Variant graphene, graphene oxides(GO),and graphene nanoplatelets(GNP)dispersed in blood-based copper(Cu)nanoliquids over a leaning permeable cylinder are the focus of this study. These forms of graphene are highly beneficial in the biological and medical fields for cancer therapy,anti-infection measures, and drug delivery. The non-Newtonian Sutterby(blood-based)hybrid nanoliquid flows are generalized within the context of the Tiwari-Das model to simulate the effects of radiation and heating sources. The governing partial differential equations are reformulated into a nonlinear set of ordinary differential equations using similar transformational expressions. These equations are then transformed into boundary value problems through a shooting technique, followed by the implementation of the bvp4c tool in MATLAB.The influences of various parameters on the model’s nondimensional velocity and temperature profiles, reduced skin friction, and reduced Nusselt number are presented for detailed discussions. The results indicated that Cu-GNP/blood and Cu-GO/blood hybrid nanofluids exhibit the lowest and highest velocity distributions, respectively, for increased nanoparticles volume fraction, curvature parameter,Sutterby fluid parameter,Hartmann number, and wall permeability parameter.Conversely, opposite trends are observed for the temperature distribution for all considered parameters, except the mixed convection parameter.Increases in the reduced skin friction magnitude and the reduced Nusselt number with higher values of graphene/GO/GNP nanoparticle volume fraction are also reported. Finally,GNP is identified as the superior heat conductor, with an average increase of approximately 5%and a peak of 7.8%in the reduced Nusselt number compared to graphene and GO nanoparticles in the Cu/blood nanofluids. 展开更多

The practical applications of magnesium(Mg)alloys are usually beset by their relatively low strength and limited ductility.Herein we attempt to fabricate hexagonal BN nanoplatelet(BNNP)reinforced ZK61 magnesium composites using a combination of spark plasma sintering and friction stir processing. The resulting composites exhibit microstructural characteristics of homogeneous dispersion of BNNP in Mg matrix with refined equiaxed grains and(0002)basal texture roughly surrounding the pin column surface.Transmission electron microscopy observation illustrates that trace amounts of Mg_(3)N_(2)and MgB_(2)form at BNNP-Mg interface,in which Mg_(3)N_(2)locates at the basal plane of a BNNP and MgB_(2)grows at its open edge. The spatial distribution of Mg_(3)N_(2)and MgB_(2)facilitates interfacial wetting and stronger BNNP-Mg interface in such a way that interfacial products act as anchors bonding between them.In comparison with monolithic ZK61 alloy, the BNNP/ZK61 composites display simultaneous improvements in yield strength, hardness and ductility, achieving good strength-ductility balance. This research is expected to shed some light on BNNP potentials for designing and producing magnesium composites with high strength and good ductility. 展开更多

Submicron scale temperature sensors are crucial for a range of applications, particularly in micro and na-noscale environments. One promising solution involves the use of active whispering gallery mode(WGM)microresonators. These resonators can be remotely excited and read out using free-space structures, simplifying the process of sensing. In this study,we present a submicron-scale temperature sensor with a remarkable sensitivity up to 185 pm/℃based on a trian-gular MAPbI3 nanoplatelet(NPL)laser.Notably,as temperature changes, the peak wavelength of the laser line shifts lin-early.This unique characteristic allows for precise temperature sensing by tracking the peak wavelength of the NPL laser. The optical modes are confined within the perovskite NPL,which measures just 85 nm in height, due to total internal reflec-tion.Our NPL laser boasts several key features, including a high Q of~2610 and a low laser threshold of about 19.8μJ·cm^(−2).The combination of exceptional sensitivity and ultra-small size makes our WGM device an ideal candidate for integration into systems that demand compact temperature sensors. This advancement paves the way for significant prog-ress in the development of ultrasmall temperature sensors, opening new possibilities across various fields. 展开更多

