A vortex-induced vibration(VIV)experiment of rough risers with coupling interference effect under a side-by-side arrangement was carried out in a wave-current combined flume. The roughness of the riser was characterized by arranging different specifications of surface attachments on the surface of the riser.Rough risers with three different roughnesses were arranged side by side with smooth risers to explore the VIV response of the riser under the combined action of roughness and interference effect, and to reveal the coupling mechanism between roughness and interference effect. The experimental results show that, compared with that of a smooth riser, the VIV of a rough riser under the coupling interference effect has a wider"lock-in"region,and the displacement decreases more significantly at a high reduced velocity, which is more likely to excite higher-order modes and frequency responses. In addition, the displacement response and frequency response of the smooth riser are not significantly affected by wake interference from the rough riser, which is caused by the decrease of the wake region due to the delay of the boundary layer separation point of the rough riser. 展开更多

When investigating the vortex-induced vibration(VIV)of marine risers, extrapolating the dynamic response on the entire length based on limited sensor measurements is a crucial step in both laboratory experiments and fatigue monitoring of real risers. The problem is conventionally solved using the modal decomposition method, based on the principle that the response can be approximated by a weighted sum of limited vibration modes. However, the method is not valid when the problem is underdetermined,i.e.,the number of unknown mode weights is more than the number of known measurements. This study proposed a sparse modal decomposition method based on the compressed sensing theory and the Compressive Sampling Matching Pursuit(Co Sa MP)algorithm, exploiting the sparsity of VIV in the modal space. In the validation study based on high-order VIV experiment data, the proposed method successfully reconstructed the response using only seven acceleration measurements when the conventional methods failed.A primary advantage of the proposed method is that it offers a completely data-driven approach for the underdetermined VIV reconstruction problem, which is more favorable than existing model-dependent solutions for many practical applications such as riser structural health monitoring. 展开更多

Various nonlinear phenomena such as bifurcations and chaos in the responses of carbon nanotubes(CNTs)are recognized as being major contributors to the inaccuracy and instability of nanoscale mechanical systems. Therefore, the main purpose of this paper is to predict the nonlinear dynamic behavior of a CNT conveying viscousfluid and supported on a nonlinear elastic foundation. The proposed model is based on nonlocal Euler–Bernoulli beam theory. The Galerkin method and perturbation analysis are used to discretize the partial differential equation of motion and obtain the frequency-response equation, respectively.A detailed parametric study is reported into how the nonlocal parameter, foundation coefficients, fluid viscosity, and amplitude and frequency of the external force influence the nonlinear dynamics of the system.Subharmonic,quasi-periodic,and chaotic behaviors and hardening nonlinearity are revealed by means of the vibration time histories,frequency-response curves, bifurcation diagrams, phase portraits, power spectra, and Poincarémaps. Also, the results show that it is possible to eliminate irregular motion in the whole range of external force amplitude by selecting appropriate parameters. 展开更多

The snap-through behaviors and nonlinear vibrations are investigated for a bistable composite laminated cantilever shell subjected to transversal foundation excitation based on experimental and theoretical approaches. An improved experimental specimen is designed in order to satisfy the cantilever support boundary condition, which is composed of an asymmetric region and a symmetric region. The symmetric region of the experimental specimen is entirely clamped, which is rigidly connected to an electromagnetic shaker, while the asymmetric region remains free of constraint.Different motion paths are realized for the bistable cantilever shell by changing the input signal levels of the electromagnetic shaker, and the displacement responses of the shell are collected by the laser displacement sensors. The numerical simulation is conducted based on the established theoretical model of the bistable composite laminated cantilever shell, and an off-axis three-dimensional dynamic snap-through domain is obtained. The numerical solutions are in good agreement with the experimental results. The nonlinear stiffness characteristics, dynamic snap-through domain, and chaos and bifurcation behaviors of the shell are quantitatively analyzed.Due to the asymmetry of the boundary condition and the shell, the upper stable-state of the shell exhibits an obvious soft spring stiffness characteristic, and the lower stable-state shows a linear stiffness characteristic of the shell. 展开更多

With its complex nonlinear dynamic behavior, the tristable system has shown excellent performance in areas such as energy harvesting and vibration suppression, and has attracted a lot of attention. In this paper,an asymmetric tristable design is proposed to improve the vibration suppression efficiency of nonlinear energy sinks(NESs)for the first time. The proposed asymmetric tristable NES(ATNES)is composed of a pair of oblique springs and a vertical spring. Then, the three stable states, symmetric and asymmetric, can be achieved by the adjustment of the distance and stiffness asymmetry of the oblique springs. The governing equations of a linear oscillator(LO)coupled with the ATNES are derived. The approximate analytical solution to the coupled system is obtained by the harmonic balance method(HBM)and verified numerically. The vibration suppression efficiency of three types of ATNES is compared. The results show that the asymmetric design can improve the efficiency of vibration reduction through comparing the chaotic motion of the NES oscillator between asymmetric steady states. In addition, compared with the symmetrical tristable NES(TNES),the ATNES can effectively control smaller structural vibrations. In other words, the ATNES can effectively solve the threshold problem of TNES failure to weak excitation. Therefore, this paper reveals the vibration reduction mechanism of the ATNES,and provides a pathway to expand the effective excitation amplitude range of the NES. 展开更多

