Peripheral nerve injuries result in the rapid degeneration of distal nerve segments and immediate loss of motor and sensory functions;behavioral recovery is typically poor.We used a plasmalemmal fusogen, polyethylene glycol(PEG),to immediately fuse closely apposed open ends of severed proximal and distal axons in rat sciatic nerves. We have previously reported that sciatic nerve axons repaired by PEG-fusion do not undergo Wallerian degeneration, and PEG-fused animals exhibit rapid(within 2–6 weeks)and extensive locomotor recovery.Furthermore, our previous report showed that PEG-fusion of severed sciatic motor axons was non-specific,i.e.,spinal motoneurons in PEG-fused animals were found to project to appropriate as well as inappropriate target muscles. In this study,we examined the consequences of PEG-fusion for sensory axons of the sciatic nerve.Young adult male and female rats(Sprague–Dawley)received either a unilateral single cut or ablation injury to the sciatic nerve and subsequent repair with or without(Negative Control)the application of PEG.Compound action potentials recorded immediately after PEG-fusion repair confirmed conduction across the injury site. The success of PEG-fusion was confirmed through Sciatic Functional Index testing with PEG-fused animals showing improvement in locomotor function beginning at 35 days postoperatively. At 2–42 days postoperatively,we anterogradely labeled sensory afferents from the dorsal aspect of the hindpaw following bilateral intradermal injection of wheat germ agglutinin conjugated horseradish peroxidase.PEG-fusion repair reestablished axonal continuity.Compared to unoperated animals, labeled sensory afferents ipsilateral to the injury in PEG-fused animals were found in the appropriate area of the dorsal horn,as well as inappropriate mediolateral and rostrocaudal areas.Unexpectedly, despite having intact peripheral nerves, similar reorganizations of labeled sensory afferents were also observed contralateral to the injury and repair. This central reorganization may contribute to the improved behavioral recovery seen after PEG-fusion repair, supporting the use of this novel repair methodology over currently available treatments. 展开更多

Distinct brain remodeling has been found after different nerve reconstruction strategies, including motor representation of the affected limb. However, differences among reconstruction strategies at the brain network level have not been elucidated. This study aimed to explore intranetwork changes related to altered peripheral neural pathways after different nerve reconstruction surgeries, including nerve repair,endto-end nerve transfer, and end-to-side nerve transfer.Sprague–Dawley rats underwent complete left brachial plexus transection and were divided into four equal groups of eight:no nerve repair, grafted nerve repair, phrenic nerve end-to-end transfer, and end-to-side transfer with a graft sutured to the anterior upper trunk.Resting-state brain functional magnetic resonance imaging was obtained 7 months after surgery. The independent component analysis algorithm was utilized to identify group-level network components of interest and extract resting-state functional connectivity values of each voxel within the component.Alterations in intra-network resting-state functional connectivity were compared among the groups.Target muscle reinnervation was assessed by behavioral observation(elbow flexion)and electromyography. The results showed that alterations in the sensorimotor and interoception networks were mostly related to changes in the peripheral neural pathway.Nerve repair was related to enhanced connectivity within the sensorimotor network, while end-to-side nerve transfer might be more beneficial for restoring control over the affected limb by the original motor representation. The thalamic-cortical pathway was enhanced within the interoception network after nerve repair and end-to-end nerve transfer.Brain areas related to cognition and emotion were enhanced after end-to-side nerve transfer. Our study revealed important brain networks related to different nerve reconstructions. These networks may be potential targets for enhancing motor recovery. 展开更多