The relationship between the thermal/electrical conductivity enhancement in graphite nanoplatelets (GNPs) composites and the properties of filling graphite nanoplatelets is studied. The effective thermal and electrical conductivity enhancements of GNP-oil nanofluids and GNP-polyimide composites are measured. By taking into account the particle shape, the volume fraction, the thermal conductivity of filling particles and the base fluids, the thermal and electrical conductivity enhancements of GNP nanofluids are theoretically predicted by the generalized effective medium theory. Both the nonlinear dependence of effective thermal conductivity on the GNP volume fraction in nanofhiids and the very low percolation threshold for GNP-polyimide composites are well predicted. The theoretical predications are found to be in reasonably good agreement with the experimental data. The generalized effective medium theory can be used for predicting the thermal and electrical properties of GNP composites and it is still available for most of the thermal/electrical modifications in two-phase composites. 展开更多

Effect of graphene nanoplatelets(GNPs)addition on mechanical properties of magnesium–10wt%Titanium(Mg–10Ti)alloy is investigated in current work. The Mg-(10Ti+0.18GNPs)composite was synthesized using the semi powder metallurgy method followed by hot extrusion.Microstructural characterization results revealed the uniform distribution of reinforcement(Ti+GNPs)particles in the matrix, therefore(Ti+GNPs)particles act as an effective reinforcing filler to prevent the deformation.Room temperature tensile results showed that the addition of Ti+GNPs to monolithic Mg lead to increase in 0.2%yield strength(0.2%YS),ultimate tensile strength(UTS),and failure strain.Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM),Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy(EDS)and X-Ray Diffraction(XRD)were used to investigate the surface morphology, elemental dispersion and phase analysis, respectively. 展开更多

The exceptional properties of graphene make it ideal as a reinforcement to enhance the properties of aluminum matrices and this critically depends on uniform dispersion. In this study, the dispersion issue was addressed by sonication and non-covalent surface functionalization of graphite nanoplatelets(GNPs) using two types of surfactant: anionic(sodium dodecyl benzene sulfate(SDBS)) and non-ionic polymeric(ethyl cellulose(EC)). After colloidal mixing with Al powder, consolidation was performed at two sintering temperatures(550 and 620°C). The structure, density, mechanical and wear properties of the nanocomposite samples were investigated and compared with a pure Al and a pure GNPs/Al nanocomposite sample. Noticeably, EC-based 0.5 wt% GNPs/Al samples showed the highest increment of 31% increase in hardness with reduced wear rate of 98.25% at 620°C, while a 22% increase in hardness with reduced wear rate of 96.98% at 550°C was observed, as compared to pure Al. Microstructural analysis and the overall results validate the use of EC-based GNPs/Al nanocomposites as they performed better than pure Al and pure GNPs/Al nanocomposite at both sintering temperatures. 展开更多

More than 90%of surgical patients develop postoper-ative adhesions, and the incidence of hospital re-admissions can be as high as 20%.Current adhesion barriers present limited efficacy due to difficulties in application and incompatibility with minimally invasive interventions. To solve thisclinical limitation,we developed an injectable and sprayable shear-thinning hydrogel barrier(STHB)composed of silicate nanoplatelets and poly(ethylene oxide). We optimized this technology to recover mechanical integrity after stress, enabling its delivery though inject-able and sprayable methods. We also demonstrated limited cell adhesion and cytotoxicity to STHB compositions in vitro. The STHB was then tested in a rodent model of peritoneal injury to determine its e cacy preventing the formation of postoperative adhesions. After two weeks, the peritoneal adhesion index was used as a scoring method to determine the formation of postoperative adhesions, and STHB formulations presented superior e cacy compared to a commercially available adhesion barrier.Histological and immunohistochemical examination showed reduced adhesion formation and minimal immune infiltration in STHB formulations. Our technology demonstrated increased e cacy, ease of use in complex anatomies, and compatibility with di erent delivery methods, providing a robust universal platform to prevent postoperative adhesions in a wide range of surgical interventions. 展开更多

