Spatial Planning and Designing for Campuses in the New Era

Current education system reform poses unprecedented opportunities for higher schools. The research proposed components and organization types for uni- versity/college spatial configuration based on campus spaces at home and abroad. In the background of sustainable design, the research took urban space design as references in order to explore effects of higher education theory on campus space design, analyze campus development trend and spatial configuration, as well as pro- vide references for massive urban university/college projects＂ construction and re-de- velopment.

Reference of Traditional Academic Landscape for Landscape Construction of Modern Campuses

Under the background of cultural regression,the paper emphasized that architectural and environmental characteristic could be a synonym of a college.Chinese college campus environment should abound in Chinese cultural characteristic.Through analysis on traditional academy landscape,it pointed out that construction and structure of academy were deeply influenced by academic culture,and scenery had been taken to express emotions.In terms of site selection,it paid attention to selection of sites near the mountain and by the river,so as to meet the purpose of culture and moral cultivation.In terms of structure,symmetrical layout was mostly adopted.By aid of artificial construction at the inside,academic cultural atmosphere had been enhanced.After analysis of difference between ancient academy and modern campus,it pointed out that traditional academy had natural heritage relation with modern college,and its landscaping concept and scientificness were of value to modern landscaping.Hence,it further studied reference of traditional academic landscape for modern campus landscape construction,highlighting that landscape environment construction should lay stress on diversity,practicability,ecology and culture,so as to achieve heritage and integration of traditional national culture.

Analysis of the Landscape Environment Construction on New Campuses of Universities in China

The construction of new campuses of modern universities in China and the landscape environment of overseas universities were introduced in this paper,misunderstandings in the construction of new campuses were analyzed,the optimization of campus environment was discussed from the perspectives of landscape environment,humanistic environment and social environment.

Study on Cultural Landscape Designs for New Campuses—A Case Study of Cultural Landscape Design on Campus of Chongqing University of Technology

Connotations and functions of campus cultural landscapes were elaborated,and campus cultural landscapes were believed to have continuity of culture,subtle educational and encouraging effects on teachers and students.Environment characteristics,construction conditions and cultural landscapes of Huaxi Campus of Chongqing University of Technology were analyzed.On this basis,cultural landscape planning of new campuses was studied,and it was stressed that group functions should be taken as the foundation to highlight spirits and style of the university,and demonstrate characteristics of its disciplines.In this way,campus designs concern more about users,enable students to live and study in a healthy environment,and are able to inherit campus cultures.The study was to improve the present construction of Huaxi Campus,make up deficiencies in the construction of campus cultural landscapes,and enhance campus spirits and comprehensive strength of the university.

Comprehensive Evaluation of Spatial Form Planning for Campuses of Newly-upgraded Undergraduate Universities

According to the analysis on the present situation and development tendency of the campus spatial form planning of newly-upgraded undergraduate universities as well as its functions and characteristics,15 evaluation indices were ascertained and the comprehensive evaluation model of the planning was established by AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process).The results showed that AHP could effectively ascertain the evaluation indices system.Through calculating the weight of each index and judging the consistency of matrixes,key factors that can influence the campus spatial form planning were obtained,such as public green space,landscape node,visual contact axis,landscape axis,central plaza and teaching group space.

Investigation of Vertical Greening Plants on the Campuses of Hainan University

Through investigating vertical greening plants on the campuses of Hainan University,it was found that there are 41 species vertical greening plants with excellent landscape effects,belonging to 36 genera and 20 families,among which 4 species are shrubs,33 liana and 4 gramineous plants.The current application situation of the vertical greening plants on the campuses was briefly analyzed in this study,and corresponding suggestions were put forward in view of the existing problems.

