Chaha is one of the low-resource languages, which suffers from the problem of resource insufficiency and some of its phonological, morphological, and orthographic features challenge the development and initiatives in the area of ASR. By considering these challenges, this study is the first endeavor, which analyzed the characteristics of the language, prepared speech corpus, and developed different ASR systems. A small 3-hour read speech corpus was prepared and transcribed. Different basic and rounded phone unit-based speech recognizers were explored using multilingual deep neural network (DNN) modeling methods. The experimental results demonstrated that all the basic phone and rounded phone unit-based multilingual models outperformed the corresponding unilingual models with the relative performance improvements of 5.47% to 19.87% and 5.74% to 16.77%, respectively. The rounded phone unit-based multilingual models outperformed the equivalent basic phone unit-based models with relative performance improvements of 0.95% to 4.98%. Overall, we discovered that multilingual DNN modeling methods are profoundly effective to develop Chaha speech recognizers. Both the basic and rounded phone acoustic units are convenient to build Chaha ASR system. However, the rounded phone unit-based models are superior in performance and faster in recognition speed over the corresponding basic phone unit-based models. Hence, the rounded phone units are the most suitable acoustic units to develop Chaha ASR systems.展开更多

Although many researchers in the past have endeavored to solve the OOV term translation problems, but none existing methods offer definition or context information of OOV terms. Furthermore, non-existing methods focus on cross-language definition retrieval for OOV terms. Never the less, it has always been so difficult to evaluate the correctness of an OOV term translation without domain specific knowledge and correct references. Our English definition ranking method differentiate the types of OOV terms, and applies different methods for translation extraction. Our English definition ranking method also extracts multilingual context information and monolingual definitions of OOV terms. To address this challenge, we have developed a computational grammar for the Kikamba language within the multilingual Grammatical Framework (GF) toolkit. GF uses the Interlingua rule-based translation approach. To develop the grammar, we used the morphology driven strategy. Therefore, we first developed regular expressions for morphology inflection and thereafter developed the syntax rules. Evaluation of the grammar was done using one hundred sentences in both English and Kikamba languages. The results were an encouraging four n-gram BLEU score of 83.05% and the Position independent error rate (PER) of 10.96%. Finally, we have made a contribution to the language technology resources for Kikamba including multilingual machine translation, a morphology analyzer, a computational grammar which provides a platform for development of multilingual applications and the ability to generate a variety of bilingual corpora for Kikamba for all languages currently defined in GF, making it easier to experiment with data driven approaches.展开更多

Due to the complex multiethnic and multilingual situation in Cameroon, multilingualism is the factual norm for the population. Besides English and French, numerous indigenous languages, especially Cameroon Pidgin English as the most significant lingual Franca of the country, are also widely used. Some demographics and sociolinguistic survey even reveal the evidence that this pidginized variety of English has occupied its indispensable position in almost all the aspects in the Cameroonian social life. Since this variety of English has long been used in the country for over 500 years, it has formed distinctive features in phonology, lexis as well as in grammar. This nativized language is now increasingly accepted as distinctive Cameroonian contributions to the world Englishes. Will the spread of this variety stand in the way of the learning "standard" English, or should this unstandardized variety be discouraged or banned in order to preserve the authenticity of English language? English as an international language teaching thus is confronted with new challenges and pondering about its future.展开更多

It has important applications in knowledge navigation, semantic annotation and semantic search. It is a useful instrument to study the multilingual taxonomy generated automatically under the dynamic information environment in which massive amounts of information are processed and found. Multilingual taxonomy is the core component of the multilingual thesaurus or ontology. This paper presents two methods of bilingual generated taxonomy: Cross-language terminology clustering and mixed-language based terminology clustering. According to our experimental results of terminology clustering related to four specific subject domains, we found that if the parallel corpus is used to cluster multilingual terminologies, the method of using mixed-language based terminology clustering outperforms that of using the cross-language terminology clustering.展开更多

文摘Cameroon, a Western African coastal country, with a heritage of its history of being a previous colony of both British and French from 1916 to 1960, advocates a bilingual language policy in which English and French both serve as official languages. English as an international language teaching thus is confronted with new challenges and pondering about its future.

文摘Taxonomy denotes the hierarchical structure of a knowledge organization system. According to our experimental results of terminology clustering related to four specific subject domains, we found that if the parallel corpus is used to cluster multilingual terminologies, the method of using mixed-language based terminology clustering outperforms that of using the cross-language terminology clustering.
