Practice and Exploration of Ideological and Political Education for Postgraduate Students Under the Mentor Responsibility System

This study aims to address the problems existing in the ideological and political education of postgraduate students,and combines the implementation of the mentor responsibility system to explore the role orientation,work content,and practical effects of mentors in the ideological and political education of postgraduate students.Through questionnaire surveys,interviews,and other research methods,the current situation of ideological and political education of postgraduate students under the mentor responsibility system is analyzed,and corresponding optimization strategies are proposed.

Application of Academic Salons in Cultivating the Scientific Research Skills of First-Year Nursing Master’s Students

Objective:To explore the application effect of academic salons on developing the scientific research skills of first-year nursing master’s students.Methods:According to Wallas’four-stage model of the creative process,from November 2022 to February 2023,66 first-year nursing master’s students from the School of Nursing at Zhejiang Chinese Medical University were selected using a convenient sampling method to participate in a multidisciplinary academic salon consisting of a total of 8 sessions held once every two weeks.Before the first and after the last academic salon,postgraduate research skills evaluation questionnaires and perception of research skills acquisition questionnaires were used to assess first-year nursing master’s students.A semi-structured interview was conducted with nine students after the final academic salon.Results:The total scores for scientific research skills and sense of achievement among first-year nursing master’s students after the academic salon were higher than those before the salon,and the difference was statistically significant.The interview results showed that the“salon theme,”“tutor comments,”and“sharer output”are the focus of the first-year nursing master’s students in the academic salon.Conclusions:Academic salons can enhance postgraduate students’scientific research skills and foster a greater appreciation for scientific research.We can enhance academic salons by carefully choosing relevant themes,inviting knowledgeable presenters and expert tutors to provide feedback,and prioritizing equality and effective communication.

English Learning Strategies Employed by EFL Postgraduate Students in Southwest China

English learning strategies play an important role in the language proficiency for EFL learners. Both frequency and patterns of English learning strategies use were found to be significantly related to language proficiency. The present investigation aimed to investigate a) an overall strategy use of postgraduate students in southwest China; and b) to examine the relationship as well as patterns of variations in frequency of students' reported strategy use with reference to their gender and field of study. The subjects of this study were 200 postgraduates in the universities of southwest China. A written questionnaire based on the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning(SILL) was adapted and biodata was added for background information. The findings of the research showed that the postgraduates, on the whole, reported medium frequency of use of English learning strategies. The results of the data analysis also demonstrated that frequency of postgraduates' reported use of English learning strategies varied significantly in terms of gender and field of study. The implications, limitations and recommendations for further research were also discussed.

An Analysis of Innovative Teaching of English Phonetics for Non-English Major Students

Phonetics is the cornerstone of language.The improvement of the proficiency of pronunciation has a great effect on the level of English listening and speaking skills.Learners with high proficiency in pronunciation can communicate effectively in terms of thoughts,culture,and emotions[1].However,due to the limitations of the language environment,subject characteristics,and traditional teaching methods,non-English majors often face problems such as difficulty in pronunciation and lack of motivation for learning,which raise concerns regarding the English phonetic learning situation among these students.Therefore,innovative phonetic teaching is of great significance to non-English majors.This paper aims to provide some innovative and effective strategies for the innovative teaching of English phonetics for non-English majors to meet the learning needs of students,and to provide useful guidelines for future teaching reform and practice.According to the literature review and personal teaching experience,the article summarizes some innovative strategies that can improve the teaching of non-English majors’pronunciation,such as using real situations and technical assistance,encouraging cooperative learning,gamifying phonetic learning,and so on.By implementing these strategies,students can improve phonetic sensitivity and pronunciation accuracy,thereby enhancing their listening skills and oral fluency.

