Yields and Agronomic Characters of New Rice Hybrids Performed at Pine Bluff, Arkansas

Yields and agronomic characters of 35 new hybrids were tested at Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 2013. Yields and agronomic characters of 35 new hybrids were tested at Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 2013. These hybrids were developed from 7 female parent sterile lines, UP-1s, UP-3s, 100s, 101s, 105s, 111s, and 113A, and 5 male parent restorer lines, PB2, PB5, PB12, PB13, and PB18. The inbred variety Francis, which is a popular variety in the rice production, was used as the check (CK). Results showed that the yields of 10 hybrids were 20.3% - 31.7% higher than that of CKFrancis. The yields of other 18 hybrids were 10.1% - 19.4% higher than CK, and the yields of rest of the hybrids were 2.5% - 9.2% higher than CK. Hybrid UP-3s/PB5 had the highest yield, 12,983.8 kg/hectare and over check by 31.7%. The yield of hybrid UP-3s/PB18 and 115A/PB18 were 12,333.7 kg/hectare and over check 25%. The yields of hybrid UP-1s/PB12 was 12,324.6 kg//hectare and over check 24.9%. The sterile lines UP-3s, 113A, 105s, and 101s have good combinability and the average grain yields of their hybrids were over CKby 21.5%, 20.34%, 17.2% and 16.2%, respectively. The restorer lines PB18, PB5, and PB12 have good combinability and the average grain yields of their hybrids were over CKby 19.9%, 18.4% and 16.2%, respectively. These results indicated that these top hybrids and their parents of the sterile lines and restorer lines might be used in the hybrid rice breeding and production in the future. 展开更多

Both new plant type (NPT) and intersubspecific hybrid rice (IHR) had large sink size (total number of spikelets per m2), however, poor grain filling limited their potential in the grain yield. Compared to the three-line indica hybrid of Shanyou 63 (CK), NPT and IHR showed higher photosynthetic potential, higher dry matter accumulation and higher ratio of dry weight to spikelets (total dry wt./total number of spikelets) from heading to harvest. But both exhibited a low export percentage and transfer ratio of assimilates, low partitioning of 14C to grains from labeled flag leaves, low harvest indices and low physiological activities (IAA content and activities of ATPase and starch synthase) of grains at early grain-filling stage. The physiological activities of grains at early filling stage were significantly correlated with the export percentage and transfer ratio of assimilates, ripened-grain percentage and grain plumpness (r = 0.85 - 0.95). The source-sink ratio (dry matter wt./spikelet and nonstructural carbohydrate/spikelet) at heading was positively correlated with physiological activities of grains (r = 0. 84 - 0. 97 ). It is suggested that low physiological activities of grains at early filling stage is attributed to low source-sink ratio at heading, and the low sink activity weakens the ability to remobilize assimilates into grains, and leads to poor grain filling in NPT and IHR. 展开更多