Successful polyethylene glycol fusion(PEG-fusion)of severed axons following peripheral nerve injuries for PEG-fused axons has been reported to:(1)rapidly restore electrophysiological continuity;(2)prevent distal Wallerian Degeneration and maintain their myelin sheaths;(3)promote primarily motor, voluntary behavioral recoveries as assessed by the Sciatic Functional Index;and,(4)rapidly produce correct and incorrect connections in many possible combinations that produce rapid and extensive recovery of functional peripheral nervous system/central nervous system connections and reflex(e.g.,toe twitch)or voluntary behaviors. The preceding companion paper describes sensory terminal field reo rganization following PEG-fusion repair of sciatic nerve transections or ablations;howeve r,sensory behavioral recovery has not been explicitly explored following PEG-fusion repair. In the current study,we confirmed the success of PEG-fusion surgeries according to criteria(1-3)above and more extensively investigated whether PEG-fusion enhanced mechanical nociceptive recovery following sciatic transection in male and female outbred Sprague-Dawley and inbred Lewis rats.Mechanical nociceptive responses were assessed by measuring withdrawal thresholds using von Frey filaments on the dorsal and midplantar regions of the hindpaws.Dorsal von Frey filament tests were a more reliable method than plantar von Frey filament tests to assess mechanical nociceptive sensitivity following sciatic nerve transections.Baseline withdrawal thresholds of the sciatic-mediated lateral dorsal region differed significantly across strain but not sex.Withdrawal thresholds did not change significantly from baseline in chronic Unoperated and Sham-operated rats.Following sciatic transection, all rats exhibited severe hyposensitivity to stimuli at the lateral dorsal region of the hindpaw ipsilateral to the injury.However,PEG-fused rats exhibited significantly earlier return to baseline withdrawal thresholds than Negative Control rats.Furthermore,PEG-fused rats with significantly improved Sciatic Functional Index scores at or after 4 weeks postoperatively exhibited yet-earlier von Frey filament recove ry compared with those without Sciatic Functional Index recovery, suggesting a correlation between successful PEG-fusion and both motor-dominant and sensory-dominant behavioral recoveries. This correlation was independent of the sex or strain of the rat.Furthermore, our data showed that the acceleration of von Frey filament sensory recovery to baseline was solely due to the PEG-fused sciatic nerve and not saphenous nerve collateral outgrowths. No chronic hypersensitivity developed in any rat up to 12 weeks. All these data suggest that PEG-fusion repair of transection peripheral nerve injuries co uld have important clinical benefits. 展开更多

Epilepsy is a severe, relapsing, and multifactorial neurological disorder.Studies regarding the accurate diagnosis, prognosis, and in-depth pathogenesis are crucial for the precise and effective treatment of epilepsy. The pathogenesis of epilepsy is complex and involves alterations in variables such as gene expression, protein expression, ion channel activity, energy metabolites, and gut microbiota composition.Satisfactory results are lacking for conventional treatments for epilepsy.Surgical resection of lesions, drug therapy, and non-drug interventions are mainly used in clinical practice to treat pain associated with epilepsy.Non-pharmacological treatments, such as a ketogenic diet, gene therapy for nerve regeneration, and neural regulation, are currently areas of research focus. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the pathogenesis, diagnostic methods, and treatments of epilepsy. It also elaborates on the theoretical basis, treatment modes, and effects of invasive nerve stimulation in neurotherapy, including percutaneous vagus nerve stimulation, deep brain electrical stimulation, repetitive nerve electrical stimulation,in addition to non-invasive transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation.Numerous studies have shown that electromagnetic stimulation-mediated neuromodulation therapy can markedly improve neurological function and reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures.Additionally, many new technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy are being explored. However, current research is mainly focused on analyzing patients’clinical manifestations and exploring relevant diagnostic and treatment methods to study the pathogenesis at a molecular level, which has led to a lack of consensus regarding the mechanisms related to the disease. 展开更多

Anti-ganglioside antibodies are associated with delayed/poor clinical recovery in Guillain-Barrèsyndrome,mostly related to halted axon regeneration.Cross-linking of cell surface gangliosides by anti-ganglioside antibodies triggers inhibition of nerve repair in in vitro and in vivo paradigms of axon regeneration. These effects involve the activation of the small GTPase Rho A/ROCK signaling pathways, which negatively modulate growth cone cytoskeleton, similarly to well stablished inhibitors of axon regeneration described so far.The aim of this work was to perform a proof of concept study to demonstrate the effectiveness of Y-27632,a selective pharmacological inhibitor of ROCK,in a mouse model of axon regeneration of peripheral nerves, where the passive immunization with a monoclonal antibody targeting gangliosides GD1a and GT1b was previously reported to exert a potent inhibitory effect on regeneration of both myelinated and unmyelinated fibers. Our results demonstrate a differential sensitivity of myelinated and unmyelinated axons to the pro-regenerative effect of Y-27632.Treatment with a total dosage of 9 mg/kg of Y-27632 resulted in a complete prevention of anti-GD1a/GT1b monoclonal antibody-mediated inhibition of axon regeneration of unmyelinated fibers to skin and the functional recovery of mechanical cutaneous sensitivity. In contrast, the same dose showed toxic effects on the regeneration of myelinated fibers.Interestingly, scale down of the dosage of Y-27632 to 5 mg/kg resulted in a significant although not complete recovery of regenerated myelinated axons exposed to anti-GD1a/GT1b monoclonal antibody in the absence of toxicity in animals exposed to only Y-27632.Overall,these findings confirm the in vivo participation of Rho A/ROCK signaling pathways in the molecular mechanisms associated with the inhibition of axon regeneration induced by anti-GD1a/GT1b monoclonal antibody. Our findings open the possibility of therapeutic pharmacological intervention targeting Rho A/Rock pathway in immune neuropathies associated with the presence of anti-ganglioside antibodies and delayed or incomplete clinical recovery after injury in the peripheral nervous system. 展开更多

