This study investigated how the mode in which the reading-writing integrated continuation task was conducted modulates the effects of second language(L2) syntactic alignment, through the English motion event construct...This study investigated how the mode in which the reading-writing integrated continuation task was conducted modulates the effects of second language(L2) syntactic alignment, through the English motion event construction with manner verbs. Ninety Chinese students were assigned to either of the two experimental groups or a control group, and they all experienced a pretest, an alignment phase and a posttest. In the alignment phase, the two experimental groups completed a reading-writing integrated continuation task but in different modes. For the multi-turn mode,participants reconstructed a picture story by continuing the episodes extracted from the story with one episode presented and continued at a time;for the single-turn mode, the first half of the same picture story was presented as a chunk, and then participants read and continued it. Results show that L2 learners aligned with the target structure in completing the story, and the alignment effect was retained in the posttest conducted after a delay of two weeks. Moreover, syntactic alignment was modulated by task mode with the multi-turn group exhibiting stronger immediate and longterm alignment effects. We conclude that the continuation task is a fruitful context for L2 structural alignment, and the magnitude of alignment effect hinges on interactive intensity.展开更多
The theory of conceptual transfer investigates the extent to which the perception of a previously learned language influences the conceptualization of a language learned subsequently.To provide further evidence suppor...The theory of conceptual transfer investigates the extent to which the perception of a previously learned language influences the conceptualization of a language learned subsequently.To provide further evidence supporting such hypotheses,the present study invites three groups of native Chinese-speaking college students to finish selected language tasks with an aim to explore whether the perception of L3 French motion verbs presents itself in the acquisition of L2 English path particles.All three participating groups have learned English as L2 and reached intermediate level,with one group being Chinese majors and the other two specializing in French with different proficiency levels.The findings suggest L3 would exhibit negative transfer in the acquisition of motion events in L2 English.Based on the analysis of participants’retrospective data and the comparison between Chinese group and French groups,the nature of such transfer is claimed to be conceptual.Results also reveal L3 proficiency exerts no influence on conceptual transfer.展开更多

Howev...The thinking-for-speaking hypothesis, formulated by Dan Slobin, has been considered a weak version of or an alternative to linguistic relativity since the 1990 s. Both state the influence of language on thought. However, claims regarding thinking-for-speaking are based on verbal evidence, whereas linguistic relativity claims are based on nonverbal evidence. There seems to be no interface between the two. The author argues that thinking for speaking is not an alternative but complementary to linguistic relativity by opening a window into the mind through which the influence of language on cognition is seen with observable behavior, and that the new paradigm of thinking for speaking and gesturing enables a combination of verbal and co-verbal evidence for the effect of language on cognition, as illustrated here by crosslinguistic comparisons of motion event narratives based on Talmy's linguistic typological framework.展开更多
With the recent development of digital Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) sensors, the cost of monitoring and detecting seismic events in real time can be greatly reduced. Ability of MEMS accelerograph to record...With the recent development of digital Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) sensors, the cost of monitoring and detecting seismic events in real time can be greatly reduced. Ability of MEMS accelerograph to record a seismic event depends upon the efficiency of triggering algorithm, apart from the sensor's sensitivity. There are several classic triggering algorithms developed to detect seismic events, ranging from basic amplitude threshold to more sophisticated pattern recognition. Algorithms based on STA/LTA are reported to be computationally efficient for real time monitoring. In this paper, we analyzed several STA/LTA algorithms to check their efficiency and suitability using data obtained from the Quake Catcher Network (network of MEMS accelerometer stations). We found that most of the STA/LTA algorithms are suitable for use with MEMS accelerometer data to accurately detect seismic events. However, the efficiency of any particular algorithm is found to be dependent on the parameter set used (i.e., window width of STA, LTA and threshold level).展开更多
The present study used electroencephalography to examine mu rhythm suppression (a putative index of human mirror neuron system activation) at frontal sites (F3, Fz and F4), central sites (C3, Cz and C4), parieta...The present study used electroencephalography to examine mu rhythm suppression (a putative index of human mirror neuron system activation) at frontal sites (F3, Fz and F4), central sites (C3, Cz and C4), parietal sites (P3, Pz and P4) and occipital sites (O1 and O2), while subjects observed real hand motion (real hand motion condition) and illustrative depictions of hand motion (drawn hand motion condition). Experimental data revealed that mu rhythm suppression was exhibited in the mirror neuron system when subjects observed both real and drawn hand motion. Moreover, the mu rhythm recorded at the F3, Fz, F4, and Pz poles was significantly suppressed while observing both stimulus types, but no obvious mu suppression occurred at the O1, 02 and 03 poles. These results suggest that the observation of drawings of human hand actions can activate the human mirror neuron system. This evidence supports the hypothesis that the mirror neuron system may be involved in intransitively abstract action understanding.展开更多

This paper assesses if the Planet 9 hypothesis, the exist...The Sun would be subject to a significant variation of orbital motion about the solar system barycentre if a small planet is orbiting at a very large distance. This paper assesses if the Planet 9 hypothesis, the existence of a ninth planet, is consistent with the planetary hypothesis: the synchronisation of sunspot emergence to solar inertial motion (SIM) induced by the planets. We show that SIM would be profoundly affected if Planet 9 exists and that the hypothesised effect of SIM on sunspot emergence would be radically different from the effect of SIM due to the existing eight planets. We compare the frequency and time variation of Sun to barycentre distance, R<sub>B</sub>, calculated for both the eight and nine planet systems, with the frequency and time variation of sunspot number (SSN). We show that including Planet 9 improves the coherence between R<sub>B</sub> and SSN in the decadal, centennial and millennial time range. Additionally, as the variation of R<sub>B </sub>is sensitive to the longitude and period of Planet 9, it is possible to adjust both parameters to fit the variation of R<sub>B</sub> to the SSN record and obtain new estimates of the period and present longitude of Planet 9. Finally, we develop the hypothesis that planetary induced solar acceleration reduces meridional flow and consequently sunspot emergence thereby providing an explanation for the observed coincidence of grand solar minima with intervals of extreme solar acceleration.展开更多