This work presents a novel approach to achieve nonlinear vibration response based on the Hamilton principle. We chose the 5-MW reference wind turbine which was established by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory(NREL),to research the effects of the nonlinear flap-wise vibration characteristics. The turbine wheel is simplified by treating the blade of a wind turbine as an Euler-Bernoulli beam, and the nonlinear flap-wise vibration characteristics of the wind turbine blades are discussed based on the simplification first. Then, the blade’s large-deflection flap-wise vibration governing equation is established by considering the nonlinear term involving the centrifugal force.Lastly,it is truncated by the Galerkin method and analyzed semi-analytically using the multi-scale analysis method, and numerical simulations are carried out to compare the simulation results of finite elements with the numerical simulation results using Campbell diagram analysis of blade vibration. The results indicated that the rotational speed of the impeller has a significant impact on blade vibration. When the wheel speed of 12.1 rpm and excitation amplitude of 1.23 the maximum displacement amplitude of the blade has increased from 0.72 to 3.16.From the amplitude-frequency curve,it can be seen that the multi-peak characteristic of blade amplitude frequency is under centrifugal nonlinearity.Closed phase trajectories in blade nonlinear vibration, exhibiting periodic motion characteristics, are found through phase diagrams and Poincare section diagrams. 展开更多

A study was conducted on the effect of time delay and structural parameters on the vibration reduction of a time delayed coupled negative stiffness dynamic absorber in nonlinear vibration reduction systems. Taking dynamic absorbers with different structural and control parameters as examples, the effects of third-order nonlinear coefficients, time-delay control parameters, and negative stiffness coefficients on reducing the replication of the main system were discussed. The nonlinear dynamic absorber has a very good vibration reduction effect at the resonance point of the main system and a nearby area, and when 1 increases to a certain level, the stable region of the system continues to increase. The amplitude curve of the main system of a nonlinear dynamic absorber will generate Hop bifurcation and saddle node bifurcation in the region far from the resonance point, resulting in almost periodic motion and jumping phenomena in the system. For nonlinear dynamic absorbers with determined structural parameters, time-delay feedback control can be adopted to control the amplitude of the main system. For different negative stiffness coefficients, there exists a minimum damping point for the amplitude of the main system under the determined system structural parameters and time-delay feedback control parameters. 展开更多

The mechanical behavior, dynamic evolution, and flow-field distribution of a two-degree-of-freedom riserless drill string were simulated numerically by using FLUENT fluid simulation software with the user-defined function embedded. The rotation angular velocities before and after the critical rotation angular velocity were used as independent variables, and the reduced velocity range was 3-14.Fluid-structure coupling was realized based on the dynamic overset grid and the SST k-ωturbulence model. Results reveal that the dynamic response of the riserless drill string was considerably affected by rotation and flow velocity, which are coupled with each other. The cross-flow average dimensionless displacement increased with the rotation angular velocity, and rotation considerably enhanced the in-line maximum average dimensionless displacement. However, the cross-flow amplitude caused by vortex-induced vibration was suppressed when the rotation angular velocity reached a certain value. The in-line and cross-flow frequencies were the same, thereby causing the trajectory to deviate from the standard'figure-eight'shape and become a closed circle shape. The vortex did not fall behind the cylinder at low reduced velocity with high-rotation angular velocity, and the structure of the near-wake vortex remained U-shaped.The wake of the cylinder was deflected along the cross-flow direction, thereby leading to vibration asymmetry and resulting in increased vibration instability and disordered vibration trajectories, especially at high-rotation angular velocities. 展开更多

Experiments were conducted on risers with different mass ratios to study the effect of mode conversion and spanwise correlation. The slenderness ratio of the riser model was set as 169, and the Reynolds numbers are 1600-14400. The dynamic responses of riser models versus reduced velocity were analyzed, and the spanwise displacement, frequency, and trajectory of the mode conversion from the lower to the higher mode were explored. The results revealed that the riser model with a higher mass ratio excites a higher number of modes. The conversion region of multi-mode competition exists and narrows with the increasing mass ratio. Mode conversion is continuous and manifests as the transmission of peaks and troughs in mode shape: the peaks and troughs of mode shape move up in the mode stable development region and move down in the mode conversion region. The single-mode dominating vibration exhibits a standing wave feature, and the traveling wave feature is significant in the mode conversion region. Furthermore, the frequency jump is always transmitted from the trough to the peak of the mode shape, and finally, all the axial positions vibrate at the same frequency. The trajectory in the mode conversion region deviates from the 8-shape and recovers the standard8-shape at the middle and late stages of the mode stable development region. 展开更多

