The influence of Zr and Y on the cast microstructure of a nickel-based superalloy was investigated by optical microscopy (OM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),electron probe micro-analysis(EPMA)and X-ray diffraction(XRD).Theγ+γ′eutectic volume in the superalloy rises notably with the increase of Zr or Y content.Meanwhile,the morphologies of primary MC carbides change from needle and platelet-like to blocky shape with increasing Zr and Y doped.The XRD results show that the primary MC carbide lattice constant increases with Zr and Y additions,and EPMA investigation shows that the platelet-like MC carbides contain primarily Nb and C,while those carbides in blocky shape have 39.2%Zr and 39.6%Nb in average,.These influences on the cast microstructure can be attributed to the atomic size effects of Zr and Y. 展开更多

A Y2O3 dispersion strengthened nickel-based superalloy sheet(0.15 mm thick) was prepared by electron beam physical vapor deposition(EB-PVD) technology.Different heat treatments were used to improve the mechanical properties of the alloy sheet.Differential thermal analysis(DTA) was used to examine the thermal stability of the as-deposited sheet.Element contents,phase composition and microstructure investigations on as-deposited and heat treated specimens were performed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometer(XRF),X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).Tensile tests were conducted at room temperature on specimens as-deposited and heat treated.The results show that the as-deposited sheet is composed of equiaxed grains on the substrate side and columnar grains on the evaporation side.The as-deposited sheet shows poor ductility due to micropores between columnar grains.The strength and ductility can be improved effectively by annealing at 800°C for 3 h.For samples treated at 1100°C,the strength drops down due to the precipitates of Y3Al5O12(YAG). 展开更多

Nickel-based superalloys with and without Co by partial replacement of W were prepared using double vacuum melting.A comparison of the oxidation in air and hot corrosion behaviors under molten 75 wt.%Na2 SO4+25 wt.%NaCl at 900℃were systematically investigated.The results showed that partial replacement of W with Co promoted the formation of chromia scale and consequently decreased the oxidation rate.Besides,the addition of Co also retarded the internal oxidation/nitridation of Al and consequently promoted the growth of Al_(2) O3 scale,which further decreased the scaling rate and improved the adhesion of scale.Moreover,the addition of Co also further improved the hot corrosion resistance under molten Na2 SO4-NaCl salts. 展开更多

Nickel-based superalloy was treated with molten zinc for the selective extraction of nickel.The effects of heating temperature,heating time,and the mass ratio of zinc to superalloy on the extraction of metals in the superalloy were investigated.An extraction rate of 95.2%for nickel,55.4%for iron and 30.4%for chromium,but low extraction rates of the refractory metals(titanium(Ti),molybdenum(Mo),and niobium(Nb))were obtained under the optimal conditions of the heating temperature of 850℃,the heating time of 4 h,and the zinc/superalloy mass ratio of 10:1.In the subsequent vacuum distillation process,the obtained nickel alloy contained nickel with a purity of 73.5 wt.%after zinc removal.Moreover,the recovered zinc after the distillation process had a purity of 99.9 wt.%.The results of the investigated process indicated the possibility of extracting nickel directly from nickel-based superalloy scraps. 展开更多

The morphological evolution of the γ' phase in nickel-based superalloy жc6y during various solution heat treatments was investigated. The significant changes of the γ' precipitates were observed in the solution-treated samples. The coarsening and dissolution of γ' phase simulta-neously occurred at intermediate temperatures. In some areas, the primary precipitates became blunt and the adjacent ones were intercon-nected with each other via a diffuse neck, indicating a coarsening process of the primary γ' population. The coarsening was dominated by the precipitate agglomeration mechanism (PAM) rather than by the well-known Ostwald ripening mechanism. In other areas, the partial dissolu-tion of the γ' precipitates began to occur, spreading gradually from dendrite cores to interdendritic regions. In addition, a flower-like γ' struc-ture was developed during the subsolvus solution treatments. The observable long filaments composed of erraticly shaped precipitates were caused by the heterogeneous nucleation of the cooling precipitates during water quenching. 展开更多

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was developed to detect aluminum in nickel-based superalloys (K417, GH4033, DZ125L, З ∏742y) using a non-intensified, non-gated, low-cost detection system. The precision of LIBS depends strongly on the experimental conditions. The calibration curves of Al(I)394.4 nm and Al(I)396.2 nm under the optimum experimental parameters are presented. Finally the limit of detection (LOD) for aluminum is calculated from the experimental data, which is in the range of 0.09% to 0.1% by weight. 展开更多

