F. Hughes, has been proposed in this paper to solve the problem of high time cost in adopting a rational-based optimal design method for ship structural design. Furthermore,the method was verified by its effective application in optimization of the mid-ship section of a container ship. A full 3-D FEM model of a ship,suffering static and quasi-static loads, was used as the analyzing object for evaluating the structural performance of the mid-ship module, including static strength and buckling performance. Research results reveal that this new method could substantially reduce the computational cost of the rational-based optimization problem without decreasing its accuracy, which increases the feasibility and economic efficiency of using a rational-based optimal design method in ship structural design.展开更多

A 3-bladed rotor is designed, as an example, based on thevibratory hub load reduction optimization process with swept tip angle and composite material. In this paper,we present an optimal neuro-control scheme for continuous-time(CT)nonlinear systems with asymmetric input constraints.Initially,we introduce a discounted cost function for the CT nonlinear systems in ord...In this paper,we present an optimal neuro-control scheme for continuous-time(CT)nonlinear systems with asymmetric input constraints.Initially,we introduce a discounted cost function for the CT nonlinear systems in order to handle the asymmetric input constraints.Then,we develop a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation(HJBE),which arises in the discounted cost optimal control problem.To obtain the optimal neurocontroller,we utilize a critic neural network(CNN)to solve the HJBE under the framework of reinforcement learning.The CNN's weight vector is tuned via the gradient descent approach.Based on the Lyapunov method,we prove that uniform ultimate boundedness of the CNN's weight vector and the closed-loop system is guaranteed.Finally,we verify the effectiveness of the present optimal neuro-control strategy through performing simulations of two examples.展开更多
A new method of robust damper design is presented for elastic-plastic multi-degree-of-freedom(MDOF)building structures under multi-level ground motions(GMs).This method realizes a design that is effective for various ...A new method of robust damper design is presented for elastic-plastic multi-degree-of-freedom(MDOF)building structures under multi-level ground motions(GMs).This method realizes a design that is effective for various levels of GMs.The robustness of a design is measured by an incremental dynamic analysis(IDA)curve and an ideal drift response curve(IDRC).The IDRC is a plot of the optimized maximum deformation under a constraint on the total damper quantity vs.the design level of the GMs.The total damper quantity corresponds to the total cost of the added dampers.First,a problem of generation of IDRCs is stated.Then,its solution algorithm,which consists of the sensitivity-based algorithm(SBA)and a local search method,is proposed.In the application of the SBA,the passive added dampers are removed sequentially under the specified-level GMs.On the other hand,the proposed local search method can search the optimal solutions for a constant total damper quantity under GMs’increased levels.In this way,combining these two algorithms enables the comprehensive search of the optimal solutions for various conditions of the status of the GMs and the total damper quantity.The influence of selecting the type of added dampers(oil,hysteretic,and so on)and the selection of the input GMs on the IDRCs are investigated.Finally,a robust optimal design problem is formulated,and a simple local search-based algorithm is proposed.A simple index using the IDRC and the IDA curve of the model is used as the objective function.It is demonstrated that the proposed algorithm works well in spite of its simplicity.展开更多

Moreover, one also expects that the optimal topology can be obtained by starting from any initial topology configuration. An improved structural topological optimization method for multidisplacement constraints is proposed in this paper. In the proposed method, the whole optimization process is divided into two optimization adjustment phases and a phase transferring step. Firstly, an optimization model is built to deal with the varied displacement limits, design space adjustments, and reasonable relations between the element stiffness matrix and mass and its element topology variable. Secondly, a procedure is proposed to solve the optimization problem formulated in the first optimization adjustment phase, by starting with a small design space and advancing to a larger deign space. The design space adjustments are automatic when the design domain needs expansions, in which the convergence of the proposed method will not be affected. The final topology obtained by the proposed procedure in the first optimization phase, can approach to the vicinity of the optimum topology. Then, a heuristic algorithm is given to improve the efficiency and make the designed structural topology black/white in both the phase transferring step and the second optimization adjustment phase. And the optimum topology can finally be obtained by the second phase optimization adjustments. Two examples are presented to show that the topologies obtained by the proposed method are of very good 0/1 design distribution property, and the computational efficiency is enhanced by reducing the element number of the design structural finite model during two optimization adjustment phases. And the examples also show that this method is robust and practicable.展开更多

