Misuse of Teaching Gesture from the Perspective of Multi-modal Discourse Analysis and Its Solutions

Based on the teaching video of middle school English teachers, through observation and analysis, it puts forward the problem of less use, wrong use and abuse in the use of teachers' teaching gestures in middle school English teaching. And then it puts forward corresponding solutions from three aspects: concept, theory and practice. Hoping to provide further reference to the complementary role of teaching gesture and teaching discourse.

Application of Schema Theory within Discourse Analysis

Researches on discourse analysis have been broadly conducted from various perspectives in linguistics. Many of them focus on analyzing the discourse with respect to cohesion, coherence, and the co-operative principle. This paper, however, attempts at the discourse coherence and the understanding of conversational implicature through the application of schema theory in doing discourse analysis.

A survey of multi-modal learning theory

Deep multi-modal learning,a rapidly growing field with a wide range of practical applications,aims to effectively utilize and integrate information from multiple sources,known as modalities.Despite its impressive empirical performance,the theoretical foundations of deep multi-modal learning have yet to be fully explored.In this paper,we will undertake a comprehensive survey of recent developments in multi-modal learning theories,focusing on the fundamental properties that govern this field.Our goal is to provide a thorough collection of current theoretical tools for analyzing multi-modal learning,to clarify their implications for practitioners,and to suggest future directions for the establishment of a solid theoretical foundation for deep multi-modal learning.

The Application of Multimodal Discourse Analysis Theory in the College English Teaching

Nowadays, the multimodal discourse analysis theory becomes increasingly important in the language teaching. A Pragmatic Analysis of Discourse Connectives in the Framework of Relevance Theory

Discourse connectives can be dealt with in relevance-theoretic terms, as indicators of types of relevance. These connectives can be used to constrain the interpretation of an utterance. They are analyzed in a broad classification outlined in discourse connectives which introduce contextual implications, which are concerned with strengthening and which introduce denials. A relevance based approach to discourse is a more adequate framework than a coherence based one for the analysis of discourse connectives.

Discourse Analysis of Political Speech Based on Appraisal Theory

Appraisal theory is developed based on Halliday's interpersonal system theory, and it has been applied to the discourseanalysis of different genres of texts, like commercial, historical, and autobiographical discourses. However, the use of appraisal the-ory in the analysis of political speech is rare. In this paper, appraisal theory is employed to analyze Ivanka Trump's speech with aquantitative analysis, aiming to reveal that how interpersonal meanings can be conveyed through language in political speech.

Culturally-loaded Chinese Discourse of Gu-qin and Its Inspiration to Translation——Based on a Maxim from a Chinese Classics The Roots of Wisdom

Inspired by one of the maxims in a Chinese classics entitled The Roots of Wisdom,the present paper borrows the typical culturally-loaded Chinese discourses of Gu-qin — "stringed lute" and "non-stringed lute"—to add to the literary translation terminology and to enrich some Chinese literary translation theories.On the basis of analyzing some related theories in linguistics,pragmatics,aesthetics and communication which show different perspectives relevant with the study of translation,the present paper offers a new angle to illustrate how the Chinese discourses of Gu-qin,rich in cultural implications,can best describe translation and bring new vigor and vitality into the diversity and further expansion of the field of translation research.

Discourse Markers and Pragmatic Inference

Discourse markers have been studied within the relevance theoretical framework in this paper. According to relevance theory, every act of ostensive communication communicates a presumption of its own optimal relevance. The communicator, who is aiming at optimal relevance, must direct the audience to a particular set of assumptions by using discourse markers. Whereas, from the audience＇s point of view, discourse markers can minimize his contextual assumptions in looking for relevance, thus the pragmatic inferential process will be much easier.

