This letter reports experimental observation of a direct correlation between the acoustic nonlinearity parameter (NP) measured with nonlinear Rayleigh waves and the accumulation of plasticity damage in an AZ31 magnesium alloy plate specimen.Rayleigh waves are generated and detected with wedge transducers, and the NPs are measured at different stress levels. The results show that there is a significant increase in the NPs with monotonic tensile loads surpassing the material’s yielding stress. The research suggests an effective nondestructive evaluation method to track the surface damage in metals. 展开更多

An experimental study on performance of plain concrete under triaxial constant-amplitude and variable amplitude tension- compression cyclic loadings was carded out. The low level of the cyclic stress is 0. 2f and the upper level ranges between 0. 20f and 0. 55f., while the constant lateral pressure is 0. 3 f . The specimen failure mode, the three-stage evolution rule of the longitudinal strains and the damage evolution law under cyclic loading were analyzed. Furthermore, Miner's rule is proved not to be applicable to the cyclic loading conditions, hereby, a nonlinear cumulative damage model was established. Based on the model the remaining fatigue life was evaluated. The comparison whh the experiment resuhs shaws that the model is of better precision and applicability. 展开更多

This study aims at investigating the nonlinear dynamic behavior of rotating blade with transverse crack.A novel nonlinear rotating cracked blade model(NRCBM),which contains the spinning softening, centrifugal stiffening,Coriolis force, and crack closing effects,is developed based on continuous beam theory and strain energy release rate method. The rotating blade is considered as a cantilever beam fixed on the rigid hub with high rotating speed, and the crack is deemed to be open and close continuously in a trigonometric function way with the blade vibration. It is verified by the comparison with a finite element-based contact crack model and bilinear model that the proposed NRCBM can well capture the dynamic characteristics of the rotating blade with breathing crack. The dynamic behavior of rotating cracked blade is then investigated with NRCBM,and the nonlinear damage indicator(NDI)is introduced to characterize the nonlinearity caused by blade crack. The results show that NDI is a distinguishable indicator for the severity level estimation of the crack in rotating blade. It is found that severe crack(i.e.,a closer crack position to blade root as well as larger crack depth)is expected to heavily reduce the stiffness of rotating blade and apparently result in a lower resonant frequency.Meanwhile, the super-harmonic resonances are verified to be distinguishable indicators for diagnosing the crack existence, and the third-order super-harmonic resonances can serve as an indicator for the presence of severe crack since it only distinctly appears when the crack is severe. 展开更多

AISI H13 (4Cr5MoSiV1) is one of the commonly used materials for extrusion tool, and it suffers from fatigue-creep damage during the hot extrusion process. Stress-controlled fatigue and creep-fatigue interaction tests were carried out at 500℃ to investigate its damage evolution. The accumulated plastic strain was selected to define the damage variable due to its clear physical meaning. A new fatigue-creep interaction damage model was proposed on the basis of continuum damage mechanics. A new equivalent impulse density for fatigue-creep tests was proposed to incorporate the holding time effect by transforming creep impulse density into fatigue impulse density. The experimental results indicated that the damage model is able to describe the damage evolution under these working conditions. 展开更多

Previous constitutive models of granite shear creep have two limitations:(1) although moisture greatly affects granite shear creep behavior, currently there are no constitutive models that include this factor;(2) there are also no models that include an acceleration stage. This paper presents an improved Burgers constitutive model with the addition of a damage parameter to characterize the moisture effect and uses a nonlinear relation equation between stress and strain for inclusion as the acceleration stage. The damage parameter is determined from granite creep experiment under four different moisture contents(0%, 0.22%, 0.49%, and 0.79%). The nonlinear relation equation is obtained by fitting a dataset of stain versus time under five different loading stages. To verify the presented model, a creep experiment was conducted on other granite samples and the results show that the model agrees well with the experimental observation data. 展开更多