This paper proposes a multi-material topology optimization method based on the hybrid reliability of the probability-ellipsoid model with stress constraint for the stochastic uncertainty and epistemic uncertainty of m...This paper proposes a multi-material topology optimization method based on the hybrid reliability of the probability-ellipsoid model with stress constraint for the stochastic uncertainty and epistemic uncertainty of mechanical loads in optimization design.The probabilistic model is combined with the ellipsoidal model to describe the uncertainty of mechanical loads.The topology optimization formula is combined with the ordered solid isotropic material with penalization(ordered-SIMP)multi-material interpolation model.The stresses of all elements are integrated into a global stress measurement that approximates the maximum stress using the normalized p-norm function.Furthermore,the sequential optimization and reliability assessment(SORA)is applied to transform the original uncertainty optimization problem into an equivalent deterministic topology optimization(DTO)problem.Stochastic response surface and sparse grid technique are combined with SORA to get accurate information on the most probable failure point(MPP).In each cycle,the equivalent topology optimization formula is updated according to the MPP information obtained in the previous cycle.The adjoint variable method is used for deriving the sensitivity of the stress constraint and the moving asymptote method(MMA)is used to update design variables.Finally,the validity and feasibility of the method are verified by the numerical example of L-shape beam design,T-shape structure design,steering knuckle,and 3D T-shaped beam.展开更多

By using the quasi-static method, the mathematical model of structure optimization under dynamic stress, dynamic displacement and dynamic stability constraints were transformed into one subjected to static stress, displacement and stability constraints. The optimization procedures include two levels, i.e., the topology optimization and the shape optimization. In each level, the comprehensive algorithm was used and the relative difference quotients of two kinds of variables were used to search the optimum solution. A comparison between the optimum results of model with stability constraints and the optimum results of model without stability constraint was given. Traditional topology optimization methods may lead to a great reduction in the redundancy of the optimized structure due to unexpected material removal at the critical components.The local failure in critical componen...Traditional topology optimization methods may lead to a great reduction in the redundancy of the optimized structure due to unexpected material removal at the critical components.The local failure in critical components can instantly cause the overall failure in the structure.More and more scholars have taken the fail-safe design into consideration when conducting topology optimization.A lot of good designs have been obtained in their research,though limited regarding minimizing structural compliance(maximizing stiffness)with given amount of material.In terms of practical engineering applications considering fail-safe design,it is more meaningful to seek for the lightweight structure with enough stiffness to resist various component failures and/or to meet multiple design requirements,than the stiffest structure only.Thus,this paper presents a fail-safe topology optimization model for minimizing structural weight with respect to stress and displacement constraints.The optimization problem is solved by utilizing the independent continuous mapping(ICM)method combined with the dual sequence quadratic programming(DSQP)algorithm.Special treatments are applied to the constraints,including converting local stress constraints into a global structural strain energy constraint and expressing the displacement constraint explicitly with approximations.All of the constraints are nondimensionalized to avoid numerical instability caused by great differences in constraint magnitudes.The optimized results exhibit more complex topological configurations and higher redundancy to resist local failures than the traditional optimization designs.This paper also shows how to find the worst failure region,which can be a good reference for designers in engineering.展开更多

The multilevel optimal design approach is an efficient tool for the solution of large-scale engineering structures. In this paper, this approach is applied to the optimal design of a concrete-steel platform, which is formulated as a system level optimal design problem and a set of uncoupled substructure level optimal design problems. The process of optimization is a process of iteration between system level and substructure level until the objective function converges. Collaborative optimization (CO) is one of the most widely used methods in multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO), which is an effective methodology to solve modem complex engineering problems. CO consists of ...Collaborative optimization (CO) is one of the most widely used methods in multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO), which is an effective methodology to solve modem complex engineering problems. CO consists of two-level optimization problems which are system optimization problem and subspace optimization problem. The architecture of CO can reserve the autonomy of individual disciplines in maximum, while providing a mechanism for coordinating design problem. However, CO has low computation efficiency and is easy to diverge. For the purpose of solving these problems, the former improved methods were studied. The relaxation factors were used to change the system consistency constraints to inequality constraints, or the response surface estimation was used to surrogate the system consistency constraints. However, these methods didn't avoid the computational difficulties very well, furthermore, some new problems arose. The concept of optimum constraint sensitivity was proposed, and the quadratic constraints in system level were reformed. Hence, a new collaborative optimization was developed, which is called system level dynamic constraint collaborative optimization (DCCO). The novel method is able to increase the exchange of information between system level and disciplinary level. The optimization results of each disciplinary optimization can be feedback to system level with the optimum constraint sensitivity. On the basis of the information, the new system level linear dynamic constraints can be constructed; it is better to reflect the effect of disciplinary level optimizations. The system level optimizer can clearly capture the boundary where disciplinary objective functions become zero, and considerably enhance the convergence. Two standard MDO examples were conducted to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of DCCO. The results show that DCCO can save the solving time, and is much better in terms of convergence and robustness, hence, the new method is more efficient.展开更多

