. The mental origin of personality is from the unconscious instincts. Therefore, the four-component mind of conscious, explicit memory, implicit memory, and instincts explains the origin, the storage, and the normalization of personality-mental disorders for psychotherapy, and provides the mental origin of personality. 展开更多

PHILOSOPHY and PSYCHIATRY are unusual bedfellows.Medical students, already hard pressed for time, are generally thrust into the melee of mental disorders, having spent years focussing on first dissecting and then prodding human bodies, which too often leaves little room for evaluating theories about human nature, especially with respect to“Intent”or Free Will. The present writer was unusual in that having spent two years in pre-clinical medical training,he devoted a full university year to pursuing philosophical studies in up to 20 different university departments. Thus he entered his teaching hospital with a working knowledge of Hume,Kant,Sartre,Wittgenstein,Buber and others. This is not a clinical paper-it focuses on the reasoning behind psychiatric precepts-so it is perhaps inevitable that today’s prevailing ideology is shown to be grievously wanting-a case of decidedly unphilosophical, even anti-philosophical,medical practice. The notion of there ever being a“scientific”theory of psychiatry has already been discounted in a series of earlier papers-which leaves us with the responsibility for choosing the best possible option, from an infinite number of theoretical models available. The paper provides a whistle-stop tour of how mental disease looks if you start with a confident and consistent look at that pinnacle of human attributes-consciousness.It doesn’t presume to say what consciousness is,but it does assume that it has a function, like every other human asset.Indeed by cutting corners, evaluating what has worked over 60 years in psychiatry, the result is as straightforward a picture of sanity as one can reasonably expect. As such,it leaves the reader with little wriggle room-there is enough clarity here, for you to accept or reject the main proposition. However, since the flaws described tend to be lethal, acceptance entails action. Now read on. 展开更多

The purpose of this research is to apply the Einstein’s principle of relativity to solve the mind-brain problem and to generate all Standard Model Particle masses. Our approach is somewhat analogous to the dualistic idea of Descartes. Instead of a pineal gland, wherein the brain interacts with the mind, we propose during the developmental stages of the human fetus the tiny brain begins to communicate with the smallest structures of spacetime. This interaction occurs as the fetus brain begins to emit thermodynamic low heat energies, which are then absorbed into the smallest structures of spacetime saturating the interstices of the fetus brain. Think of these heat-energies like Morse code instructions. Since these kinds of interaction involve spacetime, with brain matter-energy, and that our main guiding principle is that of relativity, our research resulted in a general relativistic wave equation, wherein the n-valued heat-energies emitted by the brain-field-matrix <em style="white-space:normal;">B</em><span style="white-space:nowrap;"><em>μ</em></span><em></em><em>v</em>, is identified as the energy momentum tensor of general relativity. The spacetime mind-matrix (<em style="white-space:normal;">M</em><em><em>μ</em><em></em><em>v</em></em>) is likewise identified as the Riemannian curvature matrix. Together they form a general relativistic expression given by: <em>M</em><em><span style="font-size:10px;"><em>μ</em></span><em style="font-size:10px;white-space:normal;"></em><em style="font-size:10px;white-space:normal;">v</em><span style="font-size:10px;white-space:normal;"> </span></em>+<em>P</em><em><span style="font-size:10px;"><em>μ</em></span><em style="font-size:10px;white-space:normal;"></em><em style="font-size:10px;white-space:normal;">v</em><span style="font-size:10px;white-space:normal;"> </span></em><em>M=cB<span style="font-size:10px;"><em>μ</em></span><em style="font-size:10px;white-space:normal;"></em><em style="font-size:10px;white-space:normal;">v</em></em>. Here <em>c</em> represents the combined general relativistic constants. By detaching the energy momentum tensor <em>B</em><span style="white-space:nowrap;"><em>μ</em></span><em></em><em>v</em> from the general relativistic wave equation, converting it to an operator, and then combining the time component with the Bose-Einstein equation, resulted in a brain temperature function capable of calculating precise heat-energies emitted by the brain during the formation of the fetus mind. As the fetus brain becomes more complex, it further organizes the mind. At some point self-aware consciousness is evoked within the spacetime mind. The same equation (<em>relabeled to distinguish it from the mind-brain equation</em>) can be applied to generate all Standard Model Particle masses. 展开更多