The low-cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior of a nickel-based single crystal superalloy with [001] orientation was studied at an intermediate temperature of T0℃ and a higher temperature of To + 250℃ under a constant low strain rate of 10^-3 s^-1 in ambient atmosphere. The superalloy exhibited cyclic tension-compression asymmetry which is dependent on the temperature and applied strain amplitude. Analysis on the fracture surfaces showed that the surface and subsurface casting micropores were the major crack initiation sites. Interior Ta-rich carbides were frequently observed in all specimens. Two distinct types of fracture were suggested by fractogaphy. One type was characterized by Mode-I cracking with a microscopically rough surface at To + 250℃. Whereas the other type at lower temperature T0℃ favored either one or several of the octahedral {111} planes, in contrast to the normal Mode-I growth mode typically observed at low loading frequencies (several Hz). The failure mechanisms for two cracking modes are shearing of γ' precipitates together with the matrix at T0℃ and cracking confined in the matrix and the γ/γ'interface at To - 250℃. 展开更多

The present research aims to establish a quantitative relation between microstructure and chemical composition (i.e., Ti, Al, and Nb) of newly designed nickel-based superalloys. This research attempts to identify an optimum microstructure at which the minimum quanti- fies of γ/γ' and γ/γ" compounds are achieved and the best castability is predicted. The results demonstrate that the highest quantity of inter- metallic eutectics (i.e., 41.5wt%) is formed at 9.8wt% (Ti + A1). A significant quantity of intermetallics formed in superalloy 1 (with a com- position of7 - 9.8wt% (Ti + A1)), which can deteriorate its castability. The type and morphology of the eutectics changed and the amount considerably decreased with decreasing Ti + A1 content in superalloy 2 (with a composition ofy - 7.6wt% (Ti + A1), 1.Swt% Nb). Thus, it is predicted that the castability would improve for superalloy 2. The same trend was observed for superalloy 4 (with a composition of 7 - 3.7wt% (Ti + A1), 4.4wt% Nb). This means that the amount of Laves increases with increasing Nb (to 4.4wt%) and decreasing Ti + A1 (to 3.7wt%) in su- peralloy 4. The best castability was predicted for superalloy 3 (with a composition ofy - 5.7wt% (Ti + A1), 2.8wt% Nb). 展开更多

The shape change of the γ' precipitates of cast Ni-based superalloy K52 after aging treatment under a high magnetic field was investigated. The results show that duplex γ' precipitates are present in the γ matrix after aging treatment with or without the magnetic field. One is the coarse particles with average size of 500 nm; the other is fine spherical γ' precipitates with average of 100 nm in diameter. The application of a 10T magnetic field only results in the shape of the coarse γ' particles changing from spherical to cuboidal when the alloys subjected to the same heat treatments. This shape change was mainly discussed based on the strain energy increase caused by the difference in magnetostriction between the γ matrix and γ' precipitates. The fine γ' particles still keep spherical. Further TEM observations shows that a number of γ particles in nano-scale precipitate in the coarse γ' particles in the specimens treated without the magnetic field. In addition, it was found that the magnetic field caused the decrease of the hardness in the alloy, and the hardness was associated with the field direction. 展开更多

The oxidation behavior of a nickel-based superalloy at 1000°C in air was investigated through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy analysis. A series of oxides, including external oxide scales(Cr_2O_3,(TiO_2 + Mn Cr_2O_4)) and internal oxides(Al_2O_3,Ti N), were formed on the surface or sub-surface of the substrate at 1000°C in experimental still air. The oxidation resistance of the alloy was dependent on the stability of the surface oxide layer. The continuity and density of the protective Cr_2O_3 scale were affected by minor alloying elements such as Ti and Mn. The outermost oxide scale was composed of TiO_2 rutile and Mn Cr_2O_4 spinel, and the growth of TiO_2 particles was controlled by the outer diffusion of Ti ions through the pre-existing oxide layer. Severe internal oxidation occurred beneath the external oxide scale, consuming Al and Ti of the strength phase γ′(Ni_3(Al,Ti)) and thereby severely deteriorating the surface mechanical properties. The depth of the internal oxidation region was approximately 35 μm after exposure to experimental air at 1000°C for 80 h. 展开更多

Grain growth, mechanical properties, and fracture mechanism of nickel-based GH4099 superalloy are investigated using heat treatments, tensile tests, optical microscopy (OM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The OM observation shows that the matrix grains (γ-grains) undergo an apparent growth during the solution treatment. The grain size diameter increases from 100 to 174 μm when the solution temperature rises from 1100℃ to 1160℃ for 30 min. When the holding time increases from 15 to 60 min at 1140℃, the grain size diameter increases from 140 to 176 μm, indicating that the γ-grain growth is more sensitive to temperature than time. Standard deviation, <em>S</em><sub>v</sub>, and the grain size distribution are utilized to characterize the microstructural uniformity. To predict the grain size more accurately, we develop the grain growth kinetics and find that the growth index is close to 5. The yield strength (<em>R</em><sub>p0.2</sub>), tensile strength (<em>R</em><sub>m</sub>), and ductility (<em>A</em><sub>f</sub>) are also measured. It is found that the effect decreases in the order cooling rate, solution temperature, time. <em>R</em><sub>p0.2</sub> reduces by 47% with the increase in the cooling rate from 1℃ to 8000℃/min, while both strength and ductility exhibit little changes with time. The SEM results show that the fracture surfaces have typical mixed brittle and ductile characteristics when specimens are subjected to water quenching and air cooling. However, a complete brittle fracture occurs under furnace cooling conditions. The EDS analysis indicates that the brittle γ' (Ni<sub>3</sub>Ti) phase precipitates around the γ-grain boundary during the slow cooling process, which is the main factor yielding the complete brittle fracture. Finally, the optimal solution treatment scheme for the GH4099 superalloy is proposed—a temperature of 1140℃ for 30 min followed by air cooling. 展开更多