Challenges and Coping Strategies Adopted by Postgraduate Students of Agricultural Education in Thesis Writing in Nigerian Universities

The study investigated challenges encountered and coping strategies adopted by postgraduate students of agricultural education in writing thesis in Nigerian universities. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The study was conducted in Nigerian universities offering post-graduate programme in agricultural education. The population for the study was 118 made up of 14 postgraduate diploma, 66 masters and 38 doctoral students writing thesis in agricultural education. The entire population was involved in the study. An instrument tilted: Challenges and Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CCSQ) was used for data collection. Three experts validated the questionnaire. Cronbach alpha reliability method was used to determine the internal consistency of the questionnaire. A reliability coefficient of 0.85 was obtained. A total of 97 copies of the questionnaire were returned representing 93 percent return rate. Data collected for the study were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions while Analysis of Variance was used to test hypothesis of no significant difference at P ≤ 0.05 level of significance. The statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) was the tool employed to analyze the data collected. It was found out that 28 challenges were encountered by postgraduate students of agricultural education in thesis writing while 15 coping strategies were adopted by postgraduate students of agricultural education in thesis writing. The recommendations were that postgraduate students of agricultural education who have abandoned their thesis writing should adopt the identified coping strategies to complete their programme among others.

Influence of English Proficiency on Postgraduate Students＇ Use of Language Learning Strategies

This study investigated the use of language learning strategies by a group of postgraduate students in a Chinese university. The emphasis was on the influence of L2 （second language） proficiency on learners＇ strategy use, aiming to look at how proficiency affects the use of LLS （language learning strategies） among postgraduate students learning EFL （English as a foreign language）, and to reveal some distinctive features in postgraduate students＇ use of learning strategies. Findings from this study have suggested a number of implications for the classroom teaching. Teachers should recognize that some strategies might be more suited to some learners than to others due to individual differences. Learners needed further training in the use of all learning strategies

Reflections on Non-English Major Postgraduate English Teaching Reform

This paper presents some reflections on non-English major postgraduate English teaching reform. The author points out some understandings on the English proficiency of non-English major postgraduate students and curriculum changes in the reform. The author thinks that postgraduate English teaching reform is a systematic project, with a goal to meet the practical needs of postgraduate students and improve their ability to use English in their study and work. Hence, every effort of the reform should be made to satisfy the practical needs of the students and to make their English study contribute to their achievements in their own subject area.

On English Vocabulary Teaching of Non-English Major Students

Non-English major students often feel frustrated in learning English vocabulary by rote memorization. Meanwhile, as thebasis of understanding and expressing language, vocabulary is vital to the smooth development of college English teaching reformsand the comprehensive improvement of students' English level. Therefore, it's necessary for college English teachers to researchthe rules of vocabulary teaching and give indispensable guidance to students.

A Survey on the Use of Listening Strategies Among Non-English Major Postgraduates

Strategy use is correlated with the students＇ performance, so it is necessary to provide students with some strategy instruction. In order to make the strategy instruction more pertinent to the students＇ needs, this study has investigated the status quo of the listening strategy use among the non-English major postgraduates, and has discovered that the students＇ use of listening strategy was far from sufficient, especially in management strategies and social strategies.

The Impact of English Films and TV Series on Non-English College Students’Intercultural Competence

Based on the related theories of intercultural competence and extensive analysis of literature,this paper employed questionnaires and interviews to do a research with 200 non-English college students about the general situation of their intercultural competence and the impact on it caused by English films and TV series in Wuhan University of Technology.The findings of the study indicate that non-English college students have relatively good intercultural competence while the deficiency of intercultural knowledge and skill exists;the appreciation of English films and TV series is positively correlated with the four dimensions of non-English college students’intercultural competence,namely intercultural knowledge,attitude,skill and awareness.Based on these findings of the research,the author brings up some specific and constructive suggestions on improving non-English college students’intercultural competence with the help of English films and TV series for college English teachers and non-English college students.