This paper introduces a novel mutation operator, without using the scaling factor F, a conventional control parameter, and this mutation can generate multiple trial vectors by incorporating different weighted values at each generation, which can make the best of the selected multiple parents to improve the probability of generating a better offspring. In addition, in order to enhance the capacity of adaptation, a new and adaptive control parameter, i.e. the crossover rate CR, is presented and when one variable is beyond its boundary, a repair rule is also applied in this paper. The proposed algorithm ADE is validated on several constrained engineering design optimization problems reported in the specialized literature. Compared with respect to algorithms representative of the state-of-the-art in the area, the experimental results show that ADE can obtain good solutions on a test set of constrained optimization problems in engineering design.展开更多

This issue has been formulated...This study presents a robust design method for autonomous photovoltaic (PV)-wind hybrid power systems to obtain an optimum system configuration insensitive to design variable variations. This issue has been formulated as a constraint multi-objective optimization problem, which is solved by a multi-objective genetic algorithm, NSGA-II. Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method, combined with Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS), is applied to evaluate the stochastic system performance. The potential of the proposed method has been demonstrated by a conceptual system design. A comparative study between the proposed robust method and the deterministic method presented in literature has been conducted. The results indicate that the proposed method can find a large mount of Pareto optimal system configurations with better compromising performance than the deterministic method. The trade-off information may be derived by a systematical comparison of these configurations. The proposed robust design method should be useful for hybrid power systems that require both optimality and robustness.展开更多

文摘In this paper,an adaptive neural-network(NN)output feedback optimal control problem is studied for a class of strict-feedback nonlinear systems with unknown internal dynamics,input saturation and state constraints.Neural networks are used to approximate unknown internal dynamics and an adaptive NN state observer is developed to estimate immeasurable states.Under the framework of the backstepping design,by employing the actor-critic architecture and constructing the tan-type Barrier Lyapunov function(BLF),the virtual and actual optimal controllers are developed.In order to accomplish optimal control effectively,a simplified reinforcement learning(RL)algorithm is designed by deriving the updating laws from the negative gradient of a simple positive function,instead of employing existing optimal control methods.In addition,to ensure that all the signals in the closed-loop system are bounded and the output can follow the reference signal within a bounded error,all state variables are confined within their compact sets all times.Finally,a simulation example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.
文摘The genetic algorithm (GA) to the design of electromagnetic micro motor to optimize parameter design. Besides the different oversize from macro motor, the novel structure of micro motor which the rotor is set between the two stators make its design different, too. There are constraint satisfaction problems CSP) in the design. It is shown that the use GA offers a high rate of global convergence and the ability to get the optimal design of electromagnetic micro motors.

文摘This paper proposes a multi-material topology optimization method based on the hybrid reliability of the probability-ellipsoid model with stress constraint for the stochastic uncertainty and epistemic uncertainty of mechanical loads in optimization design.The probabilistic model is combined with the ellipsoidal model to describe the uncertainty of mechanical loads.The topology optimization formula is combined with the ordered solid isotropic material with penalization(ordered-SIMP)multi-material interpolation model.The stresses of all elements are integrated into a global stress measurement that approximates the maximum stress using the normalized p-norm function.Furthermore,the sequential optimization and reliability assessment(SORA)is applied to transform the original uncertainty optimization problem into an equivalent deterministic topology optimization(DTO)problem.Stochastic response surface and sparse grid technique are combined with SORA to get accurate information on the most probable failure point(MPP).In each cycle,the equivalent topology optimization formula is updated according to the MPP information obtained in the previous cycle.The adjoint variable method is used for deriving the sensitivity of the stress constraint and the moving asymptote method(MMA)is used to update design variables.Finally,the validity and feasibility of the method are verified by the numerical example of L-shape beam design,T-shape structure design,steering knuckle,and 3D T-shaped beam.

