A Study of English Translation Strategies of Subtitles of the Domestic Animated Film Chang’an from the Perspective of Eco-translatology

This article conducts an analysis and exploration of the English subtitles translation of the domestic animated film Chang’an from the perspective of eco-translatology.Taking three-dimensional transformation as the entry point,it analyzes the adaptation and selection of subtitle translators in the translation process from the dimensions of language,culture,and communication in Chang’an,aiming to enrich the practical analysis of eco-translatology and provide valuable insights and references for the theoretical construction and practical application of eco-translatology.This article enriches the practical analysis of eco-translatology and also validates to a certain extent the applicability of“three-dimensional”transformation.

Analysis of the Subtitle Translation of The Shawshank Redemption from the Perspective of the Skopos Theory

Translation is an important communication skill between different languages.In modern society,audiovisual products are distributed to worldwide areas as a popular means of mass media.As the globalization of economy and culture is advancing in the new century,audiovisual subtitle translation plays an increasingly important part.Good subtitles can enhance the audience’s experience of appreciating foreign films and make cultural communication more effective.This thesis conducts a brief survey on the strategies for film subtitle translation using the case study of the famous film The Shawshank Redemption.In this paper,based on Skopos theory,the author made a comprehensive analysis of subtitling activities and pointed out that subtitling,as a specialized area of translation,is not only guided by translation studies but also under the constraints of film properties.The Skopos theory of film subtitle translation is to provide,within the constraints of time and space,a well-translated subtitle that can contribute to a good understanding of what is happening on the screen.In short,the end justifies the means.Therefore,during the process of subtitle translation,the subtitler should take all the factors into consideration to identify the translation purpose,and then adopt corresponding translation strategies.From this perspective,the author takes the Skopos theory as instruction and applies the reduction and addition method to analyze the film subtitle translation.In the age of globalization,foreign films are increasingly entering people’s lives.Watching foreign films is a popular and effective way to understand foreign cultures.However,in China,subtitle translation has not attracted as much academic attention as it deserves and few theories could be appropriately applied to subtitle translation.Therefore,the author hopes that subtitle translation could be paid more attention in terms of cross-cultural communication.

Characteristics and C-E Translation Methods of the Four-Character Frame in the Subtitles of the Documentary Daming Palace

This paper studies the four-character frame in the subtitle of the documentary Daming Palace, aiming to provide a reference for the translation of the documentary four-character case as well as better spread Chinese culture. By analyzing, researching and summarizing the subtitle of Daming Palace and reading a lot of literature, the author has found that in Daming Palace the four-character frame is characterized by the use of the absolute four-character frames and the recurrence of some four-character frames, and that C-E translation methods of the four-character frame are mainly literal translation, free translation, provincial translation and concise translation.

Analysis of Domestication and Foreignization in Chinese-English Subtitle Translation——A Case Study of Hi,Mom

In recent years,with the booming development of the film industry,film subtitles play an increasingly important role in modern society.As one of the key links in cross-cultural communication,the quality of film subtitle translation affects the box office and viewing experience.Hi,Mom,a Chinese comedy based on the theme of mother’s love,which topped China’s box office during the Chinese New Year in 2021 and ascended to the third place in the global box office,high-quality subtitle translation is indispensable to its success.This paper discusses the subtitle translation of the film Hi,Mom based on the domestication and foreignization perspectives,so as to provide a reference for the Chinese-English translation of Chinese film.

The English Subtitle Translation of Quanzhou’s World Heritage Application Documentary: A Frame Theory Perspective

Based on Fillmore’s frame theory, this paper examines the translator’s cognitive frame operation in the English subtitle translation of Quanzhou’s World Heritage application documentary. It analyzes and discusses how the translator maximizes translation effect between the source language and the target language, so as to enhance the readability of documentary subtitles and promote the spread of traditional Chinese culture. The findings are as follows: Firstly, in the translation process, the frame operations used by the translator include frame correspondence, intra-frame operations, frame replacement, frame perspective shift and frame transplantation. Secondly, cultural documentaries are full of culture-loaded words, for which the translator usually uses frame transplantation. Thirdly, due to the instantaneous nature of subtitles, intra-frame operations and frame replacement are applied in terms of cultural background of the target language audience. Besides, in order to enhance the audience’s reading experience, there may be some changes of narrative perspective in the English translation of cultural documentaries.

English Film Subtitle Translation from the Perspective of Domestication and Foreignization—A Case Study of Ice Age

Nowadays,cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries have become increasingly frequent,which boosts the development of film industry and highlights the importance of subtitle translation.However,in China,subtitling is a relatively new research field of translation.This study explores the guiding role of domestication and foreignization strategies in English film subtitle translation.On the basis of material from Ice Age,the paper carries on the analysis of film subtitle translation in terms of expressions with typical cultural features and idioms&proverbs under the effective guidance of domestication and foreignization translation strategies.It’s concluded that domestication and foreignization strategies can provide theoretical guidance for subtitling and appropriate combination of the two strategies can achieve better translation effects.

Movie,as a media,plays an important and irreplaceable role in culture dissemination.Therefore,a successful film subtitle translation deserves much of the credit.Based on Darwin’s adaptation and selection and combined with the adaptation theory,professor Hu proposed and developed Eco-translatology,which studies translation from the perspective of ecology.This theory defined translation as a translator's adaptation and selection activities in a translational eco-environment,which is the world present by the source text,the source language,and the target language,namely the integrity of language,communication,culture,society,readers,the author and so on.

