Enhanced Reliability in Network Function Virtualization by Hybrid Hexagon-Cost Efficient Algorithm

In this,communication world, the Network Function Virtualization concept is utilized for many businesses, small services to virtualize the network nodefunction and to build a block that may connect the chain, communication services.Mainly, Virtualized Network Function Forwarding Graph (VNF-FG) has beenused to define the connection between the VNF and to give the best end-to-endservices. In the existing method, VNF mapping and backup VNF were proposedbut there was no profit and reliability improvement of the backup and mapping ofthe primary VNF. As a consequence, this paper offers a Hybrid Hexagon-CostEfficient algorithm for determining the best VNF among multiple VNF and backing up the best VNF, lowering backup costs while increasing dependability. TheVNF is chosen based on the highest cost-aware important measure (CIM) rate,which is used to assess the relevance of the VNF forwarding graph.To achieveoptimal cost-efficiency, VNF with the maximum CIM is selected. After the selection process, updating is processed by three steps which include one backup VNFfrom one SFC, two backup VNF from one Service Function Chain (SFC),and twobackup VNF from different SFC. Finally, this proposed method is compared withCERA, MinCost, MaxRbyInr based on backup cost, number of used PN nodes,SFC request utility, and latency. The simulation result shows that the proposedmethod cuts down the backup cost and computation time by 57% and 45% compared with the CER scheme and improves the cost-efficiency. As a result, this proposed system achieves less backup cost, high reliability, and low timeconsumption which can improve the Virtualized Network Function operation. 展开更多

With the advancements of software defined network(SDN)and network function virtualization(NFV),service function chain(SFC)placement becomes a crucial enabler for flexible resource scheduling in low earth orbit(LEO)satellite networks.While due to the scarcity of bandwidth resources and dynamic topology of LEO satellites,the static SFC placement schemes may cause performance degradation,resource waste and even service failure.In this paper,we consider migration and establish an online migration model,especially considering the dynamic topology.Given the scarcity of bandwidth resources,the model aims to maximize the total number of accepted SFCs while incurring as little bandwidth cost of SFC transmission and migration as possible.Due to its NP-hardness,we propose a heuristic minimized dynamic SFC migration(MDSM)algorithm that only triggers the migration procedure when new SFCs are rejected.Simulation results demonstrate that MDSM achieves a performance close to the upper bound with lower complexity. 展开更多

Software Defined Network(SDN)and Network Function Virtualization(NFV)technology promote several benefits to network operators,including reduced maintenance costs,increased network operational performance,simplified network lifecycle,and policies management.Network vulnerabilities try to modify services provided by Network Function Virtualization MANagement and Orchestration(NFV MANO),and malicious attacks in different scenarios disrupt the NFV Orchestrator(NFVO)and Virtualized Infrastructure Manager(VIM)lifecycle management related to network services or individual Virtualized Network Function(VNF).This paper proposes an anomaly detection mechanism that monitors threats in NFV MANO and manages promptly and adaptively to implement and handle security functions in order to enhance the quality of experience for end users.An anomaly detector investigates these identified risks and provides secure network services.It enables virtual network security functions and identifies anomalies in Kubernetes(a cloud-based platform).For training and testing purpose of the proposed approach,an intrusion-containing dataset is used that hold multiple malicious activities like a Smurf,Neptune,Teardrop,Pod,Land,IPsweep,etc.,categorized as Probing(Prob),Denial of Service(DoS),User to Root(U2R),and Remote to User(R2L)attacks.An anomaly detector is anticipated with the capabilities of a Machine Learning(ML)technique,making use of supervised learning techniques like Logistic Regression(LR),Support Vector Machine(SVM),Random Forest(RF),Naïve Bayes(NB),and Extreme Gradient Boosting(XGBoost).The proposed framework has been evaluated by deploying the identified ML algorithm on a Jupyter notebook in Kubeflow to simulate Kubernetes for validation purposes.RF classifier has shown better outcomes(99.90%accuracy)than other classifiers in detecting anomalies/intrusions in the containerized environment. 展开更多

