The study site is a holistic patient-centered organization that has developed a 16-week long orientation program for new graduate nurses entering the hospital setting. The purpose of the program is for new graduate nurses to gain the confidence, competence, and critical thinking skills for providing safe patient care. The issue occurring within the organization is that there is an increasing rise in the number of turnover rates of new graduates leaving the hospital, thus making evaluating the program a necessity to problem-solving. There has been no evaluation of the program in the past five years to reveal why the increase in the recent turnover rates. The data collected during the interview process was coded and categorized into three main sections: organizational, substantive, and theoretical. The evaluator used an organizational category to investigate for board areas or issues within the problem attempting to be solved. The evaluator concluded from the results and findings that the issue, a poor preceptor-preceptee relationship was seen by all stakeholders involved. The literature presented concludes that continuous evaluation of orientation programs is crucial for the professional and personal growth of new graduate nurses in the hospital. 展开更多

Background: Transversal competences are included in the United Nations Organization 2030 Agenda for the formation of staff professional in higher education, having disciplinary and transversal skills to develop individual, professional, social, and entrepreneurship at present time, creative individuals being able to solve social problems via collaboration. The aim was to evaluate the transversal competences developed by graduates, specialists in nursing with the accompaniment of clinic tutorship. Methods: Qualitative, phenomenological, and interpretative research. The informants were seven graduates from the Unique Program of Nursing Specialties (UPNS), from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), one participant from each knowledge field: Nursing in the Elderly, Public Health, Neurology, Physical and Sports Culture, Oncology, and two participants from Adult in Critical Condition. Information collection was through a focal group, and data analysis according to the principles of Souza Minayo. Signed informed consent was obtained previously. Results: Five categories with 24 sub-categories emerged. Category 1, Student’s perception on clinic tutorship specialty. Category 2, Competences promoted by clinic tutorship according to student’s experience. Category 3, Experiences about clinic tutorship planning. Category 4, Challenges faced by the student in the evaluation of clinic tutorship. Category 5, Opportunity fields in clinic tutorship from students’ experiences. Conclusion: Graduate students from the specialties describe transversal competences related with decision taking, collaborative work, and increase of population welfare, as well as generic disciplinary competences. The analogy of a social hinge between the clinic tutor and the student is highlighted, which allows to identify mobile and fixed components while the bolt that binds mentor with mentee is learning, by means of the accompaniment by an expert. . 展开更多

Generational diversity provides a unique quandary for nursing leaders and educators to enlist, orient, and retain nurses. Millennials are the largest cohort since the Baby Boomers and the age group from which the nursing profession will build its future workforce. This study examined the experiences of the new graduate nurse of the millennial generation as they navigate orientation in an acute care setting. Using a Web-based survey to conduct the study allowed nurses from across the country to participate while providing easy access to the study questions. Analysis of the data through qualitative content analysis demonstrated a dominate theme of seeking structure while expecting an individualized orientation. The survey also revealed the importance of the preceptor and manager in the perceived success of this generation’s transition and a need to assimilate into the professional role of RN. Recognizing that there is a need to promote a more individualized orientation with improved mentoring for novice nurses and their preceptors is evident and challenges nursing leaders and educators to rethink current practices to retain new nurses. Established roles within the hospital and individual nursing units are changing and traditional strategies for recruitment and retention no longer apply. A structured orientation can facilitate the transition from new graduate to professional nurse and assist in the retention of qualified nurses and ultimately safe patient care. 展开更多

The current research conducted a longitudinal study of new graduate nurses at 3 times-prior to their employment as nurses and 3 months and 1 year afterward. This study yielded 3 findings. 1) The mental health of new graduate nurses significantly worsens 3 months after employment as a nurse and mental health 1 year after employment as a nurse was significantly worse than that before employment. 2) A sense of coherence (SOC) is the ability to cope with stressors, and the 3 components of SOC decreased significantly in the year after employment as a nurse. 3) The mental health of new graduate nurses was significantly affected by a low SOC and by previous diminishing of SOC. Findings suggested the importance of support to sustain and improve the mental health of new graduate nurses and the importance of approaches in the workplace to encourage the development of SOC. 展开更多