A hyaluronic acid granular hydrogel can promote neuronal and astrocyte colony formation and axonal extension in vitro, suggesting that the hydrogel can simulate an extracellular matrix structure to promote neural regeneration. However,in vivo experiments have not been conducted. In this study,we transplanted a hyaluronic acid granular hydrogel nerve guidance conduit to repair a 10-mm long sciatic nerve gap.The Basso,Beattie, and Bresnahan locomotor rating scale, sciatic nerve compound muscle action potential recording,Fluoro-Gold retrograde tracing, growth related protein 43/S100 immunofluorescence staining, transmission electron microscopy, gastrocnemius muscle dry/wet weight ratio, and Masson’s trichrome staining results showed that the nerve guidance conduit exhibited similar regeneration of sciatic nerve axons and myelin sheath, and recovery of the electrophysiological function and motor function as autologous nerve transplantation. The conduit results were superior to those of a bulk hydrogel or silicone tube transplant. These findings suggest that tissue-engineered nerve conduits containing hyaluronic acid granular hydrogels effectively promote the morphological and functional recovery of the injured sciatic nerve. The nerve conduits have the potential as a material for repairing peripheral nerve defects. 展开更多

Epigenetic changes in the spinal cord play a key role in the initiation and maintenance of nerve injury-induced neuro pathic pain.N6-methyladenosine(m6A)is one of the most abundant internal RNA modifications and plays an essential function in gene regulation in many diseases. However, the global m6A modification status of mRNA in the spinal cord at different stages after neuropathic pain is unknown. In this study,we established a neuropathic pain model in mice by preserving the complete sural nerve and only damaging the common peroneal nerve.High-throughput methylated RNA immunoprecipitation sequencing res ults showed that after spared nerve injury, there were 55 m6A methylated and diffe rentially expressed genes in the spinal cord.Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway results showed that m6A modification triggered inflammatory responses and apoptotic processes in the early stages after spared nerve injury.Over time, the diffe rential gene function at postoperative day 7 was enriched in "positive regulation of neurogenesis" and "positive regulation of neural precursor cell prolife ration." These functions suggested that altered synaptic morphological plasticity was a turning point in neuropathic pain formation and maintenance. Results at postoperative day 14 suggested that the persistence of neuropathic pain might be from lipid metabolic processes, such as "very-low-density lipoprotein particle clearance," "negative regulation of choleste rol transport" and "membrane lipid catabolic process." We detected the expression of m6A enzymes and found elevated mRNA expression of Ythdf2 and Ythdf3 after spared nerve injury modeling. We speculate that m6A reader enzymes also have an important role in neuropathic pain. These results provide a global landscape of mRNA m6A modifications in the spinal cord in the spared nerve injury model at diffe rent stages after injury. 展开更多

