Purpose:This paper aims to explore the potential of the drama pedagogy that may contribute to primary children's moral growth in the Chinese educational context.It argues that drama may offer an ensemble-based,dia...Purpose:This paper aims to explore the potential of the drama pedagogy that may contribute to primary children's moral growth in the Chinese educational context.It argues that drama may offer an ensemble-based,dialogic,and narrative pedagogy for teaching morality to complement thedidactic traditional model.Design/Approach/Methods:The methodological approach is that of case study research,using different methods to assess the effects and effectiveness of the author's teaching.The fieldwork was undertaken in a public primary school in Beijing,in which the drama workshop The Boat was taught to I6 children on a voluntary basis.Findings:The study demonstrates that drama can be seen to some extent to assist pupils in aspects of their empathetic attitudes,dialogic thinking abilities,and autonomous thinking capacities.Originality/Value:The author hopes the study might stimulate more and deeper research in similar contexts and that this may further extend the understanding of Chinese teachers of this resourceful new pedagogy.展开更多
The use of role models for learning and publicity is widespread in China.By comparing four sets of primary school textbooks complied and published by People’s Education Press between 1999 and 2005,this study reveals ...The use of role models for learning and publicity is widespread in China.By comparing four sets of primary school textbooks complied and published by People’s Education Press between 1999 and 2005,this study reveals the similarities and differences between these textbooks with regard to the positive role models covered and the virtues conveyed.The major role models in both versions of the textbooks can be characterized as representing four main types of persons:children,Han Chinese,males,and modern people.However,the occupations of these role models are more diverse in the new textbooks,and the more recent editions place more emphasis on moral values such as“protecting the environment,”“loving peace,”and“promoting democratic cooperation.”The implications of the findings and the potential problems arising in the textbooks are discussed at the end,particularly noting the changing mode of regulation with regard to the individual-collective relationship.展开更多