The development of Fifth-Generation(5G)mobile communication technology has remarkably promoted the spread of the Internet of Things(IoT)applications.As a promising paradigm for IoT,edge computing can process the amount of data generated by mobile intelligent devices in less time response.Network Function Virtualization(NFV)that decouples network functions from dedicated hardware is an important architecture to implement edge computing,deploying heterogeneous Virtual Network Functions(VNF)(such as computer vision,natural language processing,intelligent control,etc.)on the edge service nodes.With the NFV MANO(Management and Orchestration)framework,a Service Function Chain(SFC)that contains a set of ordered VNFs can be constructed and placed in the network to offer a customized network service.However,the procedure of NFV orchestration faces a technical challenge in minimizing the network cost of VNF placement due to the complexity of the changing effect of traffic volume and the dependency on theVNFrelationship.To this end,we jointly optimize SFC design and VNF placement to minimize resource cost while taking account of VNF dependency and traffic volume scaling.First,the problem is formulated as an Integer Linear Programming(ILP)model and proved NPhard by reduction from Hamiltonian Cycle problem.Then we proposed an efficient heuristic algorithm called Traffic Aware and Interdependent VNF Placement(TAIVP)to solve the problem.Compared with the benchmark algorithms,emulation results show that our algorithm can reduce network cost by 10.2%and increase service request acceptance rate by 7.6%on average. 展开更多

Due to the development of network technology,the number of users is increasing rapidly,and the demand for emerging multicast services is becoming more and more abundant,traffic data is increasing day by day,network nodes are becoming denser,network topology is becoming more complex,and operators’equipment operation and maintenance costs are increasing.Network functions virtualization multicast issues include building a traffic forwarding topology,deploying the required functions,and directing traffic.Combining the two is still a problem to be studied in depth at present,and this paper proposes a two-stage solution where the decisions of these two stages are interdependent.Specifically,this paper decouples multicast traffic forwarding and function delivery.The minimum spanning tree of traffic forwarding is constructed by Steiner tree,and the traffic forwarding is realized by Viterbi-algorithm.Use a general topology network to examine network cost and service performance.Simulation results show that this method can reduce overhead and delay and optimize user experience. 展开更多

Edge intelligence brings the deployment of applied deep learning(DL)models in edge computing systems to alleviate the core backbone network congestions.The setup of programmable software-defined networking(SDN)control and elastic virtual computing resources within network functions virtualization(NFV)are cooperative for enhancing the applicability of intelligent edge softwarization.To offer advancement for multi-dimensional model task offloading in edge networks with SDN/NFV-based control softwarization,this study proposes a DL mechanism to recommend the optimal edge node selection with primary features of congestion windows,link delays,and allocatable bandwidth capacities.Adaptive partial task offloading policy considered the DL-based recommendation to modify efficient virtual resource placement for minimizing the completion time and termination drop ratio.The optimization problem of resource placement is tackled by a deep reinforcement learning(DRL)-based policy following the Markov decision process(MDP).The agent observes the state spaces and applies value-maximized action of available computation resources and adjustable resource allocation steps.The reward formulation primarily considers taskrequired computing resources and action-applied allocation properties.With defined policies of resource determination,the orchestration procedure is configured within each virtual network function(VNF)descriptor using topology and orchestration specification for cloud applications(TOSCA)by specifying the allocated properties.The simulation for the control rule installation is conducted using Mininet and Ryu SDN controller.Average delay and task delivery/drop ratios are used as the key performance metrics. 展开更多

Federated learning(FL)activates distributed on-device computation techniques to model a better algorithm performance with the interaction of local model updates and global model distributions in aggregation averaging processes.However,in large-scale heterogeneous Internet of Things(IoT)cellular networks,massive multi-dimensional model update iterations and resource-constrained computation are challenging aspects to be tackled significantly.This paper introduces the system model of converging softwaredefined networking(SDN)and network functions virtualization(NFV)to enable device/resource abstractions and provide NFV-enabled edge FL(eFL)aggregation servers for advancing automation and controllability.Multi-agent deep Q-networks(MADQNs)target to enforce a self-learning softwarization,optimize resource allocation policies,and advocate computation offloading decisions.With gathered network conditions and resource states,the proposed agent aims to explore various actions for estimating expected longterm rewards in a particular state observation.In exploration phase,optimal actions for joint resource allocation and offloading decisions in different possible states are obtained by maximum Q-value selections.Action-based virtual network functions(VNF)forwarding graph(VNFFG)is orchestrated to map VNFs towards eFL aggregation server with sufficient communication and computation resources in NFV infrastructure(NFVI).The proposed scheme indicates deficient allocation actions,modifies the VNF backup instances,and reallocates the virtual resource for exploitation phase.Deep neural network(DNN)is used as a value function approximator,and epsilongreedy algorithm balances exploration and exploitation.The scheme primarily considers the criticalities of FL model services and congestion states to optimize long-term policy.Simulation results presented the outperformance of the proposed scheme over reference schemes in terms of Quality of Service(QoS)performance metrics,including packet drop ratio,packet drop counts,packet delivery ratio,delay,and throughput. 展开更多