Our previous studies have shown that long noncoding RNA(lncRNA)H19 is upregulated in injured rat sciatic nerve during the process of Wallerian degeneration, and that it promotes the migration of Schwann cells and slows down the growth of dorsal root ganglion axons. However, the mechanism by which lncRNA H19 regulates neural repair and regeneration after peripheral nerve injury remains unclear. In this study,we established a Sprague-Dawley rat model of sciatic nerve transection injury. We performed in situ hybridization and found that at 4–7 days after sciatic nerve injury, lncRNA H19 was highly expressed. At 14 days before injury,adeno-associated virus was intrathecally injected into the L4–L5 foramina to disrupt or overexpress lncRNA H19.After overexpression of lncRNA H19,the growth of newly formed axons from the sciatic nerve was inhibited, whereas myelination was enhanced. Then,we performed gait analysis and thermal pain analysis to evaluate rat behavior. We found that lncRNA H19 overexpression delayed the recovery of rat behavior function, whereas interfering with lncRNA H19 expression improved functional recovery. Finally,we examined the expression of lncRNA H19 downstream target SEMA6D,and found that after lncRNA H19 overexpression, the SEMA6D protein level was increased. These findings suggest that lncRNA H19 regulates peripheral nerve degeneration and regeneration through activating SEMA6D in injured nerves. This provides a new clue to understand the role of lncRNA H19 in peripheral nerve degeneration and regeneration. 展开更多

Accurate localization of cranial nerves and responsible blood vessels is important for diagnosing trigeminal neuralgia(TN)and hemifacial spasm(HFS).Manual delineation of the nerves and vessels on medical images is time-consuming and labor-intensive.Due to the development of convolutional neural networks(CNNs),the performance of medical image segmentation has been improved. In this work,we investigate the plans for automated segmentation of cranial nerves and responsible vessels for TN and HFS,which has not been comprehensively studied before.Different inputs are given to the CNN to find the best training configuration of segmenting trigeminal nerves, facial nerves, responsible vessels and brainstem, including the image modality and the number of segmentation targets.According to multiple experiments with seven training plans,we suggest training with the combination of three-dimensional fast imaging employing steady-state acquisition(3D-FIESTA)and three-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography(3DTOF-MRA),and separate segmentation of cranial nerves and vessels. 展开更多

Objective Previous studies of peripheral nerves activation during magnetic stimulation have focused almost exclusively on the cause of high external parallel electric field along the nerves, whereas the effect of the transverse component has been ignored. In the present paper, the classical cable function is modified to represent the excitation of peripheral nerves stimulated by a transverse electric field during magnetic stimulation. Methods Responses of the Ranvier nodes to a transverse-field are thoroughly investigated by mathematic simulation. Results The simulation demonstrates that the excitation results from the net inward current driven by an external field. Based on a two-stage process, a novel model is introduced to describe peripheral nerves stimulated by a transverse-field. Based on the new model, the classical cable function is modified. Conclusion Using this modified cable equation, the excitation threshold of peripheral nerves in a transverse field during MS is obtained. The modified cable equation can be used to represent the response of peripheral nerves by an arbitrary electric field. 展开更多

We explore the hypothesis that a potential explanation for the initiation of motor neuron disease is an unappreciated vulnerability in central nervous system defense, the direct delivery of neurotoxins into motor neurons via peripheral nerve retrograde transport. This further suggests a mechanism for focal initiation of neuro-degenerative diseases in general, with subsequent spread by network degeneration as suggested by the Frost-Diamond hypothesis. We propose this vulnerability may be a byproduct of vertebrate evolution in a benign aquatic environment, where external surfaces were not exposed to concentrated neurotoxins. 展开更多

The Schwann cell reaction to nerve injury, termed the repair program,is crucial to successful nerve regeneration.Over the last decade, substantial advances have been made in elucidating the underlying molecular mechanisms in Schwann cells that lead to functional nerve repair. Moreover, the field has identified situations, such as aging and chronic denervation where these mechanisms go awry, paving the way for the development of therapeutic interventions(Arthur-Farraj and Coleman,2021;Cattin and Lloyd,2016;Jessen and Mirsky,2019).A recent article by Deborde et al.(2022)has demonstrated that unfortunately there is a downside to Schwann cells having such an efficient regeneration-promoting program;the promotion of tumor invasion of peripheral nerves. 展开更多

