With the raid progress of modern traffic and tools of communication, people’s contacts have become increasingly frequent with different regions and countries. The research on pragmatic failures in nonverbal communication allows people to understand its nature and eliminate some unnecessary misunderstanding. This paper aims at finding out the root causes about pragmatic failures in nonverbal communication in the intercultural communication, and providing several sensible recommendations.展开更多

On the one hand English teachers should emphasize to cultivate the students’ nonverbal communication competence while training their verbal communication ability, on the other teachers should pay attention to the use of nonverbal communication to teach effectively in college English classroom. The author illustrates the topic from four aspects: body language, paralanguage, object language and environmental language. If teachers use them actively, our students will become full-scale in communication competence and teachers can make classes more interesting thus stimulate the students’ motivation and affection in English study.展开更多

The aim of this preliminary study was to examine the use of sAA measurements as objective indicators of psychological and physiological stress levels by examining sAA changes in volunteers subjected to conditions similar to those suffered by children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities and cerebral paralysis. Twelve healthy volunteers were required to not move or speak, as is found in patients suffering from total paralysis, for 30 min. Saliva samples were taken at three points, and sAA activity was measured using a hand-held monitor before the test, immediately after the test, and 10 min after the test. In the present study, a marked increase in sAA activity due to physiological stress and a rapid return to the baseline level were observed. Many subjects felt bodily pain and psychotic discomfort. This measurement method is useful for evaluating stress in children with severe motor and intellectual disabilities, who can not fully express their emotions or communicate with their caregivers.展开更多

In most cases in intercultural interaction, people focus on verbal cues while neglecting those nonverbal messages produced by the bodies and the environment. Such neglect often results in misunderstandings and conflicts because nonverbal communication reveals basic cultural traits from which people are able to gather clues about underlying attitudes and values. So the study of nonverbal communication is an important component to the study of intercultural communication. It deserves due attention in foreign language acquisition. Grounded on the model of cultural learning put forward by Hanvey, the study puts forward a set of feasible suggestions on how to improve intercultural nonverbal communication competence of college non-English majors.展开更多

Seven female simulated patients and one male and one female pharmacist cooperated as patients and pharmacists, respectively. The medication teaching scenes were set up with three pharmacist placements (face-to-face at 50 cm and 70 cm, 90-degree at 70 cm) and three hospital rooms (0-degree, 45-degree, 90-degree). Pupil diameter, blink rate, saccades, and fixation rate of the patient at each of these locations were measured using a Tobii Pro Glass 2. The patient’s subjective evaluation at each placement was also investigated using the conversation scale, which assesses the optimal distance for conversation. The results for the pharmacy setting revealed that pupils were significantly more mydriatic at the 50 cm point than at the other points. The results for the hospital room setting showed the greatest mydriasis at the 0-degree point. The result of the 50 cm point for the pharmacy setting and the 0-degree point for the hospital room setting was similar to that of the subjective evaluation. When the likelihood of saccades occurrence in the hospital room setting was compared, saccades were found to be most likely to occur when medication instructions were given to patients at the 0-degree point. We believe that using pupil diameter for interpersonal distance, and saccades for angle will enable more accurate determinations of the optimal distance and angle between pharmacist and patient. The results of the present study suggest that the 70 cm face-to-face point in the pharmacy and the 45-degree point in the ward may be suitable for medication instruction.展开更多

English language and culture course combines both foreign language and cultural characteristics, which has very strong artistic and theoretical factors. Language is a part of culture, and plays an important role in culture. Language and culture are inseparable, if students do not understand the cultural background of foreign languages, cannot correctly understand and use foreign language. In the process of college English teaching, how to carry out cultural teaching and improve students’ cross-cultural communicative competence has become an important topic in English teaching and learning. In order to help students overcome obstacles in intercultural communication and cultivate students’ intercultural communicative competence, we should improve the level of college English teaching by integrating culture factors into English teaching. The culture we need to learn is not limited to the culture of the English-speaking countries. The cultural teaching in English teaching requires an all-round import展开更多