In offshore engineering, the phenomenon of free span often occurs, and the pipeline may have multiple free spans adjacent to each other, forming a multi-span pipeline. The interaction of different spans makes the structural vibration characteristics more complex, which may change the fatigue characteristics of the pipeline and affect the safety of the structure. In this paper, model tests were designed to explore the vortex-induced vibration(VIV) characteristics of multi-span pipelines and investigate the multi-span interaction mechanism. The experimental study mainly focused on the dynamic response of double-span pipelines, and further extended to triple-span pipelines, hoping that the results can be applied to more complex environment. The effects of span-length ratio, buried depth and axial force on VIV of the pipeline were investigated and discussed. The dynamic response of the pipeline varied with the span length. There was obvious interaction between different spans of multi-span pipelines, and the pipe-sediment interaction obviously affected the vibration characteristics of pipeline. The differences of pipeline burial depth and axial force changed the structural stiffness. With the increase of buried depth, the response amplitude presented a downward trend. The spanwise evolutions were asymmetric caused by the pipe-sediment interaction and multi-span interaction. The results can help to identify multi-span pipelines in engineering, and realize the prevention and control of free spans. 展开更多

A partition model of interference efficiency was constructed to study the coupling interference effect under combined internal and external flow. The concept of“internal flow efficiency”,“velocity ratio”and“interference efficiency”were introduced to quantify the effect of internal flow and interference, and reveal the coupling mechanism among internal flow, external flow and interference effect. The results showed that the dynamic response of risers under variable angles was significantly different after considering the effect of internal flow. When the external flow velocity was smaller than 0.25 m/s,the vibration of risers was promoted by the internal flow. With the increase of external flow velocity, the effect of internal flow was weakened and the dynamic response of riser mainly depended on the external flow and interference effect.Under the effect of different internal flow, the interference efficiency had similar change trend. The interference effect amplified the complex secondary flow effect inside the riser, making the dynamic response of riser complex and random. In this paper, the overlap area and subdivision criterion of interference effect were constructed within the range of experimental velocity ratio, and the change curve of interference efficiency was obtained with an average meaning, which may have important practical meaning. 展开更多

The cross-flow(CF)vortex-induced vibration(VIV)of a deepwater steep wave riser(SWR)subjected to uniform or shear flow loads is investigated numerically. The model is based on a three-dimensional(3D)nonlinear elastic rod theory coupled with a wake oscillator model. In this numerical simulation, the nonlinear motion equations of the riser with large deformation features are established in a global coordinate system to avoid the transformation between global and local coordinate systems, and are discretized with the time-domain finite element method(FEM).A wakeoscillator model is employed to study the vortex shedding, and the lift force generated by the wake flow is described in a van der Pol equation.A Newmark-βiterative scheme is used to solve their coupling equation for the VIV response of the SWR.The developed model is validated against the existing experimental results for the VIV response of the top-tension riser(TTR).Then, the numerical simulations are executed to determine VIV characteristics of the SWR.The effects of both flow velocity and the spanwise length of the flow field on the drag coefficient in the inline(IL)direction and the lift coefficient in the CF direction are investigated systematically. The results indicate that compared with TTR,the low frequency and multi-modal vibration are the main components of the SWR due to the large deformation and flexible characteristics. For shear flow, the multi-frequency resonance dominates the VIV response of the SWR,especially at the hang-off segment. 展开更多

The pipe-soil interactions at shoulders can significantly affect the vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) of free-spanning pipes in the subsea. In this paper, the seabed soil reacting force on the pipe is directly calculated with a nonlinear hysteretic soil model. For the VIV in the middle span, a classic van der Pol wake oscillator is adopted. Based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, the vibration equations of the pipe are obtained which are different in the middle span and at the two end shoulders. The static configuration of the pipe is firstly calculated and then the VIV is simulated. The present model is validated with the comparisons of VIV experiment, pipe-soil interaction experiment and the simulation results of VIV of free-spanning pipes in which the seabed soil is modelled with spring-dashpots. With the present model, the influence of seabed soil on the VIV of a free-spanning pipe is analyzed. The parametric studies show that when the seabed soil has a larger suction area, the pipe vibrates with smaller bending stresses and is safer. While with the increase of the shear strength of the seabed soil, the bending stresses increase and the pipe faces more danger. 展开更多