文摘A mathematical model was developed for layout optimization of truss structures with discrete variables subjected to dynamic stress, dynamic displacement and dynamic stability constraints. By using the quasi-static method, the mathematical model of structure optimization under dynamic stress, dynamic displacement and dynamic stability constraints were transformed into one subjected to static stress, displacement and stability constraints. The optimization procedures include two levels, i.e., the topology optimization and the shape optimization. In each level, the comprehensive algorithm was used and the relative difference quotients of two kinds of variables were used to search the optimum solution. A comparison between the optimum results of model with stability constraints and the optimum results of model without stability constraint was given. And that shows the stability constraints have a great effect on the optimum solutions.

文摘Functional graded cellular structure(FGCS)usually shows superiormechanical behaviorwith lowdensity and high stiffness.With the development of additivemanufacturing,functional graded cellular structure gains its popularity in industries.In this paper,a novel approach for designing functionally graded cellular structure is proposed based on a subdomain parameterized level set method(PLSM)under local volume constraints(LVC).In this method,a subdomain level set function is defined,parameterized and updated on each subdomain independently making the proposed approach much faster and more cost-effective.Additionally,the microstructures on arbitrary two adjacent subdomains can be connected perfectly without any additional constraint.Furthermore,the local volume constraint for each subdomain is applied by virtue of the augmented Lagrange multiplier method.Finally,several numerical examples are given to verify the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed approach in designing the functionally graded cellular structure.From the optimized results,it is also found that the number of local volume constraints has little influence on the convergence speed of the developed approach.

文摘Traditional topology optimization methods may lead to a great reduction in the redundancy of the optimized structure due to unexpected material removal at the critical components.The local failure in critical components can instantly cause the overall failure in the structure.More and more scholars have taken the fail-safe design into consideration when conducting topology optimization.A lot of good designs have been obtained in their research,though limited regarding minimizing structural compliance(maximizing stiffness)with given amount of material.In terms of practical engineering applications considering fail-safe design,it is more meaningful to seek for the lightweight structure with enough stiffness to resist various component failures and/or to meet multiple design requirements,than the stiffest structure only.Thus,this paper presents a fail-safe topology optimization model for minimizing structural weight with respect to stress and displacement constraints.The optimization problem is solved by utilizing the independent continuous mapping(ICM)method combined with the dual sequence quadratic programming(DSQP)algorithm.Special treatments are applied to the constraints,including converting local stress constraints into a global structural strain energy constraint and expressing the displacement constraint explicitly with approximations.All of the constraints are nondimensionalized to avoid numerical instability caused by great differences in constraint magnitudes.The optimized results exhibit more complex topological configurations and higher redundancy to resist local failures than the traditional optimization designs.This paper also shows how to find the worst failure region,which can be a good reference for designers in engineering.

文摘The concrete-steel platform structure is rather complicated because it involves such materials as concrete, reinforcing bars, steel, and so on. If the traditional dimension optimization method is employed, the optimal design of the platform will meet many handicaps, even it cannot be implemented at all. The multilevel optimal design approach is an efficient tool for the solution of large-scale engineering structures. In this paper, this approach is applied to the optimal design of a concrete-steel platform, which is formulated as a system level optimal design problem and a set of uncoupled substructure level optimal design problems. The process of optimization is a process of iteration between system level and substructure level until the objective function converges. An illustrative example indicates that this method is effective in the optimal design of concrete-steel platforms.
文摘Optimizing a vehicle includes testing millions of parameters with hundreds of constraints of the performance. In this article, 162 parameters are optimized with 5 constraints using Lean Optimization combined with Linear Programming. The method converges in this example in about 100 evaluations. This is less than the gradient method needs for its first step.
文摘In many practical structures, physical parameters of material and applied loads have random property.To optimize this kind of structures,an optimum mathematical model was built.This model has reliability constraints on dynamic stress and displacement and upper & lower limits of the design variables. The numerical characteristic of dynamic response and sensitivity of dynamic response based on probability of structure were deduced respectively. By equivalent disposing, the reliability constraints were changed into conventional forms. The SUMT method was used in the optimization process.Two examples illustrate the correctness and practicability of the optimum model and solving approach.