To enhance the yield potential of an elite indica rice cultivar,an introgression(BC_3-derived) line of IR64,YTH288,was developed using a new-plant-type cultivar,IR66215-44-2-3,as a donor parent.YTH288 has agronomically valuable characteristics such as large panicles,few unproductive tillers,and large leaves inherited from NPT.To identify the genetic basis of these traits,we used 167 F_2 plants derived from a cross between IR64 and YTH288 to conduct QTL analysis for five agronomic traits:days to heading(DTH),culm length(CL),flag leaf length(FLL),flag leaf width(FLW),and filled spikelet number per panicle(FSN).Six putative QTL were detected:four on chromosome4(for CL,FLL,FLW,and FSN) and two on chromosome 2(for DTH and FLL).All QTL with the IR66215-44-2-3 allele,except that for FLL on chromosome 2,had positive effects on each trait.To confirm the effects of these putative QTL,we developed NILs with the IR64 genetic background by marker-assisted selection.We observed significant differences in several agronomic traits between IR64 and NILs that carried these QTL on chromosomes2 and 4.Additionally,four IR64-NILs carrying chromosomal segments derived from different NPT varieties on the long arm of chromosome 4 exhibited similar pleiotropic To enhance the yield potential of an elite indica rice cultivar, an introgression(BC3-derived) line of IR64, YTH288, was developed using a new-plant-type cultivar,IR66215-44-2-3, as a donor parent. Worldwide, approximately 27 million ha of rice are grown in upland rather than paddy fields, and is subject to drought stress. To counter this stress, it is desirable to breed new rice cultivars with improved drought tolerance. For breeding purposes, especially for breeding upland rice, it is desirable to develop a simple and accurate method to evaluate rice drought tolerance. We describe a new method that can be used to evaluate efficiently the drought tolerance degree(DTD) of upland rice cultivars, and call it the DTD method.DTD is defined as the mean of the ratios of green leaf length to total leaf length of the top three leaves in every rice seedling after drought treatment, and thus takes values from zero to one. To test whether the DTD method works effectively to evaluate drought tolerance of upland rice cultivars, we determined the DTD values of 13 upland rice cultivars showing varying degrees of drought tolerance in drought-tolerance trials. The idrl-1 mutant, which displayed the strongest drought tolerance of the 13 cultivars as identified by drought-tolerance trials under severe drought stress, had the highest DTD value and297-28, displaying the weakest drought tolerance, had the lowest DTD value. Further analyses of water potential, survival rate, panicles per plant, spikelets per panicle, seed setting rate, yield per plant, and contents of proline, chlorophyll, and malondialdehyde(MDA) indicated that DTD values are in general correlated with the values of these traits,making this new method useful for assessing the drought tolerance of upland rice cultivars.These results show that the DTD method is a simple, direct and relatively accurate evaluation method for drought-tolerance breeding of upland rice. 展开更多

Hybrid rice combination Xieyou 46 was first bred by combining CMS line Xieqingzao A with restorer line Milyang 46 at CNRRI in 1983. It can be used as single season or late season new indica hybrid rice combination. Having passed provincial level yield trials in the following years, it was released in 1990 with the permission of Zhejiang Provincial Government, later on recommended as one of the top commercial hybrid rice combination by China State Science and Technology Commission. By the end of 1992, Xieyou 46 has been planted as a late season or single season hybrid ricc combination along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and the planting area has reached 3.35 million ha. It has become one of the most important late season hybrid rice combinations in Zhejiang Province. Characteristics of Xieyou 46: Xieyou 46 has a suitable growth duration of 125-130 d as late season rice or 127-134 d as single season rice, 2-3 d shorter than those of Shanyou 6. To explore saline-tolerant high yield Spartina and rice germplasm resources,innovate upon distant hybridization technology,and develop new saline-tolerant mud flat Spartina germplasm,autonomous patent for invention was used to study distant hybridization of Spartina and rice in 2005- 2016. The study adopted tidal flat planting screening,phenotypic screening,molecular marker assisted selection,to find biological evidences of new germplasm,and also applied crossbreeding,conventional breeding,and molecular breeding,to select new saline-tolerant Spartina and rice varieties. With 12 years of efforts,the team developed 1498 crossbreeding combinations and established pedigree file and seed bank,tested 307 crossbreeding materials(57 hybrid seeds showed parental genetic components of Spartina and Rice); obtained Spartina/ Rice distant hybridization and seed setting,transplanting,hybridization material economic traits,and molecular biological experimental evidences; Rice♀× Spartina ♂ hybridization success rate of 1. 04- 1. 39%; obtained authorization of patent for invention of Distant Hybridization Methods for Spartina and Rice; formulated procedures for high yield cultivation of Spartina-Rice,planted 33. 33 hm2Spartina-Rice in coastal saline and alkaline land,cultivated 10 new saline-tolerant Spartina-Rice varieties,and the rice yield up to 5. 925- 8. 28 t / hm2. Results indicate that Spartina-Rice is saline-tolerant high yield rice germplasm,developed through sexual hybridization,conventional breeding,and molecular breeding technologies,and is optimal crop for saline and alkaline land. Success of Spartina-Rice solves the problem of saline-tolerant crop badly for transformation of saline and alkaline land,the problem of feeds for herbivores,as well as problem of environmental pollution resulted from straw burning.