Summary: Optic nerve tumors are rare tumors, representing 3% - 5% of intracranial tumors developing mainly along the optic nerve and/or the chiasm. Optic nerve meningiomas are histologically benign tumors whose severity is linked to diagnostic and especially therapeutic difficulties. The Optic nerve meningioma is the second leading cause of optic nerve tumor after glioma. Observation: We report the case of a 49-year-old woman from South Asia, who consults an ophthalmology department for progressive visual loss in her right eye for about a year with her glasses and would like to renew her optical correction. Having no particular medical history apart from left unilateral blindness is known for approximately 15 years. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (IRM) cerebral found a tissue mass with a clear outline and polylobules on the left temporo-peduncular. Through this case, we describe the circumstances of discovery of the disease, the clinical characteristics, as well as our diagnostic approach. Conclusion: In the majority of cases, these are benign tumours, the circumstances of which are discovered in multiple ways. A mostly unilateral and non-improvable loss of visual acuity must attract our attention. Renewing glasses may be the reason for discovering the disease. Today Magnetic Resonance Imaging (IRM) remains an important and capital examination for the diagnosis and monitoring of this pathology. 展开更多

Based on network pharmacology, this study predicted the potential molecular mechanism and related pathways of the protective effect of traditional Chuanxiong Rhizoma,a traditional Chinese herb,on glaucomatous optic nerve injury, and conducted in vitro experimental verification of the predicted results of network analysis. We analyzed the molecular mechanism of Chuanxiong Rhizoma in the potential treatment of glaucoma by revealing its main active ingredients and predicting its targets,so as to provide reference for subsequent basic research.Network pharmacological research results showed that the potential hub targets and key signaling pathways of Chuanxiong Rhizoma in the treatment of glaucoma were closely related to biological processes such as apoptosis, autophagy, inflammation, oxidative stress and angiogenesis.Molecular docking showed that many active ingredients, such as chrysophanol(CHR),myricanone and retinol, could combine well with their target proteins by intermolecular forces, especially CHR had strong binding ability with each target. We speculated that the main active component of Chuanxiong Rhizoma might be involved in the regulation of PI3K-Akt,Nod-like receptor,IL-4 and IL-13,MAPK,AGE-RAGE and neurotrophin signaling pathway by regulating of PI3K,Akt,TLR4,RAGE,NTRK2 and other key targets.Furthermore,it may achieve multi-directional intervention on apoptosis/autophagy,inflammation/immunity,oxidative stress and nutrient metabolism of axoplasma flow, and then delay the degeneration of optic nerve injury. In vitro experiments showed that the active component CHR of Chuanxiong Rhizoma could reverse the M1-type polarization and autophagy/apoptosis of mouse microglia(BV2)induced by lipopolysaccharide(LPS)at the transcriptional level.Meanwhile, the expression of inflammatory mediators IL-1βand TNF-αwas inhibited, and the mRNA level of anti-inflammatory factor IL-10 was significantly increased. In addition,CHR down-regulates activation of the RAGE-NOX4 pathway mediated by LPS in reducing oxidative stress. In this study, network pharmacology and molecular docking technology were integrated for the first time to explore the potential molecular mechanism of traditional Chinese herb“Chuanxiong Rhizoma”in the treatment on glaucoma, and CHR was innovatively proposed as an important ingredient in Chuanxiong Rhizoma that plays a protective role in the damage of optic nerve.Preliminary verification was conducted through in vitro experiments. The results suggest that Chuanxiong Rhizoma may interfere with autophagy and apoptosis, inhibit immune inflammation,as well as reduce oxidative stress in the treatment of glaucoma through the active components represented by CHR,so as to resist progressive optic nerve injury. Our study provides theoretical basis for the clinical use of Chinese herbal medicine or its extract in glaucoma, and also lays a solid foundation for the research of Chinese medicine in the field of optic nerve protection. 展开更多

Injuries caused by trauma and neurodegenerative diseases can damage the peripheral nervous system and cause functional deficits.Unlike in the central nervous system, damaged axons in peripheral nerves can be induced to regenerate in response to intrinsic cues after reprogramming or in a growth-promoting microenvironment created by Schwann cells. However, axon regeneration and repair do not automatically result in the restoration of function, which is the ultimate therapeutic goal but also a major clinical challenge.Transforming growth factor(TGF)is a multifunctional cytokine that regulates various biological processes including tissue repair, embryo development, and cell growth and differentiation. There is accumulating evidence that TGF-βfamily proteins participate in peripheral nerve repair through various factors and signaling pathways by regulating the growth and transformation of Schwann cells;recruiting specific immune cells;controlling the permeability of the blood-nerve barrier, thereby stimulating axon growth;and inhibiting remyelination of regenerated axons.TGF-βhas been applied to the treatment of peripheral nerve injury in animal models. In this context,we review the functions of TGF-βin peripheral nerve regeneration and potential clinical applications. 展开更多