文摘Collaborative optimization (CO) is one of the most widely used methods in multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO), which is an effective methodology to solve modem complex engineering problems. CO consists of two-level optimization problems which are system optimization problem and subspace optimization problem. The architecture of CO can reserve the autonomy of individual disciplines in maximum, while providing a mechanism for coordinating design problem. However, CO has low computation efficiency and is easy to diverge. For the purpose of solving these problems, the former improved methods were studied. The relaxation factors were used to change the system consistency constraints to inequality constraints, or the response surface estimation was used to surrogate the system consistency constraints. However, these methods didn't avoid the computational difficulties very well, furthermore, some new problems arose. The concept of optimum constraint sensitivity was proposed, and the quadratic constraints in system level were reformed. Hence, a new collaborative optimization was developed, which is called system level dynamic constraint collaborative optimization (DCCO). The novel method is able to increase the exchange of information between system level and disciplinary level. The optimization results of each disciplinary optimization can be feedback to system level with the optimum constraint sensitivity. On the basis of the information, the new system level linear dynamic constraints can be constructed; it is better to reflect the effect of disciplinary level optimizations. The system level optimizer can clearly capture the boundary where disciplinary objective functions become zero, and considerably enhance the convergence. Two standard MDO examples were conducted to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of DCCO. The results show that DCCO can save the solving time, and is much better in terms of convergence and robustness, hence, the new method is more efficient.

文摘This study establishes amultiscale andmulti-material topology optimization model for thermoelastic lattice structures(TLSs)consideringmechanical and thermal loading based on the ExtendedMultiscale Finite ElementMethod(EMsFEM).The corresponding multi-material and multiscale mathematical formulation have been established with minimizing strain energy and structural mass as the objective function and constraint,respectively.The Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization(SIMP)interpolation scheme has been adopted to realize micro-scale multi-material selection of truss microstructure.The modified volume preserving Heaviside function(VPHF)is utilized to obtain a clear 0/1 material of truss microstructure.Compared with the classic topology optimization of single-material TLSs,multi-material topology optimization can get a better structural design of the TLS.The effects of temperatures,size factor,and mass fraction on optimization results have been presented and discussed in the numerical examples.
文摘Differential evolution (DE) algorithm has been shown to be a simple and efficient evolutionary algorithm for global optimization over continuous spaces, and has been widely used in both benchmark test functions and real-world applications. This paper introduces a novel mutation operator, without using the scaling factor F, a conventional control parameter, and this mutation can generate multiple trial vectors by incorporating different weighted values at each generation, which can make the best of the selected multiple parents to improve the probability of generating a better offspring. In addition, in order to enhance the capacity of adaptation, a new and adaptive control parameter, i.e. the crossover rate CR, is presented and when one variable is beyond its boundary, a repair rule is also applied in this paper. The proposed algorithm ADE is validated on several constrained engineering design optimization problems reported in the specialized literature. Compared with respect to algorithms representative of the state-of-the-art in the area, the experimental results show that ADE can obtain good solutions on a test set of constrained optimization problems in engineering design.
文摘This study presents a robust design method for autonomous photovoltaic (PV)-wind hybrid power systems to obtain an optimum system configuration insensitive to design variable variations. This issue has been formulated as a constraint multi-objective optimization problem, which is solved by a multi-objective genetic algorithm, NSGA-II. Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) method, combined with Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS), is applied to evaluate the stochastic system performance. The potential of the proposed method has been demonstrated by a conceptual system design. A comparative study between the proposed robust method and the deterministic method presented in literature has been conducted. The results indicate that the proposed method can find a large mount of Pareto optimal system configurations with better compromising performance than the deterministic method. The trade-off information may be derived by a systematical comparison of these configurations. The proposed robust design method should be useful for hybrid power systems that require both optimality and robustness.
