Friction is...The aim of this article was to provide a systematic method to perform molecular dynamics simulotion or evaluation for nano-scale interfacial friction behavior between two kinds of materials in MEMS design. Friction is an important factor affecting the performance and reliability of MEMS. The model of the nano-scale interracial friction behavior between two kinds of materials was presented based on the Newton' s equations of motion. The Morse potential function was selected for the model. The improved Verlet algorithm was employed to resolve the model, the atom trajectories and the law of the interfacial friction behavior. Comparisons with experimental data in other paper confirm the validity of the model. Using the model it is possible to simulate or evaluate the importance of different factors for designing of the nano-scale interfacial friction behavior between two kinds of materials in MEMS.展开更多

The antiwear and friction reducing abilities of the nano-silicates,as w...Nano-metric magnesium silicate and zinc silicate with particle size of about 50-70nm were prepared in water by the method of chemical deposition. The antiwear and friction reducing abilities of the nano-silicates,as well as their composites with oleic acid tri-ethanolamine(OATEA) ,were evaluated on a four-ball friction tester. The topographies and tribochemical features of the worn surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscope(SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscope(XPS) . Results show that nano-silicates alone provide poor antiwear and friction reducing abilities in water,but exhibits excellent synergism with OATEA in reducing friction and wear. The synergism in reducing friction and wear between nanosilicates and OATEA does exist almost regardless of particle sizes and species,and may be attributed,on one hand,to the formation of an adsorption film of OATEA,and,on the other hand,to the formation of tribochemical species of silicon dioxide and iron oxides on the friction surfaces. Tribo-reactions and tribo-adsorptions of nano-silicates and OATEA would produce hereby an effective composite boundary lubrication film,which could efficiently enhance the anti-wear and friction-reducing abilities of water.展开更多

The microstructure of the fabricated surface nanocomposites is examined using optical microscopy(OM) and scanning electron microscope(SEM) for distribution of TiB_2 nano reinforcement particles, thickness of nano composite layer formed on the Aluminum alloy substrate and fracture features. The depth of surface nano composite layer is measured as 3683.82 m m along the cross section of stir zone of nano composite perpendicular to FSP. It was observed that increase in volume percentage of TiB_2 particles, the microhardness is increased up to132 Hv and it is greater than as-received Al alloy's microhardness(104 Hv). It is also observed that at 4volume percentage higher tensile properties exhibited as compared with the 2 and 8 vol. %. It is found that high wear resistance exhibited at 4 volume percentage as-compared with the 2 and 8 vol. %. The observed wear and mechanical properties are interrelated with microstructure, fractography and worn morphology.展开更多

The friction and wear resistance of these composites is found to increase with increasing filler concentration. The micro-tribological behavior of ...A novel super-hydrophobic stearic acid(STA)film with a water contact angle of 166° was prepared by chemical adsorption on aluminum wafer coated with polyethyleneimine(PEI)film. The micro-tribological behavior of the super-hydrophobic STA monolayer was compared with that of the polished and PEI-coated Al surfaces.The effect of relative humidity on the adhesion and friction was investigated as well.It was found that the STA monolayer showed decreased friction,while the adhesive force was greatly decreased by increasing the surface roughness of the Al wafer to reduce the contact area between the atomic force microscope(AFM)tip and the sample surface to be tested.Thus the friction and adhesion of the Al wafer was effectively decreased by generating the STA monolayer, which indicated that it could be feasible and rational to prepare a surface with good adhesion resistance and lubricity by properly controlling the surface morphology and the chemical composition.Both the adhesion and friction decreased as the relative humidity was lowered from 65% to 10%,though the decrease extent became insignificant for the STA monolayer.展开更多
The Kevlar/polytetrafluroethylene(Kevlar/PTFE) fabric composite can be used as a self-lubricating liner of the self-lubricating bearing.Many types of nano-particles can improve the tribological performance of the po...The Kevlar/polytetrafluroethylene(Kevlar/PTFE) fabric composite can be used as a self-lubricating liner of the self-lubricating bearing.Many types of nano-particles can improve the tribological performance of the polymer-based composite.Unfortunately,up to now,published work on the effect of nano-particles on the tribological performance of the fabric composite which can be used as a self-lubricating liner is quite scarce.Therefore,for the purpose of exploring a way to significantly improve the tribological performance of the fabric composite,the tribological performance of the Kevlar/PTFE fabric composite filled with nano-titania is evaluated by using the block-on-ring wear tester.The scanning electron microscopy is utilized to observe the morphologies of worn surfaces of the fabric composites and the counterparts.The tensile properties of the composites are evaluated on the universal material testing machine.The test results show that the addition of nano-titania at a proper mass fraction of the matrix resin improves the wear resistance and the tensile strength,decreases the friction coefficient,and makes the wear volume of the composite reach a relative steady state more quickly;plastic deformation and microcutting are important for the wear of the fabric composite;a lubricating layer is formed on the worn surface of the composite during sliding,and the lubricating layer is critical for the tribological performance of the composite;the formation and properties of the lubricating layer are influenced by the nano-titania particles.The proposed study on the effect of nano-titania on the tribological performance of the Kevlar/PTFE fabric composite,especially on the evolution of the worn surface of the composite,provides the basis for further understanding of the influence mechanism of the nano-particles on the tribological performance of the composite and explores a method of improving the tribological performance of the composite.展开更多