Colloidal CdSe nanoplatelets are thin semiconductor materials with atomic flatness surfaces and one-dimensional strong quantum confinement, and hence they own very narrow and anisotropic emission. Here,we present a polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)assisted transferring method that can pick up single layer CdSe nanoplatelet films self-assembled on a liquid surface and then precisely transfer to a target.By layer-by-layer picking up and transferring, multiple layers of CdSe films can be built up to form CdSe stacks with each single layer having dominant in-plane transition dipole distribution, which both material and energic structures are analogous to traditional multiple quantum wells grown by molecular-beam epitaxy.Additionally, with the great flexibility of colloidal nanoplatelets and this transferring method,CdSe nanoplatelets films can be combined with other materials to form hybrid heterostructures. We transferred a single-layer CdSe film onto WS_(2) flakes, and precisely studied the fast energy transfer rate with controlled CdSe nanoplatelet orientation and by using a streak camera with a ps time resolution. 展开更多

Over the span of years, improvements over various synthesis methods of graphene are constantly pursued to provide safer and more effective alternatives. Though the extraction of graphene through Hummers method is one of the oldest techniques yet it is one of the most suitable methods for the formation of bulk graphene. Graphene can be obtained in the form of reduced Graphite oxide, sometimes also referred as Graphene oxide. The effectiveness of this oxidation process can be evaluated by the magnitude of carbon/oxygen ratio of the obtained graphene. Here, graphene oxide (GO) was prepared by oxidizing the purified natural flake graphite (NFG) by a modified Hummers method. The attempts have been made to synthesize GO having few layers by using a modified Hummers method where the amount of NaNO3 has been decreased, and the amount of KMnO4 is increased. The reaction has been performed in a 9:1 (by volume) mixture of H2SO4/H3PO4. This modification is successful in increasing the reaction yield and reducing the toxic gas evolution while using a varied proportion of KMnO4 and H2SO4 as those required by Hummers method. A new component of K2S2O8 has been introduced to the reaction system to maintain the pH value. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was thereafter extracted by thermal modification of GO. Here, GO has been used as a precursor for graphene synthesis by thermal reduction processes. The results of FTIR and Raman spectroscopy analysis show that the NFG when oxidized by strong oxidants like KMnO4 and NaNO3, introduced oxygen atoms into the graphite layers and formed bonds like C=O, C-H, COOH and C-O-C with the carbon atoms in the graphite layers. The structure and morphology of both GO and rGO were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). 展开更多

The aim of this study is to investigate the dynamic response of axially moving two-layer laminated plates on the Winkler and Pasternak foundations. The upper and lower layers are formed from a bidirectional functionally graded(FG) layer and a graphene platelet(GPL) reinforced porous layer, respectively. Henceforth, the combined layers will be referred to as a two-dimensional(2D) FG/GPL plate. Two types of porosity and three graphene dispersion patterns, each of which is distributed through the plate thickness, are investigated. The mechanical properties of the closed-cell layers are used to define the variation of Poisson’s ratio and the relationship between the porosity coefficients and the mass density. For the GPL reinforced layer, the effective Young’s modulus is derived with the Halpin-Tsai micro-system model, and the rule of mixtures is used to calculate the effective mass density and Poisson’s ratio. The material of the upper 2D-FG layer is graded in two directions, and its effective mechanical properties are also derived with the rule of mixtures. The dynamic governing equations are derived with a first-order shear deformation theory(FSDT) and the von Kármán nonlinear theory. A combination of the dynamic relaxation(DR) and Newmark’s direct integration methods is used to solve the governing equations in both time and space. A parametric study is carried out to explore the effects of the porosity coefficients, porosity and GPL distributions, material gradients, damping ratios, boundary conditions, and elastic foundation stiffnesses on the plate response. It is shown that both the distributions of the porosity and graphene nanofillers significantly affect the dynamic behaviors of the plates. It is also shown that the reduction in the dynamic deflection of the bilayer composite plates is maximized when the porosity and GPL distributions are symmetric. 展开更多