A Corpus-Based Critical Discourse Analysis of Trump and Biden Administrations’China Policies

The theory of proximization is an effective discourse strategy to study the speaker’s ability to achieve his own legitimacy or reinforce the other’s illegitimacy,and its superiority can be maximized by means of quantitative and comparative analysis.In this study,we collected reports on Trump’s and Biden’s policies on China to build two small corpora,with a total of 11,030 words in the Trump corpus and 17,566 words in the Biden corpus.The critical discourse analysis is combined with proximization theory.With the help of BFSU Qualitative Coder 1.2,Antconc 3.5.7,and Log-Likelihood and Chi-Square Calculator 1.0,a critical cognitive score of the relevant discourse was conducted from the perspective of proximization theory.It has been found that:(1)Both Trump and Biden administrations resort to a large number of spatial proximization strategies to build ODCs converging to IDCs with China as the ODC,posing a threat to internal physical IDCs;(2)in the use of temporal proximization strategy,both administrations use primarily modal verbs and various entities to construct ODCs that extend indefinitely into the present and future,emphasizing the urgency and the threat of the effect and reinforcing the legitimacy of their actions;(3)in terms of axiological proximization strategy,the two administrations differ greatly from each other,indicating that there are still discursive biases.

Political Discourse Translation from a Register Perspective

Recently,register theory has been largely adopted in translation studies.It can better avoid subjective factors in translation in perspective of register.It can also evaluate"faithfulness"of translated text in a rigorous way.In the paper,register theory is introduced to political discourse translation.In Halliday's systemic functional grammar,he defines"register"as the context of situation.And there are three variables of register,respectively,field,tenor and mode.Field means what is taking place in the discourse.By tenor,it refers to who is taking part in the discourse,i.e.participant.As for mode of discourse,it means what the language will do for the participants in the context of situation.The paper aims to discuss the guiding role that register theory has to political discourse translation practice through field,tenor and mode.

A Social Semiotic Approach to the Multimodal Discourse of an Advertisement of “Vivo”

Multimodal Discourse Analysis which is based on the Systematic Functional Linguistic Theory has been hotly discussed in the field of linguistics and social semiotics recently.Based on Kress and Van Leeuween s the Grammar of Visual Design,this paper analyzes the advertisement of Vivo from the representational meaning,interactive meaning and compositional meaning of the images.This reveals the expressional function of the images as a kind of social semiotics.

Predicting Simplified Thematic Progression Pattern for Discourse Analysis

The pattern of thematic progression,reflecting the semantic relationships between contextual two sentences,is an important subject in discourse analysis.We introduce a new corpus of Chinese news discourses annotated with thematic progression information and explore some computational methods to automatically extracting the discourse structural features of simplified thematic progression pattern(STPP)between contextual sentences in a text.Furthermore,these features are used in a hybrid approach to a major discourse analysis task,Chinese coreference resolution.This novel approach is built up via heuristic sieves and a machine learning method that comprehensively utilizes both the top-down STPP features and the bottom-up semantic features.Experimental results on the intersection of the CoNLL-2012 task shared dataset and the CDTC corpus demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

The Functions of Discourse Markers in Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting

The term “discourse markers”(DMs in short) was raised in the 1970s and 1980s. Fraser, a linguist, believes DMs have no truth-conditional meaning which means DMs do not change the prepositional meaning of the sentence. He classifies DMs into three categories: discourse topic markers, discourse activity markers, and message relationship markers. It can be concluded that in conference interpreting, DMs explicit internal structures in three aspects: parallel relation, contractive relation, and elaborative relation based on the analysis of DMs in rendition of Premier Li Keqiang’s press conference from 2014 to 2017.

Positive Discourse Analysis of Hillary Clinton＇ s Concession Address

As a new field in the Discourse Analysis, Positive Discourse Analysis （PDA） is increasingly arousing more attention of linguistic scholars at home and abroad. However, in the field of the concession addresses, the studies on this kind of political text are limited. The winners of presidential election always draw much attention from the world and their speeches, for example, presidential inaugural address has been a hot study topic of linguistics. Nevertheless, the losers of presidential election are always neglected by the world and the study on concession address is scarce and rare. Therefore, the meaning of study on the concession speech helps fill the gap of the discourse analysis. This thesis applies the PDA under the framework of appraisal theory to analyze five concession speeches with a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches. This study aims to complement CDA （Critical Discourse Analysis） to emphasize positive social construction of political discourse.
