With the progress of the times and the leap of science and technology,the application of brick materials and the research on the brick skin in modern architectural design have shown a dual-track development trend of returning to tradition and innovation.Based on the core collection database resources of Web of Science and the CiteSpace visual analysis tool,this paper constructed and analyzed the spatio-temporal map of keyword co-occurrence network,cluster structure,mutation phenomenon,time course and regional distribution map of building brick skin research.The study revealed that in recent years,the research on brick materials has spanned the study of single material properties and extensively involved in the broad world of construction,especially in the integration of green energy-saving technology,the innovation of fine construction technology of brick skin,and the frontier exploration of digital technology in brick masonry,which has shown particularly significant research vitality and development potential. 展开更多

Phase change materials(PCMs)are an interesting technology due to their high density and isothermal behavior during phase change.Phase change material plays a major role in the energy saving of the buildings,which is greatly aided by the incorporation of phase change material into building products such as bricks,cement,gypsum board,etc.In this study,an experiment has been conducted with three identical small chambers made up of normal,grooved and PCM-treated grooved bricks.Before the inclusion of PCM in grooved bricks,PCM material behavior has been studied by different techniques such as DSC,TG/DTA,SEM,and XRD.Thermal properties and thermal stability were investigated by differential scanning calorimeter(DSC)and thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA)respectively.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and X-ray diffraction(XRD)were used to determine the microstructure and crystalloid phase of the PCM before and after the accelerated thermal cycling test(0,60,120).These three identical model rooms built were exposed at a temperature just above 40°C with a heater.When the maximum outdoor temperature was 40-41°C,then the temperature of the PCM-treated grooved chamber was 32-33°C.The PCM-treated wall was tested and compared with a conventional and grooved wall.The difference between the PCM-treated grooved chamber and the untreated one was 8-9°C.PCM-treated bricks provided more efficient internal heat retention in summer when the outside temperature increased. 展开更多

The main goal is to present the potentialities of the various building blocks, which combined with Shape grammar can contribute to the creative process, particularly for the formal composition in the field of Architecture, Urbanism and Design. The methodology is based on a literature review and reflections derived from the observations of the use of the building blocks during experiments carried out in the scope of research with students of the undergraduate course in Architecture and Urbanism. Starting from the discussions proposed by George Stiny on design with Froebel’s buildings gifts and from experiments with other building blocks, such as Archbricks, it is found that building blocks have their own vocabulary and rules, which can be appropriated and exploited by designers in the construction of new shape grammars. 展开更多

Heat transfer analysis was carried out using MATLAB? partial differential equation toolbox. Regular and staggered hole arrangements were studied. Results showed that four staggered holed interlocking bricks were effective in thermal resistance into the bricks and increasing the holes beyond four did not give any thermal resistance advantage. For the conventional bricks staggered holes did not give any thermal resistance advantage but the four-holed bricks were also adjudged to be effective in thermal resistance into the brick surface. Increasing the number of holes beyond four in conventional bricks did give some thermal resistivity advantage but very minimal. Structural strengths of holed bricks were not considered in this study. 展开更多

In mountainous areas, geological disasters carrying large boulders can cause severe damage to the widely used masonry buildings due to the high impact forces. To better understand the damage of brick masonry buildings under the impact of boulders, a "block-joint" model is developed using threedimensional discontinuous deformation analysis(3-D DDA) to simulate the behaviour of the "brick-mortar" structure. The "block-joint" model is used to capture not only the large displacement and deformation of individual bricks but also the large-scale sliding and opening along the mortar between the bricks. The linear elastic constitutive model is applied to account for the non-plastic deformation behaviour of brick materials. Furthermore, the mechanical characteristics of the mortar are represented using the Mohr-Coulomb and Drucker-Prager criteria. To propose safe structural design schemes and effective reinforcement for brick masonry buildings, seven construction techniques are considered, includingdifferent grades of brick and mortar, effective shear areas and reinforced members. The proposed 3-D DDA model is used to analyse the velocity distribution and the key point displacements of the brick masonry building under the impact of boulders. The results show that upgrading the brick and mortar, increasing the wall thickness, making full use of the wall thickness, and adding a circular beam and structural column are very effective approaches for improving the impact resistance of brick masonry buildings. 展开更多