Recently we proposed “quantum language”, which was not only characterized as the metaphysical and linguistic turn of quantum mechanics but also the linguistic turn of Descartes = Kant epistemology. And further we believe that quantum language is the only scientifically successful theory in dualistic idealism. If this turn is regarded as progress in the history of western philosophy (i.e., if “philosophical progress” is defined by “approaching to quantum language”), we should study the linguistic mind-body problem more than the epistemological mind-body problem. In this paper, we show that to solve the mind-body problem and to propose “measurement axiom” in quantum language are equivalent. Since our approach is always within dualistic idealism, we believe that our linguistic answer is the only true solution to the mind-body problem. 展开更多

This commentary discusses how philosophy and science can collaborate to understand the human mind, considering dialogues involving three philosophers and three cognitive scientists. Their topics include the relation of philosophy and science, the nature of mind, the problem of consciousness, and the existence of free will. I argue that philosophy is more general and normative than science, but they are interdependent. Philosophy can build on the cognitive sciences to develop a theory of mind I call "multilevel materialism," which integrates molecular, neural, mental, and social mechanisms. Consciousness is increasingly being understood as resulting from neural mechanisms. Scientific advances make the traditional concept of free will implausible, but "freeish" will is consistent with new theories of decision making and action resulting from brain processes. Philosophers should work closely with scientists to address profound problems about knowledge, reality, and values. 展开更多

The physics of consciousness and universal mind is shown on the base of theory of byuons, the theory of “life’ of special unobservable discrete objects—byuons from which the surrounding space and the world of elementary particles are formed. An essential distinction of that theory from the modern models in the classical and quantum field theories is that the potentials of physical fields (gravitational, electromagnetic, asf.) gain exactly fixable, measurable values. Basic axioms and some conclusions of this theory are discussed. The theory of byuons predicts the existence of a new force and a new quantum information channel in nature. All objects of the Universe are shown to be united into the unique information field due to the huge interval of uncertainty in the coordinate (Δx = L = 1028 cm) of objects 4b (object formed during four-contact byuon-byuon interaction ( mc24b = 33 eV)) forming the surrounding physical space. It is a new quantum information channel. 展开更多

Under the influence of European rationalism, which holds that human rationality is higher than,or at least independent of human sensory cognition, the first generation of cognitive science advocates for disembodied cognition, manifesting the concept of dualism of mind and body. With the development of cognitive science in the 1980s,the second generation of cognitive science redefines the relationship between mind and body, thought and behavior, and reason and feeling and puts forward the concept of embodied cognition, representing monism of mind and body.It is claimed that the formation of concepts, categorical cognition and the evolution of rational thinking are characterized by embodiment, which is the necessary condition and basis for the formation of human rationality. The current study traces the shift of cognitive science from dualism to monism of mind and body and explores the relationship between rationality and sensibility from the perspective of philosophical basis and interpretations, with an aim to achieve a better understanding and thorough interpretation of human rationality. In this heated discussion about embodied cognition, there are still some fundamental questions that need to be further clarified, such as the essence and mechanism of human cognition, the ways that human body participates in cognitive activities, especially imagination and reasoning. The research paradigm of embodied cognition and its relevant theory have not been established and developed yet,and empirical research from interdisciplinary perspectives is far from enough to provide hard evidence for embodied cognition. 展开更多

The study found that the classics born during the turbulent Six Dynasties period, starting from Cao Pi’s“The Classics”to“Wen Fu”,“Wen Xin Diao Long”,“Shipin”and other classics, can all be analyzed to have a common origin.Attributes, that is,the philosophical strategy of dualistic isomorphism of explicit and implicit,is also a pattern;it can be proven that this is the philosophical key to interpreting and studying the classics of the Six Dynasties. It not only governs many aesthetic principles and aesthetic methods, but also emphasizes the need to transcend the appearance of current existence, transcend the current utilitarianism, and pay attention to the hidden and non-existent,just like paying attention to dark matter and antimatter in the universe.Pay attention to the origin of Shipin and expand aesthetic horizons;this philosophical secret not only exists in the classics of the Six Dynasties,it has its unity, graphics and vitality,as well as its historical inheritance and continuous operation. Its trajectory marks the context of literary theory and aesthetics;the modern construction of contemporary literary theory must be based on its operating trends.Only by transcending all utilitarianism can we better demonstrate the natural characteristics of Chinese tradition such as nationality.Otherwise, literary theory, aesthetics, and philosophy will not be self-consistent. 展开更多