Puns always play a vital role in sitcoms in order to create humor or ironies.Sometimes good translations of puns can decide whether target language audiences are able to obtain the equal understandings and reactions of the sitcoms as source language audiences get.Nevertheless,it is not easy for many translators to render faithfully and smoothly some English puns into Chinese.Therefore,this paper will analyze the subtitle translation of puns in the British sitcom Mind Your Language from the perspective of Speech Act Theory so as to find out some useful and helpful strategies for translation of puns in subtitling.

On The Subtitle of Twilight Saga from the Perspective of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory

More and more foreign movies and TV series has been translated into Chinese,but there is still no mature theory to guide the subtitle translation.The subtitle of Twilight Saga has been selected as examples to discuss how to apply Eugene A.Ni da's"Functional Equivalence Theory"into the movie translation to achieve expected effect.

Educational Videos Subtitles’Summarization Using Latent Dirichlet Allocation and Length Enhancement

Nowadays,people use online resources such as educational videos and courses.However,such videos and courses are mostly long and thus,summarizing them will be valuable.The video contents(visual,audio,and subtitles)could be analyzed to generate textual summaries,i.e.,notes.Videos’subtitles contain significant information.Therefore,summarizing subtitles is effective to concentrate on the necessary details.Most of the existing studies used Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency(TF-IDF)and Latent Semantic Analysis(LSA)models to create lectures’summaries.This study takes another approach and applies LatentDirichlet Allocation(LDA),which proved its effectiveness in document summarization.Specifically,the proposed LDA summarization model follows three phases.The first phase aims to prepare the subtitle file for modelling by performing some preprocessing steps,such as removing stop words.In the second phase,the LDA model is trained on subtitles to generate the keywords list used to extract important sentences.Whereas in the third phase,a summary is generated based on the keywords list.The generated summaries by LDA were lengthy;thus,a length enhancement method has been proposed.For the evaluation,the authors developed manual summaries of the existing“EDUVSUM”educational videos dataset.The authors compared the generated summaries with the manual-generated outlines using two methods,(i)Recall-Oriented Understudy for Gisting Evaluation(ROUGE)and(ii)human evaluation.The performance of LDA-based generated summaries outperforms the summaries generated by TF-IDF and LSA.Besides reducing the summaries’length,the proposed length enhancement method did improve the summaries’precision rates.Other domains,such as news videos,can apply the proposed method for video summarization.

On the Translation Methods of the Subtitle in English Movies

English movie translation is a new field, especially subtitle translation. In recent years, with a large number of introducing foreign language movie, people on the audio and visual arts understanding and demand is going on with each passing day change, people's level to the foreign movie appreciation increase quickly. This requires the accuracy and rationality in subtitle translation. Subtitle translation is a kind of special language conversion type, in theory contains three basic elements: interlanguages information transfer, discourse of simplified or concentrate, and speaking into the written language. This thesis through to the English subtitles translate the study of the method of subtitle translation principles to be followed and the present subtitle translation problems are discussed in order to improve the quality of English movie subtitling translation.

Relevance Theory in Translation of Film Subtitle

As a special type of language transfer,subtitle serves as the bridge linking the original language and the target language for audience and supplies explicit and implicit information to the audience by audio and visual ways.By using Sperber and Wilson’s Relevance Theory to support and analyze the film subtitles’translation,we can find that the subtitles should create optimal relevance in translations to guarantee target audience that they could not only acquire basic information,but also obtain contextual effects adequately.Therefore,by applying relevance theory,this paper discusses the pursuit of optimal relevance in subtitle translation.

Analysis of Hero's English Subtitles——From a Cultural Perspective

Translating film subtitles has been generally accepted as a burgeoning industry and is being ever closely concerned by the translators. This essay aims to analyse how the cultural differences are addressed in Hero's English subtitles. Making a carefully study of Hero's English subtitles, It is found that the translator mainly adopted domestication to address culture specific issues in order to meet the taste of the target audience. Techniques such as omission, paraphrasing, transposition are used to maintain fluency and transparency in the subtitles.

On Subtitle Translation of Sitcoms——A Case Study of The Big Bang Theory

As we all know that exquisite subtitle translation of foreign film and television series is the fatal elements for them to spread among Chinese audiences. This article is based on Eugene·Nida's"the Functional Equivalence"principle with three char acteristics of sitcoms'subtitle to study the type, form and features of the Big Bang Theory, which lead to the conclusion of sitcom subtitle's characteristics. It helps us to analyze its subtitle from six aspects. As the result, the author of the paper makes the conclusion of translation tactic about Big Bang Theory, which could help the subtitle translation of similar sitcoms.

A Research on the Documentary Subtitle Translation from the Perspective of Reception Aesthetics Theory——A Case Study of the Subtitle Translation of The Story of China

Documentary is an important form of audiovisual works with the characteristics of both authenticity and artistry, which plays a significant role in the spread of culture and knowledge. Reception aesthetics is a theory of literary criticism raised by the German literature theoretician and aesthetician Hans Robert Jauss in the 1960 s, in which the focus of literary studies is shifted from the author and text to the reader. It emphasizes reader's participation and acceptance during the text understanding, by shifting the central position of studies from the author and work to the reader. It claims that only the works that have been comprehended and delivered by readers possess artistic value and meaning. With the characteristic of audience-centered, documentary happens to coincide with reception aesthetics theory which takes readers' horizon of expectation into consideration. Applying the theory of reception aesthetics as its interpretive framework, this paper makes an effort to study subtitle translation of documentary films.