Aims and Objectives: This paper describes Registered Nurses’ (RN’s) perceptions of the transferability of New Graduate Registered Nurses (NGRN’s) skills across settings: one aspect of a larger study exploring RN’s perceptions of NGRN’s work-readiness. Background: There is evidence RN’s do not consider NGRN’s as adequately prepared for practice. However, there does not appear to be consensus on what characterizes work-readiness. Methods: An adapted online questionnaire was sent to RNs in a range of clinical settings. They rated NGRNs’ skills and the applicability of those skills to their clinical setting using a 5-point Likert scale. Results: Perceptions of transferability of skills across settings varied. In the skills grouping of routine assessment, basic clinical skills, advanced clinical skills the percentage rated as “not applicable” was over 40% in 75% of the skills. The low or zero non-applicable responses to communication skills indicate this skill group contains transferable skills regardless of the setting. The zero non-applicable responses for preparedness for practice for all but two skills indicate these groups contain transferable skills across settings. Conclusion: There appears to be some alignment between expectations from RNs and current NGRN preparation. The lack of transferability of more advanced technical skills raises questions about the role of education in preparing the NGRN versus that of industry-based graduate programmes. The increase in nursing roles and the increased emphasis on aged care and primary health care dictates that generalist preparation of NGRNs emphasising the attributes of an RN should be the focus rather competency in advanced technical skills. 展开更多

Although the world has undergone different pandemics and disasters, the literature has shown that the new nurses still face uncertainty in dealing with health emergencies and disasters that impose significant stress on their performance at work. The situation in Oman is not different and little is known about the newly employed nurses’ experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: The qualitative study was designed to include face to face interviews of the newly employed nurses between May and December 2020 at the biggest tertiary hospital in Muscat, the capital of Oman to explore their experiences and how they confronted the COVID-19 pandemic challenges during their internship period. Result: The data was analyzed through qualitative manifest content analysis and disclosed different experiences which were framed into four contexts: Introductory Nurses Plan, Hospital Environment, Nurses Characters and Nurses Families & Relatives. The negative experiences were mainly related to the intense internship requirements, non-availability of the preceptors, hospital environment and COVID-19 circumstances. On the other hand, the positive experiences were mainly related to their self-motivation, recruitment satisfaction, and family encouragement and support. Conclusion: Clear nurses’ lack of knowledge towards COVID-19 pandemic was disclosed and associated with mixed emotional insights towards themselves, their families and relatives, their preceptors and towards the hospital environment including their preparatory plan. The study identified the nurses’ stressors and motivators that could be addressed with a clear need for preparatory adjustments to support newly employed nurses in future appointments with a lot of involvements shared responsibilities and implications. 展开更多

However, some novice nurses are unable to adapt to the workplace, and subsequently quit. This study aimed at clarifying relationship issues between novice and senior nurses and examining measures that could be enforced in wards for novice nurses based on the results. Methods: An inductive analysis was conducted on qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with 11 newly hired nurses who had recently graduated from nursing school. The study period was from November 2016 to March 2017. Results: The analysis generated the following three themes related to potential workplace maladaptation: 1) Adaptation to the workplace: difficulty in forming relationships with senior nurses and adapting, 2) Workplace education system: education by preceptors and senior nurses, 3) Professional stance: qualities as a nurse. Conclusion: The results indicated that novice nurses had difficulties in adapting to the workplace as well as its education system in wards. Hence, it was necessary to create habits that would not overly burden others, but instead, spread the rules of the organization, help novice nurses to understand their responsibilities, and assist them in overcoming challenges. 展开更多

This paper reports on a qualitative research study that examined the experience of expert and novice nurses participating in a new, reflective program of “clinical supervision”, intending to facilitate the transition of new graduate nurses into the workforce. Three patterns emerged during the constructivist inquiry: readiness to reflect, valuing of clinical supervision, and sustainability of the clinical supervision model. The researchers suggest generational sensitivity as a key perspective to consider when developing engaging workplace strategies for millennial nurses. The article offers recommendations for the implementation of clinical supervision and would be of interest to nurse leaders in a clinical setting. 展开更多
