An Analysis of China's Four Traditional Festivals from the Perspective of the Theory of Cultural Functions

This paper analyzes the cultural elements of China's four traditional festivals from the perspective of the Theory of Cultural Functions, which presents in detail the forming of traditional festivals, varied festival traditions and good expectations held by people toward lives. Visitor Motivations and Barriers for Sustainable Music Festival Tourism: The Case of Street Mode & Reworks Festivals

During the last decade, music festivals are increasingly used as an important motivator to attract visitors, giving riseto a more sustainable tourism growth in hand with cultural stimulation for the cities. This research paper aims toaddress the motives and barriers of music festival visitors travelling to attend two music events in the second largestGreek city of Thessaloniki in Northern Greece. The main objective of the research paper is to determine the visitors’motivation for choosing to attend each festival and thereafter the challenges they face during their visit in the city.This exploratory research study focuses on two distinct and popular music festivals namely Reworks Festival andStreet Mode Festival. Both events share three main characteristics: (1) They host both international & Greekprofessional artists;(2) they are primarily privately funded;and (3) they have achieved a consecutive 10 years ofsuccessful presence in the city attracting thousands of visitors each year. The research methodology is based on thecollection of qualitative data by conducting one to one interviews with festival visitors. Findings of the analysis ofthe two festivals direct at identifying the commonalities & differences in tourists’ drives and obstacles in regards totheir festival attendance and visit in the city of Thessaloniki. In both cases, it is inferred that both festivals have alot of further untapped potential, as unique city branding tools, adding value to the destinations and extending thetourism season. Conclusions can contribute to building more concise and sustainable destination tourism strategiesand, therefore, more successful and sustainable events, with long-term benefits, ranging from local to nationallevels.

The Significance of Festivals is “In Tune with the World”——Interpretation from the Perspective of Western Cultural Theory

In the historical background of “festivalization of culture”,to clarify the meaning of festivals is a prerequisite for accomplishing the cultural value of festivals.By interpreting relevant western cultural theories,especially Pieper’s statements,this article argues that “in tune with the world” is the fundamental meaning of festivals.Considered as a result,“in tune with the world” means metaphysical needs are satisfied,and when taken as a prerequisite,“in tune with the world” should rely on totality strength.The enlightenment rationality breaks away from the field of metaphysics due to overemphasis on reflection,which results in the discontinuity of totality strength in the transition from old to new.This is the fundamental reason why some current festivals cannot realize their own values.Therefore,emphasizing a festival’s cultural connotation and exploring the possibility of re-endowing festivals with charm should be the top priority of research on festivals.

Ancient Festivals in Kiitahya： A Narrative Research

The aim of this research is to analyse the celebration of ancient festivals through narrations. The study is a qualitative research in which narrative research was employed. The study was carried out in Kiitahya. The participants were selected using the snowball sampling technique which is a part of purposeful sampling. In the study, the data were collected through unstructured interviews, which are commonly used in narrative research. According to the results of the analysis, the festivals were examined as three themes： religious festivals, national festivals, and seasonal festivals. Preparations before the religious festivals include cleaning, shopping, and preparing meals. In the morning of the first festival day, fathers go to prayer with their sons. Then they visit cemetery. Women do not join these visits. In festival visits, guests are given socks and handkerchief. Preparations of national festivals begin long before. Streets are decorated with flags which signal the preparations. Celebrations mostly take place in stadiums. Reports showed that the celebrations of Nowruz are rare in Kfitahya. Reports indicated that in Kfitahya, Hldlrellez is much more frequently celebrated in contrast to Nowruz. Painting and clinking eggs are also seen in the celebration of Hldlrellez.

Racial Differences Effects on Oral Health and Periodontal Diseases Extent, Staging and Grading among the Multi-Ethnic Expatriates in Aseer Region, Saudi Arabia

Background: Given the increase in the numbers of expatriates in Saudi Arabia and the shortage of information about expatriates’ oral health and periodontal disease severity and progression. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the racial differences on oral health and periodontal disease extent, staging, and grading among the multi-ethnic expatriates in the Aseer region, Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 300 expatriates in Aseer region, Saudi Arabia. They were divided into three equal racial different groups (n = 100), Arabs (AR), Asians (AS), and Africans (AF). The interviews of all participants were completed then the clinical examinations of periodontal diseases extent, staging, and grading parameters were performed. Statistical analysis was done by ANOVA test, Tukey’s test, and Chi-square test. The statistical significance level was determined at p < 0.05. Results: There were statistically significant differences in the comparison between the three ethnic/racial groups in clinical parameters except in GBI, PCR, FI, TFO, and BC, where there were no statistically significant differences in the comparison between the three ethnic/racial groups. There were differences associated with age, gender, smoking, and diabetes, without statistically significant differences among the three racial groups. Conclusion: We concluded that most participants in this study had a generalized severe grade 4 plaque-induced gingivitis and localized periodontitis stage III grade B.

Study on the Reasons of Western Festivals' Popularity in China

With the development of reformation in China and the expanding of foreign exchanges,as the main composition of western culture,western festivals become a fashion in China.It has a special and far-reaching influence on our native festival culture and the young greatly.While many people especially young people celebrate western festivals,the Chinese traditional festivals seem fading out.This is an urgent problem that needs to be solved.This thesis is closely tracking the trend of the modern time and grasps this urgent and universal problem to conduct the research.On the basis of the investigation and analysis,this thesis aims to find out the underlying reasons of western festivals' popularity in China and offer some sensible and effective corresponding countermeasures to this problem.

International Arts Festivals Visitors＇ Motives and Profile Characteristics： The Case of Two Medium-Sized Greek Cities

This paper presents an analysis of two renowned international arts festivals visitors＇ motives and profilecharacteristics, in two medium-sized Greek cities： the Kalamata International Dance Festival （KIDF） and theDrama International Short Film Festival （DISFF）. The purpose of the study was to determine the reasons visitorsattend these festivals, which is necessary for building more concise marketing strategies and, therefore,more successful and sustainable events, with long-term benefits, ranging from the local to the national levels.The research addresses international arts festivals that share four main characteristics： （1） they host internationalprofessional artists; （2） they feature explicitly-stated artistic visions and objectives; （3） they are publicly funded;and （4） they have achieved a consecutive 23 years of successful presence in each city. These two case studiesrepresent two cultural events which have managed to maintain their popularity and high status, on the Europeanfestival map, as well as to raise their host cities＇ cultural and tourism standards, despite the serious economiccutback they have both faced. Due to limited available funds, the festivals lack marketing resources andspecifically data collection on visitor motivation, a gap which this study aims to remedy. Primary datawere collected with the aid of online structured questionnaires, distributed and collected during autumn2016. Altogether, 130 questionnaires were answered by visitors of the DISFF and 186 questionnaires wereanswered by visitors of the KIDF. Even though both festivals share similar characteristics regarding theirorganization and their aims, our analysis emphasized the heterogeneity of the motives of attendance in connectionwith the visitors＇ profile characteristics, for each event. While some similarities were found, especially betweendemographic sample characteristics and visitors＇ profiles, the general picture to emerge from the findingsindicates significant differences between the two cases. Arts festivals-goers do not appear to constitute a singlehomogeneous market; rather, each event appears to attract different audiences for different reasons. Theimplications of these findings, deriving from statistical analysis, are discussed and suggestions for further researchare outlined. This research aims to contribute to knowledge concerning the marketing strategies of internationalarts festivals in medium-sized cities, useful for research and academic purposes, as well as to local and nationalauthorities and other agencies and bodies, responsible for urban tourism and cultural city/town planning andmanagement.