Educational Role of Vernacular Cultures in Landscape Design of Campuses in East,Central and West China

By defining the concept of vernacular cultures,3 basic elements of vernacular cultures were refined according to different demonstration forms,specifically,vernacular materials and things,vernacular cultural context and vernacular sentiments.Nanjing Normal University,Wuhan University and Sichuan Institute of Fine Arts were taken respectively as landscape design representatives of campus in east,central and west China to elaborate application of vernacular cultures in campus landscape design.Finally,development trend of education role of campus landscapes was discussed from the perspectives of"modeling after the nature,building according to users'needs","seeking differences on the basis of maintaining similarities,recording the history and prospecting the future","green and low-carbon,dynamic and sustainable",so as to ensure campus landscapes to develop their educational effects subtly.

Study on the Landscape Planning of New Campuses——A Case Study of Landscape Planning of the South Side of Library on Weiyang Campus,Xi'an Technological University

By taking landscape planning of the south side of library on Weiyang Campus,Xi'an Technological University for example,campus landscape planning concepts of ordnance universities were discussed.From the perspective of creating a campus environment with distinctive characteristics of universities,the integration of users and environment and the creation of a beautiful campus cultural environment were stressed.With an overall spatial pattern of "two centers,four axes,infiltration among different functional areas",the planning site was divided into the following 6 subareas:central landscape space,pavement landscape space,garden setting space,waterscape space,ordnance culture demonstration space,teaching and dormitory space.Its road systems and plant landscapes on campus were clearly organized.The authors aimed at providing useful references for the construction of new campuses by studying landscape planning of a part of Weiyang Campus,Xi'an Technological University.

Modeling Bicycle Conflict on Non-Motorized Paths on Suburban College Campuses

Bicycling is an important way for college students and employees to get around campuses. With a rise in bicycling on campuses there comes a rise in bicycle collisions with pedestrians walking to and from classes and work. The literature review showed many papers involving bicycle conflict modeling but on roads with motor vehicles. While some aspects of this research can be applied to non-motorized paths, there is a lack of research strictly focusing on only bicycles and pedestrians. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap by developing a model to identify locations on roads and paths (hotspots) on college campuses that are likely to have a bicycle collision and predict the likelihood of a serious bicycle crash on a non-motorized path based on the characteristics of the path. This study identifies those interactions between bicyclists and pedestrians on non-motorized paths on a suburban college campus in Newark, USA. Findings suggest that pedestrian density of a path is a major factor in the maximum speed bicyclists can achieve. The wider the path is, the higher the maximum speed is that a bicyclist can obtain. This is because a wider path width decreases the pedestrian density. The grade of the path has little effect on bicycle speeds. The results of the models were displayed on a GIS map that is visually appealing to a viewer. The paths were color coded based on their level of safety, so it is easy to observe problematic areas of the network. This technique can be applied to the entire campus network of non-motorized paths to study the whole system. This can then be used by planners and designers to identify areas that need upgrading and improve the overall safety of the non-motorized path system.

Campus Design Strategies Based on Spatial Images： A Case Study of Four New Campuses in Chengdu

From 1999, with the rapid expansion of enrollment scale, colleges have experienced fast development and construction of new campuses. However, the urgency of the demand for campus space at that time led to the shortcomings of paying more attention to speed than connotation during the construction of the new campus. Even now the evaluation of new campuses which have been used for nearly twenty years and whether the space of new campuses has played its due role will affect the display of the heritage and temperament of colleges. This paper uses the typical spatial cognitive concept—spatial image to analyse the elements of spatial images on campuses, summarizes the perceptions of teachers and students towards the space of four new campuses in Chengdu through questionnaire survey and analysis, puts forward the principles of campus space design and the strategies of classification design, and intends to take spatial images as the research cut-in point to provide new ideas and suggestions for the design and improvement of campus space from the perspective of users.

Renewal Strategy of Old Campuses of Colleges and Universities Based on Heritage Protection: A case study of Qingshanhu Campus of Jiangxi Normal University

The Qingshanhu Campus of Jiangxi Normal University was taken as an example to study the existing problems of old campuses at present,and how to excavate the memory and remains of the campus on the basis of the preserved historic buildings was studied.The theory of urban renewal and cultural heritage protection was used to update and protect the campus.