An improved three-dimensional(3D)time-domain couple model is established in this paper to simulate the bidirectional vortex-induced vibration(VIV)of a deepwater steep wave riser(SWR)subjected to oblique currents. In this model, the nonlinear motion equations of the riser are established in the global coordinate system based on the slender rod theory with the finite element method.Van der Pol equations are used to describe the lift forces induced by the x-and y-direction current components, respectively. The coupled equations at each time step are solved by a Newmark-βiterative scheme for the SWR VIV.The present model is verified by comparison with the published experimental results for a top-tension riser. Then,a series of simulations are executed to determine the influences of the oblique angle/velocity of the current, different top-end positions and the length of the buoyancy segment on the VIV displacement, oscillating frequency as well as hydrodynamic coefficients of the SWR.The results demonstrate that there exists a coupled resonant VIV corresponding to x-direction and y-direction,respectively.However,the effective frequency is almost identical between the vibrations at the hang-off segment along x and y directions. The addition of the buoyancy modules in the middle of the SWR has a beneficial impact on the lift force of three segments and simultaneously limits the VIV response, especially at the decline segment and the hang-off segments.Additionally, the incident current direction significantly affects the motion trajectory of the SWR which mainly includes the fusiform and rectangle shapes. 展开更多

Due to technical limitations, existing vibration isolation and energy harvesting(VIEH)devices have poor performance at low frequency. This paper proposes a new multilink-spring mechanism(MLSM)that can be used to solve this problem. The VIEH performance of the MLSM under harmonic excitation and Gaussian white noise was analyzed. It was found that the MLSM has good vibration isolation performance for low-frequency isolation and the frequency band can be widened by adjusting parameters to achieve a higher energy harvesting power.By comparison with two special cases, the results show that the MLSM is basically the same as the other two oscillators in terms of vibration isolation but has better energy harvesting performance under multistable characteristics. The MLSM is expected to reduce the impact of vibration on high-precision sensitive equipment in some special sites such as subways and mines, and at the same time supply power to structural health monitoring devices. 展开更多

The nonreciprocity of energy transfer is constructed in a nonlinear asymmetric oscillator system that comprises two nonlinear oscillators with different parameters placed between two identical linear oscillators. The slow-flow equation of the system is derived by the complexification-averaging method. The semi-analytical solutions to this equation are obtained by the least squares method, which are compared with the numerical solutions obtained by the Runge-Kutta method. The distribution of the average energy in the system is studied under periodic and chaotic vibration states, and the energy transfer along two opposite directions is compared. The effect of the excitation amplitude on the nonreciprocity of the system producing the periodic responses is analyzed, where a three-stage energy transfer phenomenon is observed. In the first stage, the energy transfer along the two opposite directions is approximately equal, whereas in the second stage, the asymmetric energy transfer is observed. The energy transfer is also asymmetric in the third stage, but the direction is reversed compared with the second stage. Moreover, the excitation amplitude for exciting the bifurcation also shows an asymmetric characteristic.Chaotic vibrations are generated around the resonant frequency, irrespective of which linear oscillator is excited. The excitation threshold of these chaotic vibrations is dependent on the linear oscillator that is being excited. In addition, the difference between the energy transfer in the two opposite directions is used to further analyze the nonreciprocity in the system. The results show that the nonreciprocity significantly depends on the excitation frequency and the excitation amplitude. 展开更多

In this paper, the nonlinear free vibration behaviors of the piezoelectric semiconductor(PS) doubly-curved shell resting on the Pasternak foundation are studied within the framework of the nonlinear drift-diffusion(NLDD) model and the first-order shear deformation theory. The nonlinear constitutive relations are presented, and the strain energy, kinetic energy, and virtual work of the PS doubly-curved shell are derived.Based on Hamilton's principle as well as the condition of charge continuity, the nonlinear governing equations are achieved, and then these equations are solved by means of an efficient iteration method. Several numerical examples are given to show the effect of the nonlinear drift current, elastic foundation parameters as well as geometric parameters on the nonlinear vibration frequency, and the damping characteristic of the PS doublycurved shell. The main innovations of the manuscript are that the difference between the linearized drift-diffusion(LDD) model and the NLDD model is revealed, and an effective method is proposed to select a proper initial electron concentration for the LDD model. 展开更多

The influence of weights is usually ignored in the study of nonlinear vibrations of plates. In this paper, the effect of structure weights on the nonlinear vibration of a composite circular plate with a rigid body is presented. The nonlinear governing equations are derived from the generalized Hamilton's principle and the von Kármán plate theory. The equilibrium configurations due to weights are determined and validated by the finite element method(FEM).A nonlinear model for the vibration around the equilibrium configuration is established. Moreover, the natural frequencies and amplitude-frequency responses of harmonically forced vibrations are calculated. The study shows that the structure weights introduce additional linear and quadratic nonlinear terms into the dynamical model. This leads to interesting phenomena. For example, considering weights increases the natural frequency.Furthermore, when the influence of weights is considered, the vibration response of the plate becomes asymmetrical. 展开更多