The corrosion resistance and wear resistance of metallic biomaterials are critically important for orthopedic hard-tissue replacement applications because the lack of such properties not only adversely affects their mechanical integrity but also allows the release of wear debris into the human body.In this study, the potential of zirconium(Zr)as an alloying element and graphene nanoplatelets(GNPs)as a nano-reinforcement material were investigated in relation to improving the tribological performance of pure magnesium(Mg).The GNPs-reinforced Mg matrix nanocomposites(MNCs)were fabricated using powder metallurgy. Results indicate that additions of 0.5 wt.%Zr and0.1 wt.%GNPs to Mg matrices significantly improved the wear resistance by 89%and 92%at 200μN load,60%and 80%at 100μN load, and 94%and 93%at 50μN load, respectively,as compared to the wear resistance of pure Mg.The wear depth and coefficient of friction of the MNC containing 0.5 wt.%Zr and 0.1 wt.%GNPs(Mg0.5 Zr0.1 GNPs MNC)were considerably reduced as compared to pure Mg and Mg0.5 Zr.Our results demonstrate that the Mg0.5 Zr0.1 GNPs MNC is promising for orthopedic applications in relation to its excellent tribological performance. 展开更多

A powder thixoforging route combined with slurry based mixing process was proposed to fabricate graphene nanoplatelets(GNPs) reinforced magnesium matrix composites(MgMCs). The originally spherical and ball-milled ZK60 powders were used as matrices, respectively. The mixing of 0.05 wt.% GNPs with the spherical powder led to GNPs clusters and degraded the mechanical properties of the composite. In contrast, with the addition of an optimal content(0.1 wt.%) of GNPs, the composite fabricated from ball-milled powder achieved a joint enhancement in tensile yield strength(52%) and fracture toughness(19%), demonstrating a pronounced strengthening efficiency of 650% and a good balance between strength and toughness. The ball-milled powder endowed the composite with a homogenous distribution of GNPs and a denser microstructure with reduced Mg-Zn eutectics, and the thixoforging process offered a well-bonded Mg/GNP interface, making full use of the strengthening and toughening potential of GNPs. Theoretical predication based on a modified shear-lag model suggested that load transfer dominated the strengthening mechanisms. In-situ tensile tests verified that crack deflection, secondary cracks and GNPs bridging mainly accounted for the toughening mechanisms. A numerical model with consideration of GNPs orientations was also established to understand the toughening effect from GNPs bridging. 展开更多

Lithium–sulfur batteries have great potential for high energy applications due to their high capacities, low cost and eco-friendliness. However, the particularly rapid capacity decay owing to the dissolution and diffusion of polysulfide intermediate into the electrolyte still hamper their practical applications. And the reported preparation procedures to sulfur based cathode materials are often complex, and hence are rather difficult to produce at large scale. Here, we report a simple mechano-chemical sulfurization methodology in vacuum environment applying ball-milling method combined both the chemical and physical interaction for the one-pot synthesis of edge-sulfurized grapheme nanoplatelets with 3D porous foam structure as cathode materials. The optimal sample of 70%S–Gn Ps-48 h(ball-milled 48 h) obtains 13.2 wt% sulfur that chemically bonded onto the edge of Gn Ps. And the assembled batteries exhibit high initial discharge capacities of 1089 mAh/g at 0.1 C and 950 mAh/g at 0.5 C, and retain a stable discharge capacity of 776 mAh/g after 250 cycles at 0.5 C with a high Coulombic efficiency of over 98%. The excellent performance is mainly attributed to the mechano-chemical interaction between sulfur and grapheme nanoplatelets. This definitely triggers the currently extensive research in lithium–sulfur battery area. 展开更多

In this paper the growth mechanism of a Te/Bi2Te3 novel structure is studied by ab-initio calculations. The results show that the growth of Te nanorods is determined by the adsorption energy of Te atoms on different crystalline Te surfaces. The adsorption energy of Te on the Te (001) surface is 3.29 eV, which is about 0.25 eV higher than that of Te on the Te (110). This energy difference makes the preferential growth direction along the 〈 001 〉 direction. In addition, the higher surface energy of Bi2Te3 (110) and the lattice misfit between crystalline Bi2We3 and Te along 〈 001 〉 direction are considered to explain the growth of the Bi2Te3 nanoplatelets, in which Volmer-Weber model is used. The theoretical results are in agreement with experimental observation. 展开更多

