Conductivity Method as a New Monitoring Technique for Corrosion and Corrosion Inhibition Processes of Zinc Metal

The electrical conductivity method was successfully applied as a new monitoring technique to monitor the corrosion and corrosion inhibition processes of zinc metal. Measurements of electrical conductivity at 20.0°C of three different corrosive solutions (HCl, NaOH, and NaCl) were performed with two different concentrations (0.10 and 1.00 M) containing zinc sheets in the absence and presence of four different concentrations of sodium lignosulfonate (1.0, 5.0, 10.0, and 20.0 mM). The analysis of curves that illustrates the changes in electrical conductivity of these solutions provides qualitative information about the strength of corrosion as well as the extent of corrosion inhibition behavior. The results obtained from electrical conductivity measurements revealed that sodium lignosulfonate was an effective corrosion inhibitor in acidic medium (for both 0.10 and 1.00 M HCl) in which it converted into lignosulfonic acid, but was less effective in salt and alkaline media. 展开更多

A new approach is advanced based on wavelet transform in tandem with autoregressive technique. Wavelets and wavelet packets decompose dynamic signal into different bands and pro- vide multiresolution or multiscale view of signal. Autoregressive technique possesses effective function for short data processing. The approach is abopted to analyse nonstationary vibration sig- nals of mining excavator. The results indicate that nonstationary operating condition can be moni- tored and diagnosed. Transient toothmeshing frequency and rotating speed are measured. Weak vibration signal of defective ball bearing is extracted from strong vibration of gearbox and diag- nosed successfully. This approach is effective for nonstationary condition monitoring and early di- agnosis of latent fault. 展开更多

Establishment and data analysis of sea-state monitoring system along Taiwan coast

Taiwan Island is at the joint of Eurasian Continent and Pacific Plate, under threatening of typhoons and northeasterly strong winds. Consequently, enormous human lives and properties are lost every year. It is necessary to develop a coastal sea-state monitoring system. This paper introduces the coastal sea-state monitoring system (CSMS) along Taiwan coast. The COMC (Coastal Ocean Monitoring Center in National Cheng Kung University) built the Taiwan coastal sea-state monitoring system, which is modern and self-sufficient, consisting of data buoy, pile station, tide station, coastal weather station, and radar monitoring station. To assure the data quality, Data Quality Check Procedure (DQCP) and Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) were developed by the COMC. In further data analysis and data implementation of the observation, this paper also introduces some new methods that make the data with much more promising uses. These methods include empirical mode decomposition (EMD) used for the analysis of storm surge water level, wavelet transform used for the analysis of wave characteristics from nearshore X-band radar images, and data assimilation technique applied in wave nowcast operation. The coastal sea-state monitoring system has a great potential in providing ocean information to serve the society. 展开更多

The results showed that oxide spallation can be restrained by controlling cooling speed and the critical temperature drop of spallation initiation which is closely related to the oxide thickness or exposure time, and the spallation process of a little region may be described in more detail as two routes: from the oxide/substrate interface micro-decohesion, micro-buckles, buckle spreading, buckle crack to spallation and from the interface micro-decohesion, micro-buckles, buckle crack and spallation to the residual oxide decohesion and spallation. 展开更多

In order to explore the new technology and methods for seismic underground fluid observation,a test study on measurement of hydrogen concentration in fault gas is carried out at the piedmont fault zone of Zhongtiao Mountain. Through the experiment on observation positions,gas collection devices and sampling depths,the paper presents the observation method for fault gas hydrogen concentration by using an online automatic trace hydrogen analyzer. Comparative tests are conducted on the stability and optimum conditions of this type of instrument in the field environment, and the hydrogen concentrations at different measuring points of the same fault are observed. The results show that it is technically feasible to carry out continuous hydrogen concentration on a fault zone. The method proposed in this study could be a useful tool for setting the observation points,choosing a reasonable observation depth and scientific analysis of the observed data. 展开更多