Stroke is a major disorder of the central nervous system that poses a serious threat to human life and quality of life. Many stro ke victims are left with long-term neurological dysfunction, which adversely affects the well-being of the individual and the broader socioeconomic impact.Currently, poststroke brain dysfunction is a major and difficult area of treatment.Vagus nerve stimulation is a Food and Drug Administration-approved exploratory treatment option for autis m,refractory depression, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s disease. It is expected to be a novel therapeutic technique for the treatment of stroke owing to its association with multiple mechanisms such as alte ring neurotransmitters and the plasticity of central neuro ns.In animal models of acute ischemic stroke, vagus nerve stimulation has been shown to reduce infarct size, reduce post-stroke neurological damage, and improve learning and memory capacity in rats with stroke by reducing the inflammatory response, regulating bloodbrain barrier permeability, and promoting angiogenesis and neurogenesis. At present, vagus nerve stimulation includes both invasive and non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation.Clinical studies have found that invasive vagus nerve stimulation combined with rehabilitation therapy is effective in im proving upper limb motor and cognitive abilities in stroke patients.Further clinical studies have shown that non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation, including ear/ce rvical vagus nerve stimulation, can stimulate vagal projections to the central nervous system similarly to invasive vagus nerve stimulation and can have the same effect. In this paper,we first describe the multiple effects of vagus nerve stimulation in stroke, and then discuss in depth its neuroprotective mechanisms in ischemic stroke. We go on to outline the res ults of the current major clinical applications of invasive and non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation. Finally,we provide a more comprehensive evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of different types of vagus nerve stimulation in the treatment of cerebral ischemia and provide an outlook on the developmental trends. We believe that vagus nerve stimulation,as an effective treatment for stroke, will be widely used in clinical practice to promote the recovery of stroke patients and reduce the incidence of disability. 展开更多

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes mellitus.Elucidating the pathophysiological metabolic mechanism impels the generation of ideal therapies. However, existing limited treatments for diabetic peripheral neuropathy expose the urgent need for cell metabolism research.Given the lack of comprehensive understanding of energy metabolism changes and related signaling pathways in diabetic peripheral neuropathy,it is essential to explore energy changes and metabolic changes in diabetic peripheral neuropathy to develop suitable treatment methods. This review summarizes the pathophysiological mechanism of diabetic peripheral neuropathy from the perspective of cellular metabolism and the specific interventions for different metabolic pathways to develop effective treatment methods.Various metabolic mechanisms(e.g.,polyol,hexosamine,protein kinase C pathway)are associated with diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and researchers are looking for more effective treatments through these pathways. 展开更多

Macrophages play an important role in peripheral nerve regeneration, but the specific mechanism of regeneration is still unclear. Our preliminary findings indicated that neutrophil peptide 1 is an innate immune peptide closely involved in peripheral nerve regeneration. However, the mechanism by which neutrophil peptide 1 enhances nerve regeneration remains unclear. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between neutrophil peptide 1 and macrophages in vivo and in vitro in peripheral nerve crush injury. The functions of RAW 264.7 cells we re elucidated by Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, flow cytometry, migration assays, phagocytosis assays, immunohistochemistry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.Axonal debris phagocytosis was observed using the CUBIC(Clear,Unobstructed Brain/Body Imaging Cocktails and Computational analysis)optical clearing technique during Wallerian degeneration.Macrophage inflammatory factor expression in different polarization states was detected using a protein chip. The results showed that neutrophil peptide 1 promoted the prolife ration, migration and phagocytosis of macrophages, and CD206 expression on the surfa ce of macrophages, indicating M2 polarization. The axonal debris clearance rate during Wallerian degeneration was enhanced after neutrophil peptide 1 intervention.Neutrophil peptide 1 also downregulated inflammatory factors interleukin-1α,-6,-12,and tumor necrosis factor-αin invo and in vitro. Thus, the results suggest that neutrophil peptide 1 activates macrophages and accelerates Wallerian degeneration, which may be one mechanism by which neutrophil peptide 1 enhances peripheral nerve regeneration. 展开更多