Relationship between English Leaming Motivation and SCET-3 Scores of Non-English Major Students in CDSI

Motivation is considered an important factor for non-English major students in their language learning. In the study, questionnaires and interviews were used to explore the relationship between learning motivations of CDSI （Chengdu Sport Institute）＇s non-English major students and their test scores in SCET-3 （Sichuan English Test-level 3）. The results found that in general non-English major students＇ motivation is not high with no significant gender differences; their learning motivation shows some correlation with their vocabulary level; their external motivation has more impact on the non-English major students. Therefore, language learning motivation has a positive relation with students＇ English learning achievement. Considering the characteristics of the non-English major students, suggestions on English teaching methods are made to stimulate students＇ learning motivation and cultivate their learning strategies, so as to improve the quality of English teaching and students＇ English level.

The Effects of Integrating Language Learning Strategy into EFL Instruction for Non-English Major Students in Vocational Technical Colleges

Language learning strategies play an important role in language learning. Students in vocational technical colleges have been regarded as low English proficiency learners due to their weak foundation in learning English. To explore the solution, the present study employed a specific survey of language learning strategy use and tried to conduct a one-semester language learning strategy training, aiming to investigate the effects of integrating language learning strategy into EFL instruction for non-English major students in vocational technical colleges. We found after the instruction, the difference in the frequency of overall strategy use between the experimental group and the control group was significant indicating that the students could be trained with language learning strategies to enhance the frequency of their strategy use. After language learning strategy instruction, the experimental group didn＇t perform significantly better than the control group in terms of their English language proficiency. However, the results of this present study still supported this viewpoint that the strategy instruction had positive impacts to some extent if properly conducted, for it had positive effects on enhancing students＇ language learning strategy use.

Fossilization of Non-English Major Students' Spoken English

It's common that non-English major students meet fossilization in their English study. The author focused on the fossilization of non-English major students' spoken English and wrote this article in four parts. Firstly,give the recent research on fossilization; secondly,state the main problems in non-English major students' oral English presentation; thirdly,analyze the reasons of this phenomenon; lastly,give a conclusion.

The Evaluation of the Cultural Contents in the English Textbook for Non-English Major Students:A Case Study at Independent College in China

This study investigates the existing General English textbook focusing on the cultural contents to enhance the intercultural awareness cultivation of Non-English major students in China.The findings of this study can provide the valuable information of cultural contents adaptation in the textbook.It also can reveal teachers’expectation and their awareness of teaching General English together with integrating cultural contents.Apart from the textbook analysis,10 English teachers participated in the study.Data were collected using New Century College English Zooming In:An Integrated English Course,checklist,and in-depth interview.The findings from the checklist verified that the cultural contents of the existing textbook are insufficient.Moreover,the in-depth interview uncovered that though the cultural contents appear in the textbooks,however,they are somewhat minimal expressions that deficient to support the effective intercultural cultivating.Based on the results of the analysis and exploration,this study provides a guidance on the types of intercultural content to be adapted in this course.The findings of this study can be beneficial to the intercultural textbook adaptation for academic institutes and individuals interested in the field of English language teaching and learning.

Revisiting Krashen’s Hypothesis:Teaching EFL to Mixed-Level Non-English Major Student of Cenderawasih University

Teaching English as a compulsory subject in Cenderawasih University has always been a challenging one.The situation and condition faced by the lecturers who are from English education program are complex.They have to teach English in the first year,sometimes until second year for non-English major students from different programs.At the same time,they deal with big classes from all programs.Issues in the teaching and learning process in the classroom may include total number of students,students’background knowledge of learning English,learning conditions,and teaching and learning style.Since these issues have happened throughout the years,several elements from Krashen hypothesis can be considered to help to create a better language learning environment.This study focuses on those elements of comprehensible input,reduced anxiety level,and active participation.These elements can be urgently suggested to English teaching and learning process at university level,particularly to teach EFL(English as a foreign language)to mixed-level non-English major university students to produce an effective language learning environment.
