We found that body condition index was higher during fallwinter for both species. We also found size dimorphism. Males of Eurasian Collared-Dove were larger than females in head length (p = 0.002) and tail length (p = 0.05) but smaller in culmen length. Female Mourning Doves had a higher body condition index compared to males (p = 0.02) during both seasons. As expected, Eurasian Collared-Dove was larger in all measurements than Mourning Dove (p > 0.05) but tail length (p = 0.12).展开更多

The concept of mourning should be understood both as way of showing grief in public spaces and a period of time. In turn, the concept of iconography means a collection of illustrations, paintings, prints, drawings relating to a person, place or topic. President of Poland, his wife and other 94 people died in the Smolensk plane crash on April 10, 2010, thus the images of plane crash and its outcome published in different segments of Polish press are the subject of the article. Research based on methods such as interpretation of composition and semiotics. I started my analysis with a few hypotheses: (1) The cultural background, especially religious, determines the mourning visual representation; (2) The result of certain style of visualization can be constructing of a political myth; (3) Different means can be used by mass media in adapting culture patterns process; (4) Different photographic genres can be used to illustrate the mourning; and (5) Press segments differ in way/style of mourning visualization.展开更多

The author intends to set a parallel between the ancient tragedy and its modern adaptation staged by one of the most prominent Polish directors Krzysztof Warlikowski. In the essay, the author will discuss how suffering is depicted in the ancient drama and what changes of mourning motif are introduced into its modern performance. The author will examine the literary as well as the (modern) theatrical topos of grief by analyzing the poetics of tragedy (dramatic structure, metaphors of death, dramatis personae, funeral vocabularium, function of laments) and the poetics of performance (stage design, costumes and props, funerary symbolism, acting, directing solutions). The purpose of the paper is to argue against the insignificance of Euripides' drama and the marginalization of Warlikowski's "Phoenician Women." Finally, the author will attempt to indicate the mourning motif as one of the essential and attractive for the ancient tragic plot and the modern performance as well展开更多

In The Red Violin, Girard's cinematic experiments apply techniques of montage and of repetitive musical theme, practicing intertextuality of non-chronological stories by paralleling various memories of each individual character, blurring the biological and metaphorical boundaries between the living and non-living, and highlighting the fateful interrelations among time, space and different characters' life experiences. In this vein, the memories and beings of both the living and the dead are tightly woven together while reproduced--or further, relived--in temporal, spatial and trans-individual dynamics. Reversing the negative imaginaries of loss and death, both Derrida and The Red Violin agree with a messianic work of mourning by exploring the powerful potentiality of spectrality that manifests a way to mutualize the subject/ other, the living/non-living, into a promised being, thus gesturing towards an infinite future.展开更多

It focuses on three main subjects of mourning before burial--lamentation, mourners' gestures and behaviors, and mourning apparel--to demonstrate the cultural function and social influence of the mourning rituals through the analysis of the function and purpose of the mourning of two ancient peoples. We find that there are some differences in these two ancient societies, although the rites of mourning share some basic and similar procedures and functions.展开更多

Critics have often credited the novella's intensely tragic narrative for spearheading a new kind of literary subjectivity that became a cornerstone of modern Chinese literature as heralded by the May Fourth critics in the late 1910s and the 1920s. However, very few have examined this new subjectivity as an effect of Su's critical engagement with a late Qing nationalist narrative. Su's novella was an appropriation of the anti-Manchu revolutionary narrative of a nation, which hinged on a paradoxical mode of envisaging a new China through a temporal return to the past and by means of a tragic sacrifice of the individual. Following a brief analysis of Su's early piece published in The People's Journal (Minbao 民报), this article demonstrates how The Lone Swan elaborated on an excess of individual sacrifice, while developing the new, mourning subjectivity as a witness to the unfinished revolutionary enterprise of forging a powerful nation. Su's narrative of cultural devastation resonates with Lu Xun's (1881-1936) late Qing work, but, in the May Fourth period that immediately followed, this sense of despair would become an unequivocal obiect for overcoming.展开更多