Study on Properties of Blue-Brick Masonry Materials for Historical Buildings

There are a large number of historic buildings which were mainly made of blue-brick masonry in today’s world.However,for the natural and man-made reasons,these historic buildings have been damaged in different degrees.In order to protect historic buildings more scientifically and learn about the preservation state of existing historic buildings,it is necessary to ascertain the material properties of blue brick in historic buildings.The article takes the blue bricks of historical buildings in Kaifeng area of the Central Plains as an example to study.Through the analysis of physical properties,X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy,X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy of blue brick specimens,the physical properties such as the apparent density,moisture content,porosity,and material structure composition are understood.The results show that the apparent density of blue brick is 1.64 g/cm^(3),the moisture content is 10.23%,the 24 h atmospheric water absorption is 17.86%,and the porosity is 20.99%.The smaller the apparent density is,the larger the porosity is,and the water absorption performance is better.From the microscopic point of view,bonding ability between blue brick mineral particles is relatively weak.The pores between skeletons are large and the pore structure is obvious.From the perspective of material phase,the elements of blue brick are mainly O,Si,Al,Fe,and the composition of blue brick is mainly composed of quartz and feldspar.The softening coefficient of blue brick is 0.80,and the deformation and stability of the structure should be paid special attention in the rainy season or wet environment.Through the frost test,there are salt substances in the internal pores of the brick,and the surface of the blue brick is eroded and pulverized.In this paper,the experimental process and analysis methods for testing the material properties of blue brick can provide reference for the research on the material properties of the same kind of blue-brick masonry in historic buildings and masonry relics.The relevant material property parameters obtained in this paper can provide guidance for making protection schemes and scientific repairs for historic buildings in Central China,enrich the evaluation criteria for maintaining and reinforcing historic buildings,and provide theoretical support for studying the damage and health detection technology related to historic buildings. 展开更多

Globalized cultures,imaginaries,and economies are often matched to the standardization of building approaches.However,solutions that are not tailored for a specific context tend to entail environmental,economic,and social issues.Throughout human history,vernacular wisdom has produced interesting low-energy and climate-responsive architectures all around the globe:These can be seen as interesting examples in an era of global warming and overall uncertainty;at the same time,they represent accessible sustainable solutions in deprived areas of the world as well as in wealthier areas.The experience of participatory design and building process is here presented,carried on in a rural area of El Salvador,Central America.A sanitary facility for a school is designed and realized after the collectively desired recovery and improvement of one of the fruits of local vernacular wisdom in building design,i.e.,the adobe earth brick.Some potentials and limits of such experience as well as of the used technology are reviewed in the perspective of affordable and ecologically sustainable housing and settlements in the area. 展开更多

This paper presents a comparison of the seismic forces generated from a Modal Response Spectrum Analysis (MRSA) by applying the provisions of two building codes, the 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC) and the 2000-2009 International Building Code (IBC), to the most common ordinary residential buildings of standard occupancy. Considering IBC as the state of the art benchmark code, the primary concern is the safety of buildings designed using the UBC as compared to those designed using the IBC. A sample of four buildings with different layouts and heights was used for this comparison. Each of these buildings was assumed to be located at four different geographical sample locations arbitrarily selected to represent various earthquake zones on a seismic map of the USA, and was subjected to code-compliant response spectrum analyses for all sample locations and for five different soil types at each location. Response spectrum analysis was performed using the ETABS software package. For all the cases investigated, the UBC was found to be significantly more conservative than the IBC. The UBC design response spectra have higher spectral accelerations, and as a result, the response spectrum analysis provided a much higher base shear and moment in the structural members as compared to the IBC. The conclusion is that ordinary office and residential buildings designed using UBC 1997 are considered to be overdesigned, and therefore they are quite safe even according to the IBC provisions. 展开更多

In 2011,the Danish government published an energy strategy for Denmark where one of the main targets are that Denmark should be a fossil-free society by 2050.Calculations show,that in order to reach this goal it is necessary to reduce the energy consumption of the existing building stock by 50 % on average.Since a 50 % reduction is obviously not possible for all buildings,those that can should aim for a so-called “deep energy renovation”,i.e.reducing the energy consumption to a level corresponding to that of new buildings or even more.This paper describes two case studies where multi-story apartment buildings have undergone deep energy renovation.“Traneparken” where the expected energy use after renovation aimed at a level corresponding to that of a new building according to the Danish Building Regulations from 2015.“Sems Have” where the aim was to go even further and meet the requirements expected for new buildings in 2020,i.e.corresponding to the Danish “nearly zero energy”-definition according to the EPBD.The paper reports on calculations and measurements of energy savings,the economy of the projects and looks at the added benefits or co-benefits that residents,housing association and society in general have achieved in addition to significant energy savings. 展开更多