The combination of network function virtualization and software-defined networking allows various network functions to process flows according to their characteristics and requirements.Due to the highly dynamic nature of the workload,the network infrastructure needs to properly schedule the underlying resources in order to respond to workload changes in a timely manner.However,the existing NFV platform lacks a comprehensive solution for how to scale under workload variation,which may seriously hurt the overall system performance.To improve the scalability of the NFV platform and ensure consistent high performance under dynamic workloads,we propose AdaptNF,a novel NFV platform designed to support a combination of course-grained and fine-grained resource scheduling strategies.To deal with resource imbalance,which is the essential scheduling problem that leads to insufficient NFV performance,AdaptNF adopts a novel algorithm that can efficiently balance the workload among multiple network function instances through stateless flow migration.Our controlled experiments show that the AdaptNF scheme can optimize resource allocation and ensure outstanding performance after scaling.In terms of network throughput and latency,AdaptNF significantly improves the performance of the underlying NFV platform. 展开更多

With the rising demand for data access,network service providers face the challenge of growing their capital and operating costs while at the same time enhancing network capacity and meeting the increased demand for access.To increase efficacy of Software Defined Network(SDN)and Network Function Virtualization(NFV)framework,we need to eradicate network security configuration errors that may create vulnerabilities to affect overall efficiency,reduce network performance,and increase maintenance cost.The existing frameworks lack in security,and computer systems face few abnormalities,which prompts the need for different recognition and mitigation methods to keep the system in the operational state proactively.The fundamental concept behind SDN-NFV is the encroachment from specific resource execution to the programming-based structure.This research is around the combination of SDN and NFV for rational decision making to control and monitor traffic in the virtualized environment.The combination is often seen as an extra burden in terms of resources usage in a heterogeneous network environment,but as well as it provides the solution for critical problems specially regarding massive network traffic issues.The attacks have been expanding step by step;therefore,it is hard to recognize and protect by conventional methods.To overcome these issues,there must be an autonomous system to recognize and characterize the network traffic’s abnormal conduct if there is any.Only four types of assaults,including HTTP Flood,UDP Flood,Smurf Flood,and SiDDoS Flood,are considered in the identified dataset,to optimize the stability of the SDN-NFVenvironment and security management,through several machine learning based characterization techniques like Support Vector Machine(SVM),K-Nearest Neighbors(KNN),Logistic Regression(LR)and Isolation Forest(IF).Python is used for simulation purposes,including several valuable utilities like the mine package,the open-source Python ML libraries Scikit-learn,NumPy,SciPy,Matplotlib.Few Flood assaults and Structured Query Language(SQL)injections anomalies are validated and effectively-identified through the anticipated procedure.The classification results are promising and show that overall accuracy lies between 87%to 95%for SVM,LR,KNN,and IF classifiers in the scrutiny of traffic,whether the network traffic is normal or anomalous in the SDN-NFV environment. 展开更多

Cloud computing is an emerging domain that is capturing global users from all walks of life—the corporate sector,government sector,and social arena as well.Various cloud providers have offered multiple services and facilities to this audience and the number of providers is increasing very swiftly.This enormous pace is generating the requirement of a comprehensive ecosystem that shall provide a seamless and customized user environment not only to enhance the user experience but also to improve security,availability,accessibility,and latency.Emerging technology is providing robust solutions to many of our problems,the cloud platform is one of them.It is worth mentioning that these solutions are also amplifying the complexity and need of sustenance of these rapid solutions.As with cloud computing,new entrants as cloud service providers,resellers,tech-support,hardware manufacturers,and software developers appear on a daily basis.These actors playing their role in the growth and sustenance of the cloud ecosystem.Our objective is to use convergence for cloud services,software-defined networks,network function virtualization for infrastructure,cognition for pattern development,and knowledge repository.In order to gear up these processes,machine learning to induce intelligence to maintain ecosystem growth,to monitor performance,and to become able to make decisions for the sustenance of the ecosystem.Workloads may be programmed to“superficially”imitate most business applications and create large numbers using lightweight workload generators that merely stress the storage.In today’s current IT environment,when many enterprises use the cloud to service some of their application demands,a different performance testing technique that assesses more than the storage is necessary.Compute and storage are merged into a single building block with HCI(Hyper-converged infrastructure),resulting in a huge pool of compute and storage resources when clustered with other building blocks.The novelty of thiswork to design and test cloud storage using themeasurement of availability,downtime,and outage parameters.Results showed that the storage reliability in a hyper-converged system is above 92%. 展开更多