Epoxy/graphene nanoplatelets(GNPs) powder coatings were fabricated using ultrasonic predispersion of GNPs and melt-blend extrusion method. The isothermal curing kinetics of epoxy/GNPs powder coating were monitored by means of real-time Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) with a heating cell. The mechanical properties of the epoxy/GNPs cured coatings had been investigated, by evaluating their fracture surfaces with field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) after three-point-bending tests. The thermal stability of the epoxy/GNPs cured coatings was studied by thermo-gravimetric analysis(TGA). The isothermal curing kinetics result showed that the GNPs would not affect the autocatalytic reaction mechanism, but the loading of GNPs below 1.0 wt % additive played a prompting role in the curing of the epoxy/GNPs powder coatings. The fracture strain, fracture toughness and impact resistance of the epoxy/GNPs cured coatings increased dramatically at low levels of GNPs loading(1 wt %), indicating that the GNPs could improve the toughness of the epoxy/GNPs powder coatings. Furthermore, from FE-SEM studies of the fracture surfaces, the possible toughening mechanisms of the epoxy/GNPs cured coatings were proposed. TGA result showed that the incorporation of GNPs improved the thermal stability of the cured coatings. Hence, the GNPs modified epoxy can be an efficient approach to toughen epoxy powder coating along with improving their thermal stability. 展开更多

In aiming to obtain fibers with enhanced thermal and mechanical properties, graphene based textile fibers with 144 filaments were developed using an approach in which the PP/GnP(polypropylene/graphene nanoplatelets)nanocomposite was employed as conductive material in a fiber with circular cross-section geometry. The kinetics of thermal degradation was evaluated by the Broido method using thermogravimetric analysis(TGA).Activation energy was enhanced from 260.6 kJ·mol^-1 to 337.4 kJ·mol^-1 compared to the neat PP.GnP increased the thermal stability of the PP,slowing its degradation by thermal depolymerization.Furthermore, the degree of crystallization declined as the GnP content increased, reducing the tenacity of the yarn, but improving its elastic modulus from 91.9 to 95.9 cN/tex,being a promising alternative to produce smart textiles. In conclusion,it has been confirmed that GnP loading up to 1%(w/w)can be incorporated into polypropylene by melt spinning and that the resulting nanocomposite fibers are suitable for several applications in the textile industry. 展开更多

Graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) are novel nanofillers holding attractive characteristics, including vigorous compatibility with majority polymers, outstanding mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. In this study, the outstanding GNPs filler was reinforced to the epoxy matrix and carbon fabric/epoxy hybrid composite slabs to enrich their mechanical properties. Graphene nanoplatelets of 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 weight percentages were integrated into the epoxy and the physico-mechanical (microstructure, density, tensile, flexural and impact strength) properties were investigated. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of unfilled and 1 wt% GNPs filled carbon fabric/epoxy hybrid composite slabs were investigated. Subsequently, noteworthy improvement in the mechanical properties was conquered for the carbon fabric/epoxy hybrid composites. 展开更多

Microwave absorption (MWA) materials such as graphene nanoplatelet (GNP)/epoxy are mostly used as coatings on existing structures without considering mechanical properties. In this work, we aim to enhance the mechanical strength of the composite for multifunctional potentials. We used carbon fiber (four layers) to reinforce GNP/epoxy composite (2 mm thick) and investigated their multifunctional properties with GNP loading from 3 to 7 wt%. We measured the tensile strength, hardness, and MW absorption (26.5 - 40 GHz) of composite samples. Our results showed an increase in tensile strength to 109.1 ± 7.9 MPa with 7 wt% GNP in the composite from 15.3 MPa for pure epoxy. The hardness of the composites was also substantially enhanced with GNP loading up to 7 wt%. A MW absorption ratio of 72% was attained for the sample with 7 wt% GNP loading near 40 GHz. The homogenous dispersion of GNPs in the matrix reduces the stress concentration and minimizes the influence of the defects. The high MW absorption and large transmission loss together with enhanced mechanical strength provides a novel multifunctional material for potential applications. 展开更多