Research on Optimal Design of Campus Space Based on POE Concept: A Case Study of Anhui Xinhua College

Through the analysis of the overall landscape,revetments and roads and plant landscape,10 evaluation factors were determined.The comprehensive evaluation model for the campus space of Anhui Xinhua University was constructed by analytic hierarchy process(AHP).The results showed that revetment safety,road convenience,plant disease resistance and campus activity space were important factors affecting the spatial form planning of campus.Through the comparative analysis of the collected data,optimization suggestions were put forward to provide a basis for the establishment of“people-oriented”campus open space system.

Optimization and Construction of Collaborative Office under the Background of Smart Campus in Universities

Research on the Campus Cultural Landscape of the Tibetan-Yi Corridor:Taking the Middle and Primary Schools in Meigu County of Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture as an Example

In view of rural revitalization,the Meigu area,as a key region of the Tibetan-Yi Corridor,faces challenges in educational development and the construction of campus cultural landscapes.Campus landscape culture,as the foundation of campus culture,is one of the important factors affecting the quality of campus education.Integrating traditional cultural elements such as Yi patterns and totems into the design can effectively enhance the aesthetic of the campus,promote the local ethnic characteristic culture,and inject new vitality into rural revitalization.Therefore,this paper applies traditional Yi cultural elements to the design of campus cultural landscapes.This is of great significance for improving the rural school environment and enhancing students’enthusiasm for learning and cultural identity.Besides,it provides an alternative for the preservation and development of local culture.

Understanding perceptions of college students on the operation of automated shuttle for persons with disabilities on campus walkways

Persons with disabilities have difficulties traveling from one point to the other due to the limited options of travel modes for the first and last mile.Western Michigan University tested using an autonomous shuttle on the main campus's sidewalks for persons with disabilities.This study's objectives are to understand the empathy college students without disabilities had on the need for suitable transportation services for students with disabilities and the perceived risks of the services'operation on sidewalks.The Bayesian ordered logit model and text mining analyzed 396 survey responses.The Bayesian ordered logistic regression results revealed that age,gender,and ethnicity are important factors that contribute to different opinions concerning perceived risks and sympathy brought by an autonomous shuttle operating on pedestrians'sidewalks.The text mining results revealed several patterns.While respondents who were against the operation focused on potential safety hazards and the crowdedness of the sidewalks,supporters focused on the expected improved mobility for people with disabilities.The findings from this study are expected to assist policymakers and vehicle manufacturers with pedestrian expectations and considerations related to risk and safety when sharing their walkways with the autonomous shuttle.

Review of Digital Campus Construction Led by Virtual Reality Technology

In recent years,the government has issued a series of documents to promote the construction of digital campuses.This initiative serves to encourage the deep integration of information technology and intelligent technology education and digital reform,the combination of virtual reality and campus management is the need for innovative thinking and economic and social development,and then better change our learning style and living environment.The construction of the digital campus is based on virtual reality technology,BIM,GIS,and three-dimensional modeling technology to provide an immersive platform for students,promote the integration of virtual reality technology and education,help teachers,students,and parents to understand all kinds of education information and resources,to achieve their interoperability.From the off-campus environment to the school teaching equipment,teachers to teaching quality certification,and learning,to extracurricular entertainment,opening ceremonies to graduation parties,to bring more efficient,convenient,and safe campus life for teachers,students,and staff in school,and break the traditional information restrictions.

Investigation on Phytoplankton and Water Quality Evaluation in Landscape Water of Campus in Nanjing Xianlin University Town

The major phytoplankton was investigated and analyzed in landscape water of six campuses in Nanjing Xianlin University Town,and water quality was evaluated by single factor assessment method and comprehensive weighted evaluation method.The result showed that the major phytoplankton groups were Cyanophyta,Chlorophyta and Bacillariophyta.Besides,each evaluation indicator showed that waterbodies in four campuses were eutrophicated and result of single factor evaluation showed water quality all belonged to poor category V.The result of comprehensive weighted assessment showed that waters in Nanjing Normal University and Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications were seriously polluted,cyanobacterial bloom appearing.Waters in Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine and Nanjing Forest Police College hadn't been eutrophicated.