Network slicing is one of the most important concepts in 5G networks. It is enabled by the Network Function Virtualization (NFV) technology to allow a set of Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) to be interconnected to form a Network Service (NS). When network slices are created in 5G, some are shared among different 5G services while the others are dedicated to specific 5G services. The latter are called dedicated slices. Dedicated slices can be constructed with different configurations. In this research, dedicated slices of different configurations in 5G Core were evaluated in order to discover which one would perform better than the others. The performance of three systems would be compared: 1) Free5GC Stage 2 with each dedicated slice consisting of only UPF;2) Free5GC Stage 3 with each dedicated slice consisting of only UPF;3) Free5GC Stage 3 with each dedicated slice consisting of both SMF and UPF in terms of their registration time, response time, throughput, resource cost, and CPU utilization. It is shown that not one of the above systems will always be the best choice;based on the requirements, a specific system may be the best under a specific situation. 展开更多

Network function virtualization provides programmable in-network middlewares by leveraging virtualization tech-nologies and commodity hardware and has gained popularity among all mainstream network device manufacturers.Yet it is challenging to apply coverage-guided fuzzing,one of the state-of-the-art vulnerability discovery approaches,to those virtualized network devices,due to inevitable integrity protection adopted by those devices.In this paper,we propose a coverage-guided fuzzing framework NDFuzz for virtualized network devices with a novel integrity protec-tion bypassing method,which is able to distinguish processes of virtualized network devices from hypervisors with a carefully designed non-intrusive page global directory inference technique.We implement NDFuzz atop of two black-box fuzzers and evaluate NDFuzz with three representative network protocols,SNMP,DHCP and NTP,on nine popular virtualized network devices.NDFuzz obtains an average 36%coverage improvement in comparison with its black-box counterparts.NDFuzz discovers 2 O-Day vulnerabilities and 11-Day vulnerability with coverage guidance while the black-box fuzzer can find only one of them.All discovered vulnerabilities are confirmed by corresponding vendors. 展开更多

Abstract:Fog computing provides quality of service for cloud infrastructure.As the data computation intensifies,edge computing becomes difficult.Therefore,mobile fog computing is used for reducing traffic and the time for data computation in the network.In previous studies,software-defined networking(SDN)and network functions virtualization(NFV)were used separately in edge computing.Current industrial and academic research is tackling to integrate SDN and NFV in different environments to address the challenges in performance,reliability,and scalability.SDN/NFV is still in development.The traditional Internet of things(IoT)data analysis system is only based on a linear and time-variant system that needs an IoT data system with a high-precision model.This paper proposes a combined architecture of SDN and NFV on an edge node server for IoT devices to reduce the computational complexity in cloud-based fog computing.SDN provides a generalization structure of the forwarding plane,which is separated from the control plane.Meanwhile,NFV concentrates on virtualization by combining the forwarding model with virtual network functions(VNFs)as a single or chain of VNFs,which leads to interoperability and consistency.The orchestrator layer in the proposed software-defined NFV is responsible for handling real-time tasks by using an edge node server through the SDN controller via four actions:task creation,modification,operation,and completion.Our proposed architecture is simulated on the EstiNet simulator,and total time delay,reliability,and satisfaction are used as evaluation parameters.The simulation results are compared with the results of existing architectures,such as software-defined unified virtual monitoring function and ASTP,to analyze the performance of the proposed architecture.The analysis results indicate that our proposed architecture achieves better performance in terms of total time delay(1800 s for 200 IoT devices),reliability(90%),and satisfaction(90%). 展开更多

In HetNets(Heterogeneous Networks),each network is allocated with xed spectrum resource and provides service to its assigned users using speci c RAT(Radio Access Technology).Due to the high dynamics of load distribution among di erent networks,simply optimizing the performance of individual network can hardly meet the demands from the dramatically increasing access devices,the consequent upsurge of data trac,and dynamic user QoE(Quality-of-Experience).The deployment of smart networks,which are supported by SRA(Smart Resource Allocation)among di erent networks and CUA(Cognitive User Access)among di erent users,is deemed a promising solution to these challenges.In this paper,we propose a frame-work to transform HetNets to smart networks by leveraging WBD(Wireless Big Data),CR(Cognitive Radio)and NFV(Network Function Virtualization)techniques.CR and NFV support resource slicing in spectrum,physical layers,and network layers,while WBD is used to design intelligent mechanisms for resource mapping and trac prediction through powerful AI(Arti cial Intelligence)methods.We analyze the characteristics of WBD and review possible AI methods to be utilized in smart networks.In particular,the potential of WBD is revealed through high level view on SRA,which intelligently maps radio and network resources to each network for meeting the dynamic trac demand,as well as CUA,which allows mobile users to access the best available network with manageable cost,yet achieving target QoS(Quality-of-Service)or QoE. 展开更多