Four different buildings constructed with brick, glass, stone, and gypsum are taken into account to study the difference in temperature of the indoor and outdoor environments. Also, this paper explores the heat conducted by walls of different materials with different thicknesses. In addition, survey is conducted among the residents of Jeddah to know their perspective about thermal comfort of buildings. From the study, it is found that building envelope constructed with glass is more effective compared to envelope constructed with other materials of with least thickness of wall. Also, it is found that the envelope constructed with brick is more effective in absorbing the heat provided the thickness of the walls remains the same. 展开更多

Building construction using cement bricks on the one hand,and mud bricks on the other hand,presents problems of resistance and durability in the face of natural weathering in our country(Republic of Guinea).These difficulties could be linked to non-compliance with standards and the failure to master certain physico-chemical,mechanical and technical parameters when constructing a building.In order to remedy this problem,a series of studies were carried out on samples of mud bricks used in the construction of century-old straw hut buildings in the urban commune of Kouroussa(Republic of Guinea).To this end,the compressive strength of the brick samples was assessed either:0.10 MPa,and sensory techniques of certain characteristics were carried out to evaluate the cohesion of the elements in the brick samples,such as:coward boule technique,hand washing test,withdrawal of a soil(pellet or ring test)and of the jar test.The physico-chemical analyses methods were carried out using XRF(X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry),granulometry and Atterberg limits in accordance with NF P 94-051.These results showed a high insoluble residue content(49.9%)and the sample had a clay-like appearance with a low PI(Plasticity Index)=8%.This study could be an alternative guide for the authorities in charge of housing and construction in the Kouroussa prefecture(Republic of Guinea).because,the majority of houses in Upper Guinea are built with mud raw bricks or fired bricks. 展开更多

为提高我国农村砌体房屋的抗震性能水平,采用高延性混凝土(HDC)条带加固的方法,设计了两个缩尺比为1∶2的砖木结构模型,对加固模型与未加固模型进行振动台同台对比试验。对比分析了地震作用下两个模型结构的加速度响应、位移响应、扭转... 为提高我国农村砌体房屋的抗震性能水平,采用高延性混凝土(HDC)条带加固的方法,设计了两个缩尺比为1∶2的砖木结构模型,对加固模型与未加固模型进行振动台同台对比试验。对比分析了地震作用下两个模型结构的加速度响应、位移响应、扭转效应和破坏形态,并对其抗震性能进行评估。试验结果表明:单层砖木结构农房的整体抗震性能较差,结构的自振频率低、位移反应较大,扭转效应明显,在8度设防地震作用下接近倒塌;经HDC条带加固的模型结构自振频率增大,位移反应相比未加固模型更小,山墙外闪现象得到明显控制,结构扭转效应的破坏作用明显减轻,在9度罕遇地震作用下HDC面层只出现轻微受损,可达到“大震可修”的性能目标。采用HDC条带加固法可有效延缓结构在强震作用下的刚度退化,增加结构的耐损伤能力,并有效提高此类砌体结构的整体抗震能力。 展开更多

为分析泸定县6.8级地震中村镇建筑的震害,对震中附近的磨西镇、得妥镇、燕子沟镇的村镇建筑开展了震害调查,总结村镇结构中砖木结构、砖混结构和框架结构的典型震害特征,对震中附近评估烈度为Ⅸ度区域的村镇建筑进行地震破坏等级评估、... 为分析泸定县6.8级地震中村镇建筑的震害,对震中附近的磨西镇、得妥镇、燕子沟镇的村镇建筑开展了震害调查,总结村镇结构中砖木结构、砖混结构和框架结构的典型震害特征,对震中附近评估烈度为Ⅸ度区域的村镇建筑进行地震破坏等级评估、统计与分析。调查结果显示:整体上,砖木结构及砖混结构是此次地震中震害现象较为明显和严重的结构形式;框架结构震害整体较轻,基本未破坏数量占调研框架结构的72.5%。砖木结构及砖混结构震害特征主要表现为地基的不均匀沉降、墙体开裂、楼(屋)面破坏、非结构构件破坏及整体倒塌;框架结构震害特征主要表现为梁、柱及节点破坏、非结构构件的破坏。此次地震中,砖木结构、砖混结构严重破坏及倒塌的房屋占该两类房屋整体震害的比例较高,严重破坏砖木及砖混结构约为框架结构的6倍,且框架结构未出现倒塌,基本未破坏的框架结构占比较高。3种结构抗震能力由强到弱依次为:框架结构、砖混结构、砖木结构。针对不同结构形式的震害特征,应通过抗震加固全面提升可修复震害房屋及既有农房抗震防灾能力,以提高村镇建筑整体力学性能,减少地震伤亡及损失。 展开更多