The impact force, impact pressure, and impact frequency of the saw-tooth-shaped chip edge on rake face and cutting edge at different speeds were calculated, and the influence of chip edge on notch wear formation was analyzed. A new directionally solidified Ni-based superalloy DZ24, which is a modification of K24 alloy without rare and expensive elemental additions, such as Ta and Hf, was studied in this paper. The microstructure and stress rupture properties of conventionally cast and directionally solidified superalloys were comparatively analyzed. It is indicated that the microstructure of K24 alloy is composed of γ, γ', γ/γ' eutectics and MC carbides. Compared with the microstructure of K24 polycrystalline alloy, γ/γ' eutectic completely dissolves into the γ matrix, the fine and regular γ' phase reprecipitates, and MC carbides decompose to M6C/M23C6 carbides after heat treatment in DZ24 alloy. The rupture life of DZ24 alloy is two times longer than that of K24 alloy. The more homogeneous the size of γ' precipitate, the longer the rupture life. The coarsening and rafting behaviors of γ' precipitates are observed in DZ24 alloy after the stress-rupture test. 展开更多

M6 C and Ni17Y2 phases were observed and the amount of Ni17Y2 increased with yttrium concentration. When the yttrium concentration increased to 0.43 wt.%,some Ni17Y2 chains and multi phase regions containing Ni17Y2, M6 C and γ phase appeared, which is harmful for the oxidation resistance. The alloy containing 0.05 wt.% yttrium showed the best oxidation resistance, which derives its oxidation resistance from the adequate concentration of yttrium in the solid-solution(γ phase), the formation of the protective layer of YCr O3 and chromia oxide and the strengthening effect of yttrium on oxide boundaries. 展开更多

On the basis of theoretical analyses and calculations of high speed continuous impact force and tool notch surface temperature acted upon by burr and serrated chip edge, a notch wear model of low stress value and temperature impact fatigue was established. Saw-tooth-shaped burr and fin-shaped chip edge continuously impacts the rake face and flank face at high speed and high fre-quency, which results in a V-shaped notch wear. An experiment was done to validate that the saw-tooth-shaped burr does affect the notch wear. This model can be utilized to solve reasonably many problems that cannot be explained by any other theoretical assumptions. 展开更多

The use of high-temperature materials is especially important in power station construction, heating systems engineering, furnace industry, chemical and petrochemical industry, waste incineration plants, coal gasifica... The use of high-temperature materials is especially important in power station construction, heating systems engineering, furnace industry, chemical and petrochemical industry, waste incineration plants, coal gasification plants and for flying gas turbines in civil and military aircrafts and helicopters. Particularly in recent years, the development of new processes and the drive to improve the economics of existing processes have increased the requirements significantly so that it is necessary to change from well-proven materials to new alloys. Hitherto, heat resistant ferritic steels sufficed in conventional power station constructions for temperatures up to 550℃ newly developed ferritic/martensitic steels provide sufficient strength up to about 600 - 620℃. In new processes, e.g. fluidized-bed combustion of coal, process temperatures up to 900℃ occur. However, this is not the upper limit, since in combustion engines, e.g. gas turbines. Material temperatures up to 1100℃ are reached locally. Similar development trends can also be identified in the petrochemical industry and in the heat treatment and furnace engineering. The advance to ever higher material temperatures now not only has the consequence of having to use materials with enhanced high-strength properties, considerable attention now also has to be given to their chemical stability in corrosive media. Therefore not only examples of the use of high-temperature alloys for practical applications will be given but also be contributed to some general rules for material selection with regard to their high-temperature strength and corrosion resistance. 展开更多

The recrystallization kinetics and microstructural evolution of a Ni3Al-based single crystal superalloy were presented, especially the different recrystallization behaviors between the dendrite arm and the interdendritic region. The single crystal alloy was deformed by grit blasting. A succeeding annealing under inert atmosphere at 1280 ℃ for different time led to the formation of recrystallized grains close to the grit blasting surface. It was found that the recrystallization depth and velocity in the dendrite arm were respectively deeper and faster than those in the interdendritic region where the Y-NiMo phase existed. The recrystallization process in the interdendritic region was significantly inhibited by the Y-NiMo precipitates. However, the pinning effect gradually weakened with the annealing time due to the dissolution of the Y-NiMo phase, and the recrystallization depth in the dendrite arm was deeper than that in the interdendritic region. 展开更多
