Interactions between Intersecting Pedestrian and Vehicle Flows on Roads

The crossing of vehicle flow by pedestrians at either signalized crosswalks or locations away from crosswalks is studied using a car-following model.The model process is constructed,and two safe criterions deciding whether pedestrians begin to cross a road and a rule stopping vehicles at a signal intersection are proposed.Numerical results indicate that the relations of both vehicles’and pedestrians’delays to the width of pedestrian arrival interval are nonlinear;careful pedestrians unnecessarily spend more time to cross a road than aggressive ones;pedestrians crossing near a traffic signal have more influence on their and vehicles’delays.When pedestrians are permitted to cross a road using the gaps between slow vehicles,their delay may increase.

Direct Experimental Evidence of Hole Trapping in Negative Bias Temperature Instability

Negative bias temperature instability(NBTI)in ultrathin-plasma-nitrided-oxide(PNO)based p-type metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors(pMOSFETs)is investigated at temperatures ranging from 220 K to 470 K.It is found that the threshold voltage VT degradation below 290 K is dominated by the hole trapping process.Further studies unambiguously show that this process is unnecessarily related to nitrogen but the incorporation of nitrogen in the gate dielectric increases the probability of hole trapping in the NBTI process as it introduces extra trap states located in the upper half of the Si band gap.The possible hole trapping mechanism in NBTI stressed PNO pMOSFETs is suggested by taking account of oxygen and nitrogen related trap centers.

Rapid Unconscious Acquisition of Conditioned Fear with Low-Spatial-Frequency but Emotionally Neutral Stimuli

It has long been proposed that emotionally“prepared”(i.e.,fear-related)stimuli are privileged in the unconscious acquisition of conditioned fear.However,as fear processing is suggested to highly depend on the coarse,low-spatial-frequency(LSF)components of the fear-related stimuli,it is plausible that LSF may play a unique role in the unconscious fear conditioning even with emotionally neutral stimuli.Here,we provided empirical evidence that,following classical fear conditioning,an invisible,emotionally neutral conditioned stimulus(CS+)with LSF,but not with high spatial frequency(HSF),can rapidly elicit stronger skin conductance responses(SCRs)and larger pupil diameters than its CS−counterpart.In comparison,consciously perceived emotionally neutral CS+with LSF and HSF elicited comparable SCRs.Taken together,these results support that the unconscious fear conditioning does not necessarily entail emotionally prepared stimuli but prioritizes LSF information processing and highlight the crucial distinctions between the unconscious and the conscious fear learning.These findings not only coincide with the postulation that a rapid,spatial-frequency-dependent subcortical route is engaged in unconscious fear processing but also suggest the existence of multiple routes for conscious fear processing.

A Comprehensive Approach to Investigate CO_(2)Reduction Electrocatalysts at High Current Densities

As electrochemical CO_(2)reduction studies progress from beaker or H-cell devices operating at low current densities to gas diffusion electrode(GDE)-based devices that sustain high reaction rates and provide an avenue toward commercialization,the overall system becomes significantly more complex.While the current densities may vary for the different approaches,it is essential to maintain the same scientific rigor when analyzing these systems.The mass transfer optimizations used in GDE based approaches necessarily add complexity and provide new challenges that need to be analyzed and overcome in terms of both engineering as well as analysis techniques.This Account puts into perspective our recent works analyzing high current density CO_(2)electrolysis performance via a comprehensive investigation of the entire system.In particular,we show the importance of monitoring(i)the gas flow rates at the outlet of the cathodic compartment,(ii)the anodic gas composition for CO_(2)/O_(2)ratio,and(iii)pH variations in the electrolyte.A rigorous analysis of these parameters allows us to achieve a complete carbon balance,in addition to accounting for a total of 100%Faradaic efficiency.By analyzing both the cathode outlet and anodic CO_(2):O_(2)ratio,we demonstrate that these methods can be used to self-validate results providing robustness.We show that this analysis approach holds for both a zero-gap membrane electrode assembly device and a flowing-catholyte device.In addition,a comprehensive monitoring approach reveals that having an alkaline environment in the vicinity of the cathode can absorb substantial amounts of CO_(2),which may greatly distort Faradaic efficiencies if not accounted for.While monitoring the outlet flow rate of a reactor appears a simple task,the mixed gases and small flow rates in lab-scale reactors can add challenges and we discuss various methods to measure these flow rates.While pH is well-known to play a role in the activity and selectivity of CO_(2)reduction,we demonstrate that(i)the operational pH is not necessarily the pH of the initial electrolyte,(ii)there are long transients in pH before steady state is reached(on the order of hours),and(iii)the pH of the anolyte and catholyte can be significantly different over the duration of the electrolysis.By varying the membrane type in a flowing-catholyte reactor(anion exchange,cation exchange,or bipolar membrane),we can use this monitoring approach to quantitatively identify the major differences in CO_(2)reduction performance related to these distinct membrane types.The overall conclusion is that complex engineering processes entail that a thorough monitoring of parameters is necessary to accurately analyze the performance of high current density electrochemical CO_(2)reduction devices.

Topology gives the following theorem: Let X and Y be topological spaces; Let f: X→Y be a continuous map. If X is connected, then f(X) is also connected. It is called connectedness invariant theorem which is not always very explicit for the people in its actual applications. Lately, the writer discovered that the theorem has extensive and important applications in biology. In this paper, its applications in pharmacology, genetics and physiology will be discussed.
